Bob, I have a reply to the question about "salvage titles" as they relate
to
California. In Ca. any vehicle that has been declared an insurance company
adjuster as a "complete loss" is will be issued a salvage title. This
includes a theft recovery that may have been "paid off" then later found
and
resold OR repurchased by the former owner. A vehicle with a salvage title
may
be a number one condition show car. The other thing about California is
that,
let's say I park my 1974 or newer* vehicle in the garage and don't keep the

license current for a couple years,,,, then I want to reregister it. I now
owe back fees and penalties for the years it sat in the garage.... The fees

may be more than the vehicle is worth! SO the option is, leave the vehicle
in
the garage until it disappears from DMV records (at least five years) then
go
in and start a NEW registration. OR have a local junk yard "sell" you your
vehicle and apply for a "salvage title." Any vehicle purchased from a junk
yard will have a salvage title. As for our Chevys, they are considered
special interests cars so DMV allows us to let them sit without keeping
registration current so don't worry about back fees when re registering
them.
If you have a DMV clerk that tries to apply back fees let them know the are

not to do that and ask for a supervisor. If an insurance adjuster looks at
your damaged Chevy and says it is a total and you keep it DO NOT allow him
(as part of the settlement) to take title or issue a salvage declaration to

DMV. I hope this helps! Also, I encourage everyone to get involved with the

guys that lobby for your rights as car collectors! We have far too many
opponents that would like all our cars to be removed from the road!

I'M IN THE PROCESS OF FINISHING A 57 CHEVY WITH TURBOGLIDE AND IT FEELS
LIKE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING AT TOO HI OF AN RPM AND IT EATS A LOT OF GAS.
ITS A POWER PAC 220 HP. WHO DO YOU RECOMMEND IN PASADENA TO CHECK ON THE
TRANSMISSION AND ENGINE REPAIR?
THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK RE: THE INTERNET ITS GREAT.
BEST REGARDS,
WOLF

Editor's note. I know an excellent place for engine repair in Anaheim but
I don't know any in Pasadena. Turboglide repair is hard to find. I would
call tranny shops in your area and ask. I doubt that the tranny can cause
the engine problems you are talking about.

site, but you don't have the time or knowledge to create one? I'll create
one for you in exchange for 1950 - 1964 Chevrolet literature. As a

David,

About your headlights/parking lights not working... A few suggestions:
1) make sure the front clip/fenders that the headlights/parking lights get
their ground from is grounded to the rest of the car. I have heard of a
guy that rewired his whole car, but still had a problem similar to yours.
He finally found out that the front end (fenders) had a very bad ground.
At one time he had removed the front clip, and had not fully reinstalled
it. I think he added a dedicated wire just to make sure the front end had a
good ground. At least make sure that these lights are grounded to the
frame. As these cars get older a lot of electrical connections become
corroded, lose or just dirty so check the connections. Check all
connections with a multi meter to make sure they are not open. I had a
similar problem with one tail light on my '55, but was able to troubleshoot
it down to a single corroded tail light bezel mounting screw. I had to add
a ground wire between the light socket and the frame to fix it. 2) The
head light switch has its own small fuse mounted on the end of the switch.
I'm not sure if it is for all lights or just the headlights, but replace it
just to make sure.

Good Luck, and email me if you have any questions, Kim

Bob,

Thanks for the tip. I took the car to an auto electric expert and he said
that the contacts on the side of the switch were not making contact. I
took
it back and exchanged it for another. This cost me an additional $30 but
it
was worth it.

Everybody along the list should be aware -- some of these aftermarket
headlamp switches may have bad contacts on the sides of them. If you buy
one, make sure the contacts are touching -- check them out visually with a
magnifying glass.

Honestly, folks, this brief inspection can save you tons of grief trying to

figure out what is wrong with your headlamp wiring. We all live and
learn.

Bob,
It's hard to start a post without first saying
"Thanks" for all the time and hard work you put in for
the benefit of so many. I don't think we could ever
tell you enough!

A list member had a post a month or so ago that
included some web addresses for Tri-5's and one for
later Chevys that had wonderful developmental history
on the SS models. I thought I had book marked them,
and wanted to pass them on to a fellow enthusiast, but
somehow they were lost. (Wish my computer was as
straight-forward as my '55). Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks again, -Delivery Dale

I think Brent has been under the hood too long. Asking Bob to do a Ford
list is akin to asking the democrats to do a republican newsletter!!!

Perhaps Brent should take up the Ford torch for the blue oval lovers, just
as Bob is doing for us Bow-ties.

Keep up the great work Bob!!!

Do you have any idea of how much work is involved in making this list???
And for FREE!!
If anyone is being selfish here it's you!! Why don't you try starting a

Hi Bob,

My experience with PCVs and Draft Tubes was like this.

Not wanting to change the outward appearance of my Orig. 283, I installed a
PCV valve in the Oil fill Tube on the front of my Engine, then ran it back
to the base of my Carb.

I first drilled a hole in Oil fill Tube, screwed the PCV valve in, ran a
rubber hose back to a brass fitting on the base of my 2bbl Carb.

Since I installed the PCV valve under the top Radiator Hose, the Hose helps
hide the PCV valve.

I also kept the Draft Tube in place and working.

Of course finding and drilling a hole in an Original Oil fill Tube could be
a bit costly these days, since these Tubes are hard to find thanks to so
many of the Original Engines getting scrapped, or used as Boat Anchors.

Thanks. RJ

I have a broken valve spring on my 56 210. Someone told me it is possible
to replace that spring
without pulling the head. Could that be true?

JIM
Editor's note. Yes I think it is true. There may be more than one way to
do it. The way I remember is to inject air in the cylinder with a special
fitting that goes in the spark plug hole. Then you can compress the spring
and remove the spring retainer clips. This is from my memory of over 40
years ago so if I am wrong, list members, please tell me.
