I have a couple concerns. First of all, I'm going over the entire brake
system on my 56 Chevy. I have all of the wheel cylinders off and I have
them
disassembled for rebuilding. Question is- What (if anything) do I use as
an
assembly lube? Brake fluid won't go into the system until spring. Or do i

just assemble the wheel cylinders dry?
Another question- I noticed on my outside sun visor that the underside
is
painted a medium green. I have noticed this on other cars, even though the

top side is a different color. What is this green called and where can I
get
it?
I am also looking for a set of stainless steel window shades for a 4
door
wagon. They are reproduced for 2 and 4 door sedans, but not for the 4 door

wagon.

Thanks,

Hey gang!

I have a friend here in the Reno, Nevada area who is parting out a
rust-free
'57 210 2-door sedan, and also has parts left from some other '57s he has
had. He really is down to just the sheet metal, frame and "heavy" parts
now, but here is a list, if anyone happens to be close enough to want to
make a trip here for pickup (no shipping will be done -- at least not at a
price that would make it worthwhile for you!):

<All are from a 210 2-door sedan, unless specified otherwise.>

2 doors . . . $150/ea
hood . . . $150
2 trunk lids . . . $75 ea
L. quarter panel (2-dr hardtop) . . . $300
R. quarter panel . . . $300
front bumper (3 piece) . . . $125
2 rear bumpers . . . $125/ea
dash core (all metal, from pillar to pillar) . . . $75
3 assorted front fenders . . . $75/ea
splash apron . . . $50
complete frame (with most front suspension and steering gone, but third
member still mounted & ready to roll away) . . . $250
clean roof panel . . . $75
hood hinges . . . $50/pr

So . . . any of my California brethren in need of some clean sheet metal,
and want to drive over for a fun day in Reno, then take home your new
parts?
My pal's name is Robert, and is not email enabled (or he would definitely
be
on this list!), so I am posting on his behalf. Please email or call me
with
any questions about the parts. Many are from a '57 (the sedan) that was
mine 21 years ago, and I know them pretty well! It was bad enough to see
my
old car cut up -- I would hate to see the remaining parts go to the crusher
or landfill. Someone needs this stuff!

Hi all, to answer the question about what dash trim we use for an
Australian 57, it is the trim from a 56. And you are right, the majority of
5-6-7s built here were 4 doors, and mostly 210's. But there were some 57 4
door hard tops, again fitted with a 56 right hand drive dash, and we did
have a few Belair's, but very few, and most of our chevs here were 6
cylinders. Hope that helps a bit with the history of the tri-fives, here in
Australia, Hope you all have a merry and safe Christmas, and if anyone
would like to know more about the Aussie history of chevs, then just
contact me, kind regards Tony.

Bob,
I am ready to replace the convertible top on my 57. I have done just about
everything that can be done to my 55, 56 & 57 Chevys over the last 35
years.
But never installing a top by myself. Anyone out there have some good

TERM NOS
I was going to respond to original question on NOS, but I didn't. At
Phillip
Brown's request I will.

NOS has two meanings. New Old Stock and New Original Stock. Either is a
new
part in the original GM box that is no longer available from GM. There are
new 55-56-57 parts still available from GM, these are new, NOT NOS. I
have
seen a lot of these new parts show up on Ebay as NOS, this is a false
statement.

NOS can refer to any manufacture of parts that are no longer available.
When
buying ask questions.

NOS GM parts are the best to use when available, but can be expensive. I
have
found that most 55-56-57's being restored are for fun not hard core show.

There are a lot of quality 55-56-57 parts being reproduced. Unfortunately
there are a lot of inferior parts being made too. If you keep this in mind

you will save yourself a lot of stress.

When unsure email me and ask.

Reference Skip and Mary

I have a good used trunk striker support for 30.00 and a guide pin hole
metal
for 10.00. Plus shipping.

Reference Barry on the 605
Question to you. Did the old box return to center? If so I would suspect

the new box. First thing to check is to see if you have it adjusted too
tight. If it is back it off a turn and see what it does.

Also check and see if the idler bushing is binding up. You stated the
pitman
arm bushing was replaced, do you mean idler arm bushing?

Another item to check is the proper caster. 605's I sell need about 3.5-4
degrees positive caster. If you can't achieve this you may need to use
offset
upper A arm shafts. Does the front end alignment person you used do a lot
of
these conversions/
You may consider another 605 box if these all check out OK.

If you were closer to me I could check it out.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO EVERYONE.

Re questions about NOS. I'm sure there will be near universal agreement
that the
acronym stands for "New Old Stock", but the precise meaning of "New Old
Stock"
is likely to prove elusive! My understanding, after more years in the hobby
than
I care to count, is that NOS is intended to refer to a replacement part
that was
manufactured by either the vehicle manufacturer, or the original supplier
of
that component to the vehicle manufacturer, for use as a service
replacement -
and that it was manufactured around the time that the vehicle itself was
manufactured. Thus, a replacement part for a '55 Chevy that is manufactured
in
2000 (whether by GM or anyone else and regardless of part number) can not
truly
be termed NOS. That is not to say that I would always be looking for NOS.
In
actuality, many items deteriorate while on-the-shelf. For example, I'd
prefer to
use recently-manufactured brake, radiator, and heater hose even if true NOS
items were available for the same price.

Another member asked about procedures for removal of window seals. I'd
strongly
recommend looking for copies (either new or reprints) of any Shop, Service,
Overhaul, and in the case of a '50's GM passenger Car - the Fisher Body
Service
Manual for your vehicle. These are generally available from a number of
sources.
No, they are often not cheap, but will save much time and prove a wise
investment in the long run. I place special emphasis on the Fisher Body
Service
Manual, as it will deal with headliner replacement, window regulators,
locks,
hinges, wiring harness routing, and many other things cited by member Brian
Meyers.

With respect to Chevy frames, I'd have to side with the member who observed
completed A. O. Smith frames on railcars and headed for GM assembly plants.
While I'm older than the member who observed these frames, I'm too young to
have
observed GM assembly lines in '55. I did tour GM's Tarrytown Assembly plant
around June of '62 just before I was accepted for sponsorship at General
Motors
Institute in Flint. I can assure all that the "X" type frames used on the
Chevy
Biscayne/Belair/Impala at that time arrived at the plant fully assembled
and
welded.

GM does, though, perform some assembly and welding on truck frames. These
are
typically larger, more difficult to handle when completed, come in various
wheelbases, and so forth.

Good post by Phillip L. Brown re the use of "Styleline" terminology

Brian,
Your question about wiring is a very important one. Many people do
extensive restorations on their classics and bypass the wiring because
it looks fine!!

45 year old wiring is usually brittle, has been spliced into many times
and has much resistance just from age.
If you are going to replace any or all wiring, our wiring harnesses
comes with directions. They are color coded like the original and have
all the factory connections. They are all plug in. We also have an
enlarged schematic of the wiring routing. Just give us a call or email
for more info.
Regarding your question on glass removal and replacement, I'm not an
expert but I can tell you it is more difficult when you have to worry
about saving the rubber seals. If you are trying to save the glass, it
is easier to slice the rubber. The lower moldings should be removed
first. Two of the threaded studs have to be removed from the inside
under dash. The upper windshield moldings have to come out with the
windshield, as they are sectioned between the seal.
Hope this helps! We have new seals and clips too.

Hi Bob,

On the NOS parts.

When I restored my 210 4-door Sedan, I used many NOS and Repo parts.

Not once has anyone EVER commented that they think the NOS parts are nicer
than the Repos. I doubt the Gen. public (or judges) can tell any
difference?

I also don't agree that using NOS parts vs Repo parts makes a Classic
"Worth
More,"

I've always said: "Those NOS parts may be nice (and EXPENSIVE) but when you
bolt them down to use them they just became nice USED parts and NOT NOS
anymore." Afterall, if you used them, they AREN'T New Old Stock anymore,
but
New Used Stock.

As for "When" an NOS part was produced, and is it NOS or Repo is a good
question?

Thanks. RJ

John,
I am also from Queensland and the 57 Chev's down under didn't use any dash
trim because most were 210 Models as we got very few Belairs and even fewer
V8's as most were 6 cylinders. The dashes on the 55 and 56 models even
though they look symmetrical, aren't, as the V shapes are slightly
different
angles. For some reason GM tooled up for right hand dashes for the 55 and
56 models but not the 57. We do it hard down here with base model autos but
we have had an influx of nice American autos in the last few years which
has livened up our scene.

Hi Bob,

Happy Holidays to you, yours and all list members.

This is for Barry and his question about his 605 power steering.
Barry, the 605 is what
is called full time power steering. To my limited knowledge, most full
time power steering
units did not return to straight. This was a feature of the part time
power steering units and
non power steering.
I once heard a story about a guy who bought a new car with his first
power steering
feature. After driving the car off the lot, after making a hard right
turn, hit a utility pole!
He was used to the old regular steering returning when you let the wheel
slip through his
hands.
It sounds as if yours is working just fine. I have the same
conversion in my 57 Nomad.
Instead of steering like a tank, it has become a pleasure to drive. I
would also suggest
the addition of a front end anti sway bar. The car will handle much
better and go where
you point it. It has made a great improvement in the over steering.
Especially if you are
running radial tires.

Lots of luck.

G'Day Bob, Merry Xmas to you & your family & to all your readers from all
Downunder
in Australia. In answer to John Restoration World (leonard john) re 55-57
Aussie Chev Dash.....All these cars came from Canada ( except for a few
that
were bought into this country by some of the Big City Car Dealers of the
day
who did individually Import some USA models ( Have seen some Bel Airs that
have been here since late 50's over the years).

Thru the established GM (Holden network) all you could buy were 4 Door
sedans none had V8 Motors, all 6 Cyl. All 3 speed Trans Column Shift. None
had
heaters that I can recall. These were all Plain Jane Sedans. Power Steer &
Automatic not Available.
Might say a basic 210 Model. About the only option was paint colour.

In those days & into the late 60's the cars Thru GM & FORD sold down here
had usually a 3 year run on same items on a lot of cars. The dash on a
55-57 was the same I guess for the simple reason It was easy for right hand
drive version. The numbers required for the USA regular Dash would have
been
to expensive in my opinion.

The dash had No Alloy Panels like Bel Air. As I said these were just basic
cars.

I have been in the Automotive Biz all my life and owned & sold & Imported
many American Old Cars, There are a lot of USA model Chevs in this country
almost all individually imported by someone. Yes they just as popular here
as anywhere.

I own 3 Convertibles waiting resto all Bel Airs 55-56-57 Been too busy to
start on the restos for past 10 years. Maybe 2001 will be the year !! I
dont
know if Numbers meen anything , but production Number 13 the 55 Convertible
sits in my shed , does any one Know or own a lower number than whats
stamped
on this cars Plate. I guess number 13
has been a Lucky number for me. I often wonder what happened to 1 Thru 12?

However your readers may not realised it costs us all more than double in
Dollars just to buy & pay for anything obtained from the USA ( our Dollar
only buys on average around 52 cents USA Dollars) Plus Duty & Tax. Plus
Freight Costs, The reason some of you Yanks sometimes think things are real
expensive down here when you get to see some Australian Auto Traders or
Classic Magazines & check out the prices asked.

Many Australians can be found every week in the USA looking for Cars Parts
etc.
I have been going to the SEMA Show For a long time Now ( since it was in
CA)
missed this years show. Have lots of good friends I have met along the way
over the years in the states. Some read your column. G'Day to all. Merry
Xmas.

Hi Bob,

Since I have a '57 I can only talk with certainty about that year, but some
of the NOS parts look a lot different from the modern replacements. For
instance, the aluminum side inserts looked different, the glass fuel filter
elements were different; the sun visors had a smaller welt and shinier end
clips; the hood and trunk vees were a different color of gold; the trunk
vee
was a wider angle; the gold Bel Air grilles were a different color of gold;
the Bel Air fender louvers were a different color of gold; the Bel Air
"Chevrolet" scripts and side emblems were not only a duller finish, but
were
made of different material; the rocker mouldings were heavier gauge metal;
the water pump didn't have a plug on the top surface; the full wheel covers
were a bluer shade of silver; the mufflers look and sound different than
are
now available; the radiator cap had a different design; the radio spark
suppression condensers looked different; the floor mats looked different,
the windshield wiper blades looked different; the aluminum dash trim fit
better (especially at the right corner); the horn cap emblem fit better;
the
heater hoses were marked differently. And on, and on, and on.

I'm sure there are a BUNCH more differences that I'm not thinking of right
now. Some items are the same or better, though. For instance any chrome
item made by Gene Smith looks better than the original piece did. Some
things are important and some are less so. Also, all judging is not the
same. Some items that YOU know to be wrong may be missed by the judges.
It's good this time, but maybe not so at the next show. Those same judges
can also miss a correct part, never having seen one. You never know who
the
judges are, or what they know or are looking for. It's possible to get
silly with "correctness", though. It all depends on your budget. But
remember, for most of us this is just a hobby. Get what makes you happy.
There will always be someone with a more correct car!

The short answer to your question is yes. NOS parts do make a difference.
Just not ALL of them.

Let me start by saying that I have always been in love with the 1957
Chevrolet. I have been searching for years for the perfect one. Since all
the perfect ones are out of my price range I settled for one not so
perfect. It is a Belair 4 door with a 2 barrel V8. It also has a 3 speed
transmission. The 57 has a lot of rust which I intend to repair myself.
When it comes to the 1957 Chevrolet I believe that it should look as it did
the day it rolled off the assembly line. All of the 57s I looked at would
surely need new sheet metal to be made anew. So instead of paying high
dollars for bondo and missing parts I bought a rust bucket. The car is
complete minus the radiator, carb., fan, water pump, generator, and glove
box cover. I believe the car was a steal for only $250.00. I would
appreciate any information that you could share. I would like to know how
to identify whether the engine is a 265 or 283 c.i.d. Where do I find the
information that tells me the original color and interior. I would also
like to know where the best place is to buy parts.
Thanks for your time, Danny Whitaker
