Wade , I was interested to read about the column you cut 4 inches and
found it to be too short. I bought a tilt column for a 57 and now am
glad I hadn't cut it yet. I had the job done to CCI's specs for my 55
and it worked well. Can you tell us what the correct lengths are to cut
out for the 57? Thanks, Bill.

Hi Bob,
My name is Bob Case. I live in Orange CA. I have recently purchased a 57
chevy and would like to join the list.
Purchasing the car has been a conclusion to a 30 year dream of mine. It
should be delivered in about a week. It is coming down from Sacramento
where I purchased it from. I can't wait to be able to drive the car around.
I was wondering if you are a member of a Old Chevy club or if there is
one in the area that you know about? I would like to join a club
eventually. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again! Bob 714-633-9663

Editor's note. There is an Orange County Classic Chevy Club and a Los
Angeles Classic Chevy club. They are both good organizations. I recommend
every TriFive owner join a club. They will be a great help to you. There
are members of both of these clubs on this list. If you would like to
join, just post a message on this list asking a club member to contact you.
Good luck with your new car.

I am faced with at least one horn on my 57 not working. I wonder is
there a method to repair these horns? One horn doesn't make any sound
and one makes only a loud blast but not quite a horn note. In all the
literature I have never seen any discussion on repairing the horns
themselves. Is it possible or practical?

Bob,

I am looking for a expert who knows how to fix the handling problems on
my 57 Chevy in or near San Diego, California. The problem that I am
having is the car wonder, slop in the steering and no road feel.

My 57 was completely restored approximately 10 years ago with all new
front suspension parts, upgraded to front disk brakes, ball joints and
etc. My original 57 steering box was modified to make a 605 steering
box. It never has any road feel, it wondered and had slop in the
steering wheel. I have approximately 7,000 miles on it and it has been
aligned.

Any help you con provide will be highly appreciated.

I can be contacted at erhlsmith@home.com

Thanks,

Hi Bob, Your doing a great job with this site, I don't know how you find
the
time, THANKS!!!
I have a question for the site, and I'm hoping I can get some help.
After searching for e-z-eye curved glass for my 55-wagon, I finally found a

nice pair. The problem is that they have rust streaks on them, and I
haven't
been able to remove it. Does anyone have any experience with this, I would
really appreciate some help.
You can e-mail me at ....chvywagon55@cs.com, or answer me here.

I am looking for info regarding a cast iron powerglide torque converter.
It
looks like most converters except it is two piece with multiple bolts
holding the halves together. I want to rebuild and reuse the powerglide
but
what about the converter. Can it or should it be "rebuilt" ? If so, any
source(s) to do this ? If not, suggestion(s) on replacing it to still use
the original powerglide ?
Also, need both cable retractors units for a 1956 Chevrolet 4 door wagon
tailgate.
Thanks in advance.

Greetings, Bob,

A quick question? How do you get the 'blind copy' thing to work?
I would like to send out e-mails without having to scroll down an entire
list
of folks. Any hints?

I am not exactly sure how you do it on AOL but in general when you create
e-mail, there should be box or a pull down menu that lets you check "blind
carbon copy" or words to that effect. Any AOL users on this list that can
give a better answer.

Greetings from "Twang Town, USA," Bob,

God, I hope Al Gore stays in his 'true home,' inside the beltway in
Washington, DC. Anyone who mistakes him for a Tennessean needs to do their
homework. Born and raised in DC, educated in New England, this guy was an
'insider' from the time he was delivered:)

As to the musical question: Was "Help Me, Rhonda," about a real girl, it
was
probably a composite of several. Brian, the 'all-American' boy that he was,

did his share of dating in and around the family home in Hawthorne, CA. He
'cruised' Hawthorne Blvd., hung out at the Foster's Freeze, and actually
wrote--or partially wrote--many of his songs there, including "Fun, Fun,
Fun."

Capitol Records is re-releasing re-mastered versions of The Beach Boys
great
albums this year. Check out your favorite music store for updated
information. Also, this coming March 29, TNT is honoring Brian with a live
show--at world famous Radio City Music Hall-- featuring special guests
Elton
John, Paul Simon, Matthew Sweet, Aimee Mann, Sir George Martin, and actor
Dennis Hopper. It is being filmed for a special Turner Network television
special to air in June or July, I believe.

In any of you are in the New York area, tickets go on sale today, Monday,
March 12. The entire "Pet Sounds" album will be presented 'live' in its
entirety, with a full orchestra. Enjoy the show!

Fred Vail
Nashville, TN

Editor's note. I saw in the Sunday paper that the Beach Boys (the current
version) were going to be in Anaheim on June 3rd. I stopped by and got
tickets today. The tickets were almost sold out.

Jim,

Regarding 605 steering conversion. Contact Mike McGaughy's Classic Chevy
5680 W. Barstow Fresno, CA 93722 (559)226-8196 FAX(559)277-0457 I don't
think they have a web site, but the quality of their 605 steering parts
appears better than most others I have seen. I don't think they have a
"kit", but they sell all the parts and can tell you what you need. As
others have replied, you do need to shorten your steering column, or
replace
it with a tilt column. Mike's can have it yours shortened or sell you an
Ididit column, or a shortened one with a core charge.

Hi Bob:

Super list. Sometimes it gets a bit off center for me with talk of some
forgotten song, commercial or banter about structural engineers. But, no
problem, easy enough for me to just zip on by given the power of the
Internet!

Anyway, the very best seat to substitute (the stock seat is miserable no
matter what you do to it) into a custom/modified classic is from an '86
Mercury Grand Marquee(?) (I refuse to use the identical Ford Crown Vic!).
This thing is the right size (not too tall which makes many seats look
stupid & good width), fits to the floor very well and is very sturdy with
solid mechanisms. It is a 50/50 split bench with dual fold down armrests.
The seat belts feed up through the base of the seat nicely so that they are

invisible from the back. Plus 6 way power on both sides. I've bought a
couple of these over the years for chump change & if your really lucky you
can find a complementary color of either leather or velour that will
suffice until you get the interior done. The four door version that I have
in my '56 Sport Sedan (the 4 door hardtop, coolest model ever made) is
especially nice as it also has levers on both sides for laying the seat
backs down.

Readily available down at the "bone yard" as they built billions of these
things.

I hope that information helps someone.

Dear Bob,

Your question a while back re the subject of "Mules",
as the term is commonly used in the industry, caused me to recall the first
time
I had any involvement with such. I didn't have the time to set the story
down at
the time you posed the question, though. Now, I can take a bit more time,
so
here goes.

Back in the Fall of 1962, one of the more significant new vehicle
introductions
was that of the 1963 Buick Riviera. This was not really the first of
General
Motors' personal luxury cars, but it was certainly the most unique up to
that
time. I also recall this one, because it was certainly the first, and one
of
only a few, that I attended. My attendance was quite by accident,
incidentally.
I had just started at General Motors Institute in Flint, MI. The
introduction
was being held in Flint and one of the Alumni from the Fraternity where I
was a
house-guest had obtained a number of free passes. Several of us, put them
to
good use (the free Manhattans and other mixed drinks were excellent and
there
were a number of attractive young ladies present - several cars too, as I
recall).

GMI was operated on a co-op basis, by the way. At the time, students
attended
classes in Flint for six weeks followed by a six-week work section at a
sponsoring GM facility. Two six-week school and two six-week work sections
constituted a semester. Anyway, by the Fall of 1963 I was making
satisfactory
progress at GMI, and was assigned to a six-week work section in the Fisher
body
Central Engineering Metal Shops in Warren, MI. The first thing I noted was
that
the entire shop was working overtime (at least 45 and often 53 hours a
week).
At "time and a half", this generated a significant increase in take-home
pay
even at our low students rate of pay ($2.69 / hour as I recall).

About the second thing I noted was that the major activity underway was the
hand
build of six prototype bodies to be used in the fabrication of some test
mules.
The distinctive shape of the Riviera body was immediately recognizable -
even
without the front-end sheet metal. Looking more closely, though, I soon
discovered that these mules were not for any ordinary Riviera. While the
production Riviera used a separate body and frame, these bodies were being
fabricated with some substantial box sections as an integral part of the
rear of
the welded underbody. Toward the front, mounts were incorporated which were
obviously intended to attach to a stub frame. As students, we worked with
the
metal modelers and fab men in forming the prototype parts using hammers on
hard
maple forms. These were then assembled to the mating panels with sheet
metal
screws for a trial fit, and later welded in place. The most significant
thing
that struck me though, was that the rather deep drive line tunnel of the
Riviera
was missing from the underbody. The underbody being constructed was
entirely
flat. Obviously, this body was being built for a vehicle that would be
front-wheel-drive! Keep in mind that there hadn't been any US-built front
wheel
drive cars since the '37 Cord, so this construction was quite unusual at
the
time. [The trunk compartment was unaltered from that of the stock Riviera,
by
the way, so that it was evident that the powerplant was not going to be
located
in the rear.]

For many years, I had a faded phantom-view "Ozalid" (or blueprint) as a
souvenir
of my involvement in this effort. It may still be around someplace, but I
sort
of doubt it. From the length of time that it typically took from prototype
to
production, we speculated that these units were most likely intended for a
Riviera to be marketed starting in the '66 model year. Discussion with
other
students later on (who co-oped at Buick Motor Division) lead us to believe
that
the division was then also working on a new V8 engine (to replace the "nail
valve" in use since 1953).

As things later developed, we were relatively close in pur speculation. The
prototypes, or "mules" were actually amongst the earliest built to test the
driveline intended for the '66 Olds Toronado and '67 Caddy Eldorado. The
new
Buick V8 engine debuted as a 430 cubic inch unit on the '67 models. Sorry,
guys,
there is no Chevy connection to this story. There were some full-size
experimental '67 Pontiac Station Wagons built with the Toronado FWD
powertrain,
though - and this is the same body used for Chevys' full-size wagon at the
time.

Nomenclature in the automotive industry is continuously undergoing change.
Nowadays, terms other than "mule" are in more common use. More typically, a
program will consist of what are termed Alpha builds, Beta builds, etc.
Obviously, the Alpha builds are the earliest, with the Beta and subsequent
builds being completed with more production-type tooling and being closer
to
final production intent.

I hope some of the above is of interest. As always, thanks for all your
hard and
free work on putting this list together for us enthusiasts. Wishing you and
your
wife the best.

On the same subject, are old TV shows owned by someone or are they in the
