Hey Bob! Hope all is well. Hope this isn't too long, but several
things caught my eye...beginning with your 4-speed wagon.

I remember reading that the Borg Warner T-10 was a dealer-installed
option late in 1957. I've never seen an actual example...however, a
"Chevrolet Service News" bulletin dated May 1957 and printed in the
"Chevrolet '57 Restorer's Technical Guide" (Motorbooks International,
1990) states that there was indeed a ..."four-speed synchromesh
transmission, special option equipment for use with both passenger
and Corvette models..." the bulletin goes on to say "Closely spaced
gear ratios of 2.2 (first), 1.68 (second), 1.30 (third) and 1.00 (fourth)
provide very high performance by allowing rapid acceleration with
minimum loss of engine R.P.M. at the shift points." This book is
full of Classic Chevy minutae straight out of GM. Fascinating!

For Mike Milam in Louisville Ky...I just turned over 100,000
miles on a 350TPI/TH700 in an '89 Caprice. A '93 LT-1 into my '57
Handyman is coming this year, Lord willing. From my experience...
1) Get the Helm shop manual for the car the engine came out of.
Helm's # is 1-800-782-4356. I also recommend "Chevrolet TBI and
TPI Engine Swapping" by Mike Knell. Go to www.jagsthatrun.com
to get that book. 2) I disconnected the smog pump and associated
plumbing from my TPI. It has no effect on the computer. Since you're
running a pre-'75 vehicle, you neither need nor should run a catalytic
converter...that won't affect the engine either. Stuff such as the EGR
I'd leave on, just because the engine was designed for it. And be
sure to run a Vehicle Speed Sensor! The TBI/TPI book explains...
"There are a lot of programs in the ECM which depend on the VSS."
3) You can also get tech info and parts from Jim's Performance in
Maryland. Nice guy...Jim's # is 1-410-465-9569. Jim will also convert
your wiring harness if you wish. But GET THE BOOKS...they're
worth their weight in gold!

Finally, in reference to smog laws, bureaucrats and car crushing:
This morning, a news item quoted the United Nations as saying
that "global warming will destroy the planet"; and their solution, of
course, is that we adopt the Kyoto Protocol, which would destroy
our hobby along with the United States economy, leaving us in
bondage to a global authority with NO regard for our Constitution.
However, if you believe our own government climate records, there
is NO global warming! A thorough scientific refutation can be found
at www.globalwarming.org . The point is...I don't think we can "sit
on the sidelines" anymore. We need to be involved, keeping up on
any car-related issues (and environmental issues such as global
warming ARE car related!) and letting our elected officials know
how we feel! Go to www.sema.org and see firsthand how people
can make a difference! But be informed and take action!

Oh, about RKO...I understand Desilu bought the movie studio in
'50's. The old "I Love Lucy" shows are now owned by Viacom, who
also owns Paramount Pictures, CBS, VH-1, and my employer,
Infinity Broadcasting. General Tire bought the RKO radio stations
such as KHJ/Los Angeles and WRKO/Boston...home to some
of the best Top 40 Rock n' Roll radio of the '60s and early '70s. But
an FCC investigation into their billing practices brought that empire
to an end, I think in the early '80's. It might have been earlier.
Much of the formatics of today's radio originated with consultant
Bill Drake and the RKO stations!

Editor's note. Great info. The in depth knowledge of list members should
not be a surprise to me anymore.

Rob,

I apologize for my use of ignorance & stupidity posted on Bob Ford's Chevy
list. I value the input of all who make the effort to contribute to Bob's
list, and think it is a good place for enthusiasts to read and learn. My
choice of words may have been harsher than you believe was appropriate, but
the tone of my message was that Bob Ford's list is not for experts only,
and
was a complaint against others who did not feel they were receiving the
expert knowledge they expected. I felt they were badmouthing all list
members as having no reverence for the originality of these cars, and
lacking knowledge about them. Conversely, I believe many knowledgeable
list
members felt others answered the question, and there was need for them to
respond with a duplicate answer. When we don't know something, we all ask
questions which may seem dumb to an expert, and we also my not always have
the best answer to a question. Keep asking questions and keep trying to
answering them.

In the sixties I remember many people having chain or metal hanging down to

Mike,

Regarding converting a '57 Chevy 210 to a Belair. It really depends upon
who you are trying to fool. The VIN will always give it away. Mostly,
it's
just trim, and emblems. If your car is slightly modified, and not an
authentic restoration, it is fairly easy to fool most people who aren't
experts. It is practically the norm these days to see 210's with some
amount of Belair trim, and it depends upon the owner if they are being
honest about the model. There are Belair scripts, and different chrome
trim
on the interior, but most would only be noticed by a true enthusiast. So
as
long as all 210 or non Belair emblems are removed from the interior, most
people will not be able to identify the model from the interior. On the
exterior, the hard part to find and change is the top crown molding on the
fins. These aren't reproduced, and frequently not changed on many 210's
masquerading as Belair's. The Belair crown molding extends from the tip of
the rear fins almost to the rear window. The stainless rocker panel trim
is
also frequently neglected, but was also installed as an option on many
210's. The front and rear "V" are gold color rather than chrome/silver on
the Belair, as are the front fender louvers. The most obvious, and
commonly
upgraded Belair trim is the aluminum inserts that fit between the rear
fender stainless trim. There are supposed to be gold Belair emblems on the
aluminum inserts also. The crown moldings, all the gold trim, rocker
moldings, and interior trim are the commonly overlooked items. Personally
I
hate to see people trying to pass off a 210 as a Belair, but add the trim
that you like so your car makes you happy. I am most critical when people
are trying to sell cars and are misrepresenting a 210 with some Belair trim
as if it is a real Belair. Contrary to many price guides, I don't believe
prices differ too much between 150, 210 and Belair models with similar
equipment until you look at authentic restorations, or authentic
restoration
candidates. By the way, some of the reproduction trim, which looks great,
is not the same as original. So experts, if they bother to look hard
enough
at your car, will be able to tell parts are reproductions as well as a 210.
Bob's VIN information about A, B, C, & D is correct, and if there is a V
preceding them, the car originally came with a V8.

Hey Bob-
I think the answer to your latest trivia question regarding the Beach Boys
was Al Jardine who wanted to become a dentist.

Since I'm writing I would also like to address a few issues for the
betterment of the list since I know you are too nice a guy to say
anything....

1. In response to those that ask for websites such as for the Pomona
Swap meet...to find a site use the 'Search' function on your browser. Just
put in what you're looking for and you'll get a mess of sites to check
out...one will be what you want. It's a waste of Bob's time to post those
kinds of messages.

2. For those that ask about basic tech questions... most all of this
type of info is in the shop manual for the particular car...if you are
planning on restoring or working on a car, just go out and BUY the shop
manual. You cannot expect to work on a car without it. It will answer all
your questions. You can get them for $20 to $40 depending on the source and
condition. Then if there's something not covered, ask it here. Please don't
waste Bob's time by posting elementary questions.

And finally, a friendly response to the person looking for a car and LIVES
in Pomona. You MUST be kidding since you live where the largest amount of
hobby cars are ever for sale. (Pomona Swap Meet)
And for all those members that are easily insulted, these comments are not
meant to be rude, just in my humble opinion about time someone said
something.

You

In regards to your question about the rear shock support kit, I can only
tell you of my experience. I looked into this rear shock support as I'm a
disabled auto mechanic. I saw the unit that "Classic Chevy International"
sells in their catalog they sell it for $48.95 plus shipping. It is a
single
square tube with welded end plates and 2 tabs welded to the outer edge of
the rail for the upper shock studs.
https://www.classicchevy.com/default.asp. The
rear shock support that "Mike Drago Chevrolet Parts" in Easton Pa.
(610)252-5701 has is built with 2 square tubes spaced with welded end
plates
and 2 upper shock stud plates welded between the rails part #16034 for
$39.00 plus shipping. In my estimation Mike Drago's shock support would
carry the load of the shock to the support with less future fatigue to the
metal and welds. Remember this is my opinion on what I see in these two
support kits.

I hope this helps you

Bob,

It appears that there is a move to introduce electric cars into California
in an effort to reduce pollution. The electricity required to recharge the
batteries in electric cars may come from coal fire powered stations. My
experience tells me that coal fired power stations are highly pollutant
which defeats the purpose of replacing gasoline powered vehicles with
electric powered vehicles, or maybe the power stations get pollution credit
points for crushing old cars?

Hi Bob,

To Pete Cop:

Pete,

It's easy to make up a "Rear Shock Mount" for your Classic. Cheap too. (or
it was)

I put one under both my '57 Hardtops. I used 2 inch square Tubing (1/4 inch
wall) as the cross member, Angle Iron (the L shaped kind) as the Shock
Mounts and pieces that were welded to the Tubing ends so I could bolt this
Mount in place using 3/8 inch bolts inserted through the Frame Rails. I
chose to Weld two pieces of flat 1/4 inch stock (about 4 inches long - one
at each end) to what the "Bottom" of the Mount is, so it would help hold
the
Shock Mount even with the bottom of the Frame Rails, and put less stress on
the 3/8 inch Bolts.

You can Weld this Mount in if you'd like, but I wanted to be able to remove
it easily if I wanted.

I've yet to have ANY trouble from these Mounts. Painting it's a good idea
also.

Thanks. RJ
