As always Bob, Kudos for this great list......

I have a 4 dr Belair sedan and am looking for the small (itsy bitsy) side
trim pieces that go on the post/door jamb to complete the side trim. All
of
the catalogs seem to sell all of the other pieces from spear point to rear
quarter with the exception of these small pieces specific to 4 doors.

Anybody know where I might be able to get these.

An interesting note: while rebuilding the brakes, one of the drums had a
long spring wrapped around the circumference in the groove on the inner
outside edge of the drum. I have gotten several answers as to what it was
most likely for from antivibration to anti squeak. Any other
interpretations?

I am doing a frame off on a 57 2 dr. HT I bought a shock support cross
member for the restoration, and since this subject is fresh, I'd like
to ask a few questions regarding the installation. This cross member
should be installed after the body is put back on the frame for
clearance purposes, correct? If so, what is the proper clearance? What
do you do with the top stud of the shock, I'm sure you would bolt to
new shock mount, but what about the original holes in the floor, will
the stud still come up through there as well? Do you place a nut
there, with rubber grommets? Please post answers on Bob's list, so
others will benefit. Thanks. Bill

Hi Bob,
I really enjoy the list.
I was wondering if any members of this list have Vintage Air on their car?
If so, how do you like it? Who installed it for you?
I'm getting Vintage Air put in my car this Spring.
Thanks in advance.

<< What I would like to ask is, a few years ago I saw a country music
video on t.v. I believe it was the Everly Bros., I think the name of the
song was
."On the Wings of a Dove". Anyway ,it was about some guys taking a 57
chevy
convertible from a junk yard and bring it back to life. Did you ,or anyone

else see this video? I sure would like to find out if it would be possible
to acquire a copy of this video.Thanks,Cheo-57 Chevy Sports Coupe >>

The Everlys had a song titled: On The Wings Of A Nightingale, but it is not

about what you describe, The song Wings Of A Dove was done by Ferlin Husky
&
it too, was Not about what you described. Are you SURE it was the Everly
Bros.???? I have NEARLY everything they did (except for a few later things)
&
I don't recall any of their songs about a 57 Chevy!!!!!!! Richard

Editor'e note. I saw Ferlin Husky at Branson a couple of years ago. Great
show.

up.

Also, I have a used fuel tank in reasonable condition for sale. $25 plus

and it needs to be cleaned out and treated inside to make functional but
otherwise as I said it's in reasonable condition.

regarding shock bars:

this is not a widely known add-on. it wasn't available in 55 - 57. it's
an added support that is used to keep the shocks from breaking off (after
some time) or pushing through the sheet metal. they were mounted on a
vulnerable spot so in '58 chevy changed this. the shocks were mounted
under the trunk area to some sheetmetal. although i dont think it's likely
that the shocks will break or push through there is a chance after some
time. a great reason for these shock bars is for ride quality.

the shock bar allows the shocks to mount directly onto the frame. the
shock bar is bolted (dont weld it) between 2 parts of the chassis frame
and the shocks are then mounted onto this support bar. however later when
you change shocks in the rear you need to remove the shock bar.

depending on what frame you have (one piece or welded) there are 2
different shock mounts. you need to feel under the fram and if you feel a
seam or bump it's the welded frame. however there are also stronger shock
bars. get the better one of course. when inquiring ask if it's a double
bar. the double bar is the best. am not 100 pct. sure if it's actually a
double bar but in fact there are 2 of them made. someone decided to
improve on the first one.

i have one and it made a nice difference in the ride in the rear because
now road shocks go to the chassis and not the body so it has to make a
difference. less bouncing around, etc. of course this does not eliminate
any 'bouncing around' one may do within the car.......wink wink.... :)

Hi Bob,

You're correct about job the Rear Shock Mount does. It relieves the stress
of mounting the Rear Shocks to the Body by mounting them to a metal bar.

I only have one '57 that the Shocks broke through the Trunk floor on, and
that's one too many.

The hardest part of making one of these Mounts is cutting all the pieces.

As for converting a Generator car over to an Alternator, a lot guys around
me used a GM Alternator with an external Mopar Regulator. It takes one wire
to the Battery, and one wire to the Resistor. I've ran this set up for
years.

Thanks. RJ

Matt, yes you can remove the convertor without draining the transmission,
however you will lose some fluid when you do so. It is a good idea to
replace the convertor seal while you have the engine out.

Good luck, Wade

Hey Bob, this is for CheoA, who asked about an Everly Bros. song...

I don't remember them doing "On The Wings Of A Dove", but they did
have a song in 1984, "On The Wings Of A Nightingale". It was originally
on Mercury Records. I don't know if a video is available...it was a
critically
acclaimed album however. As I remember, it was the first time the
brothers worked together since the 70's.I don't remember it being a
big hit though, which may make it hard to find. I want to say Paul
McCartney was involved with the album, whose title escapes me.
But this is more information than you had before.

Seems there was a slew of videos featuring Classic Chevies
during the early days of MTV. Robert Plant's "Big Log" comes to mind.
I think it had a red and white '55 convertible. Nowadays your kids
may be watching "S Club 7" on Fox Family. This modestly talented
teen-pop group tools around in a red '55 convertible as well.

First I want to thank Bob for his time and effort to provide us Chevy
Lovers
with a forum to swap info and/or advice.
Second, I want to be one of many who would understand where Marc is coming
from.
I didn't get the impression Marc was trying to be anything but helpful.
However, I also know that MOST manuals, don't always answer questions for
some of us.
I believe 99% of the people who maintain their classics, use a fair amount
of both book and verbal knowledge.
But, in almost every issue of these postings, I find myself saying; "Now
that's a question I'd like an answer to myself!"

So thanks again Bob, Marc, and all you folks out there who work hard to
make
this list so helpful, (and sometimes entertaining) to me.

By the way Bob, I find delicious, comedic irony in a man who's name is
Ford,
taking the time to host a site for classic Chevy's! Keep up the good work!

Please, when you list an item for sale or need an item, include your
location.

Since I'm the one that originally asked for the dates of the Pomona
Swap, I thought I'd answer Marc's comment. I asked on this list and on
the Olds list that I receive, because it wasn't something that I needed
an immediate answer and I knew someone on one or both lists would have
that info. I received several e-mails, most from this list, with the
info. For me, the interesting aspect of asking this list is that I
have the opportunity to "meet" other members. One, took the time to
check wreaking yards in Las Vegas for the Olds exhaust manifold I'm
looking to buy. Another, is from, if I remember correctly, Irvine, CA,
and sent me info on weekly cruise/show events in the Orange County area
plus info on Auto related museums in LA. In addition, this member has
kids and grand kids living within 40 miles from me, here in Washington
State and had been here last year. All this info and help from these
two members I wouldn't have had if I'd used a search engine. Since I
will probably be in both of these areas sometime in the coming year, we
just might have an opportunity to meet face to face.

The first paragraph in every one of Bob's lists says, <<<<<
THIS LIST IS DESIGNED AS A MEANS FOR PEOPLE INTERESTED IN THE 1955,
1956, AND 1957 CHEVROLETS TO COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER. ALL OPINIONS
ARE WELCOME. >>>>

That's what we are doing - having communication,
expressing opinions, and "meeting" other 55-56-57 Chevy enthusiasts.

By the way, since the list of weekly cruise/show events I received were
pretty much located in the area south and east of Long Beach, if anyone
know of others such events north and west of Long Beach, I'd be
interested as I will be in SO. CA. the last of March in San Pedro and in
Northridge - two very different areas. Any cruise nights in the
"valley"? I really doubt I can find this info using a search engine.

Anyone coming to Washington State looking for similar info, I have it as
we have a very comprehensive list published every year with swap meets,
weekly cruises, and weekend cruises for Washington, Oregon, and
Idaho. I'd be glad to furnish info on these.

Stephen,
First of all, like Charlie Schneider says, there are no stupid questions
here. And, being that you are overseas, you're probably not up on all the
modifications for American cars. The rear shocks on 55-57 Chevys are
mounted
on the top through the trunki floor. This causes a lot of stress on the
floor
and eventually, it cracks and splits at the shock mounts. The replacement
mount bolts or is welded to the frame. This not only eliminates the stress
cracks in the floor, but it gives you a better ride, because the stress is
on
the frame, which will not flex like the body. At $40-50, it is a very
inexpensive and very practical modification.

Alright, for those of you in question over the rear axle bearings of a
55/56
Chevy... According to the 1955 shop manual, The axle bearing had one seal,

that went on the wheel side. These bearings depended on the gear lubricant

for lubrication. So those of you who have this type of bearing with the
seal
inward, fix it now or you'll have lubrication-starved bearings. Plus, it
doesn't make sense to have the wheel side of the bearing open to external
dirt/dust/debris. Now according to the 1956 shop manual, permanently
sealed
bearings were used, which meant seals on both sides of the bearing. In
conclusion: If using a 1955 type axle bearing, THE SEAL GOES ON THE OUTSIDE

OF THE BEARING, TOWARDS THE WHEEL. I looked at my untouched original 55
axles, and yep, the seals are towards the wheel.

Bob,

You are right about the rear shock kit. If you are running air shocks...
you
have to use the kit. It will bend your floor-mounted shock mounts. It is
just a steel bar with new upper shock mounts welded to it. It is easy to
install and if you ever want to remove it, it is just a couple bolts. For
the 100 point show car people...... it does mean drilling a couple holes in
the frame so if you want to go back to stock, your will have some welding
and grinding to do. Mine has been on for 2 years and no complaints or
maintenance.
