Some things I learned about dealing with insurance companies. It had been
over a month since my car was stolen. I contacted my insurance company and
asked why they had not paid my claim. They said they needed a copy of the
police report where I reported the theft. They claimed they had requested
it and had not received it from the police department.

I went to the police department and got a copy of the report today. I will
mail it to the insurance company and have them sign for the letter so I can
be sure they got it. I asked the police if my insurance company had
requested a copy of the report. Their files showed that they had requested
a copy of the report BUT they had not enclosed the $12 it takes to get a
copy. The police had sent my insurance company a letter asking for the
$12 and had not received a reply.

I will keep you informed as to how this comes out.

Editor's note. Call the high end car dealers (BMW, LEXUS, CADDY, ETC) in
your area and ask them where you can buy a Lojack. Before you buy one
check with your police department to see if they have the equipment to
track a car with it on the car.

Hello Bob,
Please add the following items to your "Parts for Sale" list.
1-I have a custom made mailbox, ONE OF A KIND" that is decorated to
resemble the side of a 55 chevy bel air car. The mail box is totally legal,
it measures 21 1/4" by 11 1/4". Each side has a bel air door spear, a gold
bel air crest, the word "Bel Air" on it. These emblems and chrome are in
mint condition. It is painted white and has lower paint dividers on each
side of the mailbox. The front lid has a dash script, "Bel air" on it.
This box was built for a gentleman who also loves 55's from California. The
box has a small dent and a small piece of paint chipped on the right front
corner where the lid closes. It is very easily fixed and does not affect
the looks of the mailbox. The damage was caused when it fell off the shelf
in my garage during a hurricane. Check out the CCI club mailbox and other
companies such as this and you will see their mailboxes are cheap in
comparison to mine. Due to health reasons I had to sell my "55" and I do
not want this item to remind me of my beloved car. I will sell it to anyone
for $100.00, shipping included. Please email me and I will provide you with
pictures to verify the beauty of this mailbox. The chrome and the emblems
cost over $150.00 if you wanted to remove them for use on your car. I also
have a complete set of window whisker stripping and the chrome channels for
a "55-57" chevy 2-door sedan. This item is new in the box and sells for
$139.00 new. I will sell it for $75.00 plus shopping. If interested please
email me at hwilkes1@tampabay.rr.com. or call me at 813-651-3666 and leave
message, and I will return your call asap. I am located in the Tampa, Fl.
area. Thanks, Harold W. Wilkes

I'm nowhere near needing interior material, but thinking ahead, I was
wondering if anyone would have, or know of a source for NOS or reproduction

interior material for a 56 210 wagon trim #609 (charcoal pattern vinyl and
ivory starfrost vinyl). I see that interiors are reproduced for the 210
sedans, but they don't even use starfrost in those. I was considering
installing a 210 sedan interior, but would rather have the correct stuff.
Also, I was wondering if anyone has a matching set of 4 door wagon door
window vent shades? These are not the same as a 4 door sedan's, except the

front doors.

Thanks,
Wyatt Smolick

I sent a pair of '57 front bumper assec. guards out to be rechromed last
winter. Of course, the resto. lasted a few months longer than anticipated.
I
put them on the car this past Aug. and noticed that I have 2 "Right side"
guards, I was wondering why the drivers side guard was out about 15 degrees

left. I've been unable to settle this so I've decided to try and located
another left--either re-chromed or not but hopefully straight.
If any of you restoration guys out there have one please e-mail me.
Dover57@aol.com. Lesson to be learned---Check all of your parts very
carefully when you get them back! TRhanks, Frank

<< I think we should be willing to fork out an entry fee.
Look at how much we spend on building and maintaining these cars.
Regarding cruise nights as an alternative, I actually enjoy the cruises
more than the shows. To me, driving the cars and hobnobbing with other
enthusiasts is the whole point of the hobby.

Jan Mowrey >>

Boy, did I get a computer full of hate mail about my opinion re: paying for

entering car shows. Lots of people told me they prefer to go to the free
"cruise night" shows or would only go to a charity spionsored event. The
free
shows are all that, free to you. I have talked to several people who run
these shows and alot of them are ending because of lack of support. We've
lost 8 local shows here just lately. Why? Here, they usually hire a DJ to
play the 50's music, and most citys require you to pull a permit to host
the
event. They all say they have to pay for "power" to run the event, and then

you have lighting, trash, food, restrooms, etc to deal with. Most offer
discount coupons for food or drink, but most people prefer to bring their
own. Then they have the 50/50, w/ 1/2 either going to the club (to help
fund
your free cruise nite) or charity, and the other 1/2 goes to the lucky
winner. The show I attended yesterday (free) was in a restaraunt parking
lot
and the restaraunt sponsored the event. It was free to all attended as well

as no entry fee. Results? 65 cars showed up, 2 people actually ate at the
restaraunt, inc me (but everyone used their bathrooms!). When it came to
the
50/50 drawing, 5 people bought tickets- that's it! The 50/50 winner was a
free ticket not purchased, but given out when he arrived. He won a whopping

$14.00! When I spoke to the club hosting the event & the restaraunt owner,
they said this was the last show they would have (they have had a cruise
there for the last 5 yrs!).
The point I'm trying to make is if you choose to attend a free show (
nothing's for free- someone is paying, maybe not you) then SUPPORT THE
SHOW!
Eat at the sponsor's restaraunt, join in on the 50/50, etc. Don't just be a

sponge and think because you built the car, everyone owes you something.
And
leave the cooler at home, spend a couple of bucks and buy their drinks. It
won't kill you!
And if you think you are above the rest of us, refusing to support the show

or refusing to enter your car at a pay per event, stay home and stop
complaining.
Regarding event paying YOU to enter your car? I have NEVER heard of an
event
such as this. I suggest you put together your own show, pay all the
entrants
to show their cars and find out for yourself how difficult it is to put on
one of these shows, and how deep in your own pockets you will have to dig
to
make it work.

Hello Bob,

Here are the facts on Lojack.

It is a small radio transmitter which is installed in an "obscure location"
in the desired vehicle. (usually under the seat/dashboard).

The system is dependent upon the vehicles electrical supply for power.

When you report the vehicle stolen, the Police Cruiser is installed with a
special receiver supplied by Lojack. (these Cruisers are easy to spot -
they
have "numerous antenna's on their roofs). Once the Police Cruiser can
determine stolen vehicle location by the strength of the signal received by
the antenna array.

Here are the downsides:

1) - professional thieves are aware of Lojack. When they steal a vehicle -
they will take it to a location "and let the vehicle cool" for a few days.
If the vehicle is still there after this time period - they will then take
the vehicle to their "chopshop" and either break it down for parts - or
export out of the USA.

No doubt, the thieves do not want the Police "visiting" their "place of
business" so the "cool down" time is important.

2). If the electricial system of the vehicle is disconnected - the Lojack
is
DEAD.

3). The more brave professionals have a Lojack receiver - so they can tell
if the desired vehicle is "worth it" or it needs to be quickly disabled.

One interesting note I was made aware of - those vehicles which are stolen
for export - are usually sent out in the those large seagoing containers.
U.S. Customs does not inspect OUTGOING containers! So the chance of
locating a stolen vehicle is very slim at best.

Hope that assists you. Lojack is a good deterrent - but if they want your
baby - they ARE going to get her.

Best regards,

Apparently "Lo Jack" may not be marketed nationally, since there have been
several comments from people on the list who have never heard of it. I am
not an
expert on it, since I am fortunate to not live in a high-theft rate area
and
have never purchased the Lo Jack unit and/or service.

Essentially what Lo Jack is though, is a small, internally-powered
transponder
(a combination radio receiver and transmitter) that is installed in a
hidden
location on a vehicle. Normally, the transponder just stays there in its'
inert
state. However, in the event that the vehicle is stolen, you notify your
local
police - advising them that the vehicle is equipped with Lo Jack. Either
the
local police or Lo Jack personnel then send out a coded signal. The coded
signal activates the hidden transponder - which begins broadcasting a
homing
signal that can be tracked, tri-angulated, and the vehicle thus located.

The device/service is not exactly cheap, from what I understand. If one
resides
in a location where thefts occur relatively frequently though, it may prove
quite desirable. I seem to recall that initial installation is around $750,
but
I'm not sure on this. For obvious reasons, information as to exactly where
on a
given vehicle the transponder is installed, what the range of the
transmitted
signal is, what radio frequencies are employed, etc. is not made widely
available (nor should it be)!

A great book about painting your car is you guessed it "How To Paint Your
Car" by David H. Jacobs Jr. I got the book from Amazon.com for about 15.oo

and I really suggest it to anyone doing bodywork or seeking to have it done

it is very informative. And as a bounus it has a 56 Bel Air Convert. on the

cover!!-Randy McCoy, Seattle.
