I have just bought this car for my 37th birthday and I am very excited.
However the car is in need of new front sheet metal fenders, hood, grill as
well as a windshield, door glass and a passenger door are needed.
I do have most of what is needed but wonder if any one out there has a
front
end that is( MINT )they want to sell??? so as to save me some time and $$
in
my restoration. I live in San Francisco California and have a truck and
trailer and could come pick up any where if the deal was sweet enough.

Bob & all:

I posted a few months ago about my desire to remove the badly battered
spare
tire well from the trunk floor of my '57 sedan, so I can fit a full-width
fuel tank under the floor. I am customizing the trunk, and don't plan to
use the "well" anyway, so this would fill the blank space under the car,
and
give me extra cruising capacity. Makes sense, eh?

I didn't really get any responses on this particular mod, and still wonder
if anyone has put such a tank in his/her Classic. I guess I really just
need to crawl under every car in the boneyard (that fills from the left
side) with a tape measure. I really was hoping, though, that I was not the
first to want to do this, and that I could benefit from your experience.
Any ideas short of the high price for a custom tank?

Thanks in advance!

I hope someone can help me understand brakes better. Many of my friends
are putting disk brakes on their car. They claim it helps them stop better.
I am no expert on this subject but it seems to me that drums brakes have
more area where the brake pads touch metal. If this is the case, it would
seem logical that drum brakes will stop a car faster than disk brakes.
What am I missing here?.

Bob,

I am going to swap a V8 into my 56 chevy and need to dispose of the 235
six.
Does anyone know what the value of this engine is? Or would I be better
off
hauling to the local scrap metal dealer? Its a complete 235 with
bellhousing, 3spd and clutch with 67,000 miles on it. Any advice would be
appreciated.

Hi Bob et al--

I've got a '55 BelAir 2DHT. I'm in the process of restoration and I need
to
know if anyone has a source, or knows of an individual, that restores the
door flippers and/or upper stainless for 2DHT. ...

Classic Chevy International has a section in the "How To Restore Your 1957
Chevy" book and a kit that provides instruction on how to completely
restore
the flippers. The kit includes new whisker strips. You basically carefully
pull
the old whisker strip up and away from the stainless and then pull or roll
the
old whisker strip out with pliers. The article warns up you go slow and be
careful in doing this. I've successfully followed their procedure and
restored
a set of flippers and recommend their (or Denny Williams & Harold
Louisana's
procedure). This article is also in CCI's Tech Book though it is a little
more
expensive than the "How to Restore..." book.

I agree with the posts - if someone wants your car they will find a way
to take it. However, the longer you make a thief work at stealing your
car, the better chance you have that they will move on to another,
especially if it's a joy ride situation or someone thinking your car
might be an easy mark. The cut-off ignition switch works in that
regard and/or a fuel cut-off switch works (you don't have to have an
electric fuel pump to use one of these - you can add an electrically
operated shut-off valve in your fuel line connected to an on-off switch
for use with a mechanical fuel pump). But neither of those address the
situation where someone with a tow truck comes along and tows your car
away - something they can do in less than a minute, if they aren't
concerned about doing it without damage or safely. One way to slow
down the tow truck situation is always back into a parking space,
preferably against a curb or wall, put your car in park, and set the
emergency brake. Still won't stop them if they have the time, but it
does take longer and may discourage them.

Seems like I've heard of a system that uses a switch operated valve in
the brake hydraulic line. You press your foot on the brake, put on the
switch and the valve maintains the pressure in the system until the
switch is turned off. It's like the brake pedal is on all the time.
Not sure if it works for all four wheels or just the rear. Anyone know
of a system like this. Then someone couldn't even roll your car
without the wheels off the ground - slide it but not roll it. Which
means that, if you back into a parking place, a tow truck would have to
pull the car out far enough from the front, sliding the rear tires,
unhook the front, and then hook up the rear to tow it away.

Another system that I've used is a silent remote alarm that I picked up
years ago at radio shack. Good for a 1/8 mile or something like
that. Only problem I had with it was false alarms which I never could
figure out what was setting them off. It was motion/noise sensitive
and could also be connected to the courtesy light system in the doors.
There was remote that gave off a noise and a light that lit up when the
system in the car was activated. I've always figured most professional
thieves are familiar with all alarm systems, so adding a sticker on your
car that the car is protected by this or that system, just allows the
thief to know what he has to do to de-activate the system. That's why
I liked the silent remote system. I would think that in 10 years since
I bought my system, the technology has improved ten-fold for a system
like this.

Ok, this is a weird question, but I've had a car sitting around since
Juneish, I did put some gas stabilizer in the tank, but the gas smells
awful
anyway. After replacing the $120 electric fuel pump, the car is now running

again after about 8 months of sitting. The tags renewal requires the car to

pass emissions tests. Now, I've probably got 1/2 tank of gas in the car,
and
don't really want to drain it out if I don't have to. What are the chances
of
dumping in some Octane boost, etc, and having this car pass emissions with
old gas? Does old gas pollute more than "new" gas? Anyone ever run across
this before? I"m sure it's much less efficient, but I'm not sure how it
will
affect the emissions test, as it's gotten more stringent here in VA, and
requires the ol' Treadmill test now. I was thinking of topping it off with
high-oct gas, putting some Boost in along with it, and maybe some methanol
alky to boost the oxy content ( any witches available with some eye of newt

and hair of dog? ) I really don't want to have to pump out 7-8 gallons of
gas
if I don't have to, although with the electric pump, will really be alot
easier, anyway. I'd also hate to fail the tests due to just bad gas, so I"m

willing to do whatever is necessary, including pumping the gas out into
another car, and then filling it up with fresh gas. Anyone have any
experience with bad / old gas and Emissions testing? Please reply direct to

Bob,

I would like to revisit the roller bearing conversion one more time. I
think
someone on the postings had a source for the bearings. Who is the
manufacturer for these and what is their phone number or E-mail address?
Also, is it the 64 - 68 full size Chevy hubs that will work on the 55- 56
with the roller bearings? Do the other full size GM's ie: Pontiac,
Oldsmobile, Buick from that era use the same hubs and will those work?

Also, I am converting my 56 over from a 6 cyl to a V-8 this winter. Is
there
any market for 235 cu in 6yl's? This one has 67,000 miles on it. Otherwise

its going to the local scrap metal dealer since I don't have room to store
it. I live near Indianapolis.

Really enjoy the listing, thanks for taking the time to do it.

of course having a wire that looks like it belongs there (my
suggestion with distributor wire) is not good? ;)

one can be creative and make the wire non-conductve in a neat
way. this is the simplest way for the average person without electrical
experience to quickly make it tougher on a thief.

for example, take out the connector under the rubber 'boot'. then when
you put the cable back onto the distributor there is no contact. you just
have to carry another good cable with you each time you start the car. or
store it in the trunk hidden away.

of course, one can always have a switch installed by a mechanic but i
think it's easier to override this switch than the 'distributor cable'
idea i mentioned.

however it will be better than doing nothing. but in comparing the 2 i
think the 'distributor cable' is more effective.

> know
> how the electrical system work, so they can work around it. But a lot of

but when they bypass the ignition switch, without the cable to the coil
the car wont run.

i suppose having both methods would be the best way.

i'd say most of use dont have an electric fuel pump.

crooks have all sorts of gadgets to cut any sort of metal and in fact,
there are torches that will liquefy metals in a few seconds.

i heard that some even slide cars onto a tow truck without even starting
the car.

the best one can do is the 2 methods described (distributor cutoff
and a kill switch) above but those are only
good if you go into a store to buy something for 10 minutes or so.

Hi Bob & all. Yesiree, boys, Wix Filters have
done it again! The 2000 version of their diecast
collectibles is indeed the 1955 Chevy two door
hardtop in Red/Beige at 1:24 scale. It is all that
Sandy Pierce said and more with opening hood,
doors, trunk and removable spare, steerable and
more. For those not in the know, Wix runs a promo
vehicle(s) each year from Oct to the next Mar.and
that is it, thus unlike so many others, these are
limited and very collectible. For example, they brought
out a '59 El Camino towing a '57 Chevy on a trailer back
in 1993 ('94?), the fourth in their series, which is a beauty.
The first one in the series now brings $200.00 +/-, if
you can find one. As a collector on original GM/Chevy
produced literature and promotional items, I couldn't resist
these from Wix. I do have every one in the series from Wix,
so if you can't find this year's '55 in your area, give me a shout;
or the '59/'57 for that matter. While I'm at it, one other area
that I have deviated from the GM/Chevy only items in my
collection is in limited edition prints by a few artists such as
Ken Eberts, Jack Schmitt and David Snyder. I would draw your
attention to two of Snyder's more recent pieces, namely
'East Side Chevrolet' and '57 Chevy Showcase'. These are
outstanding works of art, featuring, in the first case a '55 and
a '56 Chevy and, of course the '57 Chevy in the latter. These
are limited prints (to 750 and 500 respectively). Again, keep
a sharp eye out for these, for they are hard to find, but worth
the effort to acquire. I also have a couple of these to spare, if
you can't find them in your area. Finally, I would be happy to
send along my list/s for '55, '56 or '57 of original Chevy promo
items and literature to anyone who may request them.

Bob,

Sorry to hear about your car loss.

While "surfing", I came across this web-site that I thought might be of
interest to our group, especially since one of the "hot" topics of late is
auto theft. The site is www.powerlock.com.

Also, I must of missed what kind of car you had stolen. My brother's best
friend had his '89 Toyota Camry stolen right out from under his nose, as he

was sleeping in the room not 6 ft. from where his car was parked.
Apparently, it was a group of kids in his neighborhood that took Camry's
joy-riding, as when they were caught that same night (they got nervous when

a police car passed them and make a quick U-turn), they had a key-ring full

of Camry keys. Yes, the keys around that time frame were interchangeable.
My
brother had an '88 Wagon, and his friend's '89 Sedan keys fit his doors.
Camry owners beware!!

Keep up the good work,
Troy

Editor's note. Troy it was my 57 210 that was stolen.

i think this device is better than having nothing on the brake pedal.
it surely will make it more difficult. most thieves want to get out fast
and not drive very slowly - as in drive gear with no gas.

however any 55 - 57 car will attract lots of attention parked all alone so
realistically no device will work very well.
