Bob,
Believe it was Johnie the Bell Hop. You should have seen
the seat and pedals on his car. I saw him one day in the
50's in Hyattsville, Md.

Hartson,
We have a friend who has a '62 fuelie unit that was removed several
(20 or so) years ago. The unit is complete & should work. Think he
wanted $3K for it, but may have sold it by now. Is this something you
are interested in? Believe he may also have the engine, but not sure.
Know he has an engine, but don't remember what he said it came from or
what displacement it is. We can inquire for you when we see him. Please
advise. We also know some FI dealers who WILL have a '62 unit, but be
ready for a big price.
On another subject. You might also try to find out if any of the
insurance agencies that were in business in 1971, in Peekskill, are
still around. We were able to find the original buyer of our '55 210
hardtop by looking through an insurance agency records from 1962! The
smaller the town, the better your chances.

Editor's note. Anyone know if you can just take the intake and carb off of
a 283 and replace it with
a Fuel Injection unit or is the conversion much more complicated?

The answer (and I don't even smoke) is cigarettes - "Call for Philip
Morris!"
(And the question was "What product was advertised by a short man in a bell
hop
uniform shouting Call for P-----M-----")

Editor's note. Cigarettes companies have an interesting marketing problem.
Their products kills 1000 people a day so they have to find 1000 new
customers each day just to stay even in sales.

Bob: your questions are generally very challenging, but the question about
the ad seems easy; Maybe I'm just older than I think.

The ad was for cigarettes and the complete phrase was "call for Phillip
Morris". Selling Lucky Strikes, I believe.

I am delighted by the increased posting of replies to questions to your
site. Thanks folks, keep it up!!!!!

The answer to your trivia question is call for Phillip Morris.

The front section from a Dodge dakota 2wd pickup works very well under the
front of a 55-57. It can be grafted on right where the factory seamed on
the
original front section. It gives you manual or power rack and pinion and 11

1/2 disc brakes. I reused the front frame horns off the original frame
and
fabricated a new radiator support and motor mounts for a 502/502.
When finished off it looks factory installed, no one has a clue what it's
from.

I've bought several 700 R4s and usually only pay $250 at the local wrecking

yard. The way I hooked up the electronics in our car was to get the stand
alone wiring harness, vacuum switch and check valve from a early GM pickup

that didn't use a computer but had either a 350 lock up trans or a 700R4
trans. It works fine, the converter locks and it shifts to 4th gear. Some
of
the vacuum switches were adjustable to control converter lockup based on
vacuum.

Bob; Could you please post these parts.
Thanks

Bob, et al

I have a 57 convertible that I picked up about 6 months ago. It is
stock, with a 283 4 bbl, power glide, power steering. It appears that
it is an older restoration, probably about 10-15 years ago. My problem
is that I can't make up my mind on what to do with it. I'm torn between
leaving it stock and putting in an upgraded drive train with disk
brakes.

Right now it can be driven. But it sat for several years prior to me
buying it. So I am having lots of problems that seem to always appear
with cars that don't get driven regularly.

I think I would like to put in a 350 with a 700R tranny and disk
brakes. I want a reliable driver and I don't think I can have that with
the original drivetrain. I don't want a hot rod, just a cruizer.....

How about a little feedback from you folks out there. Give me pros and
cons to help me decide. I have had lots of old chevys but this is my
first 57.

Thanks for any help offered.

Hi All, In response to inquiries about swapping different rearends
into Tri-Fives I can add a little insight. I am familiar with what is
available out there in the junk yard land. First of all, an original
rearend is 60" drum face to drum face. '66-'67 Nova rearends are 58" wide
which allow for wider tires. If you want to maintain the original width,
'68 up Nova type GM cars have a rearend approximately the same width as
original. As for Ford 9" rear ends early Broncos have a rear width of
58"(approx) but the pinion is offset and not centered. The Lincoln
Versailles and some Granadas and Monarchs used a 9" which had disc brakes.
This rearend is also offset(1inch), measures 58"(approx) wide. I would NOT
recommend it because the disc brakes are HUGE and parts are expensive. I
have found that most all Ford rearends have the pinion offset from center.
I have just been through this whole episode with my '57 and I finally
narrowed a 9' Ford to my specifications which is 59" with the pinion
centered. I didn't want to get too narrow and get the inside of tire and
wheel too close to the leaf springs. I intend to use 8" wheels with the
same offset as Corvette rallys and wanted just a little more wheel to
quarter panel clearance. By making the rearend 59" wide drum face to drum
face, I gained an additional 1/2 inch clearance on each side. All swaps
require a change of spring perches and the addition of tabs to hold the
rubber bumper retainers if you intend to use the stock suspension
components. I hope that this information will be helpful for other Tri-Five
enthusiasts. Inquiries welcome.
Thanks, Tim

I believe your short man was Johnny the bellhop "calling for Phillip
Morris" - but It sorta came out sounding like Phillip Maurice. That was
back in the days when cigarette advertising was all over the media, and
9 out of 10 doctors who tried Camels went back to women.

On the 8th day HE created the 55 Chevrolet
(and GMC Suburban Pickups)

Bob, that would be Johnny saying "call for Phillip Morris" or as he said, "

Phillip Morries" I grew up in Richmond, VA and every fall we had the
tobacco
festival parade with marching bands, and floats from all the tobacco
companies. Johnny was always riding in the back of a big convertible
yelling
to the crowds. Funny, it's politically incorrect now, but it was great fun
then. Of course, I started smoking at 14 and gave it up 10 years later.
