My trivia question about the use of rear leaf springs on Chevys was a bad
question. It was
ambiguous at best. I was thinking of full sized cars but I didn't say so.
Chevy made more than
full sized cars and some had rear leaf springs and some did not. Sorry for
the bad question.

I don't know if there is anyone out there who is into 55-56-57 Chevy
hearses,
flower cars, limos, etc, etc, but I spoke to a man named David Roche the
other day and he has one of 3 existing 55 ambulances (only 37 were built by

National Coach Builders). Anyway, he would like to talk to owners of cars
built by, or someone who has information on National Coach Builders. For
those of you who may not know, I learned that this company was contracted
by
GM to take factory stock cars and modify them into limos, ambulances, and
so
forth. Mr. Roche needs a few very hard to find pieces for his car. And
here
is the list:

1) 55/56 Overdrive cable
2) National Coach Builders literature
3) " National " scripts that take the place of the BelAir scripts on the
quarters.
Mr. Roche's # is (508) 786-1875. He would greatly appreciate the help.

Editor's note. He soul contact the "Professional Car Society" at Box
9636, Columbus, Ohio 43209.
Membership is very reasonable and you can run ads in there newsletter.
Great place to find parts for ambulances and hearses.

Bob - there has been quite a bit of talk about the hubs on our 55-57's -
some want to leave them alone, some (like me) feel they should upgrade
to a 61-68 hub.
Just for fun, at the store today, I looked up BCA bearings. The
original 1955 used bearings which today code to B40 inner and B41 outer,
with a National 6985 seal. I about fainted when I saw the price for OEM
type Ball Bearings - B40 inner is $95.00 list, $68.86 stocking dealer,
B41 is $85.65/$62.11. Seal is $16.00/$11.52. For 1956 and 1957, they
enlarged the outer bearing to get better wear, number is B01
$60.67/44.00.
The 61-68 unit uses roller bearings, A6 inner $13.85/10.00, A2 outer
11.83/$8.52 and seal 7934S $17.29/$12.46.
I seriously doubt a foreign bearing company can get close to those
prices for roller conversions to a 55-57 hub, and if you do convert,
what do you do in No Trees, Kansas when you eat a front wheel bearing?
BCA is Federal Mogul, available nationwide and the numbers can be used
at any bearing supplier or auto jobber. Pep Boys, Autozone etc all
should be able to quote, and the hub itself should still be widely
available at any older salvage yard.
Wait until you need to find a 55 rear end on top of Donner Pass on the
morning of July 4th. Availability is high on my priority list.

Bob,

Here's one for the next list:

What s the best way to remove old undercoating from the undersides of a
car?
Will sandblasting remove it or do I have to spend a weeks worth of evenings

heating it with a torch and scraping? Also, has anyone replaced the rear
wheelwell seals with the quarters and wheelwells in place? How
tough of a job is this??

Thanks,

Bob could you please post this to your list. I am trying to find out how I
can get in contact with a gentleman by the name of Gene Smith. He lives in
a small community in LA called Agua Dulce. He has some unbelievable cars

know if he is contactable by email or phone or even the fax, I would be
jumping for joy.

I don't know what the value was when the mail went by train vs air -
however, if a guess is worth anything - 6 cents.

Buy the CCI or Danchuck disc brake caliper brackets and ALL of the other
parts come from 68 thru 72 A bodies. You'll have to fabricate the brake
lines. Complete directions are in old Classic Chevy World magazine Aug 93.

e-mail me and I'll send you a photocopy of the article. glnndrvr @ cs.com.

I did it 2 years ago and it's a pretty straight forward job.

Bob-Wayne S. inquired about using a powerglide from a 6cycl. to a V-8,
either
265/283. I've recently done some research on this as I'm getting one out of
a
6 to put om a 283. I was very surprised at the range of answers I received
on this
question-from "absolutely. it'll bolt right up " to "just get a different
adapter plate" to "they're totally different transmissions!"

Well, after speaking to about six people who I believe to me more
knowledgable than I am I have a definitive answer.
1)The transmission is the same as far as the internal parts go-checked in a

couple of Chevy tech books-same gear ratios
2)The starter mounts differently on the 6--bolts onto the bellhousing
instead
of block as the 8 does.
3)In order to use a P.G. from the 6 to an 8 one must change the converter
cover
(a.k.a. bell housing). From Tom Trainer down in Atlanta who worked for GM
for
many years,
"The 6 housing has a bulge for the mounting of the starter-this

will not fit onto the V8"
So Wayne and other clubbers--I believe that this is correct-I'LL LET YOU
KNOW
IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS! Frank F.-Dover 57 @aol.com

To Charlie Shew, If you're gonna do a total restoration on your car, I
hightly suggest you purchase a 2 Stage compressor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You

can get by with a single stage, but there will be times when you will have

to stop what you are doing & wait for it to fill up with air. Also D.A.'s
use
a lot of air & it is a LOT harder on your compressor to be working almost
constantly while you're working which it will be doing when D.A-ing!
I
know this from experience, as I started out with a single stage & ended up
selling it to buy a 2 stage! They are about double the price, but if you
get
mad at your single stage like I did mine, you will want to sell it & buy a
2
stage! So it is cheaper in the LONG RUN to get the 2-stage right off the
bat, then you won't have to worry about NOT ENOUGH
AIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Richard

Chevy last used leaf springs on the rear of a passenger car in the 1976
model year. This was on the full-sized station wagon models only (as the
sedans
used coils). If you consider trucks and MPV's, of course, they are still
using
them! Check out the 2001 Blazer, for example.

While I could be thinking of the wrong "Mel", I'd say Mel Sharpel was the
proprietor of a small diner.

Editor's note. This agrees with my info about Chevy rear springs. This
was
a real surprise to me.

Here is some 50s trivia for you.
What was the last year Chevy used leaf springs in the rear of their cars?
>>
I believe it was the '57 Richard

Editor's note. Richard, that is what I thought until I checked my
references. According to my references in 1958 Chevy put coil springs in
the rear of some of their cars but not all of them.

BOB >>
Could it be that someone has totally changed the rear suspension???? OR
could
it be that only the very EARLY 58's had them!????? I have never seen a 58

with leaf springs! Richard

Editor's note. I think the new frame for the 58 passenger cars required
coil rear springs but I don't think they were uses on 58 Covrettes.

Donna,
The distributor in my 1955 265 engine is leaking oil up thru the shaft
and
out the vent hole above the gasket flange. I originally thought it was
leaking from the small thin gasket, but replaced that and took a real close

up look when it still leaked. I'm guessing I will have to replace the
whole
distributor unless you or Mario know of a rebuild kit the may help my
problem.
I do not want to buy some old distributor that could have the same
problem.
Do you sell good solid single point 1955 distributors? I have the GM part
number, but can't get to it right now, will let you know as soon as I can
get
