Response to Howard Herring's question about a headliner cleaner. I have
used a product my wife uses for carpet cleaning, etc. on my headliner and
it
seems to do the job. My stains appeared to be water so don't know if this
product will work on all or any stain, you may want to give it a try.
It's called "FOLEX" instant carpet spot remover - you can buy it at any
market (if your in Calif. we bought it at VON'S. Hope it works for you,

I am in need of a drivers side vent window assembly in decent condition for
my
55 Chevy, 210, 2 door sedan. One that does not need re-chroming and is in
useable condition. The door I have has bad rust in the bottom so I also am
looking for a good used drivers side door. I would like to find one within
500
miles of Marion VA. I don't trust Greyhound on the long haul.

>>RE:Below;
'm thinking of changing out the original rear end from my '57 BelAir, and
I'm wondering what width rear end matches it. I'm wanting to go with a
Ford
9"
or possibly a 10 or 12 bolt Chevy. I know there are a lot of you that have
gone through this swap, and know what to do and not to do. I would
appreciate
any help I could get on this swap. Thanks, Bob Ford 1drag_racer@msn.com

Bob,

I've enjoyed my rear-end from a Buick Grand National in my '56 Delray.
It's
a posi-traction with a 3:42 gear ratio behind my 406 mild small block and
350 Turbo trans. I've heard it said you can also swap the Buick GN gears
into an early '70's Nova rear axle housing.

Bob, thanks for the list, it is always useful & fun to read.
Please
post and help me find these parts. I need a passenger side rear hatch
support for a '56 sedan delivery, Nomad & wagon supports won't work, as the
entire hatch and window as one unit lifts, much like modern hatchback cars.
I am also looking for a new window for the rear as the current one has
etched bow tie emblems in it. I would also like a new chrome power
steering
pump that attaches to the generator for a '56 BelAir HT with 265 corvette
motor, my pump is going bad. I would really like to modernize, but don't
want to get rid of the billet pulleys etc, and go to a dual pulley system.
If any members have an idea on how to switch to a single belt as it is now
set up, and run a modern pump and alternator please tell me how. Members
with parts or help can email me at
.........bleeper@home.com...............Thank you. As an added note, I am
a
very active member in our area club " Rose City Classic Chevys" a 19 year
old club specializing in Tri-5 Chevys in the Portland Oregon and Vancouver
Washington area, check out our web site

for area charities thru cruise-ins, fund drives etc. Our site list many of
our hosted cruise-ins, photos, links, and newsletter. Our club as so many
times in the past years, recently took 1st place at the 45th Annual
Portland
Roadster Show for best club display, and next week will be in Eugene Oregon
at their Auto-Rama trying to repeat the victory. We have over 80 families
in our club, and many of us travel all over the west attending shows,
events, collector car auctions. See the site, you will understand. I have
also attached a photo of my wifes and my collection of Tri-5 Classics.

This is for Russell with the 57 that has steering problems. I put a 605
steering box in my 55 Delray and had the same problems you describe. I
went through a lot of trouble resolving those problems. It turns out that
there were actually numerous problems with my conversion and depending on
how the 605 box was modified, they could exist in yours. I will outline
each problem I had and describe my fix.

1. I originally started with a box converted by an after market vendor.
Since this is where the troubles started, I will not name the vendor. The
vendor welds the lower part of a 55 steering box to the bottom of a 605 box
and then installs a modified 55 sector shaft. The two parts of the
steering box were not correctly aligned when welded and it caused the
sector shaft to bind when fully assembled. There is no fix for this once
it has been welded. If your conversion is not a welded unit, then you
probably have a bracket welded to the frame supporting the 605 box and you
will have the bottom part of the original steering box bolted to the frame
in the original mounting holes. If this is the case, you could have
binding between the upper and lower halves, resulting in the same
non-responsive steering problem. So the first step is to make sure there
is no binding of the sector shaft.

2. The excess slop indicates to me that the sector shaft used in your
conversion is an original 55 shaft with the outer teeth removed. While
that shaft appears to fit correctly, in most cases, the teeth are a few
thousandths of an inch too fat causing the lash to be tight when turned
left or right and loose in the straight ahead position, which is just the
opposite of what you need. This problem can be fixed by carefully removing
a few thousandths from the outside edge of the outer teeth. Once the fit
between the sector shaft and the worm gear is corrected to achieve the
proper fit, you will be able to adjust the lash to zero while in the
straight ahead position and not have any bind when turned left or right.

3. Once you are sure that the steering box is satisfactory, you need to
make sure the front end alignment is adjusted to provide 3 to 4 degrees of
caster. The first step is to make sure that there are no worn bushings,
ball joints etc. The shop manual specifications for stock classics for
caster is zero degrees plus or minus 1/2 degree. This is not enough for
the 605 conversion. The problem here is that you probably can't achieve
the desired caster unless you modify or bend the upper a-arms. You can buy
replacement cross shafts that will help, but generally will not provide for
enough caster. It is common practice to press the upper a-arms making them
slightly longer. I did this and was able to obtain three degrees caster.

I acquired another welded box from the same vendor, made the corrections
and my Delray now drives very well. I hope you can benefit from my
experiences.

I am faced with at least one horn on my 57 not working. I wonder is
there a method to repair these horns? One horn doesn't make any sound
and one makes only a loud blast but not quite a horn note. In all the
literature I have never seen any discussion on repairing the horns
themselves. Is it possible or practical?
<<<<

Take the domed covers off your horns. Inside you'll see a set of contact
points. Clean them with fine emery paper. They can be adjusted for
operation
and loudness. Some have an adjusting screw, on others you must bent the
support frame a little. It's really not difficult at all. I LIGHTLY bead
blasted the insides of mine but be real careful if you try this. It would
be
easy to destroy the varnish type insulation on the coils and short them
out.

To Lisa & Richard,
A 64' Impala has coil springs, not leafs, so you can't get them re-arced.
You need to replace them. A new pair of rear springs shouldn't cost you
more
than $100, plus installation, which shouldn't be much either. They are very

easy to replace. I did them on my 62' Impala and it took me about 15
minutes.

In regard to the rust stains on glass: I wonder if the "CLR" (Calcium,
Lime,
Rust) cleaner that is shown on TV would work? I haven't tried it, but it
might work. Anyone ever used the stuff? Another thought is to use the
glass
polishing kit that Eastwood sells. Or maybe Bon Ami (I heard on "Shadetree

Mechanic" that Bon Ami is a good glass cleaner).

Regarding the Powerglide torque converter rebuild: I don't know if it
should
be rebuilt, but if anyone decides to try it, I have a copy of Motor's
Automatic Transmission Manual which covers all kinds of transmissions.
There
are sections on troubleshooting, adjustments, and overhauls. The cast iron

Powerglide is included. So are the aluminum PGs, Fords, Buicks, GMC, Olds,

Pontiacs, and even Jeeps and Ramblers. They even include the Corvair
Powerglide. I can make copies or try to find answers to specific
questions.

<< A quick question? How do you get the 'blind copy' thing to work?
I would like to send out e-mails without having to scroll down an entire
list of folks. Any hints?
. >>

I have an answer. I am an AOL user and use blind copy a lot. I use the
Mac
version of AOL...the Windows version should work pretty much the same. Here

is how I do AOL blind-copy on Mac:

1. Open the address book. While holding down the shift key, highlight the

names you wish to mail to;
2. Double-click the blind-copy button.

AOL will then open a new mail document with the names of the persons you
selected "blind-copied" into the "mail-to" section of the email. All you
have to do is add the text to the body of the email and click "send." What

could be easier.

Your recipients will not have lists of headers and footers to scroll
through,
and their email addresses will not be spread about the Internet for
spammers
to get ahold of.

Don't use the "forward" button. It makes blind-copying much more
complicated
and copies all the headers and footers cluttering the old email into the
new
email. Instead, follow the above steps to get your new document, then
click
your cursor in the "body" section so the blinker is inserted there, go to
the
email document you want to forward and select the text you want to send.
Drag this text to the new document body (it will attach to the blinker you
pre-inserted in the body...remember?) Now click send. You have sent a
short, clean document without long lists of headers and footers and without

spreading your friends addresses around.

The 3/15/2001 - 11:52 PM distribution of the list contains a recommendation
from
"Richard" that Lisa take her car to a good spring shop and have them re-arc
the
springs (or re-arch as we say in this part of the country).

I'm not certain of exactly how "Richard" meant the comment, but this will
likely
be difficult to accomplish on Lisa's '64 Impala - which would be an
extremely
rare car if it had any leaf springs! Possibly "Richard" would be interested
in

Hey Bob & All:

The "other" Bob Ford asked about replacement rearends in our Classics. An
old article from Classic Chevy World gave the following info: For a
rearend
housing that is 2-3/4" narrower than stock, go with a '65-'67 Nova
(available in both 10-bolt & 12-bolt!). The same width as a Classic
(53-1/8" backing plate to backing plate, or 60-3/8" from drum face to drum
face) is '66-'67 Chevelle, '67-'81 Camaro, or '68-'76 Nova. If you can
afford the extra width (1-1/4"), you can use one from a '68-'72 Chevelle or
'70-'72 Monte Carlo. I don't know about the widths of F__d 9" rears.

This resulted from my own research, as I, too, am scouting a Nova rearend
for my '57. I figure with the almost 3" narrower dimension, and the leaf
spring pocket kit to move the springs inboard, I should have plenty
clearance on both sides to go with a wider wheel and tire combo. Any of
you
list members anywhere near Reno (like, within 300 miles) have a '65-'67
Nova
third member lying around that you could sell me?
