I was talking to a man from Australia at the SEMA show in Las Vegas
this past November. He was a member of the local 55-56-57 club in the
Queensland area. He informed me that all the Australian 57's used 55-56
dashes. Being right-hand-drive, the 55-56 dash is symmetrical and saved
tooling cost over a 57 specific RHD dash. He also mentioned that the vast
majority of 55-57 Aussie cars are 4-doors. Obviously a marketing decision
somewhere there. Just to further my education on these cars; Does anyone
know which dash trim an Australian 57 used? Was it the 57 Bel Air pattern
in the contour of a 55-56 dash? No one will ever ask us for one at the
store, but I was just curious. Thanks, John at Restoration World.

Bob,

I recently purchased a '57 2-door post 210. The individual I bought it
from had started a resto on it, but apparently had no idea what he was
doing. He replaced and installed the window seals, headliner and door
panels before he started on the body work.
Now, I am in no way an expert myself. This is my first tri-5. I have
completed a couple of trucks. So, I have a little experience under my belt
and have found that research (no matter how exhausting) is the best way to
keep from doing something that you may regret later.
My question is: Where can I find manuals, books, instructions, etc. on
removal and installation of the window seals. These are new seals and I
would like to remove them without damaging them.
I am sure this is a simple process, but I just want to be sure I do it
right.
All the trim is there and in pretty good shape, But a lot of the steel
brackets that hold it on are rusted away or were broke off when the "not so
smart guy" jerked them off the car.
Every square inch of wiring was ripped out of the car also. Keep in
mind, that he had started putting the car back together to the point of
putting the seats back in.
So, any advice on installing a wiring harness, would be greatly
appreciated.
I have always wanted a '57, and now that I have one, I want to do it
right.
As time goes on I will be bothering you for more how-to answers and
keeping you updated on my progress.

Thanks

Hi Bob,
I have a '55 4 door, 210. This is my everyday driver for the past 10 years.

It is going in for a make over this winter and I have a few ideas.
I would like to suicide the rear doors and I need to know if anyone has
done
this before and if so what the difficulty level is. Also does anyone make
hinges for this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

I recently had the pleasure of seeing the film Rock Around the Clock on
cable and it was fantastic. I had never seen it before and was wondering
what all the fuss was about. Listening to the smart dialogue, country
accents, dancing, etc. was a pleasure. I had the feeling of seeing how
rock and roll really started - in these small, nondescript towns with some
kids wanting to have fun on a Saturday night.

Can anyone tell me who that wonderful dancer was? she had dark hair and
danced throughout the film. Did she get any other parts in
movies?

What do others here think about this movie?

<< My newly rebuilt 1955 265 Rochester 2 barrel (2G) carburetor has two
check
balls in the accelerator pump circuit at inlet and outlet. They are shown
in
the rebuild kit instructions and also in my 1957 Motor's Manual Rochester
section. I have a hesitation which feels like insufficient pump action.
I

checked for vacuum (the idle is very smooth) leaks, maximized the pump
stroke
and raised the float level 1/4 inch higher than specified. It still
hesitates on acceleration. Am I missing something?

Dennis, first of all, I would set that float setting back to where it is
supposed to be, a 1/4 inch is a LOT to be off in a float setting. You will
probably flood you car easily and/or burn excessive gas by having a high
float setting! Float settings are very critical. I would also set the pump
stroke back to where it is supposed to be! If it's too high, that can cause
a
hesitation. Try taking off the air horn(top) of your carb & very
carefully
with a small screwdriver, spread the rubber on the pump plunger OUTWARD, as

to slightly increase the diameter. Be careful not to bend or distort the
spring inside the rubber !!!!!!!!!!! Are you SURE you used the NEW pump
plunger & not the old one by Mistake????? GOOD LUCK!

<< There are some parts on the TriFives that you can go to a Chevy dealer
today and buy then new. They have the same part number as the original
part. These are not old parts in the sense they were built many years
ago.
They are still used in recently built cars. Are these NOS parts?

Bob, I don't believe these parts can be called NOS! Breaking down the NOS,

this is what it means: N= New-a never used part, regardless of
its
age!
O=Old-meaning the part is just that-OLD, being
produced by Chevrolet, GM, Delco/Remy or whoever made the part for these
cars
way back then, when these parts were meant to replace a part on these cars
when many were still on the road as every day drivers, (if that same part,
even with the same # on it, is still made today, I guarantee you that it
will
NOT be made exactly the same way it was back then!!!!!!!!! Just because a
part has the original stock # on it, does not make it an NOS part. Many
reproduction parts for these cars are produced with the original stock # on

them !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
S= Stock=meaning the part in reference to, that
had
been sitting on a shelf, stored in a warehouse or wherever!

If a part is not made by GM, I don't think it can be called New Old Stock.

I have heard these parts called NORS meaning New Old Reproduction Stock.

List members, I invite your comments. Also if you have had your car
judged, how do NOS parts affect the judging?

As far as judging goes, basically we judge the overall CONDITION of the
car,
& many times it is very difficult to distinguish an NOS part from a REPRO
part. Example: I have NOS fender birds & gravel guards on my 56, & I have
seen the reproduction ones, You can NOT tell the difference!!!!!!! I have
seen MANY very high point cars with MANY reproduction parts on
them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think the best way to
learn about these type of things is to attend a convention & JUDGE !!!!!!

Hi Bob,

In my part of the woods, anything left over from when Classic Chevies were
produced and wasn't/hasn't been used is called: "NOS." (New Old Stock)

Any parts produced now is called: "REPO." (as in Reproduction)

Like the NOS silver Grill I used when I restored my one owner '57 210
4-door
Sedan, or the Repo W W Tires I stuck on it.

Thanks to all the list members who answered my question about "Styline
DLX."
But I still have yet to see a Styline DLX 5 - 6 or 7 Chevy.

My dad was a Supervisor at A.O.Smith in Granite City, Illinois for quite a
few years. I remember as a little guy in the mid sixties going out there
with my mom to pick him up, and seeing the rail cars with stacks of
completed frames on them, maybe 15 high, getting ready to be sent over to
St. Louis, Mo.It's not a long journey by rail, as you can see the Gateway
Arch in ST. Louis from A.O.Smith--it's right across the Mississippi River.
He said these were Corvette frames. If I would have known then, what I know

Bob, regarding the term NOS, I also understand it to be original parts made

by GM for a particular during the production period of that model. i.e., 57

Chevy parts made from fall 1956 to fall 1957.
As far as judging goes, I don't think it really matters. Because you
almost
have to take the part off to find out whether it is NOS or not. I did a
frame off restoration on my 57 and used many reproduction parts, especially

stainless and chrome pieces and was never counted off for using them. In
fact the first CCI show I took it to was judged at 987 points, which in my

opinion is a very good first outing.
I once bought a tail fin piece which was reputed to be NOS however, I found

out later it was not even stainless but it had been chromed. I was told
that
some of these pieces were made this way. Needless to say I didn't use it.

Bob, I was trying to clarify that new parts made recently, even by GM,
even with the correct part number, etc, wouldn't, in my opinion, be
considered NOS. I suppose what has to be defined is the word
"recently". Does a part for a '55 made in '58, as a repair part, for
example, a ball joint or wheel bearing, count as NOS (I think it would)
VS a ball joint or wheel bearing made in 1990? Sometime, and I have no
idea where that "sometime" year is, a "new" part goes from NOS to a new
part. Usually, people think about NOS as parts that are not general
maintenance items, but items like accessories, original fabric, chrome,
even fenders, are all sought out and demand higher prices, usually, if
they are old new parts, ie, NOS, than a reproduction part. I felt
compelled to comment because I think your answer could be construed to
include any part, regardless of year of manufacture, if made by "the
company that built the car". Again, in my opinion and experience
(having owned a '55 since '78 - before most reproduction/remanufactured
parts were made for out Tri-Fives) NOS has always meant, old "new" parts
made by the company that built the car but with the caveat that they
were made in the same year or just several years after - not
recently. It could be that the definition of NOS has changed recently
and I'm out of date. Perhaps a comment by Cliff of Cliff's Classic
Chevy Parts or Donna of FiftiesForever would add to this NOS definition,
as both dealers in new and old parts.

Bob,
New old stock (nos) refers to n=new, o=old and original production as
1955 thru 1965/1970, and stock=inventory as found in an old dealership.
Forty
year old box and forty year old workmanship. IMHO, Rod......

Reno Rick,
That airfoil thing has confused my over the years. Stick your hand out the
window at a slant going 60 mph. does your hand rise from lift or pressure
under your hand. My vote goes for the pressure and not the sucking or
absence
of pressure. I fly radio controlled and an inverted flight requires a lot
of
down on the elevator to drag the tail, which tilts the wings up and causes
the pressure on the top ( or now bottom of the wing ), keeping it in
flight.
IMHO, Rod........

Dennis,
Only one check ball used Dennis. In the accelerator well, the pump only
uses
it on the suction port. The pressure port to the veturi is so small that
one
is not required. IMHO ( in my humble opinion ) Rod.......

Merry Christmas to all and the true meaning of Christ our Saviour be not
forgotten.

NOS parts are parts that were made by the original manufacturer, (GM for
example) and are now no longer available from that manufactured. They
have been discontinued by the manufacturer. If you can still purchase
that part over the counter it is not NOS. Even if an original part is
still available through GM now and next month it gets discontinued, it
then becomes NOS.

There are some NOS parts that are much older than others but they have
to be discontinued from the manufacturer to be called NOS. A part that
was discontinued from GM in the 60's has a great value because it has be
uavailable for 40 years. A part that was just discontinued last year
will not be as rare but nonetheless will have value also.

GM discontinues parts all the time. If you bought an original part
through GM with the original factory part #, and it becomes obsolete it
is now worth more than what you paid for it. Many people purchase NOS
parts even though you can buy that same part in a reproduction version.
They want to do their car in only original GM parts. They will pay much
more for those parts and will have to search all over the country to
find them.

Just look on Ebay under "nos corvette" or "nos Chevrolet". There are
hundreds of parts listed. You must however, be careful not to purchase a
new GM part listed as NOS but is really just a new part that you can
still purchase over the counter.

A car done in only nos parts will definitely be worth more than one done
with reproduction parts but it will cost much more to purchase those nos
parts.

Well, enough about NOS: I have to get ready for a Christmas Party!!
Happy Holidays to all!! Donna

Bob,
You asked about comments regarding NOS parts and the meaning.

Here's my view on it.

An NOS part has to be a new and unused part that not only has the same part
number as what the assembly line used, but also has the same design and no
longer be available. In many cases later parts, especially ones still
available thru GM SPO, are not of the same design as the original though
still retain the same number. In many cases these would not be
appropriate
in professionally judged events though would fit the specifications of the
engineers OK. For a specific example, in 1957 a set of AC 44 plugs had no
green stripes on the ridges. The same part number,1559492, was used well
into the 70s, but almost all that you see have the four green stripes.
But
this sort of "deviation" would probably only be taken into account in
Corvette events (NCRS style).

A part you can buy from GM today is simply "new", even if it has an "old"
number. If it happens to be perfectly identical to the vintage part, like
say the dipstick tube part # 3732488, then great - you can use it but its
still just a new GM part.

Another wrinkle is parts that are date coded in some way. Here it's not
enough to locate an NOS part, you have to find a "vintage" NOS part. One
made the same year your car was so that it has the proper date coding to
match your cars build date time line.

But then, all this hunting around for the right part(s) is half the fun
right....

Hi gang,

Need seats for my 55 2 door sedan street rod. Anyone know what kind of
cars
would give me power seats and a fairly easy bolt in installation without
too
many mods? On rear ends, what year Fords would have the closest thing to
fitting in a 9" rear without major mods. A while back, I posted a request

list owns a wagon or has a friend that does, the serial number was:
B55J114687. The car was sold out of West Columbia, SC in 1978. The car
was
rust free back then so I would like to think that it still does exist. I
owned the car when I was in high school and we used to fold down the rear

It would be great if you could post this request on the list.
I recently purchased the last 10 inches of trunk floor replacement

Bob:

After rebuilding the 605 power steering gearbox, I installed in into my 57
Chev 2 door hardtop. Although it definitely works, it fails to
automatical
ly return to center. In other words, whatever position the
steering wheel is in, it tends to remain there. Usually, power steering
finds the center of the road and guides itself.

Before someone suggests alignment, that's been done twice. None of the
ball
joints are overly tight and all 4 have been replaced. In addition, the
pitman arm bushing was replaced and isn't overly tight either. I also
tried
two different kinds of tires.

I've taken the 605 apart twice and all seems to be ok. What did I do to
the
605 (or fail to do to the 605) to make this happen?
