I hope someone has an answer to the question on the last list about
proportioning valves on a disk brake systems. I am going to change my all
drum brakes to all disk brakes. 2 catalogs I have say that you need a
proportioning valve on an all disk brake system but not on an all drum
system. Are they just trying to sell more parts or is a proportioning
valve really needed on an all disk brake system.

I have installed Vintage Air systems on 3 vehicles, a '56 Chevy, '65 Impala
and a '68 Mustang and did the work all by myself in the drive way when I
lived in the desert heat of Las Vegas, NV. The equipment fit well for the
most part; the systems work very well, and the technical services
department
at Vintage Air was very helpful. I have no particular mechanical skills to
brag about. I would suggest however, that it is vital to have a very good
radiator/cooling system if you're already running on the warm side with
your
engine since the added strain of mounting the condenser in tandem with your
radiator robs some of the cooler air that normally flows through your
radiator. I wouldn't hesitate to use Vintage Air products again......Doug

Hi again Bob and list members,

I'm finally current on my lists. Someone asked why need a
proportioning valve when installing disk brakes. The disk brake and the
drum brake require
different amounts of pressure to operate. To be sure to have smooth brake
operation without
the risk of locking them up, this valve is used to regulate the pressure to
the
front and rear.

I made this conversion, and the kit warned about the danger of not
installing this
valve.
Bob, thanks for all of the time and effort you put into publishing
and mailing this list.
It is informative and entertaining at the same time. Your efforts are
truly appreciated.

Regarding the "part that chevy forgot" I built a shock mount for my 56
sedan out of a piece of 1-1/4 inch schedule 10 pipe. A simple piece of
pipe welded directly between the frame rails, no beefing up of the frame
required. Here is a tip: Throw away the original type shocks with the top
posts. Get some new shocks that have the eyelet with the rubber bushings
on top and bottom. These shocks are generally better that the post type.
Look what type of shocks are used on trucks and 4x4's. What I did was to
find a large bolt that fit through the top eyelet. I believe it was 3/4
inch. I then drilled two holes through the 1-1/4 inch pipe "shock mount",
stuck the bolts through and welded them in place. This is where the upper
shock eye mounts to the shock mount. I have been running this for about 3
years and it has stood up to many big block launches. The whole thing cost
less than $10. I believe it is easier to remove my shocks than I would be
to try to get a wrench in between a "store bought" shock mount and the
trunk floor as would be required with the upper post type shocks. When I
work on my modified '56, I try to look at how modern performance vehicles
do things. To look at how chevy did things in the '50's only solves part
of the problem. If you go through the trouble of correcting the factory
shock mount problem, why solve it with a bad solution? It may be that you
really love those factory style shocks or like scraping your knuckles on
the underside of the trunk. One last thing, sprint cars are great! There
are many high performance suspension and break components that are used
on sprint cars that are easily adapted to a 55-57 chevy. Sprint car
products are built to take the abuse of the dirt track and definitely hold
up while cruzing down the strip. If anyone has interest in my wilwood twin
master cylinder breaks let me know. I stole these off a sprint car. Pretty
cool and I get lots of comments about them. This setup will work for
drum/drum, disc/drum, or disc/disc setups. Cost about $150 new. Still
looking for big block fender well headers and good front fenders for a 65
chevy II. Thanks

Editor's note. I am interested in your wilwood twin master cylinder.
Please tell us more.

these are one's you made. however with some others out there perhaps they
may not have enough clearance. also, it is sometimes easier to remove the
shock mount to get at the bolts for the shocks.

rod

some guys may want to remove the rear shock mount to get at the shocks
easier or to run exhaust pipes that are larger or whatever.

if you can get at your rear shocks and shock bolts easily without removing
the shock bar mount then it's ok to weld. one thing to consider is if you
need to move the shock bar mount later on. it may be easier to drill new
holes a little lower (or higher) than to break the weld and re-weld again.

not sure about the effect of drilling a hole in the chassis. as long as
it's not a very big hole i dont think it would matter. they make chassis
much stronger than necessary. if you drilled holes all over the chassis
that's one thing. but 2 small holes which are then filled with a bolt
shouldnt matter. i suppose the bolt screwing into the hole would 'replace'
what was drilled out of the frame.

Hi Bob,

Once again, great job your doing on the list.

To Rod,

Rod, if you want to bolt your Rear Shock Mount in instead of welding it, go
ahead. As long as you place the bolts in the center of the rails, you won't
(or shouldn't weaken it)

BOTH my '57 Hardtops have Rear Mounts under them that I fabricated out of
2"
square 1/4" wall steel tubing.

The guy who welded together the first mount I made said he didn't see why
it
wouldn't support a Semi? (this may be stretch, but I think they're heavier
than a '57 Chevy?)

After 18 years, I've yet to have ANY trouble from either mount, and it's
not
that hard to make one up.

Thanks. RJ

Hey, guys. Does anyone have a product or method they would recommend for
cleaning and sealing a gas tank? The tank on my 57 sedan is apparently
rusty
and is fouling my carb. After only a few minutes (after taking the carb
off
and cleaning) the car won't idle. It runs great right after cleaning. It
runs great if you keep the rpms up. But let it idle down and she'll drop
out. However, it will idle after cleaning the carb. I've looked at
virtually all the points of tuning the engine. I also added a second fuel
filter. Since I've seen the residue in the bowls, I am convinced it's
trash
in the gas. Any recommendations?

TIA Bob for the list

I have a chance to pick up a 78 camero (whole car, wrecked) that has a "350
and automatic tranny in it" for $350

I really want to put a 350/350 or r400 in my 56 and was wondering if anyone
could tell me anything about the most likely setup this camero might have.
I haven't been able to contact the seller yet or see the car for myself.
but was wondering if someone could enlighten me a little (my wife seems to
have no problem enlightening me with her opinon ;-)

Would/could this be a possible swap? I really don't know that much about
when chevy went with tuned port injection/computer stuff and all and am not
interested in trying my hand at any of that. Is 78 a good year of the
standar carb type 350, HEI i can deal with, plus I hope to get all the Air

Any coments or help increasing my knowledge base, much appreciated.
