Styleline was a Chevy series from 1949 to 1952 (the Bel Air of those
years as the top Chevy series). The first Bel Air was in 1951 and a
"hardtop" (no post) version of the Styleline Deluxe series.
Therefore, an old Chevy guy might still call, after 1952, a top of the
line series, a Styleline even though Chevy dropped the name in '52 when
Bel Air became the top series. Similar to 1958 when the top Bel Air
model (the conv and sport coupe{"hardtop"}) became an Impala and then in
1959, the Impala became the top series with the Bel Air the second
series (similar to the 210 model in 55-57). Before 1949, the top series
was a called a Stylemaster. The Fleetline was the "fastback" model
(2-dr and 4 dr) from '49 through '52.

Bob--

In regards to H. Smith's question on "backward-spinning wheels" in cinema:

Wheels appear to spin backwards because of the film speed used in the
filming. If the number of frames per second is faster than the number of
wheel rotations per second, the camera will "photograph" the wheel just
short of its next complete revolution. The next frame captures the exact
same thing. And the next. And so on. The result is a wheel that appears
to spin in a direction opposite to the car's movement. If the frame speed
=
the revolution/second speed, the result is a "still" wheel.

Not to further prolong a non-Chevy topic, but . . .
Kevin, in Delaware, offered a simplified explanation of the theory of
flight
(Bernoulli principle creating low pressure over an airfoil, thus resulting
in lift to counter gravity). How then do we explain inverted flight with
the same airfoil? Would not the low pressure area then be UNDER the wing,
causing the plane to plummet from the sky as the "lift" forced it downward?
Is this "counterforce" overcome by shear brute thrust? MAN! I learn a lot
on this list! ;>)

Here is some trivia for you.
2. The band of Bill Haley (Rock Around the Clock) was named after what car?

I believe Bill Haley named his band after the celestial body COMET, not the
car. Bill Haley changed the name of his band to the Comets in 1952.
Mercury
didn't make the Comet until 1960.

I have to ask the same question as RJ. I've had or been around Tri-Fives
since High School and never heard of a "Styleline Delux." Who came up
with
that and what is it referring to? I may be missing something here since I
don't drive my '56 Nomad all that much. It just turned over 700 miles
last
month.

Hi Bob,

I would just like to wish everyone on the list and their familes a "Happy
Holiday Season."

Last year at this time, my sister had just went through a Bone Marrow
transplant for Luekemia. Things didn't look good for a long time. A LOT of
nice people I met on the net, prayed for her, a person none of THEM had
ever
met.

My sister returned to work this past week, her first in over a year. The
Lord was VERY kind to her.

This truly will be a "Happy" season for my family, I hope for yours as
well.

Thanks. RJ

Bob,
I see compliments on your site every update and there is a reason; It is a

great site; I have to check my mail every night to see the next "edition".

I have to respond to John Lynn's comments about our current generation of
children. Most of the kids in high school and in their 20's do not know
even 10 state capitol's and their states. The average is 3 (THREE).

Is anyone glad to see that we have a president? Of course; but how many
people realize what has just occurred!!!
Our country survived, without even blinking, what most countrys could not
have. With a few exceptions, most would have been taken over by the
military - we survived.

The sad part is that most of the young people don't even care; "I'm so
tired
of seeing that on TV." Etc. They do not realize the total ramifications of

all that went on, nor do they care. In fact, many won't even remember in
the next election.

Enough - it's time to get back to the thrust of this site. Bob, Keep up
the
good work.

Merry CHRISTmas to you and all your readers.

Hi Bob,
In answer to Roy's question about the safest SUV for his wife, it's the
Hummer. It will roll over anything else with 4 wheels!

Also, Bill Haley's band was the Comets but not named for the FOMOCO
product of that name. The Bill Haley group actually started in the late
'40s or early '50s. The Comet automobile was introduced by Mercury in the
1960 model year. The band was called the Comets because of Haley's comet.
I think 1960 was the last year for the generator/power steering
combination. That's just a guess, though. Wild Bill

Hi Bob,
Regarding Scott and RJ's question about the Styleline DeLuxe Bel Air.
Yes, there was such a car. In 1949 Chevy gave a new name to the Stylemaster
line of cars. It was Styleline. The four levels of Chevrolet were
Styleline, Fleetline, Styleline DeLuxe and Fleetline DeLuxe. In the 1950
model year, Chevrolet introduced the Bel Air name for the first time. It
was a Styleline DeLuxe hardtop coupe, what we now cal a 2 door hardtop,
having no center pillar. In 1953 the Bel Air became a separate line,
followed by the 210 DeLuxe and then the 150 DeLuxe. The models remained the
same for the '54 model run. Everybody knows what followed the '54s! Wild

Those two holes you've noted on the sides of the "nut" portion of the M/Cyl
reservoir cap are indeed vent holes. They're supposed to be there.

They must be open in order that fluid can flow, by gravity, down into the
cylinder when the piston is at the rear of its' stroke (and the reservoir
port
is uncovered). I suppose one could construct some type of "dehydrating bag"
to
place within a confined space above the fluid. You'd have to design a large
enough chamber with a diaphragm above (like on more modern brake
M/Cylinders) to
compensate for the volume change as fluid flows in and out of the cylinder,
though. Personally, I'd rather just change my DOT 4 brake fluid every 3-4
years
- which would be a good idea anyway.

Bob,
an answer for Bob in Chico question:
the nut portion on the cap was badly knarled so I used a file to
try and square up the surfaces again. I notice a pinhole on two opposite
aces of the nut. Did I file to far or are these breather holes? I forgot
to look before I filed.
----
I believe the answer is yes you need them for venting. It's kind of like
the
Sun Tea Jar.

You can't get the tea out unless it has a vent. If you used your brake and
then pumped it, the

second time you would not have brake fluid in the plunger area. The caps
are
soft so you might

be able to pock a small wire through the cap from the inside.

I read a good post about the frames that were made for our cars . I didn't
realize that G.M. farmed out some of their frames in the 50s to the O.A.
Smith Co. I would have to think that Smith sent G.M. the frame rails in
pieces and they were welded together on a jig . It would be easier to ship
to the assembly plants than complete frames . Also I own a 57 Corvette (
The forgotten 55-57 ) and it has a two piece frame , If Smith made the
Vette frames and they are two piece , I would think the two piece pass.
frames were stamped out by them . It's hard to say who did the welding .
Does anybody have assembly line pictures ? BOB. willisb@kos.net

Bob -The Styleline designation was used until 1953 to describe body
styles. In '53 came the familiar 150, 210 & Bel Air titles.
52 and earlier had the styleline and the fleetline in both special and
deluxe series. Styleline looked like one small box on top of a larger
box, fleetline was a fastback. By '52, fleetlines were down to one 4
door deluxe series.
I cannot imagine how a 55 thru 57 Rochester carburetor could operate
without a steel ball in the bottom of the accelerator pump well. Doug
Roe's excellent book on Rochester Carbs shows them on Monojets, 2G and
4G series as a "pump discharge ball". ISBN on this book is
0-89586-301-4. A great source of both theory and practical applications
and even a section on modifications.

Yes Bob. In fact, here in OKC we are lucky enough to still have a
Drive-In Theater. This past September our club had a "Drive-In" night. I
had not been to a drive-in in 20 years, so I was expecting to still have
speakers for each car. Remember hanging the speaker on the window? (I
lived in Ohio at the time.. then you would roll up the window and try
not freeze.. using MANY different means. LOL!) Well when I got to this
theater I found that they broadcast the movie audio on AM and FM and
there are no more speakers. My original 56 BelAir's pushbutton AM radio
would have killed my battery! I was in a quandry, but thanks to other
COCCC members who shared their radios, we had a very nice time. (Didn't
get to steam up the windows like in the old days though... )

I have to disagree, Bob, with your answer to what NOS means. You are
correct in that it stands for New Old Stock, but as far as my
understanding, these are not new parts - as if they were made new
yesterday or in the last year - but new parts made a long time ago that
have never been used. That is, someone may have found parts at a Chevy
dealership that have been sitting on the self for 40 some years. These
would be NOS - "new" parts in "old stock". A new part made or
reproduced now or recently is not NOS. Years ago at the Portland,
Oregon, swap meet, I bought 3 deluxe heater valves that are in the
original boxes with GM numbers and all. These would be NOS. A heater
valve made today as a replacement would not be NOS even if it was made
as an exact duplicate. I believe there is a term NROS which means New
Replacement Old Stock. This would be a part that was made as a
replacement part, 40 years ago or so, but not one that matches or is
made by a GM company. Another example, if you were to find a
"tar-top" battery sitting on a shelf or 40-45 years that would be NOS.
If you were to find another type of battery that had also been sitting
on a shelf for 40-45 years that would be NROS. A newly manufactured
"tar-top" battery is not NOS. Anyone selling or advertising it to be
so, in my opinion, is making a fraudulent claim.

Phillip

Editor's note. I had to go back and check what I said about NOS. This is
it.

>> Editor's note. NOS stands for New Old Stock. These are new parts made
>by the company that built the car as replacement parts.
> BOB
>>

Here is my understanding of what New Old Stock means. I invite list
members to let me know
if they agree or disagree.

"New Old Stock parts are parts made by GM with the same part number as the
part number of the part on the car when it was built."

There are some parts on the TriFives that you can go to a Chevy dealer
today and buy then new. They have the same part number as the original
part. These are not old parts in the sense they were built many years ago.
They are still used in recently built cars. Are these NOS parts?

If a part is not made by GM, I don't think it can be called New Old Stock.
I have heard these parts called NORS meaning New Old Reproduction Stock.

List members, I invite your comments. Also if you have had your car
judged, how do NOS parts affect the juding?

My newly rebuilt 1955 265 Rochester 2 barrel (2G) carburetor has two check
balls in the accelerator pump circuit at inlet and outlet. They are shown
in
the rebuild kit instructions and also in my 1957 Motor's Manual Rochester
section. I have a hesitation which feels like insufficient pump action. I

checked for vacuum (the idle is very smooth) leaks, maximized the pump
stroke
and raised the float level 1/4 inch higher than specified. It still
hesitates on acceleration. Am I missing something?

Hi Bob,
Tube radios had vibrators to chop the DC so the transformer could step up
the
voltage. When low voltage/low current transistorized radios became the
standard about 1962 we no longer needed the vibrator and the power-hungry
tubes that could quickly run your battery down.
