located in the cab. You can smell it strongly but you cannot see it. Is
there a way to find it?

I have a question concerning the fender birds of a 56 Chevy. I just picked

up a nice pair of used ones at a flee market today for use on my 210 wagon.

Question is: where is the exact correct position on the fender to mount
them?
I don't have mounting instructions, but how far back from the forward-most

point of the fender is the first mounting hole? Any help would be greatly
appreciated!

Bob-
I recently bought a '57 4dr hardtop. I'm currently in the process of
converting the front to disc brakes, I'm not done yet, but a fairly "easy"
conversion. My father-in-law and I are working on the car together
(well....he's teaching me as I watch) and are having a great time. A
friend of his made this conversion on a '57 years ago. He kept the pattern
for the mountings (which we welded up a "new" set) for the calipers and we
have used new '70 Nova caliper and rotors. I will let ya know when we are
done if it truly was "easy".
I do have a question about the car. On there is what looks like a "coolant
hose" fitting more towards the middle of the firewall. Someone has routed
right back to itself. I thought this was for a heater that had gone bad.
My father-in-law pointed out that the hoses for the heater are to the left
(looking under the hood) and he didn't know what the other hose had been
used for. Any ideas?

Thanks for your time-

Has anyone out there attempted to retrofit the 55-57 chevy with self

The following is the description of an engine for sale on eBay with a
title of "283 cid engine complete":
<<<<< Complete 283cid engine. Rebuilt with less than 2000 miles. Has
original generator (6 volt), oil filter in canister that sets on top of
the engine, has 1 barrel carburetor, headers, totally stock, complete
ready to drop in. Engine has been covered and garaged for 2 years and
ran great. Was taken out of a 1955 Chevrolet p/u. Block casting number
is 3703524 and shows to be a 265 manufactured in1955. >>>>>

How many things can you find wrong with this description? Can you
really tell what he is selling?

To any of you that have been able to install a rear disc brake kit on a 12
bolt in a 55-57 Chevy using a factory GM brake parts I would appreciate
hearing from you. The aftermarket kits seem to be a little high in price. I
have already purchase a front kit so I just need the items on the rear
axle.

To any of you that have been able to install a LT1 in a 55-57 Chevy using a
factory GM air conditioner compressor I would appreciate hearing from you.
I have been told there some special problems when using the gm compressor
due to its displacement is 10 cu in rather than the 8.5 of the Sanden units
which vintage air and air-tique systems are designed for.

<< I need a lesson on rear ends, not hers, the one for my 57. I would like
to
hear comments on 10 and 12 bolts and a 9". Which is best? What years are
the best fits to a 57 sedan. Since the 9" is a Ford I assume that the bolt
pattern would be different from the front if so I don't want one. Help
Anyone?

Charlie Hew

The 12 bolt is stronger than the 10 bolt, I would go 12 bolt and install a
c
clip eliminator. The strongest of the 3 is the Ford 9 inch. That is what I
have. Several companies (Currie, Moser, etc) sell a 9 inch allready set up
to
bolt into a tri-five.
It all depends on what you are planning to do w/ the car and what type of
horsepower it will see.

Pretaining to the problem of gas overflowing from filler tube: I
learned when I was riding motorcycles how to control the gas pump nozzle so
that I can see the gas going into the tank and be able to start/stop the
fuel going in as needed. The rubber boot on the pump nozzle can be pulled
up allowing you to see down the filler tube while fueling. This also seems
to shut off the automatic shut off of the pump so that you can start/stop
the fuel going into the filler pipe at will. This is a two handed project,
so I suggest the first time you try it do it with a not too full gas tank.
This method is also used to fill gas cans and I have been using it for
years. It allows me to get the maximum amount of fuel into my '55 Chevy's
tank, all the way up the filler tube without spilling a drop and with the
gas prices going WAY UP we can't afford to loose a drop.

Bob,

A friend of mine just sent me an electric temperature gauge for what I
believe was a 1956 Chevy. The gauge appearance is identical to the ether
tube variety that came on my 1955. Since it was free I think I will try to

use it.

My local parts supplier has a temperature sending unit for what books as a
1957 electric gauge -- I assume it will work in my head opening.

On the back of this gauge there are two terminals marked "SENDER" and
"IGN".
I assume you hook a wire up to the right terminal (marked IGN) to a hot
lead
in the ignition switch and the other wire to the top terminal on the
sending
unit. Question: which terminal on the ignition switch do I attach this
thing to?

I was wondering if someone along the list could explain to me how this
gauge
works and if there is a way to test the thing before I install it to see if

it works.

They can send me a personal email at oldcars55@aol.com

Thanks to all for your wonderful info.

Bob - I am the list member who read Phillip Browns note several days ago
about the original 55 shop manual being on eBay. I entered a bid of
$6.00 and was the only bidder - and bought it!
Phillip has noted on the 9/6 list that buying an original for $16.00 is
not at all bad, and he is right. It arrived and it is a very nice unit
in excellent condition for its 45 years. It does have the fluid lines
in red, rounded corners and the price tag of $1.50 (oh, the good old
days....) in the lower corner all of which indicate an original manual.
There are also a few errors which were corrected in the service news
sent monthly to the dealers, and these corrections were included in the
reprints (ignition key switch removal, for example).
Yeah, the seller made some money on the $10.00 shipping & handling - the
postage bill (priority mail!) was $5.40. When you deal with auction
companies online, find out BEFORE YOU BID what the sellers are going to
charge for S&H, and use that figure as part of the overall price you are
willing to pay for the item. I put a figure of $30.00 for an original
manual as being fair for me to pay, and bid less the $10.00 shipping &
handling. EBay is set up to automatically counter a higher bid if your
reserve figure is there, so I bid $20.00 and no one else bid! I got it
for the six buck opening bid, and about 1/2 of what I was willing to
pay.
Thanks again to Phillip Brown for his tip and his information on
insuring it is indeed an original manual. That is exactly why your list
is so great - people help out others with their knowledge.
