Anyone had any experience with temp. gauge on 57. Sending unit is ok and
gauge is ok and as best I can test the wiring is fine. Any ideas?
Gary White
gwhitrun@mindspring.com

Editor's note. This might work. Take the sending unit out and also the
gauge. Connect the sending unit to the gauge and a battery. Put the
sending unit in water on a burner. Put a thermometer in the water and
turn on the burner. You should see the gauge go up as the water temp
rises.

Bob

A friend of mine past this to me and I would like to be put on the members
list. We are in the process of buying a 1955 210 4 door wagon. My wife
and
I have been in the market for a few months and we think we have found the
car. We have already driven it and will be getting it inspected tomorrow
(11/1). If all checks out mechanically we are going to make an offer. If
it doesn't check out we will continue the search.

Are planning on doing some mechanical and cosmetic work. My wife is
planning on using the car around town as a driver. She is jazzed about the
project.

My first question is, the wagon needs all new interior (headliner, seat
covers, door panels and carpet). Is Danchuk a good place to buy parts
from?? A number of my surf buddies who have Nomads have mentioned Danchuk
a
number of time.

for at Cars 1 in Fullerton.

Thanks Bob and your wife too, for the open house. My wife, baby boy and I
enjoyed meeting you and the others who attended. If those of you who
attended would like to help my memory with regard to names and faces, I'd
be
happy to receive any emails with your name, city, and what vehicle you were
driving, along with anything else you want to say. For those of you far
flung list members, as the long haul recipient, I can understand not
getting
there, but you missed a nice get together with some very friendly people.

Bob: Sorry we weren't able to make your party; would love to meet you
and
give you a pat on the back for a job well done. We enjoy your list and
know
first hand what it takes to do something like this. Wanda and I have been

involved in 55-57 Chevrolet cars since my first 55 2 door hardtop at the
young age of 15! We started a local Chevrolet club, Rose City Classics, in

1981 and held our first mini-national covention in Portland in 1985.
There
have been many conventions and activities since. Even though it is a lot
of
hard work, I think you will agree, that it is definitely worth all the
effort. It is so enjoyable meeting new people, building friendships and
sharing information and knowledge about the Classics.

Hope everyone who was able to attend had a terrific time! Keep up the good

work.

Jeff, the production numbers I have for the '57 Sedan
Delivery are 7273. This makes them far more rare than
a convertible (47,562) and a good runner-up to a Nomad
(6534). I don't know that they were titled as trucks,
I'm certainly not an expert, just a know-it-all :-)
And, to anyone looking for one, I do have a '57 Sedan
Delivery for sale. Thanks again, Bob, for this
wonderful list, and hope the "Get Together" went well.

Anyone remember Gus from Popular Science (or was it Popular Mechanic)?
This is the style of
stories you could read.

Mark and Sharon lived in Bottineau North Dakota. Mark was a driver for the
Bottineau
Ambulance Service on Ohmer street and Sharon worked as a nurse at the
Bottineau Hospital
which was next door.

It was the last week of November and Mark had just got his 55 Bel Air back
from D & B Body
Works on 11th street where he had a new base/clear coat paint job. It was
past 6 PM when
Mark got home and he turned on the TV. When he heard the weather forecast
he was worried.
The forecast was for record lows that night and several inches of snow. It
was forecasted to be
20 BELOW zero that night. Mark very much wanted to take his newly painted
Bel Air to work
the next morning and show his fellow workers at the Bottineau Ambulance
Service his car.

However if the temperature got to 20 below zero that night, he knew it
would be very hard to
start his car as the motor was just overhauled and was very tight. Mark's
car was parked in his
garage that was not heated and it did not have any electricity The garage
was 1000 feet from his
house. Mark's car had a block heater with the standard 110 volts 3 prong
plug. Mark wanted to
make an extension cord and run it from his house to the block heater on his
car. He would need
an extension cord that was 1000 feet long to reach the car from a plugin on
the outside of his
house. He searched his house and found 1 of wire that was 1005 feet long.
There was 3 prongs
on his block heater that had 3 wires running into the plug from the block
heater and 3 slots on the
plugin in the side of his house that had 3 wires running into it. It was
now past 8 PM and any
place that sold wire has long since closed. Mark told Sharon that there
was not a way he could
make his block heater work as long as his car was in the garage. He just
did not have enough
wire for an extension cord.

Sharon said to not worry, she would take care of this problem and his motor
would be warm
when he went out to start it the next morning. 15 minutes later Sharon
came back to the house
and said it was all taken care of. Mark did not believe her but in the
interest of family peace, he
did not pursue the subject any more.

The next morning on the radio, Mark heard that it had been 28 degrees below
zero that night. He
was sure his Bel Air would not start. He told Sharon that they would just
go to work in her car
and wait for warmer weather to take the Bel Air to work. Sharon said "The
block heater was on
all night. Your Bel Air should start". Mark went to his garage and raised
the hood and felt the
motor. It was warm. His Bel Air started the first try. Mark could not
believe it. The block
heater had kept his motor warm all night. The car had not been moved from
the garage and
because of the bad weather neither Mark or Sharon had left home that night
and no one had came
to see them. The one 1005 feet wire was the only wire at Mark and Sharon's
house.

COULD THIS STORY POSSIBLY BE TRUE? IF YES, HOW DID SHARON MAKE THE
BLOCK HEATER WORK?

Bob, I have a question for you and fellow list members, my 55 Chevy # says
it
is a Del Ray Sport Coupe, but it has posts. I was told by a person that it

could not be a coupe, because it has post and the numbers were switches?
But
someone else told me that back in early fifties a coupe could have had
post.
Would you or any list members know.

Bob, how was your party, I would have love to come and meet you and other
list member, but living in New York it would have been some ride.

Bob,

Last week was rather eventful. What started out to be a simple change out
of
the rear wheel cylinders, brake shoes, and a master cylinder turned out to
be
all of the above plus the replacement of two rear wheel bearings.

When I returned yet the second time to my local parts place, A @ B Auto
Parts, to have the bearing set pressed onto the axle, the guy behind the
counter told me that the bearing was a bad design from the beginning.

I have also heard old wives tales about the early 265 V-8s engines breaking

axles in the 3.38 rear end. Is there any truth in any of this or can
someone
tell me more?

To top it all off, I had a leaking cross line on the brake hydraulic system

which I discovered only after I had the brakes bled.

Sometimes driving these things develops character.

6 cylinder and V8, 55-57 powerglides are not a direct interchange. The
spacers and the bellhousings are not interchangable. The starters have
different cones; 6 is a 2 bolt and V8 is a 3 bolt. The 6 and 8 flex
plates
are different; but the torque convertors are the same. The bell housing can

be changed to make them fit one or the other; but you need to be
knowledgeable in the mechanics of the application.

CJ,
In response your inquiry about production on the 57 chevy sedan
delivery: 7,273 were made. There were 8,811 made in 55, and 7,441 made
in 56. They were a low production model, which makes them very scarce
today.
We have a 55 sedan delivery for sale in anyone is interested for $2500.

If you decide to do your own work, I use a Harbor Freight pressurized
portable sand blaster. It holds 40 lbs of blasting material, was
inexpensive to purchase and works very well for me.
Beach or masonry sand products do not work well in this equipment. Do
not use silica sand products. Silica sand and the dust created by using
it, are extremely dangerous to your health and best left to professionals.

When blasting sheet metal parts, optimal would be to use baking soda.
Walnut shell, plastic bead, or glass bead, are also available and produce
less generated heat when used than harder blasting materials. To much
generated heat can quickly warp a sheet metal panel creating another set
of problems. As Bruce mentioned, it requires a lot of air plus you'll
need a place that you can not only make a mess, but a place that is easy
to clean up afterwards.

I used 2" lowering blocks on the rear. The handling didn't change but
the ride did. You feel the road more. Plus, I didn't cut down the
rubber bumpers, so I bottomed out a lot on big bumps. Now the bumpers
are smashed down on their own. I was surprised at the ride change.
The front was lowered 1 inch with heated coils. Didn't seem to change
anything with that change. What it did was allow me to align the front
end once again. It was either lower the front, which I wanted to do
anyway, use offset A-arms, or bend the front cross member back into the
correct position. This front cross member tends to sag with age which
is the reason the offset A-arms were made. Lowering the front changes
the geometry to allow the alignment. The sagging cross member affects
both caster and camber.
