BOB
I owe you big time and I do mean big time. I never in my wildest dreams
thought a Chevy list
could bring me so much happyness. I read you list about the unclaimed
property. I knew I could not have any but I checked anyway. I was right.
I didn't have any unclaimed property. By accident, my wife was in the room
when I was checking and she asked me what I was doing. I told her what I
was doing and that I had checked and I didn't have any unclaimed property.
She told me to check for her with her maiden name. I did the check and she
hit the jackpot. She was an only child and her parents were divorced when
she was in high school. She had lived with her mother until she was an
adult and had never heard from her father again. Her father had died a
few years ago and he had named his daughter, my wife, as the beneficiary of
his IRA. It is a large amount of money that will enable our children to go
to college, something we could not afford otherwise. I can also pay off my
home loan. Owning a home free and clear will be a wonderful feeling.

My wife now thinks buying a 55 Chevy to fix up and then joining your list
was the best thing I have ever done in my life and I agree. You have our
eternal thanks.

You need to check your site, These prices are all wrong. You must have had
a
computer problem. Would you please correct it. Thanks, Dan

Editor's note. Dan, I don't have any cars for sale on my web site. If
you are talking
about the e-mail I send out of cars for sale, all of these cars for sale
are sent in by
list members.

Hi all- here's a few interesting items that I stumbled across
at the car show/ swapmeet in Charlotte NC last weekend.

58 chevy 2-door wagon
58 chevy sedan delivery
1-910-464-2511 Robbins NC

Now here's the catch- these cars weren't AT the show, in fact
the vendor didn't even have PICTURES. And the price was left
open-ended....

So BUYER BEWARE, but it might be worth the cost of phone call if
you like 58's.

Another interesting but kinda questionable item being sold was the TITLE
and cowl tag ONLY from a 57 2-door hardtop for $200.00....

I've never been so sure whether re-tagging cars with a "new" vin # was
exactly legal, so I'll with-hold the phone # on that one for now.

What say ye all? Is this practice kosher or no?

Bob; I have to say "thank you" for your efforts on the List. I enjoy
reading
it and look forward to receiving it.
Recently member wrote in asking for advice on insuring her new classic.
Specifically, she was looking for recommendations on some reliable
Companies
that wrote coverage for these cars. As usual, the next list had a number of
responses from some of the "regulars" ,each giving a recommendation for
their own carriers . Then the replies became complaints about Auto
insurance
in general and Classic car coverage in particular. "Delivery Dale" voices
his "gripe" about not being able to be covered for Liability in ANY car he
drives and doesn't understand why he has to have separate coverage's for
each car he owns.

It has gotten way off the point and I can't sit and ignore it any longer.
I
am not an expert on Rebuilt Water pumps, $150,000 57 Pro Street cars,
babies
in suitcases or Hood Hinges BUT I am in the INSURANCE business and own 2
classics in addition to my regular vehicles. So maybe, I can help here and
educate some folks on this very important topic.
First, for the lady who asked the original question I would ask, where are
you located? Each state has it's own laws regarding Auto Insurance and
Required coverage's and Rates VARY GREATLY from state to state and even
from
City to City within a given state. The best advice you can get is from
someone Local! If this is your first classic, ask the SELLER who they used.
Your own agent is another good source( we usually represent a number of
companies ).Also, contact a local club for advice, at the very least you'll
get an invitation to join!

Secondly, for Delivery Dale, I want to begin by saying that as a Consumer,
I
too, am fed up with high rates!! I live in NJ where we are reputed to have
the highest rates in the US but sometimes it helps to have an understanding
of what you are buying so you can better understand why it costs what it
does. Dale, for a fellow who insures "nearly a dozen vehicles between my
wife and myself" one would think that you would know how it works. Shame on
your agent for not explaining it or shame on you for not asking the right
questions!
An Auto Policy is actually a COMBINATION of several different types of
insurance, all under one contract. Depending on your state these policies
cover the following; 1) General Liability (2) Medical Payments (3)
Collision
(4) Comprehensive (5) Uninsured Motorist and(6) Misc. Endorsements and
Riders as available.
I certainly don't have space to go over the Whole contract so we will
discuss only #s 1,3,&4. Number 1 General Liability covers injuries/deaths
and property damage resulting from an accident. If you have more than one
car under the policy it doesn't make any difference which one you were
driving!! You are covered PER OCCURRENCE up to the limits you have chosen.(
hint- you better have the maximum available because you WILL be sued for
everything you have Not just the limit in your policy!)
The general rule is you should carry LIABILITY INS EQUAL to your NET WORTH
! This usually means Umbrella Coverage. In a nutshell Dale, the insurance
IS
covering YOU for Liability. 3&4 Comp/collision covers each individual Car
as
listed in the policy. It is pretty easy to understand that these coverage's
have to be unique to the different cars since no two are exactly alike and
you can choose the coverage's and limits for each individual car.
Finally, there are Hugh differences between Regular Auto (daily driver) and
Antique/Classic car insurance. They are NOT interchangeable and should not
be used incorrectly. The biggest difference is what is referred to as
"stated value" coverage. This is what you get in the Classic policy. The
Value of the car is agreed upon up front and "stated" in the policy! You
pay
by how much you insure your car for usually with a professional appraisal.
There are restrictions on mileage and use because these policies are
reserved for "show cars and other Special interest vehicles" . They are
usually insured for High amts. in return for not being driven often, that's
why its so cheap. Caution: If you have this coverage to save $$, don't have
any accidents at the local Piggly Wiggly picking up a pack of smokes
because
you will be sorely disappointed at claim time! The daily drivers should be
covered by Regular policies where the are no restrictions but you can park
them out in the elements, like my friend from Idaho, and not worry when the
Hail Storm comes, you'll be covered!!!!!!!!!! This is not Rocket Science
guys & gals just plain common sense.
Everyone should READ and UNDERSTAND your policies. If you need advice ask
your agent or the company customer service rep. they are there to help you
,
who knows you might even save a $ or two ! Sorry to be so long winded but I
did say I was an Insurance broker didn't I ? Charlie Schneider. 55 Conv. &

Re: the 57 hood hinge problem. The 55 & 56 hood hinges are totally
different
than the 57 and won't work. Also, the reproduction hood bar seems to be
the
biggest culprit- its too heavy. I had the same problem with a reproduction

hood bar so I took it off and put the original hood bar on and it stayed
up-
too bad the original was shot appearance wise.
Also just pressing the rivets won't always work. The holes which the rivet
goes through is sometimes wallowed out to egg shape and the rivet wont
hold.
To correct that problem, you have to take the hinge apart; weld up the hole

and re-drill it. So if the hinges are restored correctly, including CAD
plating, $150.00 is not too much.

$310 and FREE SHIPPING! These are real nice headers with the Hooker

stamped in each header. You can call PAW at (818)678-3000 or visit their

Hey Bob,
I enjoy your articles and lists very much. We lived in Modesto California
for twenty years, I belonged to the Central California Classic Chevy Club.

Since George Lucas was born and raised in Modesto, the city celebrated
Graffiti night in June every year. The entire week was filled with car
events around town. Saturday was several car shows in the area and a giant

cruise on McHenry Blvd on Saturday night. My club would gather at one of
the
local drive ins and sell T-shirts, we had a great time. Well, it got larger

every year. The police began opposing it, the gang bangers came over from
the Bay area and San Jose, shootings then took place, so the whole thing
was
shut down. Now, it is limited to a few car shows in the outlining areas
and
nothing in Modesto. We live in the middle of Washington now, no one has
heard of Modesto or George Lucas. Keep up the good work!!!

Bob,
You are doing such a rotten job with this list,
for which I don't feel I'm getting my money's worth,
that I felt moved to offer the following suggestions
to improve it:
1. Stop including trivia, particularly those horrid
"How many of these do you remember?" lists....I
already remember every one of them!
2. Stop listing every ad you receive for vehicles for
sale....you should only list cars that you have
personally inspected and ascertained their value from
extensive research. Don't tell me you don't have
time, think of those 20 minutes a day you are wasting
sleeping!
3. Stop trying to turn this list into a business for
your own personal profit. So what if the list is free
and you keep sending out video tapes that you lose a
couple of bucks on each one....you must be making it
up in volume!
4. Stop listing my postz "as is!" You kneed to edit
them and korrect my speling and punktuashun so that
everywon knows how smart I iz!

;) LET'S GET A GRIP!!! My eternal gratitude and
respect for a true labor of love, Bob. -Delivery Dale

Editor's note.
Grate suggest ton Dale. I were good at gramner in hi schol. In fac, I
finesh in the top 90 percent of my clas. I an also a grate spel checher and
I no a lot abot kars. I now loking for a Pinto gas tank 4 to
put in my Yugo. This wil improve there reer crash protection of the Yogo..

Theen I wel put some Firestone tire on it to make it mor stable. Anyone no
if a Edsel grille wil fit
on my Yugo, either front or reer. I gus I should have thought so thing
wong when I only got a 5
hower warranty when I bi it nu and the dealer's name was Maxweel Smart.

Hi to Richard at "."

Richard. Perhaps you're right about Bryce's Classic Chevys...(see note
below). That could explain why I never received the trunk weather
stripping
I ordered from him on the net sometime about last August. His site came up
on the search engine, I selected the weather stripping, it priced out and
asked for my Visa card number, which it took. I received an order
confirmation back on my eMail but the product never showed and my card was
never billed. I hope Bryce is okay...I knew him well while I lived in Las
Vegas and he was very instrumental in helping me with building my '56. I
suppose we could just do something old-fashioned and call him on the phone
and see 'tsup. Anybody else know anything about Bryce Robson???

PS: Richard...I actually found my dad's name on the "unclaimed property"
list on NAUPA's BOISE IDAHO website thanks all to BOB FORDs mentioning the
service they provide in this letter! I passed the web-page on to him via
e-mail and I'm excited to see if he gets some money...I also found me and
my
wife's names at NAUPA under Utah's unclaimed money list and applied to
Utah's Treasury Office see what that holds for us. Everything I needed to
request the forms was on the web. If you want to contact me I'm at

bill is 100 pct, right. i know - i bought a 57 sight unseen and had to do

if you see a car for sale far away from you try to find an appraiser in
that area. look in hemmings or call the national appraisal association
to get one close to where the car is. some appraisers will check out older
cars for you and give all the info.

When I was a kid my folks drove a brown and white 55 Chevy 2dr sedan. I
remember the car having something on it I have not seen on any of the other
five 55 sedans I have owned as an adult. On the inside of the "posts"
separating the front and back window were cloth strap (or loops) about and
inch and a half wide. They were obviously to help you get out of the back
seat. My dad was not into spending unnecessary money on accessories or much
else for that matter (i.e. tires were not worn out until ALL of the cord
was worn through), so I know these had to be a factory installed item.
Maybe they had all been removed from the other sedans I have owned. What
were they called? And also, does anyone reproduce them? In all the
tri-five countless catalogs I've seem, I've never even seen them mentioned?

As always, Thanks for the great list Bob.
Thanks to all who helped me find my obscure trim piece to finish out my 56
side trim.

My next body work involves the rear trunk area.

The previous owner/s had welded a heavy trailer hitch onto the bumper and
then cut off the rear portion of the body to get everything off.
They removed the Last 10" of the trunk floor, the brace and splash pan etc.
This is how I got the car.

Does anyone have any digital picture(s) of the trunk latch/splashpan area
as
well as an underneath shot so I can get a feel for what repro panels I am
going to have to get or weather or not I am going to have to find a junker
(I know, blasphemy) in a pick and pull.
