BOB

I owe you in a big way and I mean a really big way. You encouraged people
to plan their estate and you mentioned that in community property states
such as California that you get a stepped up basis when a spouse dies. I
have lived in California all of my life and I knew that California was a
community property state but I had no idea what stepped up basis meant. It
happened that I had an appointment with my tax man for my business the next
day so I asked him what stepped up basis meant.

When he explained it to me, it was like a bolt of lighting hit me. Here is
why. My parents bought 4 acres on the beach in a rural area of San Diego
County in 1940. They paid $50,000 for these 4 acres. The real estate
people who handled the transaction had asked my dad how they wanted to hold
title to the property. Dad said "I don't know". "What is best"? They told
him Joint Tenancy. Dad and Mom still own the property today and it was
still in Joint Tenancy. However, the property is in what is now the city
of La Jolla, California. For people familiar with Southern California,
you know what the value of 4 beach front acres in La Jolla is worth now.
Lets just say it has had good appreciation in 60 years.

I had Dad and Mom have their lawyer change the ownership to community
property. What a tax break people that live in community property state
get when a house is sold. It will save us a ton of money on taxes. It is
hard to believe that people in non community property states don't adopt
it. Being on your list is the best bargain I ever had.

Some years back I switched from ball to roller front bearings. This made
my 56 210 ride quieter and smoother. I used the hub and roller bearings
from a 1967 full size chevrolet and kept the original 56 drums. It is
explained in the CCI big red book. The hardest part I had was removing the
drums from the original hubs...30 plus years is a long time to be rusted
together. Good luck

Hi Bob,

To Mike, who asked about direct replacement roller bearings for his '55:

Call Allied Bearing Sales in Los Angeles. Their number is (800)421-3658 or
(310) 837-0752

I've had their bearings in my '57 for several years now. No problems! The
manufacturer is M.B.S. (Japan). I think the sizes are the same for all
three years. At last check, the inner (B40R) was $38 and the outer (B01R)
was $23 and change.

Beats buying a whole new hub! Good luck.

Hi Bob,
Here I am again!
The '57 fuelies ran as smooth as the rest of the '57s when they were
tuned correctly. The problem was in keeping them tuned right. A neighbor
had a '57 210 283 fuelie that ran like a rocket when it was right. The
problem he had was keeping it tuned. I seem to remember that he had to
clean the plugs a lot because it ran rich. I rode in the car with him
many times and never remember any rough idling or anything else that
belied the fuel injection. (It was FAST!) The main reason for the fuel
injection was to increase the horsepower. Chevrolet claimed 283 hp from
283 cid and said it was an American first. They ignored the fact that
the famous Chrysler hemi in 1956, one year earlier, produced 331 hp with
a normally aspirated engine with 331 cid. In fact, slightly tweaked
hemis were producing more than 350 hp in '56. Wild Bill

Mr. Ford , I have a 57 fuel injection GM film..
As I recall it was not so much for power as it was to be very fuel
efficient..All so that it was installed mostly on 4 drs.
Only around 2 or so but they did run smoothly but at a higher RPM,with
a wine like noise.
My projector died or I could check it out more for you.
It was later on in 57 that GM did a race unit,,may have had a R at the
end of the number..been awhile since I have seen the movie.
some one told me if it messed up,it would not just stop it would burn
the tops out of the pistons.there for I sold the unit I had.
I do have some small gaskets and drive cable.

Bob,
I would like to reply to Internet Mikes question about changing front
bearings to tapered roller bearings. This is a simple swap. Search the
local salvage yards and locate a pair of front hubs from a 64 Full size
Chevrolet car, install new bearings and seals for the 64 in the hub and
install them directly on the 55,56,57 spindles. Next separate the original
front drums from the hubs and install them on the 64 hubs and you are ready
to go. I have personably made this swap 10-12 times on my own cars as well
as my customers cars.
Hope this helps

Blue Flame Six paint - I used Bill Hirsch Enamel - Chevy Blue - 53 - 62.
You
can purchase a quart ($25)or a 14 oz spray can ($10). He advertises in
Hemmings.
1-800-828-2061. Works good.

Underside Red Oxide - Have used Dupont Corlar Epoxy and now using PPG Epoxy
primer - Red. The PPG was recommended in Harold Lousiana's 55 restoration
book
and the Corlar is recommended in the earlier "How to restore Your 57 Chevy"
book (also by Louisiana). I tried to buy the Corlar locally in Florida last
year and was told its now considered to be a legacy outdated paint so I
went
with the PPG Red. The PPG is redder looking than the Corlar. Corlar is
more
brownish than the PPG. Both worked good.

Hello Bob and Everyone Else,

I need a lesson on rear ends, not hers, the one for my 57. I would like to
hear comments on 10 and 12 bolts and a 9". Which is best? What years are
the best fits to a 57 sedan. Since the 9" is a Ford I assume that the bolt
pattern would be different from the front if so I don't want one. Help
Anyone?

I have a '56 150 6 JCL. I know the engine was changed in 1969 and the
replacement has the number RSK942 on it. I understand the B is Flint and
the B means it was built for a Powerglide, but what about the other
numbers?
Is it a '56 casting? What was specific about the Powerglide designation?
Was
it the bell housing / torque converter attachment? I'd appreciate any help

Anybody out there got a spare fuel line from the pump
to cab for a 235 incline 6 WITH an incline "glass bowl"
type filter?

There are two types, one that strains the gas thrum ( I
think ) a white porous stone, and a kind that filters the
gas thrum a paper element.
I'd prefer the paper element type, but I'm flexible.
Ping me off-list if you've got one.
