I commented on the insurance issue on the last posting, but I believe that
it is appropriate to make an additional comment. I have Hagerty Insurance
(1-800-922-4050) and am VERY please with them. I have full coverage
including liability - agreed upon value and no mileage limits (cannot use
it
as everyday driver is only real restriction).
I strongly suggest that you use one of the many companies that specialize
in
the old car industry that have been identified in Bob's list and stay away
from the standard companies. I believe that in the unlikely event that you
need to use the service, you will be much more satisfied. This is just my
thoughts on the subject.
By the way, Bob, how do you fair with you stolen vehicle?

Hey Bob,

I just wanted to put in a word for "Ralph Roberts Classic Supply". I
am
sitting in my dining room with a box of parts I received from Ralph
yesterday. The prices were the best I could find, he didn't try to make up
for deals in the shipping cost either. I called their number to get exact
shipping costs for a Money Order, he gives a 10% discount for cash, and
Spoke
to Ralph himself. He says he is a 1 man operation. A classic Chevyman
making a living off them. How nice. His catalog is online at
www.56chevy.com. If you need parts you must check him out first.
I am very pleased with Ralph and will order from him again.
Thanks for the great list Bob

List members,
I really enjoyed (and saved) Warren's post on
"Grandpa and the Generation Gap." And thanks, Wyatt,
for your perspective. Good points, and eloquently
stated (this appreciation comes from a guy TWICE your
age). Bob, I for one enjoy the trivia for the same
reason I enjoy driving (not showing) my classics.
Sitting behind that hood-bird takes me back to a whole
lot of fond memories. I think you have a great sense
of balance where this list is concerned, so please
don't change on my account.
Bob, this question is for you. Since my family
left Southern California when I was 15 (and my
financial situation was somewhat inferior to the
present) is there a site where others can look to find
out if funds are due them in their respective states?
Thanks again, -Delivery Dale

Editor's note. Every state has an unclaimed property section. Try your
search engine with the key words UNCLAIMED PROPERTY XXXXX where
XXXX is your state name.
I also suggest you call your state tax department and ask them. What state
do you live in. I may be able to look up the address for you?

speaking of drive in movies, i have a trivia question for those interested
where was the first drive in movie located

hint!!! not on the west coast

Editor's note. You really sprayed the WD40 on my old brain. I worked at a
drive in theatre in the 50s.
I think I recall reading that the first drive in was in the unlikely place
of Candem New Jersey.
However, I could be totally off base.

To Mike D. Mike, here in Idaho, I'm not sure about NEW cars. I think
they
are around 50 or 60 bucks, but my 56 is fully restored & we pay the minimum

of 28.00 a year. Idaho does have cheap plates compare to many states. Our
neighboring Montana & Washington states are not so Lucky :-(:-( :-( but
I
think Wash. also pays a minimum fee for classic cars. Boy, it sounds like
R.
I. is really a tax hungry state!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If it were Calif., I
wouldn't be surprised, but Rhode Island??? That's a surprise! I think
classic car owners should get together & protest this! If a guy drives an
old beater 56 like I did for 13 years or so, why should they have to pay
what
some stupid book say that car is worth. A classic car is really only worth
what you can get for it.!!!!!!!! And that 56 I had would SURELY never
bring
the price of a restored one!!!!!!! Your state DMV laws are VERY UNFAIR

In response to Bob Case re radial tires ... I purchased five for my '55
BelAir directly from Classic Chev Intl (CCI). They are manufactured by
Coker and supposedly are identical to those ordered directly from
manufacturer. Believe I ordered from CCI to avoid sales tax. They are P205
x 15 Radial WideWhite Walls. Ride definitely is superior to the original
bias tires and they are apparently of high quality.

Warning - for a different Chev I tried to save a few dollars and ordered
from another company (located in Las Vegas). White walls have gradually
darkened along the edges and now look lousy. I called the company to get
an
adjustment. Surprise ... they are no longer in business. Be careful!

This is for Loal W. Phipps: I have an old KMC unit that is missing the

antenna input jack and an antenna output line. Front panel is about 1 1/2"

4 1/4" and it is 5 1/2" deep. Two knobs on the front, one for the slide

Regarding the "good old days", it is easy to reflect back and think things
were better then but they weren't, really.

I don't remember a lot about the 50's but I remember the 60's real well.
Girls and women, in particular, have it a lot better now than they did
then.
In my high school, girls were not allowed to participate in most sports.
If
a girl wanted to earn a high school letter, she had to do so through civic
voluteer work. Not easy. No support. No buses or coaches. Only certain
types of volunteer work was OK. Most girls got their letters by dating a
"jock." Girls could not take auto shop or other shop classes. We were
discouraged from classes that would have prepared us for jobs with
meaningful
wages.

My mother could only get certain types of low-pay jobs. Most types of
employment were closed to her. We got by on $300 a month, unless she could

get evening or weekend employment as well.

I paid my way through college by working in a cannery. I was a sorter
which
is very low-skill. My classmate was hired to operate a forklift and made
twice what I made. This job was closed to females. Skills, experience,
physical ability, and education did not matter, only gender.

A generation before that, women didn't even drive cars. It wasn't ladylike

and women weren't bright enough to learn anyway. Does anyone remember the
old camera commercials (Kodak, I think) that stated something to this
effect,
"Complex enough for him; simple enough for her"?

Does anyone remember polio and iron lungs? Deaths from infections?
"Whites
only" signs? Girls who were "sent away" in their teens and never spoken to

again when they returned?

I love nostalgia, but I would not go back to the "good old days." These
days
are better.

Jan Mowrey

Editor's note. This is just my opinion. Other may disagree. Jan makes
some good points about the
old days. There were some good things and some very bad things. I think we
have made some progress correcting some of the bad things. My sons have
never heard of an iron lung. I remember them vividly. Deaths from TB are
unheard of now. There were at one time very common. In the 50s women
doctors and lawyers were very rare. Not any more.

Hello Bob:

As usual, I'd like to thank you for your continuing efforts relating to
this
fine list. I find it to be both entertaining as well as informative.
Unfortunately, I missed-out on what in my mind must have been the pinnacle
of hot-rodding/cruising; the 50's and 60's. As a result, I especially
enjoy
talking to anyone who was there and lived the experiences, as well as any
drag-racing and performance related tales. Consequently; I enjoy the
trivia
and viewpoints of yesteryear.

I do have a question for the masses; I am looking to purchase a new set of
headers for my 55 Nomad. It currently has a 358" small-block TH350 combo,
and I would like to relocate the engine forward 3/4" so that I can fit my
HEI without "massaging" my firewall (not an option). Moving the engine
forward will necessitate new headers due to suspension clearance problems
with the existing unknown brand of headers that currently reside in my car.
I have seen new headers from a few vendors that have high-temp coatings for
under $300. That is a really great price, but the collector on these units
are only 2 3/4". I am looking for a decent performance header with a 3"
collector that won't break-the-bank. A good friend of mine bought a
fantastic custom set for his blown big-block 56 post, and spent over $800.
They are really nice, but I am happily married and intend to stay that
way... Any thoughts on good engine mounts and headers would be greatly
appreciated. I have this thing with spending my $$ only once.

Thanks,

Erik Andersson

Charlie,

The Azusa Drive-in and most of the land around it has been purchased by
Azusa Pacific College. I believe the McDonalds your talking about is gone
too, but I will have to look the next time I'm in Azusa. That McDonalds
was the first one I ever went to. I think it was in the early 50's and I
still remember the sign saying "over 5,000 sold" and they were $.25.
Too bad your not going to be in the area for the Drive-in Cruise, movie
and dance on June 2nd. It will be its last night open and we are planning
on making it a special night with a special '50's car type movie. Hay,
list members got any suggestions. We want to show a movie that goes along
with cars and the '50's, but I don't know which one would be the best.

Recently on the list, a member asked about radial tires for their Classic.
Do radials make a difference in driving? You bet they do! In fact, one of
our friends commented he could not believe what a huge difference they made
in the drive of his '55. Where to get those nice, wide whitewalls? Coker
Tire in Chattanooga, TN is the place we recommend. They will be at
Carlisle in a couple weeks, so if you call and place an order with them
now, they can bring them to Carlisle and you can save on shipping. We just
got a flier in the mail from them - they have Firestone 670-15 whitewall
BLEMS on sale for $73 each. Blems have cosmetic defects only and still
have the same quarantee as a first run tire. Their phone # is:
800-251-6336. Their website is: www.coker.com.

Hi Bob & All Tri-5ers,
Jim & Linda Riggs, (Heart Of Md Classic Chevy Club), and I were
checking an ad for a '56 BelAir 2 door sedan and the owner said the car had
a "4 speed 'Vette rock crusher trans." The car also has the rare dual quads
and dual exhaust. Here's the rub. He claims the car is a "numbers matching"
car! Was a four speed offered at all by Chevrolet in '56? Maybe in the
Corvettes? Would it have been possible to special order the car with a four
speed? Could it have been a dealer option? If this is truly as he claims it
to be, I'm sure it would be extremely rare. Anybody on the list have any
information about the 4 speed?
According to the ad the engine was professionally rebuilt to run on
unleaded gas and is in excellent condition in and out, garage kept. He's
asking $35,000 and can be reached at Jevy56@aol.com Thanks for any
information. Wild Bill

Bob,

I was given your email address from Bill Brown. I was wondering if you
could
post on your 57-56-55 CHEVY LIST the following question:

I recently purchased a 1957 210, 2 Door Sedan and would love to find out
where this car has been in its lifetime. I was told there is an
organization
or website where I can purchase or receive a history on my car. However, I

am not having any luck locating such a place. Through books and the vin
number I have determined that the car was built in California, but this
seems
to be all I can currently determine. If anyone has any ideas on how to
research the history of my car, please email me at dstpolo@aol.com.

Thanks,
Sam

Editor's note. I tried to find the previous owners of my 57 without any
luck. I doubt it there
is any complete history of cars but if there is, a lot of us would like to
know about it.

To Loal W. Phipps re: adding an FM tuner to your stock tube radio.
Two years ago I had a FM tuner put inside my '56 stock radio by John's Auto

Radio, 2502 S. Barrington, Los Angelos, CA 90064 (310 473-6921). After
instillation, when the radio is turned on it is an AM radio. Turn it off

6 sec. and tnen back on and it is now a FM radio. Set the push buttons on
your favorite FM station, as the face plate is the original AM only.

My dad is on your list. I am in high school and I get home from school

Mom and dad really enjoy answering these questions. It really makes our

We had a discussion at school about the 50s and someone said there was a 5
hour PBS special about the 50s many years ago. I would love to have a copy
of that special but I can not find it. I and many of my class mates have
been looking for it for 6 months and no luck. Do you know if it existed and
if so how can I find a copy. Whatever it cost, I think we could come up
with the money to buy it if a copy can be found.

Then take the money you would have paid for it and take your parents out
