I have a carburetion question for the list. I have a 57 2 dr sedan with an
approximately 64 vintage 283, Rochester 4 bbl (4GC, I believe). I have
tuned
the engine, complete with points, condenser, dwell and timing. The carb
rebuild is not very old, either. However, I have a hesitation in the
acceleration.
The idle is smooth and seems to be about the right speed. There's no
problem with starting, either cold or hot. Acceleration at driving speed
doesn't seem to be consistently affected. Sometimes there is a lag. The
accelerator pump gives four streams although not as consistently as I would

like. I have noticed that there has been some grayish (whitish when dry)
residue in the
bowls. I have tried adjusting choke, idle speed, and tuning. Any thoughts
on whether this gray residue is likely to be lead being dissolved by
alcohol
additives to modern gas and deposited in the carb from the tank? I would
assume that this could easily result in clogging up the jets, etc. Before
I
take this carb apart again I'd like to get some ideas from someone who's
been there before. Any ideas on what to do to rid the tank of this
leftover
lead, if that's what this is?

PS - Several weeks ago I read that someone was looking to lower their car
without adding drop spindles. I raised mine by adding good rear leaf
springs so I have some "worn out" rear springs that will lower the back of
the car about 2 inches, if interested. (haha)

I would like to ask fellow members that have experienced
this conversion, we would like to go with a crate 350 motor and a 700r4
tranny. The questions that we have are:
1) Are there specifications as to where the side motor mounts should
be? Since we have decided to go with a GM HEI distributor, we know that
the
engine/trans would need to be moved forward but, how far and exactly
where?
We're concerned if the motor is too high/low or straight.
2) Headers? What manufactures and type (block huggers or what) is
the
best to clear. Keeping in mind that we have the stock steering box and
that
the motor would be moved forward.
3) Does anyone know if all crate 350's are compatible with all
intake
manifolds? We are thinking of a small (600) Holley and Edelbrock intake
manifold. My mechanic is concerned that the newer engines are designed for
TBI's or fuel injection systems.
We are looking at building a cruiser with a little kick.
But, definitely not a racer! If anyone out there has some experience and
can help us, we would appreciate it!

Thanks, much!
Mel

Hi Bob,
I have a small problem that I hope someone on this list can help me
with. Several months ago I replaced the ignition switch on my '55. It's
gone again, only this time I can't get it apart. I've pushed a paper clip
in the lower hole next to the key slot, I can feel the locking mechanism
release, (or maybe just partially relaease), but the key assembly won't
turn and come out. Any suggestions from list members? Please e-mail me
direct with any suggestions. Thanks, folks, and thanks Bob. Wild Bill

Bob,
I'm looking for a source for the special a-arm bushing removal tool that
Classic Chevy used to sell as part 49-63 but has since discontinued. This
was known as J-5888 in the original Kent-Moore supplied version to the
Chevrolet dealers.

Thanx,

Does anyone know a part number for the lower radiator hose on a '57 Chevy
that has a 350 but with the radiator in front of the radiator support? It's
a friend of mine who has the car. He has the 350 setting on the original
283 motor mounts, but the 350 has a long water pump and accessories. He's
trying to find a hose long enough to reach and I thought maybe someone on
the list here would know a part number. Thanks.

Crazy wheels?

The reason why the spokes on the wheels sometimes run in reverse is film
is actually a series of still photos with a slight time gap between still
images. based on the spoke pattern, that gap may place the next view of
the spoke to "appear" to be behind the expected location for the spoke or
in the same spot.

This problem was most evident in the westerns with the stagecoaches!

Hi Bob
My wife and I acquired a 1956 4 door wagon, cheap, and before hauling it
home the seller heated the door bolts for easier removal ( we swapped
frames
at the time and lifted the body with a forklift, padding the arms and
extended them through the door openings). My question/request relates to
the door hinge piece inside the body that is trapped and floats for
adjustment. I would like to prevent rust/corrosion in this area after the
heating removed most of the paint coating. And this area is not accessible
unless the body was to be dipped in a vat of stripper, which I am not
doing.
Any ideas on how I can rustproof/paint/treat this area would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks, Joseph Rock

HI BOB:

Please post this on the Chevy List:

I sent an e-mail to Charlie Shew regarding sandblasting his 57 2 door post.
Not sure if he received it. NO sandblasting should be done on exterior
sheet metal as it warps the body panels.

I made this mistake and now my bodyman has to work the sheet metal on my
front fenders back into shape. (Oh well, live and learn, I guess) !

The floors (top and bottom), inside the trunk and the dash can be
sandblasted but no exterior sheet metal.
Hope he gets this message before it is too late.

Thanks

This is regarding a Rolling Chassis and Doors for a '57 Chevy Convertible.
I expect it would work for any of the 3 years of Chevys, 1955-57.

Our restoration shop here in Tucson has taken possession of these and can
be reached at the following:
Spud Hester
(520) 883-2475

I've seen these parts myself. They will need to be media-blasted and
painted, or powder-coated. But they're solid and very hard to find. They
would be useful in building a tri-5 convertible from scratch or replacing a
bad chassis or doors. New windows will be needed in the doors, but they're
available in the repro. market. I can't vouch for the window regulators
but believe they're all there.

I recently bought a '50 high performance piece. A McCulloch model VS57
V-belt driven centrifugal supercharger! This is the same type of
supercharger that was installed on Studebakers, Kaisers, and some Ford
t-birds. The really cool thing is that the product manual (copywrite1957)
has a picture of this supercharger mounted on a '56 chevy 265 and the
caption reads "Make the Hot One Melt!" This kind of gets a guys blood
boiling. I may have to pull the big block and drop in a supercharged
small block, what a nostalgia rod! Has any one ever played around with
one of these old superchargers? It is a pretty sophisticated design. It
has a variable ratio pulley so that at low engine speeds the blower does
not make very much boost. At high speed the blower "shifts" and starts to
make boost. The shifting is controlled by an electric solenoid. This
solenoid can be activated three ways. 1. With a vacuum activated switch
that will automatically kick in the blower when the engine is making a lot
of vacuum (mid to high rpm). 2. With a switch mounted on the accelerator
so the blower kicks in then the pedal is smashed to the floor. 3. With a
manual switch so you can kick in the ponies when you need them. Does
anyone have any idea where a guy might find parts for a McCulloch
supercharger? It would be nice to get some new seals for the blower.
Also, I am missing the double grove crank pulley. It takes a special
pulley because the blower belt is larger than a standard fan belt. If I
can not find the pulley I should be able to manufacture one. Thanks Hugh

The reason for the seeming "backwards" movement and "standing still"
effect of wheels in the movies is the speed of the film through the camera.
When a wheel is turning faster than a camera exposes one frame of film, the
wheel appears to be turning backwards. When the camera exposes one frame at
the exact time a wheel is in the same position as the preceding frames and
following frames, the wheel appears to be standing still. Remember, a movie
film is a series of still photographs. Wild Bill

More on the birds in the truck dilemma... Air is like water. If you put a

2000 lb boat in a lake, that lake is 2000 lb heavier. Now the boat did
displace some water but nevertheless the weight is still there. Now, the
chickens in the back of a closed truck- that weight is also still there.
The
weight can't disappear; it is still supported by air. As a matter of fact,

if you stand beneath a hovering bird (or more demonstratively, a
helicopter)
you will feel the pressure of the air. That truck will not be any lighter.

Now if a person jumps in the back of that truck, for an instant it will
appear heavier as the person propels off of the floor (gaining
acceleration)
and then lighter as the person is off the floor.
