HI BOB. LIKE YOUR LISTS.
HAVE A COMMENT ON THE CARS FOR SALE LIST. I KNOW YOU GIVE A SITE FOR AREA
CODES AND IT HELPS BUT IS CUMBERSOME. WAS WONDERING IF YOU COULD REQUEST
THAT ALL CAR ADS CONTAIN THE STATE THE CAR IS LOCATED IN. SEEMS LIKE A
SMALL THING TO PUT IN AN AD, I KNOW I WOULD IF I PLACED AN AD. IT'S KINDA
LIKE WHEN A PERSON PUTS A CAR FOR SALE IN A SWAP MEET AND THEN DOESN'T
STATE THE PRICE. THAT GETS ME SO RILED UP. IT'S LIKE THE GUY DOESN'T WANT
PEOPLE TO KNOW HOW MUCH HE WANTS. VERY FRUSTRATING!!! AND TO BOOT HE ISN'T
THERE TO ASK!!! WHAT DO THESE PEOPLE THINK? ANYWAY BOB, JUST MY THOUGHT.
APPRECIATE YOUR WORK.
REGARDS,
PETE LEMMON
SAN JOSE, CA (SEE?)....THE CITY WOULD BE ICING ON THE CAKE

Editor's note. Please read the intro to every list just above your e-mail.

It has been my experience that when someone does not put a price in an ad
the car is ALWAYS
over prices. List members what to you think?

Bob,

Am I the only one who saw this or did I miss something?

This is to Mr. Willis:
In response to this comment:

"From: "Robert Willis", INTERNET:willisb@kos.net

I think I will stay with the Vette , resale is better and it is a real car
."

I don't think kind of comment is necessary, We have owned many old "steel"
Chevys, a 55 Belair coupe, a 61 Impala Bubble-top, 52 Chevy Pick-up and so
on, believe me they are real cars not plastic toys.

In your list of 8/23 you include an editorial note questioning if the "Iron
Duke" was indeed "...the motor GM had a lot of trouble getting to run
smooth..."
I don't work in powertrain - and am not as familiar with the more modern
stuff
as I am with the earlier! However, I had an '87 GMC S-Series pickup with
the 151
cubic inch four - and I know it had no balance shaft. Yes, it was a bit
rough as
one would expect with a large-displacement inline four. It is possible that
this
engine got a balance shaft in later years, but I don't think so.

I believe that the 4-cyl. GM engine which you are thinking about is
actually the
Olds Quad Four. This one is a dual overhead cam design - which did not have
a
balance shaft when introduced - but did get one in later years. Initial
production versions of this engine were also known for blowing head gaskets
-
and use of the "Quad Four" name was phased out for the later improved
versions.

Editor's note. Roy, you are correct. It was the Quad Four I was thinking
about.

To Jim wheeler I have enough trouble with octane with out putting
diesel fuel in the crap gas we have these days . Usually a by pass like
used in 50`s and 60`s GM cars with air conditioning solved the problem
!! Can be easily added by using a by pass filter like used in 65 GTO`s
and others. Thanks Bob for such a GREAT service Sincerely Ernie

Bob: Thanks for the great services that you render. Having just passed my
56th birthday and needing to think about the future, I am now printing your

latest newsletter. This information I also need. Thanks.

Of note, Richard Chappell is a close friend of ours here in Delaware.
He, Pat, my now ex-wife and I started the Mid-Atlantic
Nomad Association in 1971. The club is still in existence though not as
active as it once was when there was nothing else going on. Too many
cruises/shows to choose from.

Trivia: Only 2 individuals have had 2 cars named after them.

Take care. I hope that the energy continues. Jay

Editor's note. Jay, please tell Richard and/or Pat Chappell if they ever
get e-mail to please let
me know their e-mail address so I can invite them to join the list. I know
they could be a big
help to all of us.

Hi Bob,
This is for all you Tri-5ers who were wondering about the '55 used in
American Graffiti. This is kinda long but I'll try to edit it for length
without losing the gist of the story. If you want to know any of the
details which may have been omitted, e-mail me and I'll try to answer
any questions.
First of all, there were three '55 Chevys built for the movie "Two
Lane Blacktop". They were built by Richard Ruth of Competition
Engineering in Sunland, CA. Two were built for filming and one was the
'stunt' car which had a full NASCAR roll cage built in it for a
'roll-over' scene that was never filmed.
One of the cars was the camera car, for interior shots and the other
was used for exterior shots. The camera car was equipped with a crate
L-88 and the other with a crate 454 C-1.
After filming, the cars were rather beat up and the camera car was
parted out to refurbish the drive car for American Graffiti. An
unconfirmed story says that the camera car was bought by a studio
employee who sold the L-88 for use in a boat and then rebuilt the car.
The stunt car from AG that was used in the crash scene was towed away
and a salvage yard '55 was used for the burn scene.
The car was then sold to Sam Crawford, who owned it when it was
featured in a 1976 issue of Street Rodder magazine, along with other AG
cars
Steve Fitch of Witchita, KA bought the car from Crawford. He also
bought the Yellow '32 Ford coupe and they were profiled in October 1983
Car Craft magazine. He did a detailed restoration of the '55 and is
credited with saving the '32 in as-is condition from the movie. When he
put the cars up for sale the coupe went to San Francisco and the '55
Chevy ended up here in MD with the current owner, Wayne Newsome.
Shortly after the car was bought by Newsome it was given a frame-off
modification as a show car and it's appearance was changed from when it
appeared in AG. There are still several details that show it to be the
original AG car.
1-The radiused wheel wells.
2-In Two Lane Blacktop the trunk was a fiberglass lift-off held in place
with hood pins. The trunk is now hinged and the holes filled but they
are still visible under close scrutiny.
3-In TLB and AG you can clearly see the tube front axle and the chrome
radius rods, and the coil-over suspension.
4-In the Car Craft article the car is pictured with the "GRAF 55" Kansas
license tag. That tag is still on the car.
5-In TLB there is a scene in which a gas station attendant is seen
filling the tank with the trunk removed. The filler was accessed through
a hole cut in the floor. The hole is still there, although covered by a
patch and fastened from the bottom.
Richard Ruth, who built the car, has examined the car and says it's
one of the two originals that he built for Two Lane Blacktop and went on
to fame in American Graffiti.
The car was recently shown at the MD Camaro Club's All-Chevy show at
Win-Kelly Chevrolet in Clarksville, MD.
Well folks, that's it! Hope you liked hearing about the '55. Any
questions? I can be reached by e-mail at kautz@home.com Thanks again,
Bob, for this terrific forum! Wild Bill

Bob, It's a great site for 55-57 cars but there are very few trucks. As
the
new (8-24-00) owner of a 1955 Cameo Pickup I would love to see more
postings
by those interested in Tri-5 trucks. Aren't they just as interesting as
the
cars?

Will you show your Chevrolet in the VCCA All Chevy Show at Guranty
Chevrolet
in Santa Ana, CA, October 7, 2000? Any pre 1974 Chevrolet product is
welcome. Call 949-551-4821 for a flyer.

Thanks,

Editor's note. I agree that trucks are just as interesting as cars and I
encourage posts about them.
Your show at Guaranty Chevy in Santa is also a great show that I recommend
it to everyone. I have been going to it for many years. If you check out
the price of a new Chevy, the prices of old ones do not seem so out of
line.

Here is an interesting story I read in a retirement planning book recently.

Truth is indeed stranger than fiction. One of the most bizarre cases
involved a man
named JOHN DOE (not his real name), a car dealer in a medium sized town.
John died about 5 years ago and his will is still in probate. John was a
prominent member of the community. He was an elder in his church and even
had a wing of the church named for him. He had a private audience with
the Pope and his picture taken with President Regan.

John had a well know dislike for lawyers. Probably from being sued in his
business several
times. His estate was worth 20 million on his death. With that kind of
money he could get the
best legal help available to draft his will. It appears that he did not
get good advice on his will.

His will said something like this. "I leave each of my children 3 million
dollars and the rest of
my estate to my wife." John had 4 children. 2 sons and 2 daughters.
After his death, John's will
was filed with the probate court. Then it became a public document. A
few months later, just
before probate was complete, the will was contested by Bill Jones (not his
real name). Bill
claimed he was John's son from an affair John had 30 years ago. Bill
wanted his 3 million dollars
as provided in John's will.

As you would imagine, John family was outraged as John had been married to
his present and
only wife for 40 years. After much legal proceedings, Bill got the probate
judge to order John
exhumed and DNA tests run on John and Bill to determine if John was Bill's
father. DNA tests
were run and to every one's surprise Bill was indeed John's son. To make
matters worse in the
families view, Bill was a homosexual, had AIDS, and had been in prison
on drug charges. Since
John's will left 3 million to each of his children and Bill was John's son
the family after much legal
costs agreed to give him 3 million dollars from John's estate.

Of course this 3 million came from John's wife share of the estate as she
was to get the rest of
the estate after the children got their 3 million. She was not happy to
say the least. Again just
before the revised will was to complete probate, there were 2 more
contests of the will by 2
women who claimed to be John's daughters. They hired the same lawyer as
Bill Jones to help
them prove they each deserved 3 million. Just as before, over the family's
objections, John's
body was exhumed again for DNA samples. And again just as before, they
were indeed John's
daughters.

That is where the case stands now. If you do the math, 7 people can not
share 3 million dollars
from a 20 million dollars estate. And what will the wife get from the
estate? Not to mention
who will pay very large legal fees.

There are many lessons to be learned from this case. If John had records
of all of his children
and included them in his will and gave the 3 children not by his wife $1
each, much pain and
suffering could have been avoided. He could have put his property in a
trust and none of this
could become public. It may have embarrassed John's family to find out
after his death but that is
nothing compared to the problems it caused by having John exhumed 2 times
for DNA tests and having
everything reported in the local newspaper.
