Hi all... last week I met yet another person who SWORE that his dad
used to own a genuine 1957 Chevy Impala....

And yes, this guy WAS aware that the Impala was first manufactured
in 1958, but he SWORE that this was a "special" car given to the
retiring manager of the assembly plant, yadda yadda....
Supposedly someone "stole" a few "prototype" Impala emblems out
of the design department and stuck them on an end-of-the-model-run
57....

Okay, I know enough about cars to know there were a FEW "COPO"
non-standard options installed at the plant or by dealerships, but is there
any REAL documentation of a 57 sneaking out the door wearing Impala
trim?

The real "kicker" was the guy a few years ago that swore his dad had a
57 "Impala" with a "prototype" 327 enigine and an automatic shifter in the
floor. "Straight out of the factory", he said....

This is a reply for Dave at Ft. Belvoir....
Dave,
Doesn't Ft. Belvoir still have and Auto Craft Shop that has the space
and tools that you can use or rent? If not I can recommend a shop (The
Restoration Shop) that can build you an engine to your specifications.
It's not too far from you in the Stafford/Fredericksburg area. I'm
working on a '55 Nomad down there that I had them build a small block
400 punched to a 406. I had a more aggressive cam put in it but kept
everything else basically stock. Cost is about $2,500 less core for a
rebuild (a core will cost about $200). Not bad for a balanced engine!
You supply the accessories. You could get a crate motor for that much,
too but you get what they sell you (you don't have the option to specify
your internals, e.g.: Crane, Pete Jackson, Edelbrock, etc.) The
Restoration Shop also has a FULL machine shop that can rebuild heads,
grind cranks, balance, blueprint, hot tank, and a whole bunch more). I
can give you more information if you're interested.

Hey Bob, I don't remember all the details of the story either. But I do
remember it being about Chevy engines in Oldsmobiles. Don't recall anything
about Chevy engines in Buicks. It was in the mid-to-late '70's, a group of
Olds buyers were upset about finding Chevy engines in their Oldsmobiles.
There was legal action against GM, GM lost, and the result was that
disclaimer I've come to know and hate... ..."Chevrolets (or whatever GM
division you please) are equipped with engines produced by GM or suppliers
to GM worldwide". Call me narrow-minded, but if I buy a Chevy, I want a
Chevy engine in it. Today, as it happens, most all the Chevy vehicles I'd
be
interested in run Chevy (now called "GM corporate") engines...the 4.3 V6,
LT-1, LS-1 and LS-1 based engines..etc. Anyway, there's an '89 Caprice
wagon
in my driveway that originally came with a 307 Olds engine and a Turbo 200.
It was powerless, it drank gas, and it was hard to maintain. I also believe
it was the very last vehicle GM built with a carburetor. Four years ago, at
182,000 miles, I pitched the Olds and found a 350 TPI/TH700-R4 out of an
'87
Firebird Formula. Using the GM shop manual, along with the excellent
Jaguars
That Run book "Chevrolet TPI/TBI Engine Swapping"...and with a LOT of
prayer, I did the swap. Factory computer and wiring harness...it flies now,
gets 2-3 MPG better than the Olds ever did, and I can reach the plugs
without standing on my head! I'm convinced that Olds motor never would've
been put in my Chevy had it not been for that legal brouhaha back in the
'70s. Maybe I'm wrong on that, I just don't remember Olds engines in
Chevies
before the suit...but anyway the wagon now has 281,000 miles. I'm hoping to
keep driving it until my '57 Handyman is ready...and what engine am I
putting in it, you ask? A '93 LT-1 with a TH700-R4. I just need to finish
remodeling my house first!

I want to blast and paint the 3speed OD trans before installation into the
car. Question is: what color were these transmissions painted originally?

I had a standard 3speed in the car originally that still had much of the
original paint on it and it looked like red oxide. I know that the rear
axle
third member was painted a red oxide from the factory....

I have noticed that in the past, some members have been
unhappy with various parts dealers like CCI. I would like to personally
thank Cliff Waldon of Cliff's Classic Chevrolet, in Oregon. I have been
looking for glass for our '56 210 2 Door Sedan and Cliff offered to save
shipping by taking it down to the Turlock Swap meet in Turlock, California.
Once, there, he even let us borrow his wagon to get the glass to our
vehicle.

So, members, please do not hesitate to give Cliff a call for
parts & service plus, at a fair price!

Thanks again, Cliff Waldon!

Questions regarding troubles supposedly encountered by GM as a result of
"...putting Chevy engines in Buicks" surfaced in a couple recent postings.
While
I certainly don't have perfect recall on the subject, I think I can add a
little
bit that may jog some memories.

First of all, the use of the same basic engine in more than one line of
vehicles
is nothing new. Even GM was using the 6-cyl. Olds flathead in GMC trucks
around
'36-'38, the '34-'36 LaSalle used an Olds straight eight, the Pontiac V8
was
used in GMC trucks from around '55-'59, etc. GM began using the Chevy 350
cubic
inch V8 in cars badged as other than Chevrolets during the Roger Smith era
starting somewhere around the mid 70's. Actually, as I recall it, the
original
"uproar" concerned use of the Chevy engine in Olds models such as their 88
- not
Buicks. Also, their were some 88's built with the Olds-designed engine,
while
others produced at different plants (and sometimes for different markets)
used
the Chevy-designed engine.

In any event, complaints were made to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
The
allegation was basically that people had purchased an Olds , partially on
the
basis of claims re the use of their Olds "Rocket" V8, but had not received
one.
In the end, I believe a settlement was negotiated and owners who got Olds
cars
w/o the Olds engine got some money back towards a new vehicle purchase or
something similar. Some Buick vehicles did also use the Chevy engine and
may
have been included as well.

In actuality, what had changed was not so much industry practice as much as
the
fact that our society had become more litigious (my opinion anyway)!

In any event, this is why GM cars are now advertised as having GM engines
(rather than one designed or produced by a specific division). This is no
different than what has been done for years by the folks in Dearborn and
Highland Park / Auburn Hills.

Editor's note. This practice also extends to Japan and probably all other
car makers.
A friend of mine has a high mileage Infiniti QX 4. Recently he has needed
a bunch of parts for it.
He found out that he could buy 95 percent of the parts from his Nissan
dealer as the QX4 and the Pathfinder were almost the same SUV. Also the
parts at Infiniti cost about twice as much as the same parts from Nissan.
Of course at Infiniti they have excellent service. They know you by name
and have a free loaner car when yours is in for service. Not so when you
take your Pathfinder in for service. When I bought my Ford Explorer in
1992, I could have got the exact same SUV from Mazda at a higher price. I
think the only thing Mazda did was change the name tag and the price. What
surprised me was that the insurance on a Mazda was more than on the
Explorer.

Bob & List Members,
This makes more sense than the don't buy gas on a certain day routine
that >was going around in April or May. Gasoline Prices! Whoever started
this has a good point.
>-------------------------------
>By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.49 is
cheap. Me too! As it is now $1.58 for regular unleaded. Now that the oil
companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost
of a
gallon of gas is CHEAP at less than $1.50, we need to try an aggressive
response.
With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to
take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down
is
if we don't buy it. But, that's not really a practical option since we
all have come to rely on our cars. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices
if we all act together.
>
>Here's the idea -
>For the rest of this year, don't purchase gasoline from the two biggest
>companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling,
>they should be inclined to reduce their prices-and if they reduce their
>prices the other companies will too. But to have an impact, we need to
>reach literally millions of users. But it's doable!
>
>I am sending this note to 42 people. If each of you send it to at least
10
>more...and those 10 send it to at least 10 more... and so on by the time
the
>message reaches the sixth iteration we will have reached over one million
>consumers. Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense
to
>you, please pass this message on, or one you compose, to at least 10 more
>E-mail addresses.

Thanks for the video "The Look & Feel of the 50's". It was great.

Say, I need your help, I am scheduled to go to M D Anderson Hospital in
Houston, TX sometime in the month of March. I will be there for 6 to 8
weeks
and we (my wife & pooch - Sweet Pea) will be looking for housing in the
greater Houston area. Preferably something near the hospital. But we will
consider any ideas.
We would do the following: 1) House sit
2) Rent a house or condo
3) Renting an apartment is also an
idea.
4) Exchange houses (we are located
in Kansas City)
5) and suggestions?
Requirements: One bedroom, take a
dog, garage would be
nice and furnished.
If you have any connections in the Houston metro plex, it would be would be
greatly appreciated!

Bob
Enjoy reading the list. It has been helpful in many ways.

I am looking for a consensus concerning the following:

I have a "55" BelAir and have purchased a create 350HO Deluxe. It comes
with a "long" water pump and a stock GM HEI.

I understand that I must mount the motor at least 3/4" forward of stock
location to create a necessary HEI to firewall clearance. I can also
reform the firewall, in which case I can use stock mounts and location.
I know that I can purchase special motor mount kit specifically designed
for the relocation.

Reforming the firewall doesn't present to big of a challenge for me, but it
does destroy the originality of the sheet metal which I am trying to
maintain through out the car.

What I don't know is what issues I will encounter throughout the drive
train
(or other possible areas) by moving the motor forward, keeping in mind the
"long" water pump. I don't know what is affected if anything and if
something is affected, what is the "serious" factor of that particular
issue. For example: will the fan interfere with a 4 core radiator mounted
in the stock position,
using a 4 speed trans will there be any mounting, location or shifter
issues, drive shaft issues or perhaps other not so obvious issues etc
etc
etc.

I welcome all the information list members can provide.
Thanks in advance

Hello to Everyone,

HEY I AM TRYING TO SALE SOMETHING SO I WANT EVERYONE TO LOOK. A few years
ago I worked at a plant that made door panels for General Motors. They
allowed employees to bid on excess material. I have been selling this stuff
at the swap meets but I thought I would try the Bob Ford list.
This material is Gray Buckskin cloth, it has a foam backing on it. It
really is great material. It is very strong, I tell people if you can tear
it on your first try you can have it, nobody ever tore it. This material
can be used for anything, display cases, tool box liners, recover your
floor creepers, bar stools. All you vendors that want to line your display
cases this is perfect. You can cut it with scissors, nail or staple it.
It is at least 16 feet long by 22 inches. The only color I have is gray.
People that buy this will not be disappointed with its quality and
durability.
You can see pictures of this material at my personal web site at the link
below. Please email me if you have any questions. The price is just $15.00
and that includes postage! And remember every penny I make will go into my
57 so it's for a great cause.

Thank Everyone,

In regards to finding a valve spring compresser to use with the head on.
Sears sells a unit that attaches to the valve spring via a couple hooked
arms, and presses the retainer down to access the keepers. It is just
called,
" OVERHEAD VALVE COMPRESSOR". It is a nice little unit and sells for
around
$15.
I saw the posting a couple days ago and have a head I wanted to dismantle,
so
picked one up to check it out.
I am presently working on a 55 210 2 door and find the list to be both
informative and entertaining. Keep up the good work.

G'day Bob, I seem to recall it was a Pontiac Guy that first complained to
Gm
that he ordered a Pontiac, as he always Purchased Pontiacs, being a Purest
!!
when he took delivery he discovered a Chev in it not a Pontiac Motor, if I
recall he wanted to return it GM or Dealer refused, he took them to Court,
and beat GM in a Legal battle as GM at that time did not show in any
adverts
etc that they were now fitting different engines from different GM Plants,
I
guess the guy was really peed off but he had a point...he never received
what he Ordered or Paid for....I think GM settled out of Court ,, But they
sure got the news out to every one real fast that they were now going to
fit any motors that they seen fit into any GM Vehicles, the reason it is
still written in sales & showroom Flyers today.. If I recall I think this
happened around
1977 as Pontiac ceased Production on their original V8 motor late in 1976
if I recall correctly.

Goes to show little guys can take on Giants every now & then & win !!!!!!
Also Confirms why us car nuts are loyal to our favourite brands...Hey maybe
this guy is still around today ! Maybe even reads this Bob Ford Column !!!
Anyone Know who he was & if
still alive ? ( apart from GM that is HA!)

Bob,

Interesting that Kim should mention the 1955 Bel Air convertible given to
Bob
Sweikert for winning the 1955 Indianapolis 500. I have an old Speed Age
magazine which features a photograph of that car on the cover along with
Mr.
T. H. Keating, general manager of Chevrolet Motor Division holding a
checkered flag -- I keep it enclosed in a plastic cover because it is one
of
my prized possessions.

The magazine published another photo spread a few months before -- in the
December 1954 edition they did an "Auto Review" piece highlighting several
Chevrolet publicity photos and drawings of the brand new car. It has anoth
er
of the convertibles prominently depicted.

I have also often wondered what happened to the several vehicles painted in

Pace Car livery that were used at the track that day. My father was on
hand
for that race -- he attended every race from 1950 until the year that Bill
Vuckovich was killed on the back streach that year. I remember watching
home
8 mm footage he took of some of those races -- but I was too small to
actually attend having been born in 1953. He had a stopwatch on Vuckovich
when he did not come around on his last lap.

When the announcement came over the PA system he recalled getting a very
sick
feeling in his stomach. He did not return to the track until 1969 when we
went to time trials together to watch Mario Andretti take the poll position

on the first day of qualifications that year.

Funny thing, when I found all these magazines in a box several years ago,
there were no Speed Age magazines after the year 1955 -- guess he cancelled

his subscription.

By the way, I have been looking for a copy of the Road and Track magazine
which road tested the 1955 Bel Air -- if anyone has one I will buy it.
