Bob- please post to the list if one goes out before New Years.

Just a thought for those of you who (like me) think the
REAL millennium begins THIS new years eve....

Dear Bob,

These prices are unrealistic -- very few people will pay $40,000 and up for
these Chevys unless they're rich. What happened to the $10-15,000 range?

John Bresnik

Editor's note. There has been some very expensive cars listed. If you
have a car for sale please send it in. My guess is that cheaper cars sell
faster than expensive ones. List members, what are your feelings about
seeing expensive cars for sale?

Bob,

I heard that you can put GM S10 or S15 small truck disc brakes an my 57
Chevy using the original front spindles.

My questions to the group are:

What year?
What wheel bearings?
What dust covers are used?
What brackets hold the calipers?

I have a 57 210 Townsman Wagon.

Thanks,

Bob,
I received a letter from the historical folks at A.O. Smith yesterday. It
was confirmed that A.O. Smith made all the two piece frames for Chevrolet.
The one piece designs were made by Chevrolet themselves at some plants.
The A.O. Smith frames were shipped from one of two plants directly to the
Chevrolet plants for final assembly (specific bracket welding). This was
the setup as far back as 1954 and thru 1958. A.O. Smith made all the
frames
for the Corvette during these years.

I did receive some other information from a separate source that says, at
least after 1958, that Budd also made one piece frames for Chevrolet along
Chevrolet making some of their own one piece design and with A.O. Smith
still making the two piece frames. So three frame suppliers in the
1958-1964 years it would seem. This information is from Chevrolet in
1964.

Pretty interesting.

"There are 987 Chevy bowties on a 55 Bel Air's dash trim plates." Gee my
eyes are strained. Just kidding. I read it in a publication I have had
for a long time. Just a bit of trivia not many people know. Thought you'd
get a laugh that someone did actually count them. No, I didn't verify this
info.

Happy Holidays!...for Richard and all readers,
I consulted my "vast library"
of 50's videotaped movies and, yes indeed, there
IS a movie with the official opening credit
title "Rock Around the Clock" featuring Bill
Haley and the Comets...the movie is in black
and white and is part of the fabulous Alan Freed
series of rock'n'roll performances thinly
concealed as teenage movies which were released
in the Fifties...the only notable group
included in this one appears to be The
Platters but does have one of my fave '50's actresses,
Lisa Gaye!...watch for Rock retrospective marathons
which is where I taped the Alan Freed series
which I recommend to all fans of the birth of
Rock & Roll!....'57 Chevys Forever! and a groovy

Hi Bob
I thoroughly enjoy the forum you provide and want to wish all the best
this holiday season. I am hoping someone has experience or experimented
with brighter light bulbs for the taillights, turn signals, backup lights,
etc. The bulbs on the latest model cars are so much brighter, possibly
halogens, but I don't want to melt my 56 wagon lenses or burn the car to
the
ground ! Brighter replacement bulb part #'s that work would be of great
interest. Thanks in advance.

I have a couple concerns. First of all, I'm going over the entire brake
system on my 56 Chevy. I have all of the wheel cylinders off and I have
them
disassembled for rebuilding. Question is- What (if anything) do I use as
an
assembly lube? Brake fluid won't go into the system until spring. Or do
i

just assemble the wheel cylinders dry? >>

Wyatt, DO NOT assemble your wheel cylinders DRY!!!!!!!! Use Clean brake
fluid! put some on the rubber cups, (be sure & get the edges) & the inside
of
each wheel cylinder. Be sure you completely assemble them, including the
rubber dust covers! Richard

Hi Bob,

Seasons Greetings, I'd Like to wish everyone on the list
A Happy Holiday, A Very Merry Christmas & A Happy New Years.

I believe it's been almost 3 years now I've been a member here on Bob's
List
& I still look forward to receiving it every week. Thanks Bob For creating
this list & putting all the hard work you do into it & keeping it going
strong :o) .

Since I've joined the Staff at ChevyTalk.com it doesn't leave me much time

to reply too often to the list here. Sorry About that Bob. However I still
read & keep up with the current events of the list. Sometimes I reply to
members of the list directly when they are in need of help with a problem
that I may have an answer to.

As another year comes to an end I hope everyone had a safe & prosperous
year.
May this coming year bring everyone health, happiness & a Whole Lot of
Cruising in that Classic Chevy Of Yours !!!!

does anyone on the list have any info on the durability of the 3 speed
manuals that came on these cars. Are they very strong or would my 400hp
327
tear one apart? I am mainly just tired or having to have "tractor" gears
to
have a decent takeoff in first with my close ratio muncie. It gets
expensive
with 4:11's on the highway all the time and to get good economy with some
3.08's its like taking off in 2nd. literally the gear reduction is the
same
as was the stock second gear ratio with the three speed. Ouch!

thanks

I have been thinking for some time about taking a 4-dr sedan ( or
hardtop ) and cutting the roof out just inside the rain gutter area, and
making a snaptop like a Jeep has to keep out ( most ) of the rain. I have 3

sedans currently available, one which is a prime candidate for this
project,
and also a friend has a 4-dr hardtop shell with no roof or windshield
frame(
he had to have it cut off to fix another one of his 4-dr hardtops in better

shape), so that could be used to make a fair-weather no-top car as well.
So,
I was wondering, as a convertible needs that extra X for stiffness, whether

anyone has repro'ed one, or there are any specs available for making one,
and
whether the convertible windshield frame has been reproduced or not. That
isn't critical, but the X-member definitely is! As I'm now the owner of my
own home as of Nov. '99, I can think about doing some of these off-the-wall

projects I've dreamed up over the years but never had the place or chance
to
do it. I know I'll never make the kind of money to ever afford even a nice
driver '57 ragtop, so I'm gonna have to settle for a more customized
version
if I ever want an open-air Chevy of my favorite vintage. Anyone done this
to
a 4-dr sedan or Hardtop, please email me off-list. I'm also into AMC cars
such as Gremlins , Javelins, and Pacers, so if you run across any good
parts
or cars, let me know! Thanks, and y'all have a great Holiday season.

Hi All and Seasons Greetings. Thanks Bob for this list. Enjoyed your open
house in Oct. Would like feed back from folks who've done the 700 swap
from
a 350. I know I'll move the cross member back and shorten the drive shaft.
Will
my current th-350 column shift rod work? Will the 700 detent cable attach
to
the existing 350 bracket and E-brock carb? Do I NEED to hook up the lock-up

torque converter right now? Can I drive without it for now without harming
the trans? Will my 350 CCI center mounts work with the 700? Any and all
feedback sincerely appreciated. Usually I ask these questions AFTER I've
gotten screwed up. Thought I'd try it beforehand for a change. Will be
buying
and installing the 700 next week in place of the built 350. Thanks in
advance
for all replies.
