I have a 57 Chevy. When I bought it I had to replace the Temp gauge with a
rebuilt one which has been checked out to be ok. I still cannot get the
gauge to work correctly. I have tried 2 different sending units and the
wiring has been redone with the help of April57. The gauge does the same
thing every time-It works but after about 3-5 minutes the gauge goes to hot
and stays there. The engine is not hot-about 175. I am at a loss as to why
this happens-It acts like the gauge and the sending unit are not speaking
the same language. Anyone had any experience with this? Help!

Regarding: Fuel Sending Unit

Please respond with an e-mail.

I have my system wired as follows: Hot wire runs to rear of fuel gauge &
gauge is grounded, sending unit runs relay lead to gauge & sending unit is
grounded. Gauge is effective, as is sending unit. I thought potentially a
wire was faulty so I wired it all direct and smoked my sending unit. Anyone

have hints or suggestions on how to make this work?

Thanks,

Harry

Of coarse you should continue to publish all the cars you find. Why
limit the higher priced cars? As always, these cars continue to
escalate in price and it is good to see what people are asking.
Thanks for your work. Hope everybody had a great Holiday season.

Hello to all list members, and Happy New Year.
I have to reply to the following request for info.
"Would like feed back from folks who've done the 700 swap
from a 350. I know I'll move the cross member back and shorten the drive
shaft.
Will my current th-350 column shift rod work? Will the 700 detent cable
attach
to the existing 350 bracket and E-brock carb? Do I NEED to hook up the
lock-up

torque converter right now? Can I drive without it for now without harming
the trans? Will my 350 CCI center mounts work with the 700? Any and all
feedback sincerely appreciated. Usually I ask these questions AFTER I've
gotten screwed up. Thought I'd try it beforehand for a change. Will be
buying
and installing the 700 next week in place of the built 350. " Please don't
install your 700 without contacting Steve Holmes @ Bowtie Overdrives. The
answers to your basic questions regarding TV cable connection and
especially
your lock up torque converter is "NO". You cannot run the 700 without the
lock up converter working, it creates excess heat build up and can burn the

trans up in no time at all. How do I know? Well, I almost demolished mine.
I
was lucky that I contacted bowtie overdrives and took my car there just
last
week. This business does nothing but auto overdrive transmissions -
building,
installation, set-up adjustments, etc. and are very helpful. They do have a

web site at www.bowtieoverdrives.com. Check it out and give them a call.
Steve Holmes is the owner but he is not there very often. His people are
likewise as helpful, talk to Duane Smith the shop foreman. Call them (760)
947-5240 they are located in Victorville/Hesperia, CA. You can also e mail
them at: dr700r4@earthlink.net -
The 700R4 trans is a very good idea if set-up properly. These are the only
people that can get you set up correctly. They build and install and are
very
much into the tech stuff about these very complex transmissions. Very
customer oriented. They test drive every car with the owner before and
after
the installation, or set-up, to be sure that the operation is understood.
Tell them Jim Baylor - with the Blue '57 Chevy 2 dr. Wagon told you about
them.

Hi Bob,

Regarding high priced cars for sale on list, I"m not bothered by them
even though I could never afford one or really care to. I myself enjoy
the buildup and eventually cruising in something I put together. I'm
also used to seeing high prices on cars (albeit new) as I'm a technician at
a local
Cadillac dealership.

In regards to Lenny's question regarding our tri 5's both my 55 210
2dr sedan and my wife s 57 210 2dr sedan are modified i.e. different
engines, trans, interiors.
bodies remain original except for color choices.

While I'm rambling I would like to take this chance to thank Bob for
this list and to wish all members and their families a safe and
prosperous NEW YEAR.

In regards to expensive cars, twenty years ago I would have thought
$40,000.00 was too much for a third car also. It's very easy to put a small
fortune into restoring one of these cars. So if you wish to sell it what
are
you suppose to do, give it away? From what I've seen around here there's
plenty to go around at all prices. Hobbies are very expensive and there's
people out there spending alot of time, effort and money restoring and
building these cars.( The way they want them to look). It's very easy buying
one at $2000-$3000 and then dumping in another $10,000-$15,000 in parts
alone not to mention shop fees. Have you had a new 1/4 panel welded in
lately? Paint and body work of any kind of quality $6000-$8000. Interior?
How long does it take for GM to make a new chevy with a window sticker of
$30,000. I'am building a new 56 that's going to take at least a couple
years
and I'd much rather have the one I'am building. Manufactured in Phoenix,Az.
USA. By a choosen few!!

G,Day Bob. Like John Breswick, I have been checking the asking prices for
some of the cars guys send in for you too list for sale.

It seems like you have a lot of Dreamers out there !!!!!! . No doubt a lot
of cars are restored correctly, but only some are worth the asking price,
then it is also a case of supply & demand. Latterly it seems that some
dude
asks say 25 Grand for a 4 door
sedan with a decent Paint Job , new interior , Motor rebuild & a set of
white walls, then all of a sudden up pops a whole bunch of similar cars for
sale all around the same price.

If you want to sell your car then dont dream or think yours is worth as
much
as some other car you have seen listed. Be realistic, and offer it at a
reasonable price & I am sure you will get phone calls & buyers Knocking on
your door. Every one of us knows how much our cars cost us to buy or
restore, no one wants to take a loss, but if you count man hours working on
you own project times a dollar value. then you can not expect to get some
of
the ridiculous prices we are all seeing latterly. Dealers are another
reason
why some cars are high priced also, but hey they usually have the bucks &
know you "Just Gotta have that car" right.

There is no set price for any cars, even so called Guides are only that A
Guide to so called market average price. These cars like any are only
worth
what someone is willing to pay. I have seen guys asking you why they have
not had any buyers , inquiries or sale,
boy some of these people must be on something else besides this Planet
earth.

Convertibles, Coupes, Nomad's will always fetch Good to High Bucks if in
any
condition from a Restorable to a Driver to a Restored Points Car. I bet
almost every reasonable priced 55-57 chev priced between $3500 - $15,ooo
sells real easy , you only have to check the photo adds in say Trader
online
& others to realize there are cars out there for sale in this price range
that most can find & afford to buy , Drive & enjoy the thrill of owning one
.

I will stick my nose out here and bet some people are not logging on to
this
site as much as usual because the cars listed in the last six months are
priced way above what a average person expects to pay !!!!! There still
are
some good buys out there all over the USA but you gotta do some hunting..
Last my advise is never buy a car off the net, from Photos alone, unless
the
seller agrees in writing to refund your money in full if it is not as good
as made out to be when you go to collect it.. Boy those photos make a lot
of
cars look like Factory Fresh.. Photos dont show, Bondo, Overspray Paint &
hidden Rust. or previous Accident Damage, If you going to pay as much or
more for a Nice 55-57 than a new everyday car then you better look real
hard.

How many times have you seen some guy place a advert.. this car is totally
original, genuine miles...then says it has had a Repaint & Retrim etc !!!!!
am I missing something here ? Whats wrong with telling a buyer the honest
truth for a change ?

Well have blown my horn for long enough, Time to get off line, Hope I have
not offended anyone with my comments, How about all you Dreamers out there
make 2001 a more realistic year for all Bobs readers & all the rest of us
for that matter.

Almost forgot HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL YOU READERS !!!!
Regards. John Cain. Downunder.

Hi Bob and all. Regarding Lenny Schaeffer's question
regarding weekend events, summer 2001. Ya' can't
miss C.C.I's meets in Buffalo N.Y.,July 18 - 22, and in
Columbus Oh., August 7 - 12th ! If you've never been to
the Woodward Dream Cruise, 3rd weekend in Aug. you
need to take that in, at least once in your lifetime. If this
isn't enough, be really adventurous and attend Canadian
Classic Chevys, 'Family Reunion', Aug 3 - 5. If enjoyment
of you classic is what you are about, you have to do the
Canadian thing, where your U.S. buck goes soooo much
further. Full details on all of the above available, just ask.

Would

this period, although many people will say that they were really not GOOD
movies! And they were just cheapy Budget movies. Whatever they call them,
I
thought they were GOOD movies! "Go, Johnny, GO" is another good one! Had

Dear Bob,

These prices are unrealistic -- very few people will pay $40,000 and up
for
these Chevys unless they're rich. What happened to the $10-15,000 range?

John Bresnik
Escondido, CA

Editor's note. There has been some very expensive cars listed. If you
have a car for sale please send it in. My guess is that cheaper cars sell
faster than expensive ones. List members, what are your feelings about
seeing expensive cars for sale?

BOB
--------------- >>
Bob, I totally agree with John ! All I can say for these people who ask
such
ridiculously HIGH prices for their classic Chevys is: ROTS A RUCK! You can

still buy a very nicely restored Classic Chevy 2 dr. hdtp. for around
$20,000
& a nicer older restoration for around $12-18,000 All you have to do is
LOOK ! There is absolutely no need to pay some of these crazy prices that
SOME people are asking for their cars! Richard

When someone restores a classic, many times they reach a point of "no
return" on their investment.(funds invested will not return profit or
break even point) A car is worth only what the market will bear, no
more, regardless of what has been invested in it. Get real with your
prices,or be prepared to sit on your car for a long time. Thanks, Bob,
for your hard work, and wishing all a healthy, happy new year.

this past September. This man treated me VERY nice. Anyone looking for 5 6

For the poll: Put me down as owning a modified
vehicle ('55 Sedan Delivery w/350/400TH). Not to say
that I don't love and appreciate stockers. I enjoy
taking a "modified" that someone else started and keep
going with it, I just don't have the heart to be the
first to start modifying a total or very close
stocker. That is the reason I said I would prefer to

<< List members, what are your feelings about

I'm all for seeing these cars. First, and most important, I'm looking for
a
real nice 55, and I expect to pay more than $20K for it. Second, most of
these people are, believe it or not, selling these cars at a loss! I don't

care what kind of car it is, doing a frame off restoration is expensive,
and
most people who do so will find themselves upside down when it comes time
to
sell. In other words, a lot of these high dollar cars are bargains!
Finally, to the extent these ads are a barometer of the market, it's nice
to
know where the top is, as well as the bottom. Let's see more high dollar
ads! And if someone has a black or primer 55 with a 4 speed and none of
that billet/digital/tilt wheel stuff--a nostalgia car--please let me know.

Thanks for all your hard work, Bob, and Happy New Year!

Hi Bob

In response to John comments about unrealistic prices, I can say that I
think
the shoebox is TRENDY right now and therefore can be more expensive than in

the past. Also I know my Own vehicle was just appraised at OVER 40K,with
over
$10,000 in chrome alone, so these cars aren't your daddy's cars anymore!

Prices for EVERY classic or custom is outrageous now- I strongly suggest
getting a 'before' car and having it restored the way YOU like it-

It may cost a bit more in the long run, but it will be just what you asked
for.

Happy New Year everyone

Hi Bob, I saw your note about the 'expensive' and to most OVERPRICED
tri-5's. I think to advertise for these outrageous prices is a waste of
your time to list and a waste of my time to read. However, I do like the
way you listed the cars in the last newsletter, from the cheapest to the
most expensive. That way when the ads get too pricy, I can go back to
watching football. I would suggest one other thing if it's not too much
work, always list the cars in chronological order. I'm mostly interested
in 57 cars and things and can save a lot of time by being able to go
straight to the 57 ads.
NOTE: I saw one advertiser in your last ad listing a 2 door HT car for
sale for about $35,000. He made the statement that "these cars will triple
in price in the next 10 years". IF HE BELIEVES THAT, HE WOULD KEEP EVERY
CAR HE HAS AND BUY EVER CAR HE SEES. He really does not believe that and
neither do you nor I. In fact, if the economy continues to slide, as most
economist predict, there will be a lot of cars on the market for sale at
much cheaper prices. There are a lot of people in over their heads. I
practice what Larry Berkett (sp?) teaches, get out of debt and stay out of
debt. Thanks be to 'GOD', my wife and I have been debt free for the past 6
years, except for the typical light, water, and tax bills. We have adopted
the principle that if we can't pay cash for something, then we don't need
it.
Thanks again Bob for you dedicated work and I have enjoyed you site for
another year. May GOD bless you and your family and all our tri-5 family
members in the coming New Year. Thanks and as always remember 'GOD is
