I help some help, after about a year and a half I am getting closer to
getting my 55 Nomad done, what I am looking for now is a quality paint job
at
a reasonable cost. I do not know if that's possible, but I am trying. By
the time the painter gets the car all the body work will be completed and
will be TOTALLY rust free and a straight car. My body person and I will
deliver car and put back together, I live in the Valencia, California area
which is just north of the San Fernando Valley. I have heard horror
stories
and would like not to have one of my own so any assistance, guidance would
be
appreciated. Thanks I can be reached at DOUG COURT@aol.com

Editor's note. I would like to know of a good paint shop in Southern
California also.
Like you, I know of some horror stories.

Art,

Regarding sticky vinyl or plastic. I have not tried this, but I'm told it
works for other plastic collectibles. Pack the sticky plastic in Corn
Starch. I understand this should be a significant amount of corn starch
covering any surfaces of the sticky item. Supposedly this will dry out the
goo with time, and make the item presentable, but not as nice as material
that never had this problem. I believe the process of drying out the piece
takes a lot of time, so this might not be possible, or work with your
vinyl,
but hopefully it helps someone.

Good Luck

> Dear Bob!

So sorry about your stolen car. I wish you that it was not saw in pieces
and is
still in your country, so may be one of the list members will discover it
at a
very noble auction and tell it to the world.

In my country (Germany) they steal VW Rabbit, BMW or Mercedes Benz, mostly
in
grey color. They ship it to Eastern Europe. I think (or I hope!!) with a
yellow
55 Chevy a car thief has as much success as if he tries to steel a police
car.
And he will cry when he wants to sell this car. For serious: it happens,
but
mostly those cars were taken for "fun" and left back when the gas tank is
empty. Also bad because of the possible damages but at least the car is
still
there.

By the way, what is a "lojack"?
I would like to meet you and the other Chevy enthusiasts at your home. So
please give me the way from Miami Harbour to your house. The only little
thing
I have to manage is to complete my car in one month and then ship it and me
to
the USA in one day :-)

Dieter from Munich, Germany

Editor's note. I am not an expert on the Lojack. I believe it is a device
that sends out a signal
that the police can track. Anyone on this list know more about it. And if
any list member is in law
enforcement, please let us know if Lojack really works.

Just learned of another auto theft similar to yours, Bob. This 1957
turquoise and white 2 door BA hardtop was stolen in Washington State from a

city bus park and ride lot. Classic owners beware -- sounds like this is
going to be a popular MO for theives.

Bob, your new "Cars For Sale" format is terrific. It took a couple of
weeks
to get it right but it is great now.

I know you are aware of the All Chevy Show at Guaranty Chevrolet in Santa
Ana, CA on October 7 since you mentioned it several times. Thanks! We are

still expecting you to send in a show car registration and membership
application. Our show does sell out, but as of today, Thursday September
28,
we still have spaces left. Anyone in Orange County, CA with a pre 1973
Chevrolet should sign up pronto. I am certain we will be sold out before
the
show date, October 7.

October 7 is the All Chevy Show and October 29 (a couple of miles away) we
party at Bob Ford's house! Be there or be square!

If anyone needs show information we can supply it via e-mail, fax, mail,
telephone, snail-mail, pony express or any other method. Just let us know.

I would like to put some custom wheels on my 57. Question is how wide of
tire and rim can you put under the rear of a 57 chevy without modifying
fenderwells or relocating spring hangers? Does anyone know if a 15 x 8
wheel with maybe a p245 tire fit.

Dear Bob,

Regarding the current discussion about whether classic car owners should
pay
to enter their cars in shows, my opinion is, yes they should. There are
many
factors in running car shows which we can see, such as prizes, food, etc.
but
one factor that is unseen is liability insurance. This can be a huge cost,
and no show should operate without it.

A case in point is a show in a small town in our state. The show used to
take
place at a motel that had a huge lot in front which was kept mown and
provided ideal parking for the show cars. The motel had a paved parking
area
in front which was perfect for events, and had an upper floor with an outer

deck which was great for viewing the events. In many ways, it was a perfect

place for a classic car show.

One year, a spectator stumbled while viewing the cars and sued the motel.
The
result is, no more car shows at this location. It is my understanding the
spectator was not seriously injured, but nowadays, that seldom matters.

If we want to show our cars at well-run car shows with nice events and
beautiful trophies, I think we should be willing to fork out an entry fee.
Look at how much we spend on building and maintaining these cars.

Regarding cruise nights as an alternative, I actually enjoy the cruises
more
than the shows. To me, driving the cars and hobnobbing with other
enthusiasts
is the whole point of the hobby.

Hi Bob & all. Looks like the car show topic has
been well covered. Our annual event, for which
we charge a fee (Classic Chevy Reunion) has
been running for 8 years now. It's a 2-3 day event
with lots of fun for the participants with little to no
provision for spectators. To make it worthwhile for
the car owners and families, we try to put together
a goody bag (tour pack), that each car gets that has
stuff in it worth approximately the registration fee. We
also have at least two tours/cruises within the show
so that the cars and the area we are in that particular
year can be enjoyed by the participants. We do get a
lot of free door prizes and volunteer help but couldn't
put the show on without a reg. fee So I guess it comes
down to what you are looking for. Like most anywhere
else, we have plenty to activities to attend each weekend,
but it looks like the shows that charge a fee and offer you
nothing but a place to park your car and your butt are on
their way out. As I mentioned in my last entry, most everyone
these days ask themselves, what do I get for the reg. fee?
'Bummer' about your stolen car. Doubt 'bummer' about
your get together being so far away. Have Fun - Go Mad !!

Hi Bob,
The Beachboy is Dennis Wilson. He's no longer with us. Warren Oates has
also died, and I hear that Laurie Bird was a suicide. James Taylor is
healthy, although he's lost quite a bit of hair. Interestingly, the
director, Monte Hellman, was one of the producers of "Reservoir Dogs",
which
was Quentin Tarantino's first movie. Of course, he went on to direct "Pulp
Fiction". I'm reading your list hoping I can find a 55 like the one in
"Blacktop"--primered, big block, 4 speed, but straight and really
well-engineered. I'll keep looking.

Dear Bob,

Just a few lines to let you know how I look forward to receiving your Chevy

List each week. Keep up the great work. So sorry to learn of your car being

stolen. Keep us posted on the aftermath.

Several of this week's readers mentioned the movie classic, "Two Lane
Blacktop," which costarred James Taylor, Warren Oaks and my late
'brother-in-spirit,' Dennis Wilson, cofounder and drummer/vocalist of The
Beach Boys. This movie has become somewhat of a cult classic. It was
recently
voted one of the "Top 100 Movies You've Never Heard Of." Dennis Wilson: Carry Me Home

I was managing The Beach Boys when the opportunity came about for Denny to
audition for a part in the '71 Monte Hellman classic. It was originally
intended that he would be the 'driver,' but that role ultimately went to JT

and Denny was cast as the mechanic. Warren Oaks was the owner of a bright
flashy GTO who challenges the guys to a road race, and Laurie Bird plays
the
runaway hitchhiking teenager. Harry Dean Stanton also has a role.

Denny's role was a great bit of 'type casting' as DW was always the surfer,

hot rodder, and actually raced a Shelby Cobra in the mid-60s. I would often

accompany DW on trips to Southland drag strips. I always called Denny the
"Steve McQueen of the Beach Boys." He relished in his real life role as
'teen
idol,' sex symbol for the band, and a rugged 'man's man.' Dennis was, in
reality, the spirit of The Beach Boys. His rough exterior, however, gave
way
to one of the kindest and most loving people I've ever know. He was a loyal

friend for over twenty years and a day rarely passes when I don't think
about
him and the great times we shared in the 60s, 70s and early 80s.

On the day of the audition at the Universal lot in Burbank, DW was too
nervous and asked me to drive him to the audition. We went into the office
of
one of the producers or casting agents and they interviewed Denny. He blew
them away with his candor, easy going manner, knowledge of cars and
handsome
good looks. Somewhere along the way, they decided to cast him as the
mechanic
and JT got the 'driver' role.

If you have never seen Two Lane, you're in for a rare treat. Not only is it

an opportunity to check out a very cool '55 Chevy, but also take a
nostalgic
trip across the Southwest USA as the two stars head east picking up extra
cash by drag racing.

As Paul Harvey would say, "and now you know the rest of the story."

Editor's note.
Fred, you must have had a very interesting life as the Beach Boys manager.
Did you ever consider writing a book about your experiences with the Beach
Boys. My guess that such a book would be a big success. (and bring you a
lot of money)

About a year ago, I was watching the Today show and the Beach Boys were
going to be singing on it. Katy Kuric went outside to talk to them. She
could not believe the crowd to see them at 8AM in the morning. She said
the crowd was as big as the one they had last week for Ricky Martin and
that was one of the largest crowd yet. So there is still a lot of
interest in the Beach Boys. By the way, who is Ricky Martin? (Am I
showing my age?)

I've noted a lot of comments re the prices charged for admission and/or
vehicle
display at various shows. My own thoughts are simply to vote with your
dollars.
If something seems too much for what you feel you can get out of it - don't
participate. The only rub comes when one doesn't know in advance what the
charge
or charges will be.

The comments/complaints about shows where "the public gets to walk in for
free
but we have to pay to display our cars" just don't ring true (for this area
of
the Mid-West anyway). I don't know of any free shows around here, unless
you
consider the "cruises" held at a local Drive-In or parking lot.Typically,
the
charge for an adult walk-in admission to a car show / swap meet will be
around
$4 while a $25 charge is close to the norm if you display a vehicle. With
most
shows/swaps though, if one pays to display a vehicle there are usually some
off-setting benefits such as a goody-bag, real convenient parking or
whatever.

A survey of list recipients - seeking to summarize car show practice (or
practices) in the various areas of the country - would be something that
might
be worthwhile. Possibly there are some great events out there that are
little-known outside of the "local" area!
