AL, ARE YOU SURE THAT THE ENGINE THAT YOU MENTIONED IS NOT A 327?
THE 283 COME WITH A 3.875 BORE, BUT THE 327 ALSO HAD THE VENT TUBE BEHIND
THE DISTRIBUTOR.
HERE IS THE FORMULA FOR DETERMINING CUBIC INCHES:

.7854 X BORE X BORE X STROKE X NO. OF CYLINDERS.

THE 283 HAD A BORE OF 3.875 AND A STROKE OF 3.00 INCHES.

THE 327 HAD A BORE OF 4.00 INCHES AND A STROKE OF 3.25 INCHES.

IF YOU DO THE MATH, IF YOU HAVE A BORE OF 4.00 INCHES AND A STROKE OF 3.00
INCHES YOU WOULD HAVE A 302 CUBIC INCH ENGINE.

IF YOU CAN SEND ME THE NUMBERS FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT OF THE BLOCK
JUST IN FRONT OF THE HEAD, I WILL TRY TO HELP YOU IDENTIFY YOUR ENGINE.

THANKS, WADE WATTS

Bob,

I am just about at the end of my rope and am wondering if anyone along the
list can help me out with an electrical problem I am having with the
lighting
circuitry of my '55.

I took the radio out of my car last week and took it to the shop to have it

repaired. Upon retrieving it from the repair place, I started to install
it
just the way I had it in the car originally. It is a Classic Autosound
USA-4
model radio which has three power leads (four counting the power antenna
which I do not use) coming off the wiring harness. One, the brown wire,
goes
to the digital clock and needs unswitched power. I tried to connect it to
the red screw terminal at the top of the fuse box. When I did, for some
reason I lost power to the headlights and parking lamps.

The radio is now completely installed and working. The brown wire is on
another terminal to the right of the red wire screw terminal at the top and

the other power leads are connected correctly (cost me $80).

The dash lights work, tail lights and all other electrical systems --
heater,
clock, radio, stop lights.

I replaced the light switch and have checked all fuses. Done everything I
can andyet the headlights and parking lamps refuse to light.

I have the Factory Assembly Manual (has a wiring diagram of the light
switch)
and the Passenger Car Shop Manual but the discription of the lighting
circuitry is still pretty vague. I have two red power leads going into the

back of my light switch. Should they be reversed? I know the switch has
power going through it because the rheostat for the dash lights works. I
cleaned the terminals on the dimmer switch (did not replace, yet!). I
simply
do not know what else to do and was wondering if anybody along the list has

ever had a similar problem or maybe someone has a CCI tech paper which can
explain what is wrong. I dread the notion of disconnecting the entire
wiring
harness and do not know how to troubleshoot this system.

Can someone please help me?

David Scott Coker

Editor's note.
DAVID

I am not an expert on electrical problems and some list members may have a
better way to solve
your head light problem but this is what I would do.

You will need 2 wires about 8 feet long ( 1 red and 1 black wire makes this
procedure easy) with
clips on both ends of the black wire and one end of the red wire. The
other end of the red wire
will have a probe on it. Connect the ends with the clips of the red and
black test wires to the
battery after you have removed the battery cables that are now own the
battery. The black wire is
connected to the battery ground and the red wire to the positive battery
terminal.

NEVER TOUCH THESE 2 WIRES TOGETHER

What you need to do is trace the wires for the head lights back to their
source of power, the
battery. I start at the head lights and work backwards. At any point in
this tracing, if the head
lights do not light, you have found the problem.

On each head light socket, you should see a black wire that is connected to
the body. This is the
ground wire.

Remove the socket from the back of the head light and connect the black
test wire to the head
light plug that was connected to the ground wire. Connect the red test
wire to each of the head
light plugs one at a time. The head light should light if it is good.

Plug the head light socket back in but leave a small space that will allow
you to connect the red
probe to the plugs. Connect the black test wire to a clean spot on the
body. Connect the red test
wire to each plug on the head light except the one connected to the ground
wire. The head light
should light. If it does your ground connection is good.

Now trace the head light wire back to the first connection which I think is
at the fender. Remove
the plug in wires from their socket and put the red probe to each of the
wire going to the head
light. The head light should light.

Plug the connection back together and trace the head light wire back to the
next connection,
probably on the fire wall. If possible, separate that connection and put
the red test probe to the
wires that go to the head light. They should light.

These wires should continue on to the dimmer switch. Remove the dimmer
switch and remove
the wires. Put the test probe on each wire going to the dimmer switch.
One wire should make
the head lights light on bright. One wire should make the head lights
light on dim. One wire
should not make the head lights switch light at all. This wire is the
input wire for the dimmer
switch. Put the wires back on the dimmer switch and connect the probe to
the wire that did not
make the head lights light. Push the dimmer switch. It should switch the
head lights from dim to
bright.

Trace this wire back to the light switch. Remove it from the light switch
and attach the red test
wire to this wire. The head lights should light.

There should be a heavy red wire connected to the head light switch. Put
the red test probe on
that terminal and turn on the head lights. They should come on. If not
the switch is bad. If they
do come on, reconnect that wire and trace it back to it next connection
which I think is the
ignition switch. Put the red test probe to that connection. The head
lights should light if the
switch is on.

I hope this helps.
Good Luck

I want to replace my current engine with a new Chevy 350 crate engine for
my 57. However I am in the Army and I do not have the time or space to
build one myself, so the engine needs to be complete. Just bolt in and go
type deal.

The local Chevy dealer will be happy to sell me one for about $5,000 (plus
tax). Can anyone recommend a place where I can get an engine, I am
located at Fort Belvoir, VA.

Thanks
Dave

Editor's note. A local Chevy dealer quoted me a price of $1500 for a 350
crate engine. However, if you want more power, they have crate engines that
go much higher in price.

I am still enjoying your site, even though I sold my 57 and am looking for
a
55 to restore. I still have the following items for sale which I ran
before
but the few bites I got did not follow up. Would appreciate I if you ran
them again. New CARS original red/black 57 2 dr hardtop door panel kit
minus
the left door panel (I messed up the panel when I restore my 57 and CARS
would not sell me a single door panel at the time). The complete kit sells

for about $475.00 but I am asking $200.00 plus shipping.and am open for
offers. I also have a left lower quarter window frame that is show quality

for $75.00 plus shipping. I am located near Austin, TX and can be reached
at

BOB, TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION COMPARING THE ROAD DRAFT TUBE TO THE PVC
VENTING SYSTEM, THE ROAD DRAFT SYSTEM SERVES ONLY AS A VENT FOR EXCAPING
FUMES AND ENGINE PRESSURES AT IDLE, HOWEVER AT ROAD SPEEDS THE DESIGN OF
THE TUBE CREATES A VACUUM PULLING THESE FROM THE ENGINE.
THE PVC SYSTEM IS BETTER BECAUSE IT PULLS THESE SAME GASES FROM THE ENGINE
ALL OF THE TIME AND ALSO INJECTS THEM BACK INTO THE INTAKE TO BE BURNED
WITH THE FUEL.
I WOULD THINK THAT IF YOU LIVE WHERE YOUR CAR IS CHECKED FOR EMISSIONS (WE
ARE NOT THERE YET IN S. C.) THAT YOU WOULD HAVE A BETTER CHANCE PASSING IF
YOUR ENGINE HAS A PVC SYSTEM.

THANKS BOB, AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. WADE

I converted my original 1956 265 V-8 years ago from a draft tube to a PCV
set up for 2 reasons.
1. I was tired of the oil spots in the garage
2. My wife was tired of the smell.
I plugged the draft tube hole with a rubber expansion plug and punched a
hole in the valve cover for the PCV valve. This eliminated both problems.
Looking back, putting a grommet and the PCV in the draft tube location
would be a better set up and less destructive.
MY CLASSIC UPDATE!!!
Pulled the tired ole 265 over New Year's. Bolted a fresh 350 to the
original 3 speed. It took me and a friend less than 20 minutes to put the
engine back in!!! For me that was absolutely amazing as things usually do
not go right the first try. Anyway, this weekend I fire it up!!!

Happy New Year Bob and everyone

Mark,
When a car is stolen, the insurance company must pay the owner for the car

within 30 days. Sometimes, the car shows up after the 30 days and the owner

has been paid. Now the car has been written off as a total loss, thereby
giving it a 'salvage title', regardless of the condition of the car.

Something to think about.....please pass it on.

Hope you won't ever need this, but....

A Life Saving Technique

Let's say it's 6:15 p.m. and you're driving home
(alone of course), after an unusually hard day on
the job. You're really tired, upset and frustrated.

Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your
chest that starts to radiate out into your arm and up
into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the
hospital nearest your home, unfortunately you don't
know if you'll be able to make it that far. What
can you do?

You've been trained in CPR, but the instructor
neglected to tell you how to perform it on yourself.

HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE

(Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart
attack, this article seemed in order.) Without help, the
person whose heart stops beating properly and who
begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left
before losing consciousness. However, these victims
can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and
very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each
cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged,
as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest.
A breath and a cough must be repeated about every
two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the
heart is to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get
oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze
the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing
pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm.
In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital.

Tell as many other people as possible about this,
it could save their lives!
