Hello Bob,

The day your last list came out and carried comments from Herb Spies about
my website and the literature CD I am offering the web server I was using
for the site crashed and hasn't come back on line yet. I have therefore
mirrored the 1955 - 1957 web site on two other servers to make sure if this
happens again there will be availability to our visitors. These mirror
sites
are at:

http://classicchevys.bigsitecity.com/ and
http://classicchevys.megalow.com/

I'd like to apologize to those folks that tried to go to Classic-Chevys.com
and found the website offline.

Bob,
I will soon be putting a 350/700R4 in my '56 Nomad and would like to sell
my stock 265 2V carb w/cast iron Powerglide. I am not sure what would be a
fair price to ask for them? The engine and transmission were rebuilt 2800
miles ago and are in great shape. If any of the list members would have
interest in them or would know what they soul sell for I would appreciate
them contacting me. Thanks for the great service you provide for all of us

At an auction a car was up for sale. The auctioneer mentioned that the
car was being sold with a salvage title but it was "okay". Supposedly
the owner had the car stolen and when it was recovered the title had to
be marked as salvaged.

This strikes me as odd since that would mean a bunch of cars in that
state would end up with salvage titles each year. The only think I could
think of was maybe the insurance company wrote off the car as being
junked and the owner restored the car back whole again after it was
recovered, which would mean to me that the car was in deed properly
marked as salvaged.

Have any of you ever run across this stolen-salvage title story?

Editor's note. A good body shop could tell you if the car had been wrecked
and rebuilt.

AL, ARE YOU SURE THAT THE ENGINE THAT YOU MENTIONED IS NOT A 327?
THE 283 COME WITH A 3.875 BORE, BUT THE 327 ALSO HAD THE VENT TUBE BEHIND
THE DISTRIBUTOR.
HERE IS THE FORMULA FOR DETERMINING CUBIC INCHES:

.07854 X BORE X BORE X STROKE X NO. OF CYLINDERS.

THE 283 HAD A BORE OF 3.875 AND A STROKE OF 3.00 INCHES.

THE 327 HAD A BORE OF 4.00 INCHES AND A STROKE OF 3.25 INCHES.

IF YOU DO THE MATH, IF YOU HAVE A BORE OF 4.00 INCHES AND A STROKE OF 3.00
INCHES YOU WOULD HAVE A 302 CUBIC INCH ENGINE.

IF YOU CAN SEND ME THE NUMBERS FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT OF THE BLOCK
JUST IN FRONT OF THE HEAD, I WILL TRY TO HELP YOU IDENTIFY YOUR ENGINE.

THANKS, WADE WATTS

One might think, after looking at recent ads for tri-fives, that there are
not any good, solid affordable cars left. I am fortunate to live in the
arrid, west Texas area and have owned and traded several great old cars
from this area. Among them over a half dozen 55 to 57 Chevys.
Tinkering with and trading old cars is my hobby and I love what I do. If
any of your readers is looking for a good, solid, car at an affordable
price, give me a shout. I may be able to find what you are looking for.
I'll be as honest and up front with you as I can be about the condition of
the car. I don't mess with bondo buckets or wrecks. The price will reflect
the car's overall condition.
Currently I have a 1955 Chevy 150 2 door sedan for sale. It is a clean,
super solid and straight car from New Mexico. The last owner and the New
Mexico title both state it's mileage to be 31,000 though I will not swear
it is true due to a lack of documentation. 6cyl. 3 spd, and very original.
Recent paint and interior. I'm asking $11,500 and would be glad to email
photos and more info.
Thanks Bob. Keep up the good work.

The place you are looking for was Chevy Craft in Lubbock, TX. They no
longer exist. The very offensive owner of that establishment closed the
doors and actioned everything off in September of '99. You might call Ed
at
M&M Classic Chevy in Lubbock , sorry I don't have their phone number, he
was
at teh auction and may know who ended up with the stamping machine.

Allegedly the stamping machine was an original one used by Chevrolet so it
produced tags that could not be told from original. I had a lengthy phone
discussion about these tags and the machine with the owner of Chevy Craft a
few years ago. The only valuable information I acquired from him was about
special paint code stampings. I was going to list these stamping but just
realized I may have lost the notes I made while talking to him.

I posted these stampings a couple of years ago to this list. Does anyone
still have that message? If so, could you shoot me a copy? If I can find
it again I'll write it down in my Judging and Restoration Guidelines

Hmm - so you're looking for the names of the smaller Cadillac and Lincoln
models
marketed after the 1950's, eh?

I would say you must likely be thinking of the Cadillac Cimaron (a slightly
dolled-up Chevy Cavalier with the 2.8 liter V6) and the Lincoln Versailes
(based
on the Fairmont/Zepher or "Fox" platform). The passing of neither will be
mourned to any great extent. Please forgive any possible spelling errors -
I
haven't seen these names in print in a while -

G'Day Bob. Boy Jerry & Janet Mull Really took us back in time !!! ( for
those that can remember...the good old days) . Was the same thing down here
in Australia in the 40's...50's...60's some names , places'shows etc we
remember, growing up after WW 11. till the late sixty's, then the world
seemed to change in a million different ways, maybe the Vietnam War changed
our way of living who knows, but I think we are now all
Trying too hard too keep up with the Joneses, if you know what I mean. Most
of us should wish we could Bring back the Drug Free days', & have our Kids
want to do things with the family as well as go out & enjoy themself, Seems
like there are too many things for all of us to do today & not enough time
to do even half of them. I guess we all had a share in creating the modern
day, so now we are stuck with it !!!!

I grew up a car nut, still am & my kids are too, My young Grand kids are
leaning this way also, What we drive says a lot, have you ever parked your
55-57 someplace &
listened to younger kids today as they pass by ? most still think they
are real cool cars, & most wish
they owned one!! so we must have had something going for us back then &
now...Keep the Dream alive.

Re YOUR QUESTION on Lincoln VERSAILLE,,, about the only thing good or worth
anything on these cars is that real nice Disc Brake Rear end, its narrow &
can be made to fit a lot of Rodded cars & rods.. I bet you have seen them
at
Long Beach & Pomona Swaps & maybe not recognised them.

In answer to AL... the guy that says he has Forged Pistons in his 283 Block
that is 4 inch Diam...But does not Know for sure Cubic Inches... Most 283
Blocks can be bored to 4 inch oversize, but if you are still using a 283
crank then you have approx 301 Cubic inches ( This is what Chevrolet did
in
1967 in Camaros, only they used the 4 inch 327 Block ( 4 inch std on all
327
blocks small or large journal crank tunnels) in 1969
they introduced the z28 Camaro 302, CI 290 HP DZ motor using the new 4
Bolt main HP 4 inch Bore Large Crank tunnel Block in Camaros for Trans Am
Racing against boss 302 Fords. This block they carried on as a 350 4 bolt
main block.

Everything prior to 68 had 2 bolt main bearing caps from GM, If al's block
has a Draft Tube out back, my guess is its a early small journal
327...check
if it has a oil filter adaptor fitted instead of the old long Canister
filter unit. A spin on filter can not be retrofitted without a adaptor on
the small journal blocks, all large journal crank blocks have the regular
spin on type filter.

265-283 & 327 motors up to 1968 also only have the small diam Rod Bolts
Take
a half inch wrench or socket....later large journal 327-307-350-400's have
3/8 diam rod bolts & take a 9/16 wrench or socket
this is a simple easy way to see if you have a early or late block. also
55-57 265 or 283 blocks don't have side mount boss for modern engine
mounts,
if yours has side mount boss then it is a latter than 57 block.

If your still not sure look behind the Drivers side Cylinder Head on the
block above the Flywheel you will see a long GM part number Write this
down,
call into your local Engine Reconditioner who displays a
A.E.R.A. sign and ask him to look up that casting number for you.. he will
have a book or CD on Computer that will identify size & year model of all
Blocks, Cranks, Rods, Heads etc ..they all have some casting numbers on
them
ok. Some how to Restore your 55-57 Chev also show Casting ID numbers etc.

This info may help some of your other readers also Bob.. Keep the good old
times rolling !!!

Regards,.. John Cain.. Downunder.
All blocks have a casting number

Here is a little test of your old car knowledge. Both Caddy and
Continental at one time had a "small car" model. These models were
produced after the 1950s. What was the name of these models?
BOB >>

Bob, Here's a wild stab !!!!!!!! How about the Lincoln "Versaille"
and
the Cadillac "Cimmaron" ???????????????????? Richard

Editor's note. Richard, you got it. I think both of these cars were
flops.
My guess very few were sold. Anyone know for sure? Anyone know if they
were good, bad, or ?? cars.
BOB >>

Bob, I don't know much about the Versaille, but I did do some body work on
a
Cimmaron back in '91 while attending a class in Auto Body repair &
refinishing. If my ANTIQUE MEMORY serves me correctly, that Caddy had a
4-Banger in it for an engine! And as far as the rest of the car goes, it
was
basically a CHEVY with a little fancier interior & Cadillac Emblems!!!!!
etc.
What a FARCE to make a lot of extra money!
I say SHAME on Cadillac for putting out such a car & actually CALLING it a
Cadillac!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-( :-( :-( Richard

engine.
It looks like a 1.5" diameter hole in the top of the block has a rubber

doughnut in it with a .5" diameter hole. A PCV valve might fit nicely.
Should a draft tube be there? I have read about a factory optional
closed crankcase ventilation system, would it have used a PCV valve?

Thanks,
Dennis McGillis"

Dennis, I don't have an answer for the closed crankcase ventilation
questions, but there should be a road draft tube in exactly the spot you
described. They are unique to the 55 block (56 265 tube is different)
and are available in reproduction at many venders. You might try using
the existing set-up and a PCV valve, see how it does.

Editor's note. This brings up an interesting question. Is a PVC valve
better for an engine than a draft tube?

My 55 with a 265 had a similar setup when I first got it from California.
The
previous owner had converted it to a PCV setup and blocked the hole leading
to
the road draft tube. The hole is normally filled with a "ventilator" that
rests inside the engine underneath the intake manifold.

To remove windshield scratches I have used the DuPont Rubbing Compound (the
coarse ,red color) with very good results. It sells for about $2.00 at most
auto stores. Of course the harder you rub the more of the scratch you
remove. DuPont also sells a white polishing compound but that is less
abrasive than the red so I suggest the red. This should be a less expensive
fix to the scratches. It will definitely improve the visibility of the
windshield. I use the compound with a rag only.

Regarding the prices of the chevies: I search the list daily for about two
hours, five days a week. I am not in the market for a car now, however I
like to stay on top of the hobby. I find certain areas of the country
charge tremendous differences in prices for the same car. For example, if
you live the San Francisco, Marin Bay Area, everyone thinks "lots of monied
people." The prices are ridiculous. Just check out a Good Guys car corral
in Pleasanton, Calif. and look at the junk people are TRYING to sell.(I
think some people have too much time on their hands!)If you look in the
Midwestern areas, the prices are more in line with the value of the
vehicle. Further East and I find the prices vary from upstate to the South.
Car auctions may be a guide to the value of the tri-fives, but remember,
the auction companies take a cut, the owner needs his/her share, etc. I
have been to several auctions and have found them not to always be an
honest "appraisal" of the vehicle;(just anxious and often, not informed
buyers) In the end it is what the buyer thinks it is worth-not the owner! I
have found the list very informative and have even sold a vehicle to a
wonderful gentlemen back East. Thanks again- Rick
