Regarding Route 66 and other shows- paying to show your car.
As far as the cost? It's whatever the market will bear. If you don't want
to
pay, then don't go. If everyone agrees they think fees are too high, then
the
number of entries will drop. Route 66 has no problem filling the streets w/

cars every year. Every Car show, unless it's a little local cruise charges

an entry fee. The bulk of the shows I attend charge $20-40 to enter. As
far
as money going to a charity? Well, that's another subject alltogether! Most

of the money helps support the event and pay for the charity's operating
expenses. How much of that money actually makes it to someone who needs it?

If you want to donate, do it where it does the most good. Give blood or
help
out a family at a local church.
To me, I don't have a problem w/ it and I go. I like the chance to show
off
my car and spend the day w/ friends and car enthiusts. If I win, that's
just
icing on the cake. I have friends who hate car shows and the fact they
charge
to show your car keeps them home & their car in the garage. My opinion is
they are missing the boat. These same people think nothing of dropping $20
to
$30 to see a movie or some other source of entertainment. No one is
twisting your arm to go. It's not required. I look at it this way.......

- $30 is a good day's entertainment, even though I have to bring the car.
What else can you do in a day for that amount? As for Route 66? At $80,
that
is a whopping $20 per day of entertainment for the 4 day event. I paid $80

at last minute because I worked, entered car Sat afternoon (for a show that

started Thursday) and won a plaque. Not bad out of 2400 cars. Popular hot
rodding also shot my car during photos. Was it worth the $80.00? You tell
me!

. This usually doesn't pan out as the pumps tend to lose their prime when
mounted higher than the fuel tank. I would mount it ahead of the fuel
tank

What ever you do, keep the fuel lines & pumps out of your trunk area! If
you
install a cell in trunk, a steel firewall between trunk and passenger
compartment is a must! This is an invitation to a fire in the event of an
accident. The last thing you want is a pool of fuel splashing around you.
Remember the nightmare Ford went thru w/ this problem in 60's.

Bob,

I noted an adv. in your most-recent "For Sale" list for a '55 Chevy
Stepside
truck "with original flathead 6-cyl". Now, this is either one unique Chevy
- or
the seller is possibly new to the hobby and confused about terminology!
With the
later being the most likely possibility, I'd offer the following glossary
type
definitions that could possibly be of some assistance to those new to the
hobby.

Flathead: An engine with both the intake and exhaust valves in the block,
also
commonly called an L-head. Examples would be Pontiac 6 & 8 cyl. engines
through
1954, Plymouth & Dodge passenger car 6 cyl. through 1959.

OHV: An engine with Over Head Valves, in other words intake and exhaust
valves
in the cylinder head or heads. Examples would be any Chevy 6-cyl engine,
the
Cadillac and Olds V8's introduced for the 1949 model year, or just about
any
Buick engine (other that used in the Marquette in the early '30's).

F- Head: An engine with the intake valves in the head and the exhaust
valves in
the block. The most common example would be the 134 cubic inch 4 cyl.
engine
used in many Willys Jeep models beginning in 1950.

OHC: An Over Head Cam engine is one which places the cam (or cams) over the
top
of the combustion chambers. Examples would include the Cadillac Northstar
V8 and
just about any completely new engine designed in the last few years. An
early
example would include the J-Series Dusenberg straight-8 from 1929.

Knight Engine: Also called a "Sleeve Valve" engine. An engine with sleeve
rather
than poppet valves. The sleeves are driven by individual connecting rods
and act
to cover/uncover intake and exhaust ports in the cylinder walls. Examples
would
include the Moline Knight and the Willys Knight/Stearns Knight powerplants
used
through the early 1930's.


V6: An engine with two banks of three cylinders in each bank , as
distinguished
from an inline 6 which has 6 cylinders in one straight row. Examples of a
V6
include the 4.3 Litre engine used in many Chevy S-10 trucks, while an
example of
an inline 6 would include the 216 cubic inch Chevy "Stovebolt 6" and the
4.2
Litre Dual OverHead Cam engine just now being introduced by Chevy in the
new
Trailblazer and by GMC in the new Envoy. Similarly, engines using V2, V4,
V8,
V10, and V12 configurations are also relatively common. Less common are the
V16
(Cadillac and Marmon) and V5 (one bank with two and one bank with three
cylinders).

Small Block: A slang term, which has come into common use to refer to the
series
of Chevy V8 engines which share basic geometry with the V8 introduced for
the
'55 model year. Common factory-stock displacements include 265, 283, 301/2,
307,
327, 350 and 400 cubic inches. Also sometimes referred to as the "Mouse
Motor".

Big Block: Again, a slang term in common use. Refers to the series of Chevy
V8
engines introduced into production for 1965 and having stock displacements
of
396, 402, 427, and 454 cubic inches. (A truck engine with 366 cubic inches
has
also been produced for some time and an 8.1 Litre version has just been
introduced this year). Also sometimes called a "Rat Motor".

Hardtop: A style of body which has no center pillar structure (or post)
behind
the front door. Common examples would include the Chevrolet Belair as
introduced
for the 1950 model year and the Ford Victoria introduced in the 1951 model
year.

I realize this is just a start. Hopefully others would take the time and
attempt
to similarly define some additional automotive nomenclature which can
sometimes
lead to confusion as well.

Regarding if car owners should pay to participate in car shows. As car
owners we know we have spent a lot of time and money on the cars, and that
they attract people. Therefore, the cars should be worth something to be
shown. I'd certainly prefer not to pay, but without the money there would
be far fewer shows. There are a lot of expenses which go into putting on
the shows, and there are limits to what sponsors will pay. Organizers also
know they have fiscally foolish people in the form of car owners who
frequently have already spent more money than their car is worth, and will
pay to show it off. I think we need to evaluate if we as car owners want
to
pay for the privilege to participate and feed our egos by showing our cars.
Personally, I try to pay for events which offer more entertainment than
just
a car show, or events that I would want to pay admission for without
showing
my car, or events that are helping a worth while charity. The profiteers
who charge both the participants, and the viewers turn me off. If sponsors
were flush with cash to run these events, I'd say the car owners should be
paid to bring their cars; however, you would only have a select group of
cars the organizers would be willing to pay for, and inevitably fewer and
smaller shows. The fact that the shows are as large and as numerous, helps
to further our hobby. So I say go to the shows you enjoy, but if you
wouldn't want to pay admission to the event, or don't think your enjoyment
is worth the expense, go to another show, stay home, or just go driving.

What has happened to hot rodding? I grew up believing that the true hot
rodder was a guy who couldn't afford a brand new car, so he finds some
piece of junk and fixes it up to be as good as and possibly better than a
new car for a fraction of the cost. It seems like all the recent posts of
cars for sale are priced from $25,000 and up. If I were to spend $30,000
on one of my cars I would have to put about $15,000 worth of gold plating
on it or something. I guess when you pay a mechanic $45 per hour to work
on you car because you can't do the work it might take$30,000 to get what
you want. May be I should quit my job and work on classics full time.
With all the money I could make I would buy a new vette and leave those
suckers in their old junkers in the dirt. I really love tri-fives, my
first car was a '55 belair sedan, I currently have 7 of them in different
states of completion, I just can not see spending 60 grand on one. Just
one mans opinion.

I've got a suggestion for the problem of no price on the car ads...make the
price a necessity for listing the car. If no price is included, shoot back

Bob, et al

In response to Jim Baylor and the others regarding entry fees for showing
your vehicle in a show. I have a 47 Indian motorcycle that I used to show
alot. I no longer show it, partly for the reasons mentioned in the others
letters. I spend a ton of money and work on my vehicle and they make the
profit off the show and charge me to be the attraction. Once I got over
the ego trip of having everybody tell me how great my bike looked, I
realized that I really had more fun riding it than showing it. If it
wasn't great, I wouldn't have it in the show, so why did I need the ego
strokes?
I am restoring a 57 convertible and I have no intention of paying anyone to
let me show it off. I will continue to attend drive in Cruise Nights as
this is really where you can enjoy your hobby. If we all boycott the "pay
to enter car shows" there would be fewer of them. However it is not too
hard to get a good Cruise night established in your area. Any comments?

The 9/20/2000 distribution includes an entry indicating that "the [tapered
roller bearing] hubs & bearings from '64 to '72 full size Chevy's will work
on
'55-'57s."

This may be correct, but I'm skeptical. I know the full-size '71-'72 Chevy
used
the larger five-bolt wheel pattern as on the Pontiac, Buick and Olds, while
the
earlier full-size Chevy models through 1970 that I'm familiar with used the
smaller five-bolt that was the same as '55-'57. I'd tend to suspect that it
is
actually the '64-'70 full-size Chevy hubs & bearings used with drum brakes
that
are actually the desired replacement. It's possible that the bearings on
the
full-size '71-'72 Chevy models (which were 100% front disc brakes) differed
from
those on the other full-size GM cars, but I doubt it.

Anyone have anything to positively put this issue to rest once and for all?

Bob, I have an old 4 barrel Carter carb that I was told came off a 56
Chevy. The tag is missing and my book only identifies by tag numbers. The
number on the top of the carb is '1098' and on the main body is '0-953'.
Do you or any members have a book that identifies carbs by these numbers.

I was absolutely 'shocked' to see your latest edition of Tri-Five Chevy's

I do not recall any list quite like this one over the past two years I've
read your weekly letter. Not a car UNDER $30 grand, and one for $72,000! I
believe that would be a record.

If this is a 'sign of the times,' I 'missed the boat,' and am, apparently,
out of the running. If, on the other hand, your optimistic readers think
that
Bill Gates has decided to have another mid-life crisis and corner the
market
on Tri-Fives, then GOOD LUCK to all of you in this week's FOR SALE List!

I can remember when a hopeful Chevy buyer could still dream of that great
Tri-Five sitting in his/her garage or driveway. Now, after reading this
week's list, I will have to sell the garage--and the home that comes with
it--just to afford a Classic Chevy:) !

Owe how I yearn for a return to those 'thrilling days of yesteryear,' when
we
could read your list, see a great bargain for $15k to $25k and, as the
Everly
Brothers used to say: "Dream, Dream, Dream, ..............."

I have a question about cars for sale listed as original. I have seen adds
such as this "For sale: '57 hard top all original, over $30,000 invested
will sell for $25,000." How can you invest $30,000 in an original car?
You can pay $30,000 to purchase an original car or you can invest $30,000
in restoring a car to like new condition. I do not consider a car restored
to like new condition as "original." Any thoughts on this.
