I just wanted to thank you for your wonderful list. I have learned so much
about my car from your
list in the last year. You have a very knowledgeable group of people on
the list that will share
their knowledge of TriFives. I love my 55 Bel Air and I plan to take it to
the next Pomona Swap
meet. If you are their, please stop by and say hello. I would like to
meet you.

Bob, you have made my day. I am 65 years old and I read every GUS article
in Popular Science
when I was a teenager. I always tried to solve the problem before I read
how Gus solved it.

I loved your Gus type story in a recent e-mail. I hope you will give us
old guys more of them.

I used to live in Bottineau North Dakota and the places you mentioned in
the Gus article are real
places. How did you know? Did you ever live there?

Gene Lester

Editor's note. I was in Bottineau one day several years ago. Here is
another Gus type story for
you.

Joe was a truck driver that had a small trucking business in Joplin
Missouri. One day Joe got a
call to deliver some lead from Joplin Missouri to Riverside California.
Joe did not like long trips
but he needed the money to pay his next truck payment. The bed of Joe's
truck was completely
enclosed. Joe picked up the lead but was surprised to find it did not take
up much space in Joe's
truck. However with the small amount of lead Joe had, his truck was at the
maximum weight he
could legally carry on the highway. Joe did not plan to leave for
Riverside California for a few
days. The day before he left, he got a call from someone wanting Joe to
transport some birds
from Joplin to Riverside. They were willing to pay a premium if Joe left
the next day for
Riverside. The charge for transporting the lead and the birds would more
than make Joe's truck
payment.

Joe decided to take the birds as he had plenty of room in his truck. He put
a vent in the truck bed to
bring in air for the birds and put a car horn in the bed of his truck with
a switch in the cab. Joe
knew he was overweight and he would get fined if he was caught overweight
at the many weight
stations on his way to Riverside. However Joe had a plan.

Just before he pulled on the scales at the weight station Joe would honk
the horn in his truck bed.
This would cause all of the birds to fly around in his truck bed for the
time it took him to get
through weight station.

Will Joe's plan work? Will he be within the legal weight limit at the
scales?

<< Hi Dino,

Your Not alone with this problem. This happens more frequently with cars
using Radial Tires than cars using Bias Ply Tires. I've experienced the
same
problem on my 56 on one of my rear rims. I solved the problem by putting
drops of Silicone near the tabs of the rim that hold the hub cap onto the
rim.
When the silicone dries it will hold the hub cap in place nicely.
Don't get wild & add to much silicone all around the rim because your
going

to want to take that hub cap off one day :o)

I recommend you use Clear Kitchen & Bathroom Silicone. It's Moisture &
Mildew resistant & seems to secure the cap the best

I hope this helps some ..... James ..... Chevy156@aol.com

Good Morning
I have a 55 BelAir that requires new springs around. I am replacing the
original 265 cid w/3speed-overdrive with a create 350 HO 4speed or 5 speed
(not yet determined), adding A/C, larger Radiator and electric fan etc,

Question: I want to lower only the front end about one inch and thought
about installing new 1" drop coil springs already available and designed
to accomplish this task . But considering what I assume will be a
increase
weight of the new motor/trans and accessories over the old motor/trans,
would I wind up with a 1" drop using new stock height coils.

What I don't want to do is install 1" drop coils and than have the weight
of
the new motor etc pull it down even closer to the ground.

Appreciate any and all help.

Hi everyone. Bob just made my day by this list appearing this morning. My
57 coupe finally made the body shop 3 weeks ago and boy , this 65 year old
guy is getting excited!!! It will be one of the best restos that I have
done. A lot of $$$$$, but well worth it. I wanted to tell everyone that I
will be offering my 283 and powerglide for sale within about 3 months. It
is a nice running engine and the glide works well. It is a 2 barrel engine
and a correct 283 for 57s. Also I will have a power steering unit complete
with generator and all steering components.Works very good, but needs some
seals. The steering unit will bring $300 or more on Ebay, so this is what
I will take for it. The engine and trans, I don't know. Will talk to
someone that s interested. Bob, don't ever get rid of this list. It sure
is great to read every ones articles. Roger in central Iowa

Don't forget to clean the rims & hubcaps w/ some degreaser first.
Otherwise,
the silicone won't stick.

I finally got a chance to do a little work on my project 56 belair.

Since it is up on jacks I was able inspect the underside pretty thoroughly
and found many interesting things.......

Anyway. The rear end is from a 59 and has a 3:08 ratio. (run by a 235
/powerglide) I am not sure if the previous owner/s just swapped out the
guts or changed the whole shebang. I went to inspect the rear brakes to
find that I might as well redo the brakes as I either have a leaky wheel
cylinder or a leaky axle seal. My question is .... Are the brake shoes,
wheel cylinders, and axle bearings and seals the same in a 59 as in a 56 or
am I going to have to disassemble the whole mess and match parts at my
local
brake supply and bearing stores?

Question 2 .... what comments do y'all have re: the low ratio and 235/pg
combo. My gut feeling is that it may not be quick out of the hole but
should do well on the freeway. I'm wondering about in town performance.

This fellow finally buys his dream vette (fill in the year here) and
proceeds to take it out on a shake down cruise.
He gets up to about 80 mph when he sees the red lights in his rear view
mirror.
With gleeful delight he decides to floor it.
Finally at about 120 his conscience gets the better of him and he pulls
over
to accept his fate.
The cop was rather upset and said he was tired of pulling over middle aged
men in their classics wishing they were in their twenties again.
He also was nearing the end of his shift and tells the fellow " look .... I
really don't want to have to write this thing up and spend an extra hour on
paperwork and haul you off down town so I'll tell you what. Since all you
guys have an excuse, If you can come up with a story I've never heard I'll
let you go."
The fellow doesn't even hesitate and says... "well you see officer, my
wife ran off with a highway patrol officer last month and took everything
except my vette. The reason I was speeding is because....... I thought
you
were trying to bring her back ;~)
The officer immediately let him go.

Bob,
I would like to throw out a question to the members regarding
drivetrains.
My original plan was to go with a 'crate 350' and TH350 tranny. But,
after
attending the GoodGuy's show in Northern California, it seems like the
popular transmission is the 700R4. If anyone can give me the 'pros &
cons'
between the TH350 & 700r4. I'm curious as to the costs, a computer needed,

etc. The engine would probably be not fuel injected.
Thanks,
Mel

Bob,

Got a question for all the tri five people on the
list:
I'm streetrodding a 55 4 door sedan and she's getting
more beautiful every day. I have a deluxe heater with
a leaking core and want to replace it. Is there an
easy way to get the core out of the heater? Or do I
have to deassemble the heater as a whole? Could
anybody give me some good advise how to do this or
where I can find manual?

Thanx, I am reading your list every time with great
pleasure

The other day, a new list member mentioned having a problem with '55 Belair
wheelcovers that tended to rotate with respect to the wheel. This rotation
had
damaged one of his valve stems already. He asked if there is anything that
can
be done - short of building up the height of the small "bumps" on the
inside the
wheels bead flanges.

I haven't actually had this problem myself, but I have experienced wheel
disk
rotation on some other cars I've owned. Although not original, one thing
you
might want to consider is the use of some alternate rubber valve stems. The
original '55 Chevy 15-inch wheels had a valve stem hole that is about
1/2-inch
diameter. There is actually a fair degree of difference between different
valve
stem suppliers of this diameter rubber stem. Some are stiffer (and will
thus
resist wheelcover rotation) better than others. Trouble is, the auto parts
stores in your area probably have only one kind. You may have better luck
if you
try a farm supply store like TSC or some place that services industrial
equipment such as fork lifts, etc.

Please also keep in mind that multi-piece metal valve stems are also
available.
These were more popular for use on truck tubeless tires back in the '50's
and
'60's, but can still be found today. They can be used on pass car wheels
too. I
guaranty that these will prevent rotation of any wheeldisk! If you want to
make
them look stock, the outer portion of an old rubber valve stem can be cut
out
and slipped over the metal stem. Placing a valve cap on the threads of the
metal
stem will then secure everything in place.

Hope this is of some help.

Jerry Koski has a note in the list of 11-10-2000 mentioning that the
powerglide
in a '52 Chevy he has always "...takes off in Hi gear". He asks if this is
normal. The answer is that, yes, it is normal assuming the car is other
than a
unit built real late in '52. The Powerglide as introduced in the '50 model
year,
as built in '51 and early '52 worked this way. Low (1st) gear could be
obtained
only via manual selection with the column-mounted lever. Late in the '52
model
year, the 'Glide was re-designed to incorporate a more complex valve body.
This
provided 1st gear starts and downshifts under full throttle at less than
about
55mph.

One of these later transmissions with the improved valve body can be
retrofitted
in a '52 if really wanted, but I'd opt to keep it original (and shift it
manually when desired) if the trans otherwise works properly.

Interestingly, this 'Glide w/o the valve body was re-introduced as the low
cost
optional "Torquedrive" for the 4 (and I believe 6 cyl.) Chevy Nova models
in the
'60's. I know it was still marketed in 1970 as I had one years ago.

Hope this helps.
