This is in reference to lou concerning rear shock bars. What makes him
think
the shock mount kits sold by Danchuck, Classic or any other manufacturer
are
designed by engineers? I doubt any of these companies could afford the cost

involved in developing and durability testing them. I built my own from
moly
tubing and welded it in. It stands up to a 550 hp big block with a 9" Ford

trac loc rear end with no problems.

I recently purchased a 55 Chevy 2 door sedan that came with a sway bar
installed on the front, but the rear sway bar, which the former owner had
purchased, had never been installed. Unfortunately the instructions for
installing the rear bar were lost. If anyone can help with instructions I
would appreciate it. The bar has no brand name or numbers showing on it.
It is a gold anodized color with black rubber bushings.
It appears to mount on the top of the differential housing rather than the
bottom but I could be wrong. Any help appreciated. Email
vernon@apex2000.net Thanks.

lou1@westnet.com made some disparaging remarks about backyard engineers
while singing the praises of real engineers as he gave his opinion on rear
shock mounts. Hey Lou, are you a real engineer? Let me remind you that real
engineers originally came up with the shock mounting system that failed in
the first place. As for buying one ready made, how can you be sure that the
replacements were designed by real engineers? What are their
qualifications?
I too am leery of home brewed and after market suspension components but
shock mounts? Come on now. They're obviously not structural, or else Chevy
wouldn't have just bolted them to the floor sheetmetal. Shocks don't
support
tons of weight. They don't support anything unless you're using air shocks
or shocks with overload springs. If you use these, you're asking for
trouble
with any kind of stock shock mounting system. Anything that someone can
come
up with is likely to be stronger than what Chevy designed.

Gary,
I agree with you about replacing the gas tank, instead of having it cleaned

out. I called a few places to have my 62' Impala tank cleaned out and they
wanted $150-$250. I bought a brand new tank for $125. But, please tell us
all
where you got a 55-57 tank for $76.50? The cheapest I have seen them is
$149.
I'm sure the guy will get plenty of business from this list at that price.

Hi Tri-5ers,
This is in response to Lou who wouldn't recommend fabricating your own
shock mounts. He says that "Mechanical engineers go through many years of
schooling to understand metal stress, metallurgy and structural supports".
If they're so smart why did they design the '57 shock mount the way they
did in the first place?
My late uncle didn't have a very high opinion of most engineers. He was
a tool designer for 60 of his 85 years. He said that anyone who puts
something on paper for someone else to build should have at least 3 or 4
years experience in the field first, before he gets his degree. (An
internship, if you will.) Look at modern automotive engineering. If
engineers had to work under the hood of a modern car for any length of time
there would be some drastic changes from the way things are crammed into
that small space! On many new cars you have a great deal of difficulty just
changing spark plugs. Granted, new cars get better gas mileage and, on
average, hold up better than cars of 40 or 50 years ago. The downside is
that they are also very expensive to repair. Thanks again for the list,
Bob. I'm sure to get a lot of flack from your engineer readers! Wild BIll

I have over twenty 55, 56, & 57 cars that I need to sell. Most are four
doors, missing a lot, some with good front sheet metal. Of the two door
models, most are rough and somewhat stripped, but savable. Prices from $300

to $1000, must be trailered from Columbus, Georgia. Please, serious
inquires
only, you know if you would be willing to come and get any or be able to
arrange shipping. E-mail for more info. Gerry Kennon, glkennon@aol.com

<< Hey, guys. Does anyone have a product or method they would recommend
for
cleaning and sealing a gas tank? The tank on my 57 sedan is apparently
rusty
and is fouling my carb. After only a few minutes (after taking the carb
off
and cleaning) the car won't idle. It runs great right after cleaning. It

runs great if you keep the rpms up. But let it idle down and she'll drop
out. However, it will idle after cleaning the carb. I've looked at
virtually all the points of tuning the engine. I also added a second fuel

filter. Since I've seen the residue in the bowls, I am convinced it's
trash
in the gas. Any recommendations?

Tom, I recommend ONE more thing that MANY people neglect OR don't even
think
about !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can tell you from experience I had on my way to
the
Dearborn Convention years ago. To make a SUPER LONG story very short,
change your SENDING UNIT FILTER in your in your gas tank!!!!!!! Believe
me,
it can cause all the problems you are having AND THEN some!!!!!!! MAYBE
that
isn't it, but it's a cheap insurance policy & not very difficult to change!

To badbowtie, I had 2 56 Chevy 210's. A Nassau Blue 2 dr. AND a
Mustard/Custard 4 Dr. Both cars had the Black/Ivory interior. I think I
saw that same combo in a green car at one time. I think that color combo
was
used in several different color cars. Not sure of exactly which ones.

Bob,

Mega-dittos to all the kind words extended from people along the list.

I have a standard 3.55 to 1 differential that was used with all 1955 Chevys

with Powerglide transmissions (according to the manual). It is presently
making a noise in the rear end at very low speed. I recently changed out
the wheel bearings on both sides, the bearings being pressed on by my
reputable auto parts place nearby. I cannot believe they pressed the
things
on backwards but will all this discussion I think I will go down and ask
them
about the installation specifically.

What I am wondering is if total rebuild kits for these rear-ends are
available? I would prefer to purchase this kit from a vendor somewhere
along
this list if their price can beat Classic Chevy International or Danchuk.

The shop manual calls for a special tool to use to pull the part which
attaches to the front end of the pinion gear shaft. I have never taken one

of these things apart and am a little leary of doing it by myself without
some guidance. The manual also calls for shims to be used to make sure the

ring gear meshes properly with the pinion. Do these shims come in the
rebuild kit?

They also warn against banging the front seal in with a hammer -- again
calling for a special tool.

Although I hate to ask, does Classic Chevy International have a rebuild
primer that would report tips beyond what is in the shop manual?

Any guidance from list members on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

If this truly is a tricky rebuild, I will pay someone else to do the job.
But if I could save the money by doing it myself -- well, you know how it

is.

Hi Bob:

To Clint from Michigan: Yes you can bolt the seat from a 4 door into your 2

door wagon. Your Sweetie's dad will appreciate the fact that you won't be
able to get her into the back of the car. Jay

Editor's note. Jay, do you suppose one of the reasons the 50s bath tub
Nashs were popular with teenagers was that the seats folded down to make a
bed?

I am so excited, after rat holeing enough money from my wife to find and
buy
my dream fixer upper. I purchased a 4 door 57 with a 56 front end and a
cadillac tail. I look at it and my stomach just flutters with dreams of
just
what it could be. I just hope I can live long enough to see it happen. I
soon
will paint it semi-gloss black ( like my favorite truck paint color), I
like
custom stuff and hope to get my neighbor Juan to help with the interior.
this is where I need help. Does anybody know where I can buy some little
colored dingle balls that hang around the roof interior on a really nice
puffed up crushed velvet headliner? I been lucky in my find and want it to
come out nice as some of those cars out in Calif. This beauty has a amc
flathead 6, which I hope to get some hi-temp paint for, what color is it
supposed to be? Somebody did a good job on all the glass and replaced it
with
plastic which will be there forever. I cannot decide if I want to put a
scoop
over the hole in the hood, what do you think? Juan suggested fiberglassing
in
a cardboard box for direct airflow to my 1 barrel. It has 2 , 12 volt
rotating fans mounted for front and rear air, although I think somebody
added
that and they are not original. All I need to finish this baby is some
really
good mopar parts.

ALL front drums on 55-57 cars had a heat dissipation spring on the outer
rim. This includes ALL 15 inch and 14 inch rims (the drums were the same
size). There was no spring on the rear drums.

light green and ivory"

In 56 the stock interior is black and ivory, regardless of the exterior
paint color(s). Optional interiors could be ordered to match your
exterior color scheme.

The springs on the drums are to stop vibrations that cause a squealing
sound . When drums are machined you will see the tech put a rubber band
around the drum for the same reason . I think this was done as far back
as 49 , maybe farther .

URGENT LEGISLATIVE ALERT

Legislation to Repeal Old Car Emissions Exemption Introduced in
California Senate

As predicted, legislation has been introduced in the California Senate to
repeal the state's current rolling emissions test exemption for vehicles 30
years old and older. S.B. 1172 repeals the current pro-hobbyist exemption
and replaces it with a static exemption for pre-1974 vehicles. S.B. 800
repeals the current exemption and replaces it with a static exemption for
pre-1975 vehicles.

However, S.B. 800 was introduced by Sen. Maurice Johannessen (a long-time
friend of the hobby) and we believe strongly that this bill will be amended
to remove the repeal language. At this point, we do not believe that S.B.
800 poses a threat to the hobby. Therefore,

We Urge You to Contact Your State Senators Immediately to Oppose S.B. 1172

· Existing law in California exempts all pre-1974 vehicles from emissions
testing until 2003. After 2003, vehicles 30-years old and older will be
exempt from emissions testing.

· California's current emissions testing exemption recognizes the minimal
impact of vehicles 30-years old and older on vehicle emissions and air
quality.

· Vehicles 30-years old and older constitute a small portion of the overall
vehicle population (currently less than 3% of the over 23 million vehicles
in California) and are a poor source from which to look for emissions
reduction.

· Antique and classic vehicles are overwhelmingly well-maintained and
infrequently driven (about one-third the miles each year as a new vehicle).

· Legislators and regulators are feeling the heat from a failed effort to
meet air quality goals and are looking for a convenient scapegoat. The old
car hobby should not carry the burden of their mistakes!

Contact your state senators to oppose S.B. 1172. To find out who your
state
senators are, contact the California Senate general information line at
916/445-4311. This information can also be accessed via the Internet at
