Regarding the engine heater being hooked to a pipe or rod. You're right.
It's also extremely dangerous! My father made a "worm finder" in much the
same manner. He hooked the hot side of a 110 volt circuit to one steel rod
and the ground side to another steel rod. He installed a porcelain socket
in the hot side of the circuit and put in a light bulb. This was his
"safety" device! If the bulb was lit, you didn't get close to the rods!
After pushing both rods into the ground, about 5' apart, you plugged it in
for about 5-10 minutes. That caused the worms to come to the surface. You
then unplugged the thing, picked up the worms, and went fishing! As I said,
this is extremely dangerous and is definitely not intended as something
anybody should try, just an anecdote from the past. Wild Bill

Hi Bob,
Yes, they still sell soft crabs! The problem is that the entire
Chesapeake Bay crab fishery has gone downhill dramatically over the last
decade. This year's harvest was about 1/2 of last year's. Most of the blame
for this is over fishing and the taking of pregnant females. I believe
there will soon have to be a moratorium on crabbing, much like the one they
imposed on rockfish, (striped bass), several years ago. They were severely
depleted. Rock are back now and increasing in numbers every year. A couple
of years without Chesapeake Bay crabs would be a small price to pay to see
them come back to their old numbers.
It would be nice if you did get back to the East Coast for a visit. Keep
us "right coasters" informed if you decide to make the trip. I know most of
us would have you very busy looking at cars! Thanks again for the list!

Hi Bob,

Yes!!! The soft crab is still very, very popular in Maryland. The
best crabs anywhere come from the Chesapeake Bay.

I'm sure you remember back yard crab feasts, having spent time in
Annapolis. I think it would be a great idea to arrange an East Coast visit
for all of your
fans in this time zone.

Crabs, Old Bay seasoning and cold beer. "The land of pleasant living"
The only place you can get a real crab cake is Maryland.
In fact, there is a local pub near me that has "Baltimore's Best"
crab cakes. (By vote.)
They ship them all over the country. Several Movie and Stage actors
order them from Angelina's. A few years ago an actress doing a Broadway
play in NY sent
a limo to Baltimore to pick up a large order of crab cakes to take back to
NY for
a party.

It would be great to have some kind of get together here in the East.

Rich, Baltimore, MD

Editor's note. Next summer I will see if I can work in a visit to the east
coast.
I made many trips from Annapolis to Baltimore to a place that sold crab
cakes. I forgot the name
of the place. They would just melt in your mouth. I had forgot about Old
Bay seasoning. Great stuff.

Since I have not been back to Annapolis since I left in 1961, it might be a
lot of fun to see what it looks like now. I have been told that the "Old
Baltimore" waterfront area has been torn down and rebuilt with nice hotels.

Hi Bob

It's been awhile since I have written in, however I do following you
listing
faithfully.

Last New Year's Eve we brought home a '55 Nomad "treasure" which had been
sitting in an open field for at least five years. Like a majority of
project
cars, it has been placed on the back burner as a more important priority
took
it's place - the birth of our first grandchild! Now that the baby is
finally
here, we can again turn our attention to the Nomad. We have been fortunate

to find the major parts (motor, rear end, front clip, tailgate, etc.) to
begin the frame off restoration.

We wondered if anyone on your list can tell us if there is a schematic of
the
interior trim piece available for the '55 Nomad, and if so where to g find
it. I tried contacting the closest Nomad Club to our hometown, only to
find
they no longer meet on a regular bases. Any help in would be greatly
appreciated.

Bob,
People have asked before about the cost of cars sold at auction. One
of the premiere auctions will be held in Scottsdale in January. It will
even be on Speedvision. It's the Barrett Jackson Car Auction. There is
even a fashion show, pavilion cars (cars you negotiate for, they don't
even get auctioned) and automobilia for sale too. For 4 days they will
auction over 800 cars. It is a bit high brow for my taste but I thought
I'd let the readers know the pricing for the car auction.

First to place a car up for auction you pay an auction fee based on the
day and time your car is scheduled for auction. This ranges from $400 to
$1,000 that you must pay up front. Those are for reserve cars, where
there is a minimum acceptable price. If you are willing to sell the car
regardless of price the entry fees are $250 - $1000.

As a seller you pay a commission on the sale if you complete one. For
reserve cars the commission is 10% for prices under 100,000 and ONLY 8%
for those at 100,001+. Non reserved car sell at 8% and 6% at teh same
price breaks.

For the seller's entry fee you also get entrance to the show and invites
to other events - like a fashion show.

If you're buying, the bidder's fee is $175. Any successful bidder pays a
premium of 8% to the auction house. Plus sales tax if you're not a
dealer!

It's quite a racket but of course putting on this event isn't exactly
free either. The auction is usually on Speedvision on Friday the 19th of
January and also on Saturday. Check your local listings!

PS. Last year a 56 Chevy convertible went for a world record $86,920.

Buyer Seller
Purchase price $80,000 Price 80,000
est tax 8.65% 6,920 Less commission
8,000
Buyer's premium 6,400 Entry fee 1,000 - 250

Bidder's fee 175

Total cost $93,495 Total return 71,000 - 71,750

Bob,
Had not noticed this topic come up yet, and was quite surprised. So I
thought I'd write and remind everyone to make sure they get out of the
garage and VOTE next week.

Especially pay attention to those candidates that support our automobile
restoration hobby and aren't out to crush our parts cars or impose
additional legislative restrictions on our hobby. There are certain
candidates out there that look at our fine tri-fives as nothing more than
polluting relics of the past that only belong in museums. ;-)

Although the following would work to heat the engine I DO NOT recommend
that anyone use it. It is in violation of the Nat. Elect. Code and is
very dangerous.

1. Connect one end of the 1006 foot (insulated) wire to the hot side of
an outlet in the house, with the power off
2. Connect the other end to one prong of the heater plug
3. Either use a buried metal water pipe or a driven ground rod to
connect to the other prong of the heater plug, the 3rd prong (the round
or U shaped one) is not needed for conductivity
4. Turn the power on >>

Hi Bob,

Ah, My question here is:

1* By doing this wouldn't you potentially have a car that would
electrocute
someone if they touched it,

Editor's note. Yes if the block heater was defective.
BOB

And

2* How would you insulate the gasoline from being electrically charged &
blowing up when turning the power on ??????

Forgive me If I missed something here ;o) ............
James
.....
Chevy156@aol.com

Editor's note. I am not an expert on this subject so if this information
is not correct, someone
please send in correct information.

The only way you can be hurt by electricity is to have it travel through
your body to the earth.
That is you could put your finger in the "live" slot of a home plug in and
as long as you were
standing on something that did not conduct electricity, such as a rubber
mat, you would not be
harmed. This is because the electricity is not "flowing" through your body
to the earth.
We are talking theory here. Please do NOT put your finger in a plug in
slot.

Lets use a electric motor as an example of something this is run by
electricity. The same principal
will apply to all things run by electricity. If you run one insulated wire
from a plug in to the motor
and run an insulated wire from the motor to a good connection in the earth,
the motor would run.
If the motor did NOT have a defect, you could not be hurt by electricity
even if you put you hand
on the motor and touched a copper water pipe. However all building codes
would not permit this
type of connection for a very good reason. If the motor WAS defective and
the "live" wire
touched the case of the motor and you touched the case of the motor and
anything that conducted
electricity to the earth such as a water pipe, you could be hurt or killed.
To prevent this from
happening, building codes require a third wire be connected to the motor
case. This wire is
connected to the earth by the way of the third slot in the plug in, the
round one. If the motor IS
defective and voltage is sent to the case of the motor, a fuse is blown
immediately shutting off
power to the motor. Also WITHOUT this third grounding wire, if the motor
was defective it could
cause a spark if something came in contact with it's case and start a
fire.

Building code are somewhat like seat belts. You are a lot safer if you use
them than if you don't.

Block heaters are used in many Northern states. If they are working
correctly, I don't see how they could charge the gas. On a block heater
that is working correctly, electricity never touches the car.

Somebody please let us know it this info is not correct.

correct procedure for securing the spare tire in a '56 Wagon. There is a

Hi Bob-
Following up on Louis' post about acids in the oil...that's why it always
says to change your oil say after 3000 miles or 3 MONTHS. Even if you
don't
drive it much and think you've got pretty clean oil, those acids have been
formed and are lurking in there eating away at your parts. So change that
oil.

Editor's note. Thanks for the kind offer. I have a bunch of frequent
flyer miles I have to use so perhaps I could meet some of you on the East
Coast sometime next summer. When I was working for my uncle (Sam) at
Annapolis many years ago, I waded through enough snow to last me a
lifetime. However I loved the crab cakes there. Anyone in that area know
if the soft shell crabs are still sold. I can taste them now even after
all of these years.

Bob,

I am going through the same issue at Chevytalk.com, although my members
haven't offered to buy me a plane ticket. ( I'm impressed). We are thinking
of meeting at the GM nationals at Carlisle ,Pa June29 - July1 2001. I
think it would be a fantastic idea if we combined our membership and
treated
this as a joint National Meet! I believe a lot of our members belong to
both
your mail list as well as my Forums.

I will be posting more information on Chevytalk.com in the next few weeks.
If we register 25 cars the members will receive a discount, we even get a
20
x 20 tent as a base of operation. The event will be covered by national
magazines as well. One of my members knows the promoters and I think I may
be able to pull off a special Tri-Five sub event. Sounds kinda cool uh? See
what your members think?

Best Wishes,

Do You Have A Light?

*******************

Two young guys were at a party in the woods when all of a sudden there was
a
downpour of thunder and rain. The two ran for about 10 minutes in the
pouring rain, finally reaching their car just as the rain let up. They
jumped in the car, started it up and headed down the road, laughing and, of

course, still drinking one beer after the other.

All of a sudden an old man's face appeared in the passenger window and
tapped lightly on the window! The passenger screamed out, "Eeeeekkk! Look

at my window!!! There's an old guy's face there!" (Was this a ghost?) The

old man kept knocking, so the driver said, "Well open the window a little
and ask him what he wants!" So the passenger rolled his window down part
way
and said, scared out of his wits, "What do you want?"

The old man softly replied, "You have any tobacco?" The passenger,
terrified,
looked at the driver and said, "He wants tobacco!" "Well, offer him a
cigarette! HURRY!!" the driver replies. So the passenger fumbles around
with the pack and hands the old man a cigarette, rolling up the window in
terror and yells, "Step on it!".

Now going about 80 miles an hour, they calm down and they start laughing
again. The passenger says, "What did you think of that?" The driver says,
"I
don't know. How could that be? I am going pretty fast?"

All of a sudden, AGAIN there is a knock on the window and the old man is
looking in the window.

"Aaaaaaaaaaaaaa! There he is again!", the passenger yells.

"Well, see what he wants now!" yells back the driver.

The passenger rolls down the window a little ways and shakily says "Yes?"

"Do you have a light?" the old man quietly asks. The passenger throws a
lighter out the window at him, rolls up the window and again yells, "STEP
ON
IT!"

They are now going about 100 miles an hour, trying to forget what they had
just seen and heard. Suddenly, again there is more knocking! "HE'S BACK!"

He rolls down the window and screams out, "WHAT DO YOU WANT?" in stark
fear.

The old man gently replies, "You want some help getting out of the mud?"
