Bob,

The little circles with a triangle inside on the radio dial indicated
CIVIL DEFENCE radio frequency. These frequencies were reserved for warning
of disasters (like atomic bomb attack). BUT, not all of our TriFive radios
had those symbols on the dial. 1956 was the first year requiring the
symbol be on all radio dials, therefore a CORRECT radio dial for 1955 cars
does NOT have those symbols. The problem now days is that most people think
that only the radio knobs were different between 1955 and 1956 so the
radios have been swapped between both years with only the knobs being
changed.

doing

or even a fiberglass?I have a glass one but I believe it to be a 55, either
way I'd prefer a steel one.

Hi Bob: Actually, the triangles at 640 and 1240 did not appear until 1956.
That's how you can distinguish a '55 radio from a '56. These were the
stations that you would turn to in case of a national emergency. After a
series of beeps, the station that you were listening to would instruct you
to
tune in to either of these two frequencies. The name was Conolrad, which I
have grossly misspelled. Being a kid in grade school in the '50's, you
would
have learned this along with getting under your desk during air raid
drills.
Thanks for all of your work, Jay

Hi Bob,

I have a question to the group.

Could someone PLEASE explain to me what a "Styeline DLX BelAir" is?
I've seen this posted in a couple of places on the net (like Ebay).

For 30 years I've been into 55 - 57 Chevies. Right now I own five (5) '57s,
that includes all three body styles. My first, a 57 BelAir 2-door Hardtop
(Sport Coupe), I've owned since 1972.

I have never seen (or heard) of a "Styleline DLX" body until now.
Any help answering this question? Thanks. RJ

I was unable to locate this part number. When I had this problem,
I
went to Pep Boys and they let me go behind the counter and look through
their extensive hose collection. I found a hose that would work with a
little trimming. This is probably the best way to do it.

them and it was 1956 (first year) and 1963 last year for cars, naturally
some of 56 radios got in 55 cars but this not correct we still fix a
few of these and when rebuilt they are great like the rest of the car!

Radio triangles were part of the CONELRAD system of civil defense
warning. All broadcasting would stop in case of an emergency and you
would go to 640/1240 for directions on how to put your head between your
legs and kiss yourself goodby...
Used on '56 Chevys, not on '55s and is the quickest way to tell them
apart.

#1 IS THERE ANY ADJUSTMENT AT ALL IN THE HINGES ?

Hi Bob,
The triangles on the dial denoted radio frequencies for emergency
broadcast. It was called "The Emergency Broadcast System". It was initially
developed to give warning of an impending nuclear attack. Later it was
expanded to include severe weather warnings and was used to direct people
to shelters, etc. I believe it first came into use in either the late 40s
or early 50s. Wild Bill

I can tell you that those little triangles came out in 1956, so you
won't see them on a 1955 radio. They were the locations to tune into in
the case of a national emergency. I believe it was called the "Emergency

Sorry Bob, the '55 radios didn't have these. These were added to '56
and '57 radios for civil defense locations on your radio dial. One of
the quick ways to tell difference between the '55 and '56 radio is the
triangles.

Hi Bob,

Regarding your question about the small triangles on the radio dials:

President Truman established the CONELRAD [CONtrol of ELectronic RADiation]
system in 1951. to provide emergency alert to the public. Under this first
national alerting system in the event of a Soviet attack on the United
States, all commercial radio stations would cease normal operation, in
order
to prevent Soviet bombers from homing in on their targets by using specific
radio commercial radio stations as navigation beacons. Instead, selected
CONELRAD stations would broadcast on either 604kHz or 1240kHz to inform the
public about emergency measures. As part of the system it was obligatory
for
all radios sold after 1953 to have the CONELRAD frequencies 640/1240 kHz
marked with small triangles on the dial. The triangles were referred to as
CD marks, for Civil Defense. The marks on the radio dial were to make
finding the frequencies easy. This requirement was dropped, when the
CONELRAD system was replaced by the Emergency Broadcast System in 1963.

By the early 1960's the development of Soviet missiles had made the
CONELRAD system obsolete. Nowadays, even the Emergency Broadcast System
has
been replaced by the Emergency ALERT System. Under IT the weather service,
police agencies, or other government authority, can declare an emergency
and
broadcast an alert via the E.A.S. System. Most often it's used for weather
alerts.

Here in L.A. we don't even have a decent station for music left on the A.M.
dial, so there's not much to listen to. Anybody know a slick way to play a
cassette tape on a 57's radio speaker (with the transformer mounted on it)?

Don Kent
Northridge, CA

Editor's note. At the Long Beach swap meet a few months ago, someone was
selling a console that set above the transmission with a cassette player
and speaker in it. It looked very nice and it could be removed very easy
for judging if necessary.
BOB

To: [unknown], Bob_Ford

I believe these were special frequencies that were supposed to broadcast
"public service information" in the event of a "national emergency" (ie The
Commies are Coming!, The Martians have Landed!, etc ).
I believe all other broadcast stations were supposed to sign off the air in
these type situations to allow these "clear channel" stations virtually
nationwide coverage....

Charles,
A 55 Chevy 2 door SEDAN will fit directly on a 55 4 door sedans's frame
with no modification. However, if what you have is a 2door hardtop, that
won't fit on the 4 door's frame without adding an extra body mount. But
yes;
a 2dr sedan and a 4dr sedan's frame will work together. The frames for
these
two body styles (and the 6 passenger station wagons) were the same.
