Hi Bob: Always a pleasure when the list appears. Again, thanks for all of
your hard work. While I don't remember which Everly Brothers song that went

with the video, I do remember the car. It was what appeared to be a candy
gold rag which, when the song was thru, had a '53 Chev grille bar with
    extra
teeth, was, at least nosed, and had a white (T&R?) interior. I think that I

also saw it in a magazine after that.

    Hi Bob and list members,

Catching up on the lists, I see a lot of comment about rear shock
mounting bars. Just to throw my couple cents in the pot.....I have one on
    my 57 Nomad. It
also has air shocks. I have had the car about 4 years now and haven't had a
    problem. In
fact, my being a novice at mechanics, I ordered one to install when I
change to the 3:73 posi rear from a '69 Camaro. While taking a close look
under the rear, in preparation to
install it, I found to my surprise that the previous owner had already made
    the change. The
mount that I have is a double parallel cross member and not a one piece
    tube that I had bought.
The company I bought it from indicated that the original floor mounting
    points had to
be cut out on station wagons. This would allow clearance to keep the shock
    mounting
at the original height or length. This is a very strong recommendation for
    anyone doing
    a high performance car.

Bob, your list is a valuable asset to the hobby. Guys, keep asking
all of those questions. The answers we get are helpful to a lot of us. I
    have a lot of the
original shop books on my car, but unless you are big on mechanics,
    electronics, etc. it is
still nice to ask people in the know and with experience. Beside the point
    that in a lot of
cases, there is more than one way to approach a problem or to hear a better
    idea on making
changes. As another member put it, the interaction of the list keeps the
    interest level up.
We are all car nuts or we wouldn't be part of this list. Who among us does
    not like to sit
around and talk about our cars, the good ol' days etc.?

I need some info about power brakes on my 55. I plan to put disk brakes on
    all 4 wheels.
I am told that I need a proportioning valve on this setup.
I can understand why I would need a proportioning valve when I have disk
    front and drum rear brakes.
I don't have a proprotioning valve when the brakes are all drum brakes.
Why do I need one when
    the brakes are all disk?

Bob, my family has enjoyed Todd's recipe's for years. We routinely make
his Nazi soup recipe (from Seinfeld episode).
He also has a weekly notification you can subscribe to off his web page
that alerts you to a new recipe each week. In fact before I got to your
email, I had down loaded this week's recipe for Red Lobster New England
Clam Chowder. It is a nice family project to make a recipe you are
interested in and then enjoy the fruits of your labor.

    Peace.

To Dave Turner looking for an old travel trailer... Go to
www.traderonline.com and click on RV. Go to the search page and select
travel trailer (versus motorhome) and put in the year range, price and
geographic location in the US you would travel to buy it (NE, SE, WEST

    Bob... for the list

To Loretta looking for Vintage Air stories... I bought the "Sure Fit" kit
for my 59 Chevy truck (ok..its not a 55-57 Chevy.. but close). I had
    several
problems with incorrect parts and parts missing but the customer service
people at Vintage sent the right part after I talked to them. One of the
pre-bent hoses just would not fit my 59 so I had new hoses fabricated at a
local AC shop. I am happy to say that I charged the system last weekend (I
live in Florida) and it is FREEZING cold and doses a nice job of
    circulating
the air. I am very happy with the end result even though there were a few
trying times during the install. One thing else... the heather/defroster is
much better than the factory unit and since it uses the factory 59 heater
controls, it keeps the dash stock looking. I would give the unit an 8 for
    the install/instructions, a 9 for customer service, and a 10 for overall
    heating/cooling capability.

This is for Bob Mc Nulty re :rear drum spring.

Bob the spring that is present on the outside of the brake drums is to help
in the dissipation of heat. These were installed when Chevy went to 14"
wheels from 15". The next heat dissipation idea was the finned drums of the
    sixties.

    Hi Bob,

I just wanted to ask Louis from New York, "Why" would you need to remove
    the
Rear Shock Mount to replace the Rear Shocks?

    I never have.

The Mounts I fabricated have enough clearance that you CAN unbolt the top
    of
the Shock with the Mount STILL under the Vehicle.

Also, if you didn't see my previous post to the List, I DO have a '57
Hardtop the Shocks broke through the Trunk Floor. So the Rear Mount I made
was a must to get the stress off this area.

This is for Loretta with the '55 Nomad. I put a Vintage Air in my '56 Chev

this last year. I think there are a few things you should know about
    before
having this done. The unit I put in was a complete under the dash
    heater-A/C
system. The major problem is that you cannot use the original radio any
more. The unit takes up too much room behind the right hand side to allow
the speaker/power unit to fit. The other problem is that it is a very
    tight
fit -- took me two days to get that thing in and tied down. Also, the
bracket for the compressor needed to be modified before it would line up
    with
the belts properly. One other thing, make sure whoever does the install
hooks up the ground wire from the blower motor to the body. The
    instructions
are real vague on that, but the blower won't work if you don't. Good luck.

    Hi Bob;
I wonder if any readers have Los Angeles Assembly Plant 1957 Chevrolets
built around April ( VIN #s 16X,XXX). The build sheet carbons for my Nomad
were under the front passenger side carpeting, between the carpeting and
padding. They provide some very interesting information, including
the Dealership, if the vehicle was "special order". I don`t know if it were
common practice or they just ended up there. I`d be interested in hearing
    from
anyone else who has found their build sheet carbons.

Thanks Bob. My question is for Louis in n.y., why do you say, not to weld
    the
rear shock bar and to bolt it instead. I am putting one on mine and was
wanting to weld it. If you say, there is not enough strength in the side
rails and the welds will break the frame away, then couldn't I weld a
    larger
plate for more reinforcement? I'm afraid that by drilling holes thru the
frame that it will weaken it. Rod............

The video showed it being draged out of a junk yard (or as I call

I too would like a copy of that video if any one knows where it would be

To Bob McNulty in regards to the spring wrapped around the brake drum.
I've always thought it was to help dissipate heat buildup in the drum.
The spring coils readily give up the heat from the drum to the air and
