I thought you might enjoy the following.
BOB

Bob received a free ticket to the Superbowl from his company.
Unfortunately, when Bob arrived at the stadium he realized the
seat was in the last row in the corner of the stadium. He was closer
to
the Goodyear Blimp than the field! About halfway through the first
quarter,
Bob noticed an empty seat 10 rows off the field right on the 50-yard
line. He
decided to take a chance and made his way through the stadium and around
the
security guards to the empty seat. As he sat down, he asked the
gentleman
sitting next to him, "Excuse me, is anyone sitting here?" The man said
"No."
Very excited to be in such a great seat for the game, Bob said to the
man
next to him, "This is incredible! Who in their right mind would have a
seat like this at the Superbowl and not use it?!" The man replied,
"Well,
actually, the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my
wife, but
she passed away. This is the first Superbowl we haven't been to together
since we got married in 1967." "That's really sad," said Bob, "But still ,
couldn't you find
someone to take the seat? A relative or a close friend?" "No," the
man replied,
"They're all at the funeral.

Yes. You are exactly correct. A couple years ago I had a valve spring
break on a car I was delivering to Florida. A valve spring broke. I
couldn't find a valve spring at any local parts store so I had the car
towed back to Maryland. I ordered a spring and also checked for tools at
an auto parts store. They had two things you need. One is an adapter to
screw into the spark plug hole(they actually had two different sizes in
the package I bought). The other was a valve spring compressor that is
made to attach to the rocker arm stud. There is a different tool for a
six than for a V-8(this car happened to be a 6). I bought both tools. I
changed out the valve spring without removing the head. I used about 30
pounds of pressure to hold the valve up while changing the spring. I
carry these tools with me on cruises-just in case there may be a need for
them in the future.

If you have a problem finding these tools, let me know and I'll dig them
out and see if I can find the part numbers and mfr.

Question to all:
In 1955 Bob Sweikert won the Indy 500 and was awarded the pace car,
a 1955 BelAir Convertable (see:
http://classicchevys.megalow.com/pace/pacecar.htm). What did he do with
that car? As Bob died a few years later it is very hard to find
information on this. I'm hoping some of our member/race fans may have some
information of this.
There were several '55 Convertibles painted as the pace car, but the
actual car that did the pace lap that was given to Bob Sweikert is the one
I'm gathering information on. I hope it ended up in a museum some place
like a lot of other Indy 500 pace cars.

Thanks, Kim

Bob

You mentioned that GM got in trouble for putting Chevy engines in Buicks.
I heard my dad talk about that many years ago but I forgot the story.
Please give me more details. Is that the reason that Buicks now have GM
motors instead of Buick motors?

TOM

I also have forgot the details of the GM motor switch problem. Perhaps a
list member can tell us the full story.

From: INTERNET:Leonardjohn@firestoneindustrial.com,

We appreciate your dedication to the cause, Bob. Thanks! I witnessed and
older mechanic change a valve spring by removing the spark plug and feeding
a bunch of twine-like rope into the cylinder head. The air would work as
long as the seats/valves were good enough. Remember to put that piston
@TDC. Sometimes TDC is all that's necessary for this procedure. I hope
nothing got hammered!
Oh yea, about the Ford guy, not you Bob; I am sure that pointed
comment was only put there to get your reactions. We car folks are usually
passionate about out hobby and usually reactive types. I know I could
never switch brands. They are ugly and it would just be wrong!!!
Thanks again, John Leonard

Bob,

Regarding your note on the question about replacing a broken valve spring
without removing the cylinder head: your memory has not failed you! I did
this
several times when I was attending college and patching-up old clunkers for
transportation.

Possibly a bit more detail would be helpful for Jim Lowery - and any others
confronted with a similar problem. Unless you already have a ready-made
fitting
for pressurizing the cylinder, the easiest way is to take an old spark plug
and
to break out the porcelain. Then, braze a fitting to allow you to connect
to an
air line that you can use to apply pressure (I'd recommend using an oil can
to
shoot a small quantity of SAE-90 or other heavy oil into the cylinder
before
installing the modified plug/fitting - to effect a better seal at the
rings).
Then rotate the engine to a position where both valves are closed. Apply
air
pressure. If you have a regulator that you can adjust to maintain a set
pressure
over time, that's preferred - but not really essential.

Push down on the top of the valve stem to check to assure that the valve is
securely seated (if it isn't, check everything again and apply more air
pressure). Then remove the adjusting nut and rocker arm, compress the
broken
valve spring and remove the keeper and valve keys. Compressing the
replacement
spring so that you can reinstall the keeper and keys may present a little
bit
more of a challenge (since the force required will be higher than the
shorter,
broken one). Depending upon which cylinder is involved, one may have to get
a
bit creative in order to effectively compress the spring as most valve
spring
compressors are designed to work with the head out and on a bench. I found
that
what worked best for me was to use an old valve spring compressor that was
designed for use on L-head engines (bought for about $3 as I recall, and
which I
still have) in combination with a steel bar that fastened to the cylinder
head
using whatever tapped holes were conveniently available.

I hope the above is of some help.

AMEN to Warren's reply to Brent's IDIOTIC request to Bob, to do a Ford
list!
This guy MUST be on drugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No one in their right mind
would
request a Chevy man who devotes so-o-o-o-o-o much time putting out such a
great list to all us Chevy enthusiasts, to put out a Ford list!!!!!!! In

the first place, if he is a Ford owner, what is he doing subscribing to
Bob's
Chevy list ????????????? With a selfish attitude like he has, I am sure
his
request to be deleted from this list will be cheerfully
granted.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hasta la vista Brent!

I have another question concerning the rear axle on my 56 wagon. I don't
know if I should replace the axle shaft bearing seals or not. This axle is

out of a low mile original car. If I do replace the seal, is the bearing
lock ring supplied with the new seal? I think that it gets destroyed
during
bearing removal. Is there a way to see if the original seals are ok
without
removing the bearing?

Hello Bob,
I'd appreciate if you would post this-Thanks for your help.

I have a 2X4 manifold GM 3739653 which checks out to be a 57 Chevy
manifold.
I have two WCFB's that fit on the studs but the base of the carb overhangs
the plenum too much
to where I think it would not work. It appears the plenum should be wider
to
accommodate the channels on the underside of the base of the carb. The
carbs
are supposed to be 57 carbs. I have a single 4 bbl manifold that accepts
either carb fine.
Can someone provide guidance. Thanks
Matt
