As I disassemble my '56, I notice that the shift linkage arm that is welded

to the frame is not horizontal. Should it be straight or bent down about 15

degrees as it is now? Thanks, David Browe

In response to anthony Babiaks question on starters for small block, I will
offer my experience with these starter issues. I certainly don't claim to
know years for the changes in starter configurations but here goes.
The original 265 and real early 283 engines used starters that mounted to a
plate mounted to the back of the engine block and these engines where not
drilled for the standard vertical bolt mounting holes that all later blocks
have. You can determine whether you need an adapter by simply inspecting
the bottom rear passenger end of the block to see if the vertical starter
bolt holes are drilled. I believe the non drilled blocks
were only used from 1955 to 1957 and all later blocks were drilled for
vertical bolt starters.
Flex plates have been available in either 153 tooth or 168 tooth as far
back as we have worked on these small block V-8 engines but I'm not certain
when General Motors started making them with both sizes. The starter nose
casting is what positions the starter closer or further from the engine
block. We have used 153 (12 3/4" diameter) and 168 (14 1/16" diameter)
tooth flex plates interchangeably on all years as long as they
had the proper balance weighting and crankshaft end holes patterns. All
early (pre 1970s) small blocks were internally balanced and used non
weighted flex plates. If Mr. Babiaks engine has the holes drilled (which it
would if it's truly a 59 engine) the easiest way to solve the problem is to
use one of the late after market gear drive starters. These starters have
both bolt patterns on the mounting snout so they can be used with
either size flex plate. The other options is to find a parts person at your
local parts store, that knows the difference in starter castings and buy
the correct starter to match your flex plate. For those that wish to use
the original starter you can use a plate kit that provides a place to mount
it. I have used the kit from Danchuck and it works fine.
Hope this is helpful.

Regarding question about later model transmissions in 55 Chevy, Classic
Chevy
has a kit that will mount the starter on the transmission rather than on
the
block. I used one to install a 700-R4 behind a 265 in my 56 Nomad. Check
it
out.

Hi Jeff,Bob and Fellow TriFivers
Jeff you should contact Dean Oshiro at 1-888-875-6666 Hot Rods USA
http://www.hotrodsusa.com/ They sell their own products and also many after

market items and manufacturers. He was willing to deal price wise too when
I
ordered my Wilwood front disc brake conversion kit for my '56 chevy. He has

written an article on Brake components for street cars and rods.

Give him a try and read his article on brakes. I have the Wilwood Heavy

This is in response to the question on starter adapters and rear disc brake

kits. CCI in Orlando has starter adapters as do others I'm sure. Super
Chevy
magazine lists many venders for about anything you could want. In there are

rear disc kits for less than was quoted.

Hi Bob,
thought I might throw in some equipment I would like to sell.
1 each 891 distributor very good condition. $100.00
1 each 57 stick shift column and linkage to 3 speed. Needs resto. $275.00
1 each set of 57 B/A interior stainless door trim. Very good. $125.00
1 each set of new 58-64 2" lowered spindles, disc brakes, calipers, brake
hoses, rotors, a complete kit. Brand new, never used. $550.00
numerous 57, 58-62 parts. cheap.

A note to the fellow looking for a rear disc brake set up, try Bow Tie
chevys,
Orlando, there prices are much better than CCCI. We visited CCCI in
florida,
they would not give us the time of day, even though I have been a member
for
19 years and we had traveled from Washington State. They would not tell us

where Bow Tie Chevys was located. We found Bow Tie Chevys (Denny Williams)

down the freeway a couple of miles from CCCI. Robert Snowden greeted us
like
brothers. We got the whole tour, was there for over two hours. They were
great. So I try and send as much business to them as possible! . CCCI
is
in it for the bucks. My two cents.

Chris, if you will send me your e-mail address, I will send you a photo of
the pair of assist straps that are for my 55. This will give you an idea of
what your looking for at swap meets or for an upholstery shop to go by. One
thing they won't have at the upholstery shop is the chrome cap that goes at
the top where the attaching screws go through.

Hi Bob,
Can someone explain the difference between a 1957 two door sedan 210 series
and a 1957 Delray coupe. Pictures of the two appear identical but GM
figures
show
~22,000 Delray's were produced and ~ 166,000 two door sedan 210 series
were produced.

Hi everyone, Roger here in central Iowa. I have a question for anyone. I
have a couple of 605 units and my question is, the length of the original
box appears to be a lot longer than the 605, I am talking about where the
pitman arm goes. Is the bracket that you buy takes care of this or do you
have to use something from the original box? I have the tech data on this ,
but it says nothing about using any thing from the old box. One more
question, the pitman arm from the 605 mounts backwards as to compared to
the 57 box. Will the splines allow me to use my pitman arm and install it
the correct way? Any info will be appreciated. I really enjoy reading about
everyone that has some problems. I always email them if I can help out.
About pricing on the tri fives, I know a person would like to pickup a good
deal on one , including me,but the good deals sometimes are hard to find. I
keep a build sheet on my 57, and I know now I will have way over $30,000 in
mine and Im doing all the labor like teardown and putting back together.
Since I retired, I really enjoy doing this. When I was working, my nights
and weekends was always tied up working on my other restos. Well, every one
have a good spring and stay healthy. Roger

For CJ WILSON...............

Rear disc brake inquiry..... If you want to assemble a kit of your own,,
the rotors are from a 92 chev astro van {all wheel drive } , use the
calipers from a 77 full size chevrolet, and order the caliper brackets from
speedway motors.. You will have to weld these brackets to your rear end, I
have not checked to see if they have the clamp on brackets available.. If
they do,, I still would add a spot weld in a couple of places,, once you
get the calipers located..

We just did one of these on a ford rear in a chevy.. and the cost was a
LOT cheaper than some of the other kits... Rotors at a parts store should
be 50.00 or less each, calipers are around 25.00 each, and the brackets
20.00 each.... or very close to these prices.. Sometimes, it is just
knowing the parts to use that makes it cheaper to do.. Someone else has
done the homework and wants to get paid for their time....... I cant blame
them for that.........but that is what BOB,, does this list for,, so we can
all enjoy our cars, and with the price of gas going up,, every little bit
we save on parts,, gives us that much more for crusing........... GOOD
luck...................

what you put on the list, there are 100 of us who think you are doing a
great job and fully support you.

Joe sounds like the guy who was complaining that it hurt when he hit
