Hi everyone. Bob, just a note to say I still read your list even though I
haven't contributed to the posts lately. I have a question that I'm sure
is
a common classic problem. In my 64 SS Impala, I think the springs are
shot,
or shocks? Whenever anyone who isn't a beanpole sits on either passenger
or
driver side, the car leans or sags to that side way too much. How can I
have things tightened up or prevent this from happening, short of replacing

the above mentioned things. How much do springs, shocks run. I heard
around $400.00. Has anyone had this problem? Thanks. Keep up the great
work Bob! What's the latest on your Chevy/insurance problems?

Lisa in California

Editor's note. I finally got the check from the insurance company.

Hi Bob and everyone
Usually I have questions about my 55 BelAir, but I also have a 58 Apache
1/2
ton that I am rebuilding the front end on.
I am looking for inner and outer front wheel bearings, but I want to
convert
to roller.
Aftermarket houses like Golden State and Truck Shop have them however might
be able to trim a few $'s if someone has the manufacturer name and the part
number of the roller bearing sets? I seem to remember someone talking
about having this information not to long ago, but cannot find the
information.
As usual, thanks to everyone for your help

Reference Han's question.

You will need to disassemble the heater core box only, this is where the
core
and
valve are.

While in there check out the heater control valve. I have new heater cores

for $98.00 exch; rebuilt heater control valves for $50.00 exch; I no
longer
sell the
repro heater valves because they do not last. Plus if you need heater
paint,
cables,
gasket kit, levers, knobs, etc. I have it in stock.
1. You will need to drain the coolant system.
2. On the firewall under the battery you will find the two heater hoses,
disconnect these. At this time tape off the heater nipples. This will keep
coolant off the carpet/
floorboard.
3. also in this area you will see two studs with nuts and washers remove
the
nuts and washers.
4.Next go inside under the dash you will see two heater cables that go to
the
heater box. Disconnect the cable that operates the defrost flap. Then
disconnect the heater valve cable from the heater control on the dash.
5. On the heater box above the transmission tunnel you will need to remove
the large phillips screw. Several times over the years I have seen this
screw coming from the outside.
6. On the right (passenger) side of the box you will see a rubber band type

seal, roll this seal back away from the box.
7.The heater box is ready to be removed. Lay an old towel down on the
floorboard to protect the carpet. Sometimes the defrost seal is melted to
the
box, you may have to give it a tug.
8. Once out and on the bench you will see phillips screws where the two
box
halves come together and on each side. Remove these and separate to access
the core and valve. Make sure to replace the short 5/8 piece of hose
between
the core and valve when you reassemble. If the heater has not been serviced

for sometime you may find some treasures in side the box assembly. Over the

years I have found Silver coins,
jewelery, trinkets, and once an NOS condom, ( if only these Chevys could
talk).
At this time you may want to check out the heater motor. I do have these in

stock.
Tools needed ; Phillips screwdriver, Water pump pliers, 7/16 deep socket or

wrench,
Regular screwdriver.

Bob:

First, I hope you and your family have a very happy Thanksgiving.

I am writing to inquire if anyone is interested in a 56 Chevy frame
(sedan/coupe type). This frame is two piece, completely stripped and
powder coated. I ran across it in Mississippi and the owner said he would
sell for $900. I am placing this as a question for anyone interested. I
get nothing out of this, but the frame is beautiful and thought someone
should have it. I offered to post to see if any interest. No horn damage
and looks very straight. I did see a slightly bent shift bracket but very
minor. I would bet that this happened when the body was separated from the
frame. The number is visible on the frame (I did not record) and I would be
glad to research it further for anyone interested. I will be back in
Jackson probably the week of Nov. 27. Please contact me direct. Thanks.

SEMA LEGISLATIVE ALERT

CARB May Look to Eliminate Emissions Testing Exemption for Older Cars

In early 2001, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) is likely to
pursue legislation in the California State legislature to repeal the
state's
current rolling emissions test exemption for vehicles 30 years old and
older. If CARB is successful, emissions tests could be required of
vehicles
as far back as the 1966 model year. In other words, CARB is working to
ensure that older vehicles are NEVER excused from the SMOG Check program.

We Urge You to Contact Your State Legislators to Support
the Current Emissions Exemption

· Existing law in California exempts all pre 1974 vehicles from emissions
testing until 2003. After 2003, vehicles 30 years old and older will be
exempt from emissions testing.

· California's emissions testing exemption recognizes the minimal impact
of
antique and classic vehicles on vehicle emissions and air quality.

· Vehicles 30 years old and older constitute a small portion of the
overall
vehicle population and are a poor source from which to look for emissions
reduction.

· Antique and classic vehicles are overwhelmingly well-maintained and
infrequently driven and have little impact on California's pollution
problems.

· Expanding emissions testing could unfairly force 1960s-era vehicles -
vehicles not originally equipped with pollution control systems - to
undergo
emissions tests.

· Expanding emissions testing to take in older vehicles could lead to
increasing the pool of vehicles eligible for scrappage, including 1960s-era
cars.

Contact your state legislators to oppose repealing California's emissions
exemption for older vehicles. To find out who your legislators are,
contact
the California Senate general information line at 916/445-4311 and the
California Assembly information line at 916-445-2323. This information can

Hi Bob,
Yes, Joe will make the weight at the scales. Every time he blows the
horn, the birds take flight in the trailer. If the birds are flying they
won't add to his Gross Vehicle Weight, or GVW! Good one! Thanks again for

About Joe's plan to lighten his load by getting the birds to fly around
will
not work because the weight of their bodies will now be supported by the
air
under them, in turn exerting the same weight on the floor of the truck bed
as
just sitting on top of it.

Hi everyone,

I have one question. Does anyone know how to do a disc brake conversion
using factory parts? Possibly from an S-10, camaro, etc. I found a nice 55
sitting in a bush with the front spindles removed. It's a perfect time to
do a conversion and get it back on wheels. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.
Keep up the good work Bob.

Joe's plan would work if he had enough venting- - -such as in a cattle
truck-
- - but will not work in a completely enclosed truck bed with only one
small
vent. In order to fly, the birds need to push the air down with their
wings.
In other words, the pressure of the air against the floor of the truck has

to compensate for the weight of the birds. This compensation would mean
the
truck weighs the same whether the birds are flying or sitting.

In a more open truck, the air pressure would equalize with the outside air,

allowing the pressure against the floor of the truck bed to be reduced.
Thus
Joe's truck might make weight while on the scales. Of course, someone
might
notice the honking horn and the flapping birds...

Unfortunately, Joe is going to have to come up with a better scheme if he
wants
to improve his profit on that Joplin, MO to Riverside, CA run!

The way the problem is set-up, Joe's plan would supposedly work only if he
were
able to keep 100% of the birds airborne for the entire time that his truck
was
passing over any given scale. This would be a real neat trick in and of
itself,
since even frightened fowl will flit from one spot to another, land, take
off
again, etc.

The problem, though, is that even a bird has to exert a force to keep
itself
airborne. The downward force exerted by each bird to keep itself airborne
also
has to react against something. Since the birds are confined, the
"reaction"
surface is nothing other than the truck bed! Thus, even if all the fowl
stay
airborne 100% of the time, the truck will still be over the legal limit.

Re the discussion of drum/disk brakes a few e-mails ago. I found a web
site that had a discussion of drum and disk brakes. Most of it was in
agreement with what has been published before. A few things were hard to
understand. I invite people to weigh in on this web sites "Facts". They
claim that 7 factors determine how fast your brake will stop a car:

1. The amount of pressure applied to the brake pedal.
2. The total area of the brake lining.
3. The diameter of the brake disk or drum.
4. The diameter of the cars tires.
5. The coefficient of friction between the brake pads and the disk or drum.
6. The ability of the brake to dissipate heat.
7. The coefficient of friction between the tire and ground.

These all seem to be realistic. I never thought about tire size having
anything to do with braking ability but I guess it makes sense that a
larger tire has more energy going around than a small tire.

One statement made in this web site that seems odd to me in view of the
recent discussion was this.
"With the same amount of force on a break pedal (no power assist) and
brakes that are cold, drum brakes will stop you in less distance than disk
brakes the FIRST time they are applied."
The claimed reasons for this is there is more brake pad area touching metal
and disk brakes need more power to exert pressure on the brake pads than
drum brakes do.

However, drum brakes do not get rid of heat near as well as disk brakes so
after the first time they are applied, disk brakes will probably stop a
car sooner. Anyone one know if this is the case.
