Thanks Bob for providing a great service in your website. My 18 year old
son
and I just completed his 57 2 dr Bel Air sedan. We used a 1992 Dodge
Dakota
pickup frt suspension clip, the 1 piece 57 frame slides right inside the
Dakota frame rails. The advantage is disc brakes and rack& pinion steering.

The rear end is a 9" Ford w/3.90 gears and a trac lok unit. We pocketed the

springs into the underside of the frame. Power comes from a 502 aluminum
head big block with a 700R4 trans. The car is painted Viper yellow.
We have some extra parts and some that we picked up on a trip to Nevada.
Please post them for sale.

57 283 4 Brl stickshift complete motor, needs rebuild $700 no air
cleaner or generator
57 1 piece frame, blasted and primed, never hit $1250
57 complete front sheetmetal clip, no bumper $1500
57 hood $100
55 & 57 inner and outer front fenders $75 and up
55 & 56 decklids $85 each
55 4 dr sedan quarter panels, includes inner trunk panels $125 each
55-57 complete front and rear suspensions $125 each

Bob,
I want to start off by thanking you for all your hard work
keeping the list going. I'm always anxious for the next Chevy list to
come. Alot of great information is passed along here. I enjoy learning
from the questions that are asked concerning problems people are having,
unfortunately not all the answers to the questions are shared with the
rest of us on the list, would it be possible for the concerned party to
pass along the correct or best fix to the problem to the rest of us on
the list. That information will probably come in handy one day to help
one of us or someone we know in a similar situation.

Thanks

Ref the tri tech valve stems in the shape of the bow tie

Danchucks carried them in their latest catalog part # 1599, page 33 cost
? as the price catalog says discontinued but they did have a few still in
stock.

You might also try Pioneer Classic in Phoenix at (602) 993-5999. They
had a few sets last time I looked.

Tri Tech did fold and is out of business. Drats. If the above doesn't
pan out re-post and I have one more source for you.
TriTech also did the third brake light in the trunk's gold V.

Ref CCI:
Many companies offer a membership type discount, Harmon's and CCI but at
least CCI includes a monthly magazine.
I've never been able to locate that book except through CCI. Many
companies take a hit on shipping (after factoring in the insurance cost
of boxes, labor to pack etc) so some won't lower a price based on volume
(or lack of it).

The Silver Car Auction is in the Phoenix area this week as is the Kruse
Auction. It will be interesting to see what the cars actually bring sell
for to "knowledgeable buyers with cash in their pockets".

Hello Everyone,

Let me start off by saying WOW! I got a much bigger response when I said a
few negative things about CCI. I would just like to give some advice to
everyone on this list, before you buy anything from anybody, post it on
this list you might get surprised. I only found the "How to Restore Your 57
Chevy" book in two catalogs. I got 5 responses from "the small guys" and
all five beat CCI price and their postage rate.

I use Danchuk exclusively for over 10 years. When they charged me a
restocking fee it caused me to start looking else where. CCI and Danchuk
are fine big companies and I might buy from them again but before I do I
will look around. If your like me you need to make every penny count.

Thanks to everyone on this list it has helped me time and time again.

Hi Bob,

In response to JWargowski's question about a small parts vibrator that
Eastwood sells, If the system comes with ceramistones and uses water as a
lubricant, it will clean rust off metal.

I worked at a Tool and Die shop for years, and this is a method they used
to
clean rust and burrs off stamped metal parts. They were preparing the parts
for plating. This shop had an Ultra-sonic tank that cleaned Aluminum wheels
(I'm sorry - Alloys) REAL good.

Hope this was the answer they were looking for? Not having seen the
Eastwood
system, I'm not sure what's offered in it?

Thanks. RJ

To Charlie Shew, Hey Charlie, I totally agree with you on service these
days. It seems most everyone wants the $$$$$$$$, but WHERE is the
SERVICE????? Yeah, Cliff is great & there are other vendors out there like

Cliff if he doesn't have your part. I think people like CARS & CCI are
really cutting their own throats, because there is a lot of competition out

there & CCI is rarely cheaper than anyone else. I buy 99% of my parts
elsewhere. Their shipping is also overpriced. It seems so many just have
to
make those extra bucks on shipping these days, huh??? Richard

Bob & List members,
First of all, Happy New Year to everyone!!!
Second, I am looking to put lowered spindles in my 55' Nomad. I see that
there are a few different types as well as a range of prices. I noticed
that
some have the disc brake brackets separate from the spindle and some are
one
piece. Which is better? I would think the one piece, but I want to make
sure.
I was wondering if anyone has used the 'Fatman' spindles? I believe they
are
the cheapest in price($250). I look forward to everyone's answers.
I also agree with Kim and Paul. You should send your answers to Bob's
List
as well as the person asking the question. There have been some questions
asked on here that I was hoping to read replies to and never seen any. The
idea of this list is to share our knowledge with each other. I'm sure there

isn't anyone on the list that knows it all. I've been working on 55-57
Chevys
for 25 years, but I have learned quite a bit since being on Bob's List. I'm

sure many others can say the same thing.
As always, keep up the good work Bob!
Thanks,
Warren

Kim,

If your friend wants to lower his car at the same time, Fatman Fabrications

carries dropped spindles that are machined to use late model S-10 Blazer
rotors and calipers. These plus a GM dual master cylinder and a pressure
regulator to vary the pressure from the front to the back brakes, brake
hoses, lines, etc. are what we did to my '56 about six years ago. Everything

has worked fine in about 12,000 miles of driving. It stops much better and
handles better with the two inch drop plus one more inch drop by cutting
one
coil from the front springs. This still gives a good ride.

Fatman Fabrications advertises in most of the car magazines and is located
in
Charlotte, North Carolina. Their website is at:www.fatmanfab.com.

Good luck to your friend

I like the idea of posting the fixit's or advice for everybody's viewing.
I'm
in the process of restoration of my '56 and have a long way to go. I always

save articles or information knowing someday I will need them. Many times I

have seen questions on this list hoping for the answer myself. And I've
seen
many different answers to the same question. Us newbies especially benefit
from other's experiences. So I say post it for all.

To my San Jose bud, Vern Goode:

The Eastwood Company sells a glass polishing abrasive called "Rhodite" with
which I have had good experience on a '66 Chevy II windshield that was
badly
scratched with a bladeless wiper arm. They sell a kit that contains the
compound and polishing pads that you can chuck in an angle grinder or
Dremel
tool (with a speed reducer). It will take out any scratch that is not so
deep it causes a major "snag" on your fingernail as you scrape across it.

Bob,

I still have several 56' Chevy parts that I need to sell. I will part
out a 56' Chevy 265 V-8 if necessary, three distributors, two factory
rebuilt generators, Vacuum wiper motor, & carburetors. I will accept
the best offer for all or part. I also have back issues of CCI that I
am selling for $3.00 each or make an offer for all I have left. I need
to get rid of these as I plan on moving. No reasonable offer refused.
I will consider delivering in Texas.

Bob, this is in response to Charlie Shew's "soap box" email regarding
C.A.R.S. service, I have found their service quite the opposite and after
reading Mr. Shew's comments felt it only fair to contact C.A.R.S. and the
person who I've dealt with over the past 2 years and thousands of dollars
later (I am redoing a 55 Nomad). I copied and faxed him Mr. Shew's email,
lets see if C.A.R.S. responds. I was told that those shipping charges were

not necessary correct and also that the book was back ordered. I also
passed
on Bob Fords email address. All I can say is emails are great but
sometimes
a "live" conversation is needed.

By the way good luck to Mr. Shew and his 57 project.

Editor's note. If C.A.R.S. responds, I will include it on this list. I
want to give everyone their say.

Thanks very much for the list Bob.
I am brand new to the list, but you appear to be asking members about
their cars, plans, and feelings about stock versus modified.
My wife and I just bought a seventies restoration 57 Nomad that has been
in storage for about 15 years. It's a 20/20 car that has all its parts,
but has suffered some from storage in a damp garage. We're having a lot
of fun cleaning it up. It is matador red and white with the red and black
interior, and has the
283/4brl with an automatic. We really like driving it and prefer modified
to stock because thats how
we knew them back in the sixties in High School.
It may be naive, but we think we can modify without doing anything that
would keep a future buyer from doing a full restoration.
I expect we'll be talking to folks on the list quite a bit and will pass
on any good tips we have.

A question I had right off was how big a tire can I cram into that back
fender well. If any body else is curious, we put P255/60R15 on 15X7
American Racing Torq Thrust II wheels on the stock axle. They look great
and just
fit.

We are from Richmond, CA. (re: the message regarding the 57 Nomad bought
out of storage)
Regards,

Jim
