To Charlie Shew, Hello from northern California. I'm a painter and
sandblasting is also part of what I do. Your in for a sticker shock when
you try to enter the world of blasting. It is a give and take world. If you
are really serious, it costs a lot. But if you just want to sneak into
doing a hobby style of blasting. I got by with a 3 hp compressor on 220v
and a sandblaster that looks like a 5 gallon sand bucket. The system was
not a "pressure unit" ( if you know what I mean ) and it worked for me.
Here is a couple of tool outfits that you can ask for their catalogs.

Does anyone have production numbers for the
57 sedan delivery?

All the books I've got do not include it with the figures
for the "150" series cars ( perhaps because I'm told
that the deliveries were titled as TRUCKS?)....

According to a memo dated April 17, 1957 to all Chevrolet Dealers(as
reprinted in the November 95 Classic Chevy World magazine, "As a matter of
expediency, all wheels installed on the Bel Air Series will be painted
silver
so that it will permit you to switch white wall tires and black wall tires
without regard to matching car colors. With the large Bel Air hub caps,
only
a small portion of the wheel shows, which will enhance the beauty of the
Chrome wheel disc. This change is effective immediately, and all Bel Air
Models should have the Silver color wheels by April 25th." signed by R. E.

Hope this helps.

Bob,

I am transplanting a 350 crate engine into my 56 chevy next month and would

like to know if anyone has some information on the clutch and throw out
bearing combination. I plan to use the stock motor mounts and 55-57 V-8
bell
housing since I am only putting in a 250 HP engine. In 1969, I used a 10.5
inch pressure plate and disc for a 68 chevelle. Will the stock throwout
bearing work if I use a non - 55-57 pressure plate / disc or do I have to
use
another throwout bearing? Last time I did this back in 1970 I had a problem

with the throwout bearing setup and don't remember what it was. Any
suggestions?

Thanks,
Eric

In response to Grant Morris' question about where to find the right
convertible-top latch, try Gary Pronesti in Syracuse, New York. He's come
up with some unbelievable NOS stuff for my car. He also knows where to
find
used parts. This guy is the best! Here's the address:

Hi Bob,

In answer to Peter Hall's question:

Gene Smith
33305 Barber Road
Agua Dulce, CA 91350
(805) 268-8536

Gene's company makes parts for 55-57 cars. Anything with his name on it is
the best reproduction part you can buy.

Best,
Don Kent
Northridge, CA

Editor's note. I agree with Don 100 percent. Gene Smith's parts are as
good as they come. If you want the best, this is where you get them.

Hi Bob,
I would like to install seat belts in our '56 210 2 door sedan. Six
pairs/sets to be exact. Where should the bolts be mounted? I believe that
another member "Jim" was asking about mounting seat belts in his '55 and
you
mentioned that "Classic Chevy World" discusses this. Well, unfortunately,
I
do not receive it. Any help in this area would be appreciated.

RE: Disc brakes
My 56 210 has been a daily driver for years. Any weekend project I
attempt, I try to be sure it is road ready by Monday. One of my projects
was front disc brakes. I had already swapped hubs to take advantage of
smoother roller bearings, but I wanted better stopping ability. I bought
disc brake brackets from CCI. I ordered rotors, bearings, seals and rubber
lines from Kragen on-line and fabricated new steel lines for the new dual
master cylinder and proportioning valve. I rebuilt calipers from a 77
Cutlass. (total cost about $350)

The point of this rambling is that yes I improved my stopping ability
dramatically..BUT..
I lost about a third of the turning radius when the front end was
re-aligned. The brackets push the spindles out, thereby forcing a
re-alignment and lost turning.
Would I do it again? Yes, but using spindles WITH disc mounts.

Hello Everyone,

I really appreciate everyone who takes the time to respond to the questions
on this list I print most of these off which I plan to refer back to in the
future. My question today is I want to lower the back of my 57. I know
lowering blocks are much cheaper then leaf springs but I think you would
just loose some handling with the blocks. Any opinions?

Bob,

I am unable to "finish" rolling up the driver's window of my '57 2dr.hdtp.
I counted the teeth in the mechanism and it is correct. It doesn't bind on
anything but lacks about 1" going to the top of the track. I can pull it
up to the top. One friend suggested drilling two new holes above the two
for the top "slider" bracket thus letting the arm go up the required
distance.

Come on, there has to be a better way!!

The info provided by Frank Dover on the subject of Powerglides in the
10/25/2000
distribution of the list squares with my recollections - as long as one is
speaking about the Powerglides originally installed on the cars from
'55-'57.

It should be noted that Chevy changed from using a cast iron case on
Powerglides
to a die-cast aluminum case in the early '60's. I seem to remember that the
change took place on the small-block V8 a bit earlier than on the six, but
I may
be wrong on this. I do know that my original '62 Biscayne with the 235
still had
a cast iron case Powerglide. One must always keep in mind that a lot of
things
can get changed in the 40+ years these cars have been around, and what
you're
looking at may well not be the way it left the assembly plant - even if it
is
now coated with 3/4-inch of grease!

In answer to Joan's question about other car lists. There are
others. I bought a '67 Oldsmobile 98 Holiday Sedan (4-dr hardtop) at
end of May with 41,300 original miles. Since I'm a Chevy man (3-55's),
this Olds was new to my experience. It's a great daily driver even
though it's 2 feet 4 inches longer, 5 inches wider, and almost 2000 lbs
heavier than the '55 and gets lousy gas mileage. I belong to an Olds
list now that is a little different than this Chevy list. I'm on,
what's called the digest version, which is like the Chevy list in that I
get an e-mail with a long list of questions/answers, but that list is a
compilation of real time e-mails that members send back and forth. On
the Olds list, there has been mention of a Toronado list and a 442
list. Probably, if you search around you'd find a list for other makes
also. I've learned a lot about my Olds and "met" some nice people just
as I have on this list.

The early Vettes used leaf springs up till 1962 . The springs were mutch
like the 55-57 passanger car springs. The Vette rear end looks like a 55-57
rear end with the spring perches welded on at a different angle ( up to 62
) The 58s full size body chev had coil springs but a few were built with
air ride suspension . I do have a new overdrive cable for a 55
Chev . BOB willisb@kos.net

Hi Bob,
I just saw a service guide article in the October issue of "Vette Vues"
magazine. It's a reprint of a 1957 Chevrolet service bulletin. I thought
you might be interested in it. Also, a friend of mine has been writing a
series of articles on the "Route 66" TV show in the same magazine, if
you're into that show. Wild Bill
