>From the 10-19-00 issue of Old Cars Weekly:

Many folks complain about the starter being belligerent when hot and not
turning over . In the Q&A section of the above newspaper a reader claims
that Delco-Remy makes a part (still) 1951002 that is called an assist
spring. It is installed between the armature windings and the starter
drive. The reader claimed that with this cone shaped spring he never had
hot starter problems again.

Does anyone have any hints on how to remove water stains from the

Hi all, it's me with the 1964 SS Impala needing some advice. I am thinking

about getting the shocks/springs redone on my car. Should I get them from
a
Chevy reproduction store like CARS 1, Late Great Chevy etc. or should I let

the brake guy who is going to do the job get them for me? Is it better to
get reproduction parts or newer parts for new Chevys? Any advice would be
appreciated. Thankyou :)

Editor's note. A recent conversation with a 30 year old female relative
really put me
in my place when it comes to music. I mentioned Pat Boone and she said who
was that?
Since she did not know who Pat Boone was, I said have you ever heard of
Elvis? She said sure.
He is the guy that marries people in Las Vegas. When I asked her if she
ever hear of he Beach Boys,
she said sure. My dad has some of Phil and Don's records.

This is in response to Jim Wargowski and his 605 conversion
project. I too am going through this same conversion and was curious as to
why a manufacturer hasn't already come up with a simpler or more complete
conversion. I'm waiting on a replacement column so that I can complete my
conversion to power steering. Hope your project is going well! Another
question; is there a product or a kit that is used to repair your old
steering wheel? I would like to retain the stock interior look. I am
slowly converting to a crate 350 with a 700r4 and I would like to keep the
shifter on the stock column with the stock steering wheel.
Thanks for all of your help, Bob!

I BOUGHT MY 1962 CORVETTE IN 1975 IN WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NEW YORK. SINCE
THEN I HAVE TRIED TO TRACE ITS ROOTS WITHOUT MUCH LUCK. I HAVE FOUND THE
OWNER WHO BOUGHT THE CAR IN 1971, A JAMES KEGLER, WHO SAID THAT HE GOT THE
CORVETTE FROM SOMEONE IN PEEKSKILL, NEW YORK, BUT HE DOESNıT REMEMBER THE
PERSONıS NAME.

I HAVE TRIED SEARCHING THE OBVIOUS, MOTOR VEHICLES, GENERAL MOTORS,
INSURANCE COMPANIES ETC. I HAVE PLACED ADS. PUT UP FLYERS AT SHOWS IN THAT
AREA, MADE A LOT OF CALLS AND TALKED TO A LOT OF PEOPLE IN TWENTY-FIVE
YEARS. STILL I CANıT GET OVER THIS HURDLE FROM 1971 BACK TO 1962.

MY CAR WAS ORIGINALLY A FUELIE, AND HONDURAS MAROON WITH BLACK INTERIOR,
AND A FACTORY INSTALLED HARDTOP. LATER IT WAS PAINTED BLACK, RAISED UP
WITH REAR AIR SHOCKS AND PIECES OF I-BEAM PLACED BETWEEN THE FRAME AND
FRONT CROSS MEMBER. A 1967 CORVETTE BIG BLOCK TYPE HOOD SCOOP WAS
INSTALLED AND AT SOME POINT AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WITH A PONTIAC HIS
AND HER GATE SHIFTER WAS ADDED TO REPLACE THE ORIGINAL FOUR SPEED
TRANSMISSION.

DOES ANYONE OUT THERE REMEMBER THIS CORVETTE OR CAN ANYONE GIVE ME MORE
IDEAS ON HOW I CAN TRACE ITS HISTORY.

I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO FIND ITS ORIGINAL 327 FUELIE ENGINE. I WOULD
POSSIBLY BE INTERESTED IN BUYING A CORRECT 1962 FUEL INJECTED ENGINE AND OR
EVEN A COMPLETE FUEL INJECTION UNIT.

This is in regards to Richard vs flushing his fuel
tank; Richard; is this the original fuel tank for the
vehicle in question? Just based on my experience with
my 56 Chevy; I had the tank pulled & had the original
tank flushed out; after a few days reinstalled it; and
it ran ok for a short period, than I began to have the
same related fuel deficiency problem, and knowing
everything else was replaced new from the tank to the
carb, I again pulled the tank again, and after having
it flushed again, noticed more rust particles were
coming out, I junked the old tank, and purchased a new
tank from Seattle classic parts and the 56 Chevy has
ran beautiful ever since. Good Luck with your Classic
Chevy, Richard.

Gary

Editor's note. I had the same experience on a Buick I once owned. It seems
to me that once a fuel
tanks starts to rust, the best thing you can do is junk it.

If anyone is looking for a brand new electrical switch for the

Jim, yes you have to shorten the steering shaft, the shift tube and the
outer steering column. It is a pretty good job and unless you are a good
welder it could be difficult.
The amount that you take out is not 4 inches on all models. I was going to
cut one for a 57 chevy that I later sold to Mark Bach in Arizona, following
CCIs instructions. After completing the job I found that it was too short.
I
called CCI to find out the problem, then was I told that the example in the
book was for a 55 and they thought that all of them were all the same (not
so). Later I found out that the 55 and 56 firewall are the same but the 57
firewall is different. After I ruined the one I had, I got another, did my
own measuring, cut and welded it and it fit perfectly. Now I have one for a
55 or 56.
There is a place in Athens Georgia that you can buy the modified 605 box
and
modified column for whichever car that you are working on. Their name is
Double Nickle

Hope this helps, Wade Watts

Jerry, in reference to your question about cutting tops off hardtop and
making convertibles out of them, it happened.
I have a friend whose dad used to race at Darlington, S. C. back in the
fifties and General Motors gave his dad a brand new 56 chevy two door
hardtop to race.
My friend remembers them driving the car around for a little while then
taking a torch and cutting the top off to run in races at different tracks.
Boy, what if us backyard racers had that kind of clout with G M today.

Need some guidance. I have a Hurst shifter that I want to put in a 57
Chevy.
I realize there is a specific shifter arm (handle) for the 5-7 Chevy.
However I have one that I'd like to use if possible. The shifter arm is 11
1/2" in height, it starts to curve at the 7 1/2" height the total curvature
projects 3 3/4"-centerline of arm to threaded portion of shifter for the
knob. Can this be used with the bench seat? I'm not concerned if the seat
can't go forward completely just so there is some travel for the seat (
middle position to max position) and that the shifter has full function.
This Hurst has the welded arm-not the bolt on. As an option, if necessary,
can the arm be modified to work? The bench seat must remain in the car.
Thanks for any info.

Greetings from Nashville, TN, Bob,

As always, I enjoy reading your weekly e-mails and particularly the "For
Sale" listings, as they seem to be a pretty good indication of the
marketplace on our favorite car(s).

Sure, there are those who have cars they would love to 'part with' for
$35,000 to $45,000, even higher in rare situations, but the far greater
majority seem to be in the $15,000 to $25,000 range, some even less if
you're
willing to do a lot of work. I would prefer to think, however, that if God
intended for me to be mechanically inclined, I would have been born with a
wrench in my hand! Unfortunately, that was not the case:)

I'm a huge fan of the Tri-Five years, '55-'57, as it was not only a
wonderful
period for cars, but for 'life' in general. Growing up in the mid and late
50s, early 60s--prior to Kennedy's assassination and Viet Nam--was
fabulous.
Not that all families were fortunate enough to live in a "Ozzie and
Harriet"
or "Father Knows Best" world, but some of us were actually so blessed.

The cars, perhaps, were only challenged by the music that came out of that
period: Elvis, Chuck Berry, Rick Nelson, The Coasters, Annette and Frankie
Avalon, The Beach Boys, and others, who's music will live on just like
those
great cars all of us seem to crave.

I still have my 'black plate' California car, the '48 Buick Sedannette I've

mentioned in previous listings. I'd love to trade this trophy car in on a
Chevy. So, hopefully, one of your readers will either have a car that they
will trade, or partially trade, or an aggressive dealer will give me a
call.

As a 'bonus,' I'm going to add a little nostalgia to the deal: a rare,
vintage (and original) Beach Boys poster from one of my '63/'64 era
concerts.
The poster, by itself, is worth $2,500--if you wish to part with it.
Otherwise, hang it with pride in your den, music room, office, or auto
showroom and watch the reaction!

I was pleased to be invited to a special ceremony honoring The Beach Boys
with a "Lifetime Achievement Award" presented by the National Academy of
Recording Arts and Sciences at last month's Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.
The
ceremony, held the night before the national TV show, also honored Tony
Bennett, Bob Marley, Sammy Davis, Jr., Les Paul and The Who.

Thanks again for the great weekly reports, Bob. Have a great day!

Sincerely,

Fred Vail

Hi Bob-

Have a question for the list members: I recently bought a 57 2 door
hardtop. The previous owner removed the body to clean and paint the frame,
then just set the body back on the frame, unbolted and without the rubber
mounts.
How do you properly set a body back on the frame if you haven't marked
where the shims were placed? Is there a method to determine if the body is
level or not? Any help would be greatly appreciated? I just want to make
sure I take the right steps before permanently re mounting the body.
Thanks and once again great job on the list.
