Re: unclaimed property,
A national database is located at:
http://www.nupd.com/
This site also has links to all state sites. In reply to the question
about
winter beaters in the salt belt, with the economy booming up 'till recently
in
the NE,people have been by and large buying cars to drive all 4 seasons and
then just buying another when they get rusty. It'll make you ill to see some
pretty nice new vehicles encrusted with salt grime.

I keep my '74 'vette off the road(originally from Ca.,never seen salt) from
Oct-May. I've been looking for a '56 hardtop locally and have found nothing
out
here but grossly overpriced "restorations" or rolling bondo buckets
sporting
new paint. Why did I ever sell my 56 210 sport coupe body for $250 18 years
ago???? It's probably still being driven around in Encinitas Ca.
today!(blue+white,4 speed w/beefed up rear springs).
Great newsletter, enjoy them just like you are doing them.
Bruce Toker in New Hampshire(6 inches of snow yesterday, followed by 2 more
inches of salt!)

Editor's note. I urge all U.S. members to go to the web site listed above
and check if they
have any unclaimed property. I works for all states. I have found a total
of about $6000 for my friends. Do a search for your self and everyone you
know. It is a great feeling to be able to call someone and tell them you
found some money for them. Please post on this list if you found some
money for your self or someone you know.

checking an ad for a '56 BelAir 2 door sedan and the owner said the car had
a "4 speed 'Vette rock crusher trans."

There was no 4-speed transmission in 56 for any of the Chevrolet cars. The

first 4-speed was publicly introduced in 57 for the Corvette and some
dealers installed them in passenger cars as an option. Many of the 57
Corvettes came with 3-speeds.

WHY YOU SPELLED CAMDEN WRONG, YOU ARE RIGHT. I KNOW THIS BECAUSE IT IS MY

UNLIKELY PLACE (HA HA ) CAMDEN HAS FALLEN APART BUT IT ONCE HAD ITS HAY
DAY EQUAL TO THE BIG CITIES

GOOD CALL ON THE ANSWER
ROB CREAN

Editor's note. Sorry Rob for the wording of my note. I didn't mean to
imply that Camden was a bad place. I didn't say HA HA. I should have said
I would have expected the first drive in to be in a large population area
like New York or in Los Angeles where everyone has a car. It was unlikely
that the first drive in would be in a smaller town but it was.

Hey Bob. Your right. The first Drive-In Movie screen was set up on Baird
Blvd in Camden,New Jersey in 1931. Sadly there are none left in NJ. There
was even a Drive-In close to Allentown, Pa. that you Fly a small airplane
in and take in a movie.

I would like to elaborate a little on what Joel Willman and others have
had to say about Ralph Roberts. I, too, have purchased parts from Ralph
and have been extremely pleased with him. For those of you who live in
Washington state like I do, the Portland (OR) swap meet offers you a
once a year opportunity. Last year, I bought floor pan halves, rocker
panels, and other large sheet metal parts from Ralph at the Portland
swap meet. Not only 10% off for cash, but I saved the 8% Wash sales
tax, too. I then picked up the parts at Ralph's place in Vancouver on
my home to Bremerton (near Seattle) and paid no shipping. Ralph said I
saved about $500 in shipping for all those large pieces (people on I-5
were probably wondering what that was on the top of my minivan)! The
date of the Portland swap is fast approaching.

Hay Bob,
You're do'in a great job, thanx! I checked out the Hagerty Insurance site
recommended in a past newsletter and they do look good. But I only own
classics and drive them daily, with Hagerty ya gotta own a non-classic
driver for your every day use. Anybody out there know of a good insurance
company for us everyday users? I now have a ACV (actual cash value) policy
with USAA but my replacement award is a little grey. Does anyone have
solid knowledge as to the pro's and con's of this type of coverage?
Thanks again,
Paul

Editor's note. Paul there should not be anything wrong with Actual Cash
Value insurance IF you have some way to prove the actual cash value. If
you get ACV insurance, I suggest you get an appraisal and give a copy to
the insurance company. You both need to agree on the value of your car.
Most non classic insurance companies just look in a book to find the value
of your car. For them, the value of a car goes down every year. They
think a 57 has a value of about $100 according to their book.

Bob, someone asked you about how to find Unclaimed Property.
Here is an article from the Kim Momando newsletter today.

************************************************** ************
KIM'S KOMPUTER KOLUMN:
Lost treasure, found on the Internet

It's been reported that one out of eight persons in the United
States are owed unclaimed money that in total, is around a
whopping $20 billion. This means that right now, hiding within
some Web page, there could be news about unclaimed property
due to you, your relatives or business. All you have to do is
go claim it. Talk about an easy buck!

Unclaimed property is the blanket term give to abandoned
assets, money or otherwise. Perhaps you changed banks and
forgot to close your savings or checking account. Or it could
be that when you changed employers, you neglected to transfer
or recover pension or 401k plan funds. The last time you
moved, did you remember to request any utility refunds or
security deposits?

Unclaimed property also includes goods abandoned in safe-
deposit boxes, undeliverable stock or mutual fund dividend
checks, life insurance proceeds and property left when the
deceased did not have a will.

Usually, unclaimed property is turned over to the State or
Federal government by financial institutions, until the
rightful recipient recovers them or until the property is sold
at auction.

Here's where the Internet can help. You can research and track
down what is rightfully yours by tapping into the Internet's
resources. If you do strike gold, you'll find the necessary
forms and steps to take to recover the property at the sites, too.

Begin your search at the National Association of Unclaimed
Property Administrators (www.unclaimed.org). Unless you're
already familiar with unclaimed property, time is well spent
reading NAUPA's excellent primer on unclaimed property.

In the NAUPA "Find Property" section, there are links to state
agencies that manage unclaimed property. Search those states
where you or a family member has lived.

If the state you need does not offer the ability to search
unclaimed property records online, you are provided the
state's contact information. In that event, you'll have to
find your unclaimed property the old-fashioned way, regular
U.S. mail.

Head to MissingMoney.com (www.missingmoney.com), a
wholly owned subsidiary of CheckFree, an Internet billing
company next. The site claims they have helped consumers
retrieve over 360,000 lost properties worth an estimated $90
million. Here you can do an individual, family or business
search, and all for free. If you do see your name on the list,
links are provided to the forms necessary to make the claim.

After searching these sites, go to the Pension Benefit
Guaranty Corporation's site (search.pbgc.gov). Here, you can
search the database of names of people who have worked long
enough to earn a pension benefit, but could no longer be
located by their companies. You can search by name, company
worked for or by state where the company is headquartered.

Another way that property can go unclaimed is when a credit
union with federal insurance is liquidated. The National
Credit Union Administration's Asset Liquidation Management
Center (www.ncua.gov/all_docs/news/unclaimed/unclaimed.html)
is responsible for paying the share accounts to members, and
offers online searching by name, city, state and name of the
credit union.

If you've ever had a HUD/FHA insured mortgage, you might be
eligible for a refund on an insurance premium or a share of
the earnings. At the HUD site (www.hud.gov/refunds/index.cfm),
enter a name or case number to find out whether you're owed
any funds.

The big question is if you find unclaimed riches, how long
until you get the check? Figure several weeks to several
months, depending on where the property is. Experts say it's a
good idea to check a few times a year because of the routine
updating of information. Quite simply, you might not be in the
database now, but you could be a few months down the road.
The hope of unclaimed funds is inviting. Although you may
come up empty-handed after your search, it's certainly
worth a try.

Kim,
Sure wish I could be there for the "Last Picture
Show." I'm afraid my vote for which movie to show,
hands down, would be "American Graffiti." Just like
M*A*S*H, 'tho set in the Korean War, was really about
Vietnam, I feel that "A.G.," 'tho set in '62, really
sums up the '50's. Just my opinion.
Did you know that if you fill up your Yugo's gas
tank, you have just doubled it's value?
Take care all, -Delivery Dale

Editor's note. Anyone ever see the follow on movie to American Graffiti.
It was called
More American Graffiti. Most of the same cast except they are a few years
older.

<< We had a discussion at school about the 50s and someone said there was a
5
hour PBS special about the 50s many years ago. I would love to have a
copy

if so how can I find a copy. Whatever it cost, I think we could come up

Bob,
First, I'd like to ad my name to the list of satisfied customers of Ralph
Roberts. I just started buying parts from him a few months ago. His prices
are great and his service is even greater. I would recommend him to
everyone.
To Jan, you definitely pointed out the downside of the 'old days'. It's
too
bad we couldn't combine the good things about the 50's & 60's with the good

thing of today, and do away with all the bad things. What a wonderful world

this would be.

And to Kim, my friends and I used to hide people in the trunk all the
time.
One friend of mine had a 67' Buick Electra, which we used to fit 4 or 5
people in the trunk at a time. What a savings that was! I remember one time

we left these two guys in the trunk through half the movie.(LOL) The
funniest
part about it was one of the guys owned the car we were in. He wanted to go

in the trunk, so we put him in the trunk (LOL). Man, was he 'upset' when we

let them out!!

Here is a bit of fun nostalgia from the 50's. Cliff was raised in the
San
Diego area and told me many times about the local teen hangout, Oscar's
Drive-in, where anybody who was cool went for their burgers and soft
drinks.
It was especially important as a place to show off your car. Well last
year,
Cliff and I went to Balboa Park and toured the antique car exhibit, and, to

our surprise, there was Oscar's Drive-in, on display inside the building
along with the cars! Jan Mowrey

Editor's note. I greatly enjoyed a visit to that exhibit a few years ago.

To answer Bob Fowler's question "I'd rather fight than switch." That was
for Tareyton, filter cigarettes.... They were made by American Tobacco
Company... Actors sported a blackeye as they held up a package of
Tareyton, cigarettes and said " I'd rather fight than switch." The
filter itself had a ring around it also.... The announcer would then say
"The Tareyton ring marks the real thing." So much for brand loyalty.....

I really do not want to good back in time. But there are some very good
things back then. Unfortunately, women were not treated in the job force
as
equals then; they have made significant progress, but I believe there still

has some progress that needs to be made.

I too remember cars going into drive-ins with "extras" in the trunks. Many

of them got caught because the cars would be "lowered" and the theaters
would have people inside to collect the extra admissions.

Bob, I believe you are correct about the first drive-in - New Jersey.

My vote is for you to keep the format the way you have it; you do a
superior
job and I enjoy the trivia as well as the pointed Q and A.

I just wanted to put in a word for "Ralph Roberts Classic Supply". I
am sitting in my dining room with a box of parts I received from Ralph

shipping costs for a Money Order, he gives a 10% discount for cash, and
