Hi Bob,
I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoy your list and the many
things
I've learned although I've been involved with 5-6-7 Chevy's for over 25
years.
I recently had a computer problem and lost all the list copies I
had saved
over the last year and a half. Could you please repost the information
from
the gentleman on the roller bearing numbers which will replace the front
ball bearings in a 57. He didn't say in the original post but I assume the
p/n he gave would include the bearing races as well? As I remember he said
they were of foreign manufacture.
I am moving from Buffalo, New York to the Tampa Bay area in Florida
this
coming week. I'd love to hear from anyone on the list who lives in the
area
about cruise nights, swap meets, area clubs, etc. so I can begin to attend
when I get there. List members may contact me at: wcarrig@att.net
Thanks Bob for all your hard work to make this list happen. We all
owe you
our sincere thanks.

Bob,
I would like to reply to Internet Mikes question about changing front
bearings to tapered roller bearings. This is a simple swap. Search the
local salvage yards and locate a pair of front hubs from a 64 Full size
Chevrolet car, install new bearings and seals for the 64 in the hub and
install them directly on the 55,56,57 spindles. Next separate the original
front drums from the hubs and install them on the 64 hubs and you are ready
to go. I have personably made this swap 10-12 times on my own cars as well
as my customers cars.
Hope this helps

Have just completed resto, of 57 chev. Could use some tech help on a
lighting
problem. I'm just a weekend wrench and not all that good on auto. electric.

The problem is, my cluster lights do not go on (gauges, directionals work)
The clock also doesn't work-glovebox lite does. Checked the fuse panel and
no
power to grey wire (where 3 amp. fuse is) Question: could I have a
defective
light switch? (headlites, park lites and tail=ites are working)

I am doing a 57 Bel Air 2 dr. Ht. and I'm wondering if it is better to use
a 350 automatic, or the original power glide. I want to keep the value of
the car as good as possible, but the 350 would make it more comfortable.
Someone has added a 4 speed, which is coming out. It came with a power
glide. Also, I would like to install a custom AC. Would that hurt, or
help the value.
Thanks, jb

Bob, you can include this in the list if you want. It's just a little long

and tends toward the technicalities of chemistry. I think most of this is
pretty close to correct. However, freshman chemistry was 15 years ago.

In response to your question as to whether water has holes in it. As an
easy
explanation, yes. In actuality, when you dissolve a salt in water, the
salt
ionizes. That is, it separates into a positive ion (called a 'cation') and
a
negative ion ('anion'). Water is a polar solvent. That means it has one
end
that is positively charged and one that is negatively charged. (The charge

comes from an unshared pair of electrons that create a negative field on
one
end of the molecule). As a magnet will show you, similar electrical
charges
repel each other. That would create a space between the molecules that
would
leave room for the ions from the salt to slip in next to the opposite
electrical charge. That is, the cations would gather near the negatively
charged end of the water molecule and the anions would gather near the
positive end.

On the molecular scale sodium and chlorine are pretty small. Therefore,
there is not a lot of volume change when the salt goes into solution. A
larger molecule could create some displacement and increase the volume of
the
solution. A good lab technician will add the salt to be dissolved into a
portion of the solvent and then fill the volumetric flask to the indicator
mark after the salt is dissolved. This method keeps from accidentally
getting the wrong concentration because the salt changed the volume of
solvent.

Editor's note. I had freshman chemistry in 1956. It convinced me I did
not want to work in that field.

Bob,
I don't have your correct address. I thought BOB FORD@compuserve.com would
get you but have tr4ies to send you mail with no luck. Will try the same
thing a different way. I came across a treasure chest of old car manuals
and
want to get rid of them. Do you think there would be any interest and what
is the best way to sell them. I have not made a complete list of manuals (I
know that should be step 1) but have late 40 thru early 90 for several
types
of cars. DeSoto, Studebaker, Nash, Packard, Austin American, M-G, Plymouth,
Pontiac, Buick and a lot of others. I have come across wiring diagram books
(Factory) for several makes, transmission manuals for hydromatic,
Powerglide, hy-drive, hydraflow and I think a turboglide manual that I will
send to you as soon as I get everything sorted out. I have not found
anything on tri 5 Chevys yet but it may be there. I also have old Chilton's
manuals, sales literature and a lot of other stuff. Is the stuff marketable
and if so, how?

This is just a suggestion for people looking for Chevy parts. You can use
eBay.

Log into the eBay Search program and use the key words, "Chevy parts." You
can also narrow the search to 1955-57, or whatever. Then, write down the
Seller ID's of people selling parts for the type of car you're looking for.
Next, get the e-mail addresses for all these people, one at a time. Use
the feature, "Ask seller a question."

Send e-mails to each seller and see if they have what you're after or can
recommend someone who does. I've checked with eBay and they have no
problem with this approach. I have obtained many parts using this method
and have no complaints.

Happy hunting.

In a recent post Steve from Upland, CA mentioned that he would install
C-clip eliminators in a 10 or 12 bolt rear-end if he was going to install
one in a tri-five. I totally agree! Just last weekend my cousin flipped
his 67 Chevy Nova five times as he went through the lights at the end of
the quarter. He was doing 115 mph, an axle broke and due to the design of
the 10 bolt rear-end, the broken axle, wheel and tire slid out of the
differential housing, got caught under the car and caused him to crash. He
was wearing a helmet, the only safety equipment in the car was the factory
lap belt! He's pretty beat up and lucky to be alive. Thank God for the
Safety Safari. To say the car was destroyed is an understatement. The four
bolt axle retention flange used in factory 55-64 rear-ends and 9" fords is
a good design!

Bob,
Yes, water has "holes" in it; we just cannot see the holes. And yes, one
can dissolve salt in water and not increase the displacement.
Interesting question.

I have a question concerning the fender birds of a 56 Chevy. I just
picked
up a nice pair of used ones at a flee market today for use on my 210
wagon.
Question is: where is the exact correct position on the fender to mount
them?
I don't have mounting instructions, but how far back from the
forward-most
point of the fender is the first mounting hole? Any help would be greatly

appreciated!

Wyatt, the front tip of the birds should be 2 1/16 inches IN from the
very
edge of the fenders! I measured mine & they were put on according to the
template that I got with mine! Hope that helps !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My wife and attended a classic car show in Long Beach Washington last
weekend and had intended to enter our "67 Buick. When we were told the
cost of entering was $50 we declined, but paid our daily admission to
look at all the great cars on display.

While driving back to Seattle, we were discussing the cost to improve
these old cars, as well as the cost to enter them. It seems to us that
something is wrong with this picture. We, as a group, spend millions of
dollars to restore our pride and joy, and then someone puts together a show
and we
are required to pay to display our vehicle. The promoters also charge
admission to the public to view the classics. Then there is the tourist
dollars that motel, restaurants and shops collect from the participants,
increasing the tax base for the community and providing employment for
the residents.

Why not get sponsors from the community, large companies and or some of
these parts suppliers to support the shows and at least eliminate the
entry fee or even pay a token amount to the people that spend many hours
and dollars to provide the attraction.

I am thinking about adding an electric fuel pump to my 57. the motor is a
built up 327 with a single 625cfm carb, i plan on leaving the mechanical
pump
and mounting the new one in the trunk off to the side in front of the
spare tire. i thought this might be a good location since it would be out
of
the way in the trunk and better off than on the underside of the body. i
will
also be using an toggle switch to turn the pump on and off which is better
than directly to the ignition switch.
any comments/suggestions?

Hi All,
I've seen a lot of messages on this forum about disc brake conversions
on Tri-5s. Several people I know have done this. One thing they all
agree about is using a power brake booster. Without the power brake
booster you really have to push hard on the brake pedal to stop the car
with disc brakes. While they all say the discs are nice, they are also
of the same opinion when it comes to the power booster. Any opinions
either way out there? Your input is appreciated. Wild Bill

Is it a '56 casting? What was specific about the Powerglide designation?

On behalf of our whole club, I want to express our thanks to you for
speaking at our last club meeting.
We had more members attend that meeting than any club meeting this year.

How could a "car guy" know so much about retirement and financial planning?
I am so happy you
stayed after the meeting and answered all of our questions. Sorry we kept
you there so long, but the information you provided us in that one meeting
was worth the years dues for our club.

My husband and I are planning to retire in 5 years so we have been to
several seminars on retirement planning. You are the first person that we
have heard speak that did not try to sell us something. You told it "Like
it is". We appreciate your straight talk. You are the first person we
have heard talk about retirement that gave us their home phone number and
told us to call you if we needed advice.

Fellow list members, if your clubs has guest speakers come to your
meetings, invite Bob.
I know you will learn a lot from what he has to say.
