Hi Bob

Are you still keeping track of 55,56,& 57 chevys for sale for interested
buyers?

If so, please keep my posted on ones in the Orange County area...that would
be near Long Beach or Seal Beach, California.

Thanks

Editor's note. Carol, I just send out cars for sale people send in. I
don't keep track of these cars for sale.

Bob, to the question of what color a 57 transmission was originally? I
believe the correct answer would be - no color. Every one I saw was the
original uncoated color.
Also regarding the largest size of tires to put on the rear of a 57- I
have
put 235R60-15 on mine with about 1/2 inch pace between the tire and fender.

That is with a stock 57 (55-64) rearend.

Editor's note. I talked to a old transmission guy this weekend and I asked
him the question about the color or transmissions. He told me the only
ones he had seen painted was when a person got a cheap
paint job and they painted the car without masking anything.

Bob, First of all, thanks for the List! I have really enjoyed reading
it,
since joining last week.

I really love these old cars, As of now I have 3.. 55 Hardtops, 55 Cameo,
55 Panel, 55 Dr Sedan, 56 4 Dr Belair Beauville 9 pass wagon, 57 2 Dr HT
and
57 4 Dr HT. My best car is a Gypsy Red and Shoreline Beige 55 Hardtop with
37,000 actual miles, still has original interior panels, glass and even has
the dealer sticker in the bottom of the rear window. It say's "Mt.
Washington Motor Company. Mt. Washington, KY. Phone 13"
It is a real conversation piece at car shows and cruises. It's previous
owner told me a lot of it's history since it was new. I am the 7th owner!
It is rare to see a car survive this long with a lot of the parts remaining
in show condition. I guess every subsequent owner really took good care of
her. This car is amazing also because it has a 235 6 cyl, manual 3 speed
with radio delete. You just don't see too many Hardtops with the bare
necessities. The guy I bought it from was contemplating putting in a V8
and cutting a hole for a 4 speed. I about died, and told him I would buy
it
and not to touch it.

Thanks for letting me share my story, but the real reason I am writing this
note is to let everyone on the list know I have the... 57 2 Dr Hardtop,...
55 First Series 1/2 ton Panel.... and 55 4 Dr Sedan, for sale.

The adds for the 57 and Panel are on traderonline.com I just bought a 57
4
Dr Hardtop driver and don't need to keep the 2 Dr. All of these vehicles
are projects and do not run. The 57 and Panel are restorable, but the 55
4
Dr is a parts car only. It has fire damage and only the doors, deck lid,
motor and trans are good. It has a 6 cyl, 3 speed with only 50,000 miles.
The interior burned but the drive train, doors, deck lid and some trim are
still intact.

The 57 is pretty solid and is all there except for the motor, trans,
interior and front windshield. It has also been mini tubbed in the trunk
area so larger tires could go under it. " I bought it this way! I would
never cut on a solid old car" , but to each their own. The frame has not
been cut on though, if someone wanted to put the original fender wells back
in... they could do so. It was originally Turquoise and had a V8.

The 55 Panel is an old 70's style hippie truck, I bought from a guy in
Louisville. It has the original motor and trans, but both are out of the
truck. The rear has some damage, but I have two good replacement doors and
a straight bumper.

If anyone is interested and has any further questions or would like to see
pictures: "Serious inquiries only" as my new digital camera takes great
detailed pictures, but I haven't learned how to scale my photos and they
are
large "350k each." I may need to buy some software "any advice out there
would be helpful". Please email me and I can send pictures and give any
other detailed info. I just have too many cars and projects. I will sell
to anyone on this list any of these cars for what I have in them. I live in
Southern Indiana, 5 miles from Louisville KY.

57 2 Dr Hardtop......................$3,100.00
55 First Series Panel.............$1,200.00
55 4 Dr Sedan Parts car.......$300.00

I also genuinely and truly wish "bdf19" the Best of Luck in finding a 57 2
Dr HT with decent interior and exterior for $3000.00 or less. Its not
impossible, just highly improbable!

And its sad, but those those California Laws are getting out of hand. I
built a 55 when I was stationed out there 15 years ago and had to have it
pass a test also. " Ridiculous"

I also believe that the transmissions were not painted at the factory, but
I
have no proof.

Good Luck to everyone and Thanks Bob,

I am on Eastern time and the times to call are;
Mon - Fri 6:00pm to 11:00pm EST and 8:00am to 11:00pm EST on weekends.

Hi Again, Bob,
Thought your list members would like to know what the competition is
doing as far as some Tri-5s are concerned. Gary Ruby, a fellow member of
Lost In The '50s Car Club Of Md., just returned from the CCI convention
near Orlando, Fla. His modified '55 BelAir 2 door hardtop received 990
points out of 1000 in the Modified class. A fantastic showing! However,
his
990 was only good enough for 3rd place! The winner got 997 and second was
994. The top vehicle in the show was a '55 Pickup that garnered 999! I
guess there's really no such thing as a perfect car! Wild Bill >>

Bill, I was at a convention just a couple years ago where a guy did receive

1000 points for his car. My aged brain can't remember what or who's car it
was, but I do remember it was the first time I have ever seen 1000 points
at
a CCI conv. Richard

Bob and all list members, I wanted to put in my 2 cents worth on this issue

that wild Bill posted:

"To: "BOB FORD", BOB_FORD
From: "Bill Kautz", INTERNET:kautz@home.com

Hi All,
For all the California readers of this list, be forewarned! The
California Air Resources Board, (CARB), is at it again! The I/M Review
Committee has issued a report recommending that 1966-1973 model vehicles be
emissions tested and eligible for scrappage. They have now targeted the
"Muscle Cars"! Remember that pre-'74 vehicles didn't have modern emissions
controls. That means most cars in that era will fail the proposed emissions
testing! For more information on this issue contact www.enjoytheride.com I
strongly urge all readers of this list to contact Brian Caudill at
brianc@sema.org He will add you or your club to the SEMA mailing list to
keep you abreast of all pending anti-old-car legislation. Believe me,
there's plenty of it happening around the country. We can't let a few
people legislate us out of our hobby! Keep up on all this news so you can
make your voice heard. SEMA will provide you with a list of legislators in
your area that you can contact to voice your disapproval of this type of
behind-your-back action by your governments. Again, many thanks to Bob for
this important forum. Wild Bill"
-------------------------------------This is so ridiculous that the CARB is

focusing on these cars that just a few Years ago they exempted from being
smogged. Now all of these year vehicles have had the smog equipment
removed.
It cannot be replaced due to it not being available, except maybe in
wrecking
yards, but then it may or may not work right. Anyway, what the CARB should
be
focusing on are: all the heavy polluters that exceed air quality limits and

then pay a fine so that they can continue to do it. I'm referring to
industry
- make them clean up their act or shut 'em down until they do. That's what
they are asking to be done to these classic cars. How about the big trucks?

and I know there are a lot of truckers out there who collect some very
nice
classic vehicles as well - but you have to agree that the older ones are
polluters and all that heavy soot they spew out is very dramatic, visually
and
makes people wonder why something isn't being done. I know there is
legislation in the works to control heavy trucks. My point is that there
are
many other factors that should be gone after as priorities before these
classics are legislated out of existence.
Thanks for the forum, and I love this list, Bob.

Bob,since we sometimes depart from the tri 5's could someone give me
suggestions on how to deal with my neighbors barking dogs?Every time we go
out to work on our project 55 we have to listen to that barking and it
drives us nuts, any tips would be greatly appreciated,Thanks,Dave

Dogs usually bark because they feel you're an intruder to their space and a
threat to them. You have to remember that property lines mean nothing to
them. Best bet is to try and make friends with them. Let them get used to
your presence and they'll quit treating you like an intruder. They may even
become protective of you. Try tossing them a rawhide bone, they don't bark
much when they're chewing and it's a good start at friendship. Barking
dogs
discourage trespassers, not always a bad thing.

Hey Classic fans!

Has anyone installed one of the new American Autowire / Factory Fit
"Classic
Update Series" wiring harnesses, as featured in the March 2001 issue of
Super Chevy (pp. 61-68)?

This looks like a great alternative to cobbling together the various
component harnesses available on the aftermarket, then trying to tie them
all into a scavenged fusebox, then add in all your modified's power
accessories (like windows, seats, locks, alternator, HEI, engine fan, etc.,
etc.).

Can any of our vendors on the list offer this at a discount from the $399
retail quoted on their home page?:

I'm not quite to this point in my project yet, but if I can get one for a
good price, I'll grab it now to install later!

Bob, just a note on air regulation in California and how it affects old
cars.
This is a little lengthy, and I apologize for that.

I work for the folks who regulate air pollution in Alabama so I've heard a
little about "why don't we do things as strict as California". Well, in a
sense, California is doing what Alabama does for air pollution - just what
EPA requires. California has "worse" ambient air conditions that Alabama
(technically more "non-attainment areas") and therefore, are required to
have
stricter controls. The controls are so strict that CA is trying some very
ingenious measures to meet the requirements. So how does this affect old
cars?

The older muscle cars have (in general) higher emissions of unburned
hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), etc. than
newer
cars. Hydrocarbons (volatile organic compounds 0 VOCs) and NOx are all
considered "precursors" of upper level ozone. That's the bad stuff
everybody
says adds to "global warming". CO is also called a "greenhouse gas".

I'm not so sure that CA is saying that all muscle cars will be banned
because
they're muscle cars. I think they're saying that those cars should be
checked closely because of their reputation as "polluters". From what I've

heard about the majority of Tri 5s on this list, not many guys are running
the original engines. Sounds to me like most folks have put in modified
350s
or Corvette engines. Maybe those engines can meet the emission standards.

A little history - Congress told EPA to measure the air pollution all over

the country and make a determination as to what is "healthy" and what is
not.
Those places listed as unhealthy are required to clean up the air. We in
Alabama don't have as far to go to reach the levels that constitute "clean"

as CA does. The CARB is bound by federal regulations to clean up the air.

Don't take this as being "pro-CARB" or that I am in favor of banning muscle

cars. I like a good 68 or 69 Camaro, too. My point is that the national
legislators have had as much to do with this as CARB. I also want to
encourage those who wish to raise a ruckus to raise that ruckus to those
who
can do something about the problem.

I've seen many cases where the public got involved too late. The time to
be
active is before the decision has been made. Getting a regulation repealed

is pretty difficult. Agencies like CARB have an obligation to the public
to
provide information. It might not be too late to contact CARB and make
sure
they have accurate information on the emissions of old cars. If there is a

lobby out there that thinks the old cars need to go, they will slant their
information to their advantage. The car guys should do the same thing. Be

persistent because sometimes it takes a while to find the right person to
talk to. You might start with the Ombudsman. Good luck !

A little edification on the "Styleline DeLuxe" may be in order

the name given to Chevy's next-to-best line of cars from 1949-1952. The

straight down from the center of the manifold into the cross over pipe
which goes over to the right side exhaust. The dual exhaust manifold
exits at the rear of the manifold and goes down at about a 45 degree
angle. At least, that's how it's been described to me - I haven't seen
one. If you are in a wreaking yard and see an Olds, please check for
this item. I'd appreciate it. Unlike, my '55's, I can't add dual
