Lisa,

I have Hagerty Classic car insurance on my 2 1955 BelAirs. It full
coverage, unlimited mileage for under $200.00 per year total.

A lot of car insurance companies can get you Hagerty insurance, but the add
their cut to the price, so I suggest you got to the source at:
http://www.hagerty.com/Direct1/Index.asp

I have not had a claim, but have talked to 2 people that have and they were
happy with the results.

Also, when looking around for new springs for you car make sure you
get Made in the USA as a lot of the none USA springs are not made with good
quality metal.
I went to a local spring shop the last time I needed new springs. But I
have purchased them from PST in New Jersey also
Good luck,

Hello and Thanks Again Bob:
Having grown up in the fifties I enjoy the trivia.
For Ken Weinstein - Top notch mechanic in Richmond, CA is Harold
Hoffman, Hoffman Enterprises (510) 236 0106.
He and son Dave brought my stock 57 Nomad, bought out of storage, back to
life. Excellent mechanics, honest, and hot-rodders at heart (good

Hello Bob,
A dear friend of ours, Dave Kerr just passed away this past weekend. We'd
like to let everyone know that if Dave had any of your stainless for repair
work, please let me know as I will be helping Mrs. Kerr sort things out.
As far as we knew, Dave had only a few local jobs but under the
circumstances we are not thinking too clearly right now and thought posting
this on your list is the best thing to do.

Also Bob, keep posting the trivia questions. We really enjoy the
"lighter" side of your letter. After a hard day at work, your letter is a
great way to un-wind.
Thank you and take care all,

I was wondering if anyone could give me some information and possible a
lead on purchasing a set of 4 wide white wall tires for my 57 chevy? I have
the old polyester tires on the car right now and they need to be replaced.
I like the classic look of the wide white wall tire but would also like to
improve the ride if possible with radials.
Do the radials make that much of a difference in the ride of the car? Does
anyone know of a place where I can purchase them at a reasonable price? I
have priced them and the best price I got so far is around 750.00 for a set
of 4. Is that a good price? I live in orange CA and would like to pick them
up around here if possible.

Also I am considering putting on the original 57 chevy wheel covers with
the center knock offs. I have price them at Danchucks but was wondering if
there is another place where I could pick up a set of them for a better
price. Can you tell me what the "modifaction is that has to be made to the
wheels or wheel covers if you use a non stock wheel?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!! Bob C.

Greetings Bob.... Love the trivia..... I believe Louis wanted to know
which cigarette brand was a silly millimeter longer..... That would be
Chesterfield 101's... Bensen & Hedges (a Phillip Morris product) came
out with a 100 mm. cigarette some time in the 1960's Other companies
soon followed suit... Not to be out done Ligget & Meyers added a filter
to Chesterfield cigarettes and made them 101 mm. or a silly mm. longer
than other competitors brands.... This turned out to be a problem for
the wholesale distributors as the new 101's were too tall and would jam
up the cigarette tax stamping machines..... Another defunct brand had a
familiar name to us Classic Chevy owners... "NOMAD" or maybe they were
called NOMADS" They were made by R.J. Reynolds Company....... I found a
package of these and gave them to a good friend of mine that had a 56
Nomad that he used to show.... He always laid them on the dash when he
would display his car..... The Nomad is long gone to a new home but he
still proudly displays that dried up old pack of smokes in his trophy
case.....I Enjoy the list, trivia and all..... Dave Durchenwald... 56

Regarding Louis comment about the football player tossing one to the kid;
I was not aware that it was voted best.
However, a number of years ago when the pink bunny appeared for Everready,
it won the top award when it was launched; I kinda got away from
advertising
after that and am not sure how subsequent ads were voted, but the concept
did remain very strong for a 1/2 dozen years. It is about "out of energy"
now even though they keep trying to inject it again.

This is in response to Lisa question about insurance.

I have mine with Hagerty...it is inexpensive and pays from dollar 1,
including parts. I've had to use it only once. When I repainted the '57,
I
removed the front windshield and it settled a little after being
reinstalled
- cracked. When I called Hagerty, they said: "get it repaired/replaced and

have them send us the bill. I did and they paid the full boat.
Also, I have all 3 cars under 1 policy and it is even cheaper with multiple

cars.

Hi Bob and list members,

I have been way behind in reading my lists. Catching up, I see Bob is
asking about his occasional trivia questions. Hip! Hip! Hurray! to all who
agree he
should continue to throw them at us. I enjoy them as much as reading the
helpful information
posted on the list.

The trivia is directly connected to our interest in the tri 5's. Most
of us remember these cars when they where new and learned how to drive on
them. The trivia
surrounding the times is just as important. How many of you collect old
advertisements, gas company signs, old hub caps, model cars etc.? The mid
fifties (like most of our
ages) did have a lot going for us as a nation. Warren's posting was sooooo
true
regarding the major change that has taken place in society since then. I
for one will remain
politically incorrect when it comes to acceptance of the things that have
lead to the moral decay
of this great Nation.
Speaking of trivia....remember when each school day started with prayer,
the pledge of allegiance? Or singing the song "America"? Of course not.
These
things all mention God who is no longer allowed in school. No mater what
your religion, the 10
commandments are an excellent guide by which to live.

Yes Bob, please continue to insert the trivia. Even if it includes
reference to cigarettes. If for no other reason than to learn from our
mistakes. If we do not learn
from history, we doomed to repeat it.

If the trivia bothers some list members, they can scroll through it. If
that is too much trouble, move the cursor to the "X" in the upper right
corner and
click! This is your
list and you can run it how you choose! I consider it a privilege to be
a member and it's no problem for me to scroll past anything that is not of
interest
to me personally.

Thank you for the time and effort you put into this forum for the love
of the hobby and anything connected to it.

Kim,

What terrible news to hear about the Azusa Drive in being torn down. I may
live in Virginia now but once I lived in Glendora (Class of 81). I have
seen many movies at the drive in, picking up some food at the "Old" Mc
Donald's or the Arbys. I had been to many flea markets there also. That was
over 15 years ago. Maybe everyone could get together and chain ourselves to
the front gate. First the one in Covina and now this. Oh well, I have to go
and reminisce for a while.

Charlie

Editor's note. For some of the younger list members, you might be
interested in knowing that drive in movies were very controversial when
they first appeared. I worked at one when I was in high school. I still
remember the pickets at the box office with signs that you would go to Hell
if you went to a drive in movie. Oddly, the pickets children were often at
the movie they were picketing.

Hey Bob!

In answer to R. Carron, I'd leave the 350 in and try a Turbo 700 behind it
with one of those aftermarket switch set-ups to operate the locking torque
converter. The 305 would be a bolt in swap, however I'd look at what I
could
do with the 350. What are you using for ignition? And the carburetor?
A 2-barrel carb and old points-style ignition leave a lot of room for
improvement, check out a Summit catalog for ideas for a good ignition
upgrade. And a 4-barrel carb, maybe 600 cfm tops can work wonders..
just shop around and ask questions. Some carbs are available that are
calibrated for maximum fuel mileage. I picked up a good couple miles a
gallon in an '85 Chevy Truck I once owned, running Split-Fire plugs, an
Accel coil and an Edelbrock Performer 600 carb with an gas-mileage
calibration.

However, if you have the budget and the inclination, I think you'll get the
best results running one of the late model fuel-injected engines, such as
the 87-92 350 TPI or 93-97 LT-1. If you decide to give this a try, use a
Camaro/Firebird engine instead of a 'Vette unit, as Camaro/Firebird wiring
harnesses are easier to figure out. Get the Helm shop manual for both
your Classic and the car the engine came out of. Also go to JTR in
Livermore, California www.jagsthatrun.com and get a copy of "Chevy
TPI/TBI Engine Swapping", it costs about 25.00. A lot of work? Yes.
But if it's done right, I'll bet you wind up like me and my '89 Caprice:
Over 100,000 miles on my 350 TPI conversion and a big smile on my
face! (Aftermarket harnesses are available, and getting more plentiful
if you want to go that route.) Also, I'm consistently getting 2-3 MPG
better than the 307 Olds engine that originally came in the car, all on
regular 87 octane gas. And as soon as my schedule and budget permits,
I'll be putting a '93 LT-1/TH700 in my '57 Handyman!

Hi Bob
I need the help of your email tri-fivers! The state of Rhode Island now
charges sales tax on classic car new registrations by book value at good
condition, regardless of what the bill of sale says. This started in
January 2000 and has upset most classic car owners across the state. You
can appeal the value by paying for an appraisal. Now there is a good idea,
pay too much in taxes then pay more to try and get some back!
What I need is for your readers to email me and let me know what
the laws are in their states. My club, the RI Chevy Owners Association , is
spearheading an effort to get the legislature to change this practice and
needs to know what other states are doing.

For David W. A friend recently did the conversion on his '56 BelAir without
the power booster. He said you really had to apply a lot of pedal to stop
the car so he added the power booster. Much better, according to him. Wild

Editor's note. I am not an expert on this subject but I believe all disk
brakes require more power than drums because they have less brake contact
area.

I enjoyed reading Warren's reflections on the past and I must agree that
life
did seem simpler back then, although I don't know from experience because
I'm
only 25 years old! But I am a bit of a history buff and I can imagine how
it
was. Hey, I enjoy driving my '56 Chevy wagon to the drive-in movie
theater!
I must say that it's all somewhat relative. The "rock music" I listen to
is
"devil music" to generations 2 ahead of me, but to many around my age,
Alice
In Chains and Pearl Jam is elevator music. Wearing earings??? Ah, that's
nothing; any and everything on the body that can be pierced is pierced
today.
School shootings were unheard of a few years ago when I was in school.
I'm
thankful for the advances made in television and medicine. One of my
favorite TV shows is The Honeymooners and the ever-hilarious Three Stooges.

Never really got into Laurel and Hardy, but I did enjoy the Marx Brothers!

Time moves on and the way of life is constantly changing. I don't think

there is a point or time period anywhere in the American timeline that one
could point to and say "that was the way to live!" I do think it is good
for
people to be knowledgeable of the past- It makes people respect how life
used
to carry on and it makes them realize that they don't have it so tough in
life; that life is never totally peachy. This is just my take on Warren's
posting... I did enjoy it, Warren!

Amen to Roy Nagel! I drove my '56 210 wagon for a few years as a stock
car,
except for radial tires. Drum brakes worked just as good as disk brakes.
I
ran highway speeds up to 80mph with the 6cyl/3speed. All of these units
were
totally rebuilt of course. Can't understand what the big fuss over having
and driving an original car is; why they must be modified to enjoy them?
Chevrolet built them this way as a tried-and-true vehicle.

we had a nightmare when we tried to claim damage on our show 56 chevy with
our regular insurance met P&C.
The stated value at the time was $20K which is still very low but they had
full intentions of totalling out our show vehicle because of about $2K
worth of damage! (*They didnt realize I had stated value coverage at the
time)
The guy who appraised it was NOT a show car appraiser or even had knowledge
of classic cars-
being a MA appraiser myself, he was so wrong on many of the items (ie
aftermarket chrome was an issue- I have perfect chrome and his suggestion
was to 'fix it' LOL)

Lisa,

You asked for advice on Classic Car insurance. The company I've had for
the
past 13 years on my '57 is J.C.Taylor, of Philadelphia. They offer
"Classic" insurance (for stock cars over 25 years old), as well as
"Modified" insurance (Street Rod - Customized/Modified - Replicar - Kit
Car - Exotic Vehicle). They have definitions of these types on their
website at http://www.jctaylor.com/. They don't have a mileage limit, but
they do want you to keep it under a reasonable amount per year. As for
claims, I've only made one (when a chrome shop "lost" some items). They
came through VERY promptly and with no hassles at all. I was amazed!
Their
premiums are good, too. For an "agreed value" policy ($35,000 in my case)
I
pay $130/year. And, that includes Liability! Can't beat it!

Good luck!
