Ok, I was in the store looking for yarn for an AMC car color motif ( aqua

), and while looking for some yellow fabric with dragonflys on it ( can't
find any, haven't seen any, that's what the fiancee wants! ), I passed thru

the " Car " section, where they have " Manly " fabrics...and W-O-W ! They
have four different kinds, all with both the '56 and '57 Chevy hardtops and

convertibles on them ( sorry, no '55's! ). One is greenish-brown with
belair
script , trunk V, and both cars on it as Lineart drawings, one is a beach
type blue with red and blue solid cars, another has palm trees with both
cars, and I forgot the other color, but it had colored cars as well. $4.99
to
6.99 a yard. Also, they had Tri-chevy Truck cloth, with '55 and '57 trucks,

as well as the 47-54 and 58-62 trucks, about 3 different ones. all in all,

pretty cool! I picked up some nice stained divider frames a restaurant
threw
out awhile back, I use one of them as a privacy shield upstairs, with a
Chevy
motif cloth draped over it. I may have to buy several dozen yards of this
newest material to do the same to the others, as I"ll be doing some
expanding
into the basement room soon as a hobby/craft room with my Lady. :?) So
times
awastin', I found this at Joann's Fabric store in Virginia, hopefully you
can
find it elsewhere as well. I think it was 100% cotton. Anyway, Have a good
weekend, I'll be visiting an auction to buy an AMC Hornet X cheap, I hope!

Hello everyone.

I am looking for an original hood bar for my 55. The chrome platers
somehow lost mine (it's a long story). Now they want to purchase one for
me and have that rechromed to replace it. If you have an excellent core
to sell, please email or call 972-289-6373 during the day. Any help is
appreciated, thanks.

Bob,

I remember back when I was a kid in the 1950's how there were a lot of
vehicles that dragged a strap of some kind, (leather or rubber?) from the
under-carriage of their cars. It dangled down and contacted the road
surface. I wonder, now, what those straps were for...does anyone else
remember them? Were they to dissipate static electricity? What were they
made of? Can someone tell us what function they served and why they
disappeared? Perhaps some of us interested in a truly authentic
retro-resto
might consider adding them to our rods.

A thanks to the several members of the list that responded to my inquiry
in regards to dates of the Pomona Swap Meets. Special thanks to Dennis
McGillis for the additional info on other car events, weekly cruises,
and auto museums. Also a special thanks to Scott Angelmaier in Las
Vegas for taking the time to call wreaking yards looking for the Olds
left side dual exhaust manifold, I'm seeking. He thought he had found
one, but it's off a '72 and I can only use one from a '65 - '70.
Having people like Dennis and Scott go out of their way to help out a
fellow list member just shows car people are the greatest and this list
helps us all. Thanks to Bob for the list.

Hi Bob-

Would you or anyone happen to know which letter in the VIN denotes whether
a 57 Chevy is a 150, 210, or Belair? Also,
will the VIN tell you the bodystyle too? (Hardtop, Sedan, Etc). Is it
hard to convert a 210 2 door HT into a Belair? Any info will greatly help.
Thanks again for all your effort.

Mike

Editor's note. My reference says the series number in the VIN is like this
If the first position of the VIN is
A OR VA the car is a 150
B OR VB the car is a 210
C OR VC the car is a Bel Air
D OR VD the car is a Sedan Delivery

Hi, Does anyone know out there if a floor mounted shifter was available
(stock) for a 1957? I am pulling parts out of a 57 4 door wagon and
unbolted a floor mounted shifter from the car. The way that the assembly
was in the car looked totally stock. This console shifter had an original
section of the flooring that fit the floor perfectly. The console also had
a clock that was molded into it at the front of it. All of the wiring
looked stock (no splices) and the linkage looked too bulky to be after
market.
Can anyone shed a little light on the subject? Thanks, Bob Ford

Hi Bob,
Just wanted to let you know that I finally finished watching the two
"Look and feel of the 50's videos" you made. I thought you did an
excellent job! At first I expected them to be all about the cars but
adding in those movies and clips made them even better. I never lived in
the 50's but my 55 Belair is my pride and joy and its great to see how it
fit in during its own time. I think I speak for everyone when I say the
time and effort you put into making this collection is very much
appreciated. Thank You!

On the rear of my 18 year old son's 502/502 powered 57 BelAir 2 dr sedan
we have 285-60x16 on polished Torque Thrusts and have plenty of clearance.

Also the web site for wheels and tires on a car like your own is
www.afftw.com/main.htm

Once your in you can call up a car like yours, select basic color and then
fine tune it to match yours. Then you can select different wheels. The
problem is most are for rubber band style tires.

Bryan,

Regarding Bryans question about editing digital photos, you could go buy
Adobe Photoshop which is the best I am aware of, or many lesser image
editing programs. However, you may also download free a fully functional
evaluation copy of Paint Shop Pro from Jasc software. http://jasc.com
They
are currently on Paint Shop Pro version 7, and previous versions have been
around and working great for years. It is a pretty complete editing
program
which works better than many you may purchase. Resizing the images is an
easy process with this software.

Regarding those who are griping that list members don't know or care how
the
cars originally were, you are just expecting too much. I've been reading
the list for almost two years, have responded to dozens of questions, and
have had few or no responses to most questions I have posed to the list
members. The dealers trying to sell upgrading options are frequent
respondents, and Cliff specifically has demonstrated good knowledge of
these
vehicles. I believe many list members just aren't that technical, or are
learning. Some of the responses I have received and seen on the list
demonstrate ignorance or stupidity. Not being the original owner of a
tri-five, once I see that someone else has stated what CCI claims to be
original, or thoroughly answers a question I see no reason for me to chime
in and respond with the same knowledge. When it comes to how to modify one
of these cars, several people may have slightly different tips, ideas, or
methods eliciting more responses than what color paint was used on
something
that wasn't painted. Others have requested it, and I will emphasize again,
please copy your responses to the list so others may learn. Many questions
don't get publicly answered. Keep asking the questions too, just don't
expect this to always be the best or only source of answers.

Many thanks to those who responded to my question on the original factory
finish of the overdrive transmissions. Everyone said that they were left
bare cast iron, so I guess that's it. I think I'll either use a cast iron
color paint or use a clear coat after cleaning because I can imagine bare
cast iron rusting like crazy!

Hi Again, Bob,

A little more on air pollution, emissions controls, etc.
I have no idea how many historic cars, antique cars, and street rods are
registered in California. I know there's a lot of them! Here in Maryland
there are approximately 20,000 of them. That's about 1% of the total number
of cars registered here. The fact that these cars are seldom driven, are
usually in top operating condition, and constitute a very small minority of
the total number of cars registered makes no difference to legislators and
regulators. If they can have cars scrapped the pollution control credits
are sold to the real polluters. They can then say that they've crushed so
many of the old polluting cars to help clean up the air.
California's branch of the EPA has the figures to show that, despite all
the cars that have been crushed, the air quality has not improved. CARB
elects to ignore this and continue to present regulations against a very
small number of registered cars and trucks. I guess they figure that being
such a small minority we won't be heard if we do protest.
Thankfully there's SEMA and Brian Caudill on the side of the car
hobbyists. I cannot stress enough that we're going to have to fight these
people every step of the way. Until government cracks down on the real
polluters, the car hobbyists are going to have to remain vigilant when it
comes to groups like CARB. Please contact SEMA at www.enjoytheride.com or
Brian at brianc@sema.org
One other thing comes to mind. I'm sure you've all seen the ads in the
newspapers that ask you to donate your old car for charity. If you donate
your car, chances are that it will be scrapped and the pollution credits
sold to a major polluter. Charities have found this to be another way to
raise funds. Before donating your old car, boat, or RV, ask the charity
what they intend to do with it. Whether it's scrapped by you or a charity,
it's still gone forever. Wild Bill

Regarding the 1000 point cars, I have seen two which were alleged to be
1000 point cars but I don't believe there can be one thats perfect. Both
of these cars were at different CCI Winter Nationals in Orlando; one
belonged to Bruce Smith ( A 57 convertible) and the other was a 55 but I
don't remmber who owned it. The 55 had a pitted radiator brace and in my
humble opinion, that is not a 1000 point car. But I have been known to be
picky in judging cars.
