I am looking to get rid of a 57 Powerglide. It came out of a 6 cylinder 57

BelAir 4door sedan. Can this also be used with a V8? $20 takes it, but I
won't ship it; you must come to pick it up. On the same token, I have a 55

6cylinder head for sale. $20 also takes that. I live about an hour NW of
Philadelphia, just outside of Reading, PA.

I own a pin business called Quality Lapel Pins and I would like to make

and I can deliver in 30 days!!!

I also make dash plaques, but try wearing them on your hat! Seriously, the
dash plaques are $0.25 to $0.30 per square inch, with unlimited colors! I
can deliver in 10 days.

I am a "car guy" and I make the best car stuff. Send your car show needs
to me and I will do the rest.

To all list members-If any of you are in So. Calif. on Oct. 29th, I highly
suggest you go to Meet The Editor at his house, as he has invited all list
members to attend. I had the opportunity to meet Bob earlier this month, as
I
was in the L.A. area at that time. Unfortunately, I couldn't stay down
there
that long to be able to attend his invitation on the 29th. Bob is a super
guy & you will appreciate all his efforts just that much more if you go to
meet him in person at his beautiful home in Villa Park on the 29th!!!!!!!
Thanks again Bob for your great hospitality, your great list, & allowing me

to visit you before the scheduled date! Richard

Here is some 50s trivia for you.
What was the last year Chevy used leaf springs in the rear of their cars?
>>
I believe it was the '57 Richard

Editor's note. Richard, that is what I thought until I checked my
references. According to my references in 1958 Chevy put coil springs in
the rear of some of their cars but not all of them.

Hi Bob, my name is Mark. I was wondering if any one has tried to use the
Treadle Vac with the disc brake setup? I was going to try to put an
adjustable proportioning valve in line after the right front brake. Or may
be run a separate line for the front so I can also use a line loc. I just
hate to give up some of the original options, esp. since you-I don't see
them all that much. Any help would be appreciated. aka -57 hippie

Hi Bob and all Tri-Fiver's out there,
I'm about to put my 55 Nomad in storage for the winter and have a
question that I hope someone out there can help me with. What is the BEST
way to keep the battery in top shape? I'm thinking about buying a "Battery

Tender/Charger" ($62.95) from CCI. Have any members had any experience
with
these things? Do they actually do what they say they will do? Any thoughts?

Thanks, Pete Cap

Re your trivia question in the 10-17-00 distribution:

Chevy last used leaf springs on the rear of a passenger car in the 1976
model
year. This was on the full-sized station wagon models only (as the sedans
used
coils). If you consider trucks and MPV's, of course, they are still using
them!
Check out the 2001 Blazer, for example.

While I could be thinking of the wrong "Mel", I'd say Mel Sharpel was the
proprietor of a small diner.

Editor's note. This agrees with my info about Chevy rear springs. This was
a real surprise to me.

Hello Everyone,

I have a few questions. First, remember the days before all these add on
kits when you had to go to a salvage yard and find the different pieces to
put disc brakes and power steering on the tri five's? I would like to know
if anyone can tell me what parts inter change to put power disc brakes on
my 57. The problem I have with the kits is what do you do if you brake down
away from home and need a caliper from a kit you purchased. How would you
explain that to the high school kid behind the Pep Boys counter. Is there a
web site or a book that talks about inter changing parts?

Next, I am planning on buying a compressor for the garage which I will use
to restore the 57. I am afraid I will buy one and then find out it is not
good enough for the jobs I need to do. I plan to sandblast and paint and
cut metal with it. I have seen that run around $400 that I feel with do the
job. Any advice from the experienced? The one's I am looking at are single
stage, 6 HP, and put out at least 11 @ 40 psi and 9 at 90 psi. Is single
stage alright and is the pressure enough.

Bob,
I've read many comments regarding the use of old mid 60's Chevy hubs
and new tapered bearings to upgrade from the original style ball
bearings. According to some of the prices given for the bearings alone
it would cost about $120. Then you need seals, dust caps, and then have
to locate these old hubs and clean them up.

We stock a tapered roller bearing hub kit which includes new inner and
outer bearings, new seals, new dust caps, new hubs with new studs
installed and new hardware. The cost of this kit is $175.
This just seems to be an easier solution, and using all new parts.

We have sold many of these kits and have them on both of our own
original 57 Chevies. They are smoother, the car will handle better and
you can use radial tires. with no problems because radials tend to eat
up the old style ball bearings.

I just think that if there was no such kit out there that we would have
to settle for old hubs to make this conversion. But new is new and just
easier and less work.
What do you all think? Donna

Bob what is the deal with the prices on the cars on you list lately? You
use
to see a wide variety of prices and cars. It used to be we would see cars
running anything from parts cars at cheaper prices to the high dollar cars.

But now it seems that all are there are the $15,000 and up cars. What
happened to all the others, as in the four door cars and parts cars that
were
in the 2500 and up cars. What happened? You have done a great job but
something has sure changed.

Steve Kimball

Editor's note. I just send out the car for sale as I get them. Check the
last cars for sale and see if there are any lower priced cars in it.

Wow! Virtually every vehicle advertised on October 17, 2000 was priced at
$20,000. Out of about 90 cars, none was lower than $18,200.
