Dear fellow enthusiasts-

Our Club just received in the Club's snail mail an amazing letter. Perhaps
you can help this young lady in her desperate request. We think it's a
fantastic story and would love to help, but the combination of the distance
(100+ miles each way) and timing (day before the big yearly Valley Car Show
in Chatsworth) is really unfortunate. We are hoping that the FOREVER
CLASSIC CHEVY CLUB in Upland, or a '57 Chevy owner nearby, can help.

Here is the letter:

Dear L.A. Classic Chevy Club
My name is Jeannette Rincon, and all my life I have heard my mother talk
about the "Good Old Days" when she was a teenager growing up in the 50's,
and how when she was a teenager she used to cruise around in a '57 Chevy
BelAir and all the fun she had.

When I was about 10 years old my Mom was finally able to buy a '57 Chevy
and was so happy. I can still remember it as if it was yesterday, she would
take us cruising and tell us stories of what her friends would do and where
they would hang out, while listening to oldies like "Kansas City" and "Let
the good times roll"! But my Mom was a single Mom raising four girls and
money was tight so she was forced to sell her car. I could just imagine,
now as an adult, how that must have made her feel.

Last month my sister called me and said that my Mom was not looking good,
she said that my Mother had such severe swelling in her face, that she was
hardly recognizable, so we rushed her to the Emergency Room. Because she
doesn't have medical insurance we had to endure 18 hours in the E.R. before
we finally got a diagnosis. We found that my Mom had lung cancer and that
it was in the critical stages and the doctors were not very optimistic
about her recovery. Since then she has undergone 20 sessions of radiation
and is feeling very depressed.

My Mom (Sheila) will be 56 years old in June, and me and my sisters want to
give her a surprise party and invite all her old friends from the past. We
have done everything to make it look as authentic as possible, down to the
45 records we are going to play.

But the main thing I know that will make her day a memorable one is if she
could be picked up in a '57 Chevy again! I looked everywhere in the yellow
pages and on the Net, and found your car club. So the favor I would like to
ask of your car club is if you would be willing to pickup my Mom at her
house, playing all the oldies she remembers, and take her cruising for
about an hour, then drop her off at the Surprise Party. I would appreciate
it if you could make this a night she wouldn't forget. She is all that we
have and I want her to know how much we love her. I would be willing to
pay.

The party will be held at 2503 Pleasant Colony in Perris CA 91275 and it is
going to be on Saturday May 5, 2001. We chose to have the party one month
before her actual birthday because she is going to have chemotherapy in the
middle of May and we don't want her to be sick and to have fun at her own
party. If you cannot get a '57 Chevy, a '55 or '56 would be just as much of
a blessing.

Could you please call me at 323-257-4998 or write me at 5139 Irvington
Place, Los Angeles, CA 90042, to let me know you have received my request
and your response either way.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read my letter. Sincerely,
Jeannette Rincon
-------------------------------------
Just to let you know, I called her this morning (Sunday), and discussed the
situation with her. She knows that the distant location is the prime
problem. If it were here locally, we'd do it in a heartbeat. Sadly, she
doesn't have e-mail. Are there any '57 Chevy owners in the Riverside, San
Bernadino, Temecula, Winchester, Valley Center, Upland areas that can help?
Please pass this message on to anyone who might know someone in that area.
This would make a great Club function, one that several members could
participate in. And it would be a wonderful act of charity, one that would
be deeply appreciated by Jeannette's Mom and her family.

Thanks everyone. Sincerely, Jerry Mull LACCC president

I am looking for any information about the 1955 commemorative edition gold
painted 4 door Belair sedan. I understand that Chevrolet may have produced
5000 of these cars, and
that they were painted with a special gold paint. I have a car that I
believe may be one of these
gold cars. My car has many of the features of the original cars, and has
the
paint # 689 designated on the cowl tag (although it has been painted
Anniversary Gold (1962 color) and white. I would appreciate any information
regarding value, restoration potential, or other facts about these cars.
Individuals who have information can contact me at jnoyes@riversidecc.org.
I
am living in Massachusetts, and would be
interested to talk with people in this area by phone ( if possible) at

any and all assistance

This is in response to Matt regarding the difference between a '57
Delray and the standard 210 2-door sedan; the difference is that the
Delray model was upgraded to a vinyl pattern upholstery (this was
apparently easier to keep clean than cloth) and the door panels featured
a different design using gracefully sweeping stainless steel trim rather
than the standard trim which used sharper right angles. This may seem
like a minor difference, but I've learned to love my Delray even more
for this subtle change. I believe the Delray style upholstery and door
panels are finally being reproduced- now if we can just get the 210
armrests reproduced!

Hi Bob,
Thanks again for the great info.
I am currently looking for a set of four original 57 chevy 14" rims with
the
nubs on them so I can mount the original hub caps and spinners. Is there
anyone that has a set for sale or do you know of anyone that makes
reproduction rims that will work on the hub caps?

I have heard of a place called The Wheelsmith in santa ana california but
can't find the number in the phone book and when I called information, the
number they gave me is a answering service. Any Help would be greatly
appreciated.

<< Can someone explain the difference between a 1957 two door sedan 210
series
and a 1957 Delray coupe. Pictures of the two appear identical but GM
figures show
~22,000 Delray's were produced and ~ 166,000 two door sedan 210 series
were produced.

Matt,
I believe the only difference between a 210 and a Delray was the interior
pattern.

On the list from the 18th, RJ states that he has cured week hood hinges
just by sandblasting. I am curious. What type of lubricant were you
blasting?
Also how did you get the sand to reach the shank of the rivet on an
assembled
hinge?

I recently found these tech tips that I downloaded some time back. These
are
Tech Tips by Bill. (Sorry, I don't remember the web site address) These
are
some of the things people have asked for in the past.

"Take a set of spindles from a 68-72 Chevelle, Monte Carlo, or Grand Prix.

Swap sides and bolt to the stock A-armms of the 55-57 Chevy and you have
easy
disc brakes."

"Find a 75 Nova and borrow it's power brake booster as it will bolt right
in
to your Shoe Box without modification. "

"A saginaw steering box from a 75 International Harvester truck will bolt
right up to your 55-57 Chevy and can be had for a fraction of the normal
proce."

"A Chevelle 12-bolt rear end can be adapted to fit Tr-fives by welding on
Moroso spring plates."

"You can also use a Chevelle trans cross member on a Tri-5 by trimming the
ends to fit the frame rails. Then flatten the ends and drill new mounting
holes."

There is also a fairly long tech tip on finding a battery drain. If anyone

is interested, repsond to the list and I'll take the time to type it up and

post it.

Ref the difference between the Delray and a 210

The Delray was labeled a club coupe and the height was 59.9 inches
compared to the 210 hardtop that was 58.5 inches. The posts all came in
at the same height. The interior of the Delray was an vinyl. I see it
as GM's move to fancy up a post 2 door and give it a sportier look.

Thanks a lot for the tapes "THE LOOK AND FEEL OF THE 50S". They are great.
How in the world did you ever get these old videos from the Chevy factory?
I don't think they had video tape in 1955 did they?

I am a female senior in high school. I took these tapes to school and
watched them with fellow classmates after school. I was the only girl
watching the tapes with a whole bunch of guys. Was I ever popular.
Because of you sending me these tapes, I have got a bunch of date with cute
guys.

What do I owe you for the tapes?

Nancy

Editor's note. Nancy, I am glad you enjoyed the tapes. It is great to
have young people on the list. You have listed a benefit of the tapes that
I had not considered. Just consider the tapes as part of your membership
dues. <G>.

In regard to Roger's question on 605 steering boxes, the pitman shaft and
the
mounting portion of the old box must be modified to allow the 605 box to
work. The two end teeth must be removed from the original pitman shaft and
the bottom of the housing with the mounting holes must be removed from the
old box. These parts are then installed in the 605 box. The bracket you
heard
about keeps the 605 box from rotating relative to the mounting portion of
the
old box. Questions, rolasan@aol.com.

RANDY, I'VE HAD A B&M 174 BLOWER ON MY SMALL BLOCK FOR YEARS. IT IS IN A
'57 CHEVY AND I HAVE TO USE THE B&M AIR CLEANER THAT HAS THE TWO ELEMENTS
ON
THE SIDES. THIS IS THE LOWEST PROFILE AIR CLEANER I COULD FIND. EVEN AT
THAT THERE ARE MARKINGS ON THE TOP OF THE AIR CLEANER ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE
WHICH INDICATES THE ENGINE IS RAISING UP A BIT AND HITTING A HOOD BRACE DUE
TO THE TORQUE.

SO, TRIM THE BRACE A LITTLE BIT AND THERE SHOULD BE ENOUGH CLEARANCE IN
YOUR
'56 USING A SMALL BLOCK. I DON'T KNOW IF THE BIG BLOCK SITS HIGHER OR NOT,
BUT I'M SURE SOMEONE OUT THERE WILL BE ABLE TO TELL US.

AMOS.

Rear Disk Brakes

Although I have not tried this, I have been told by someone that the
rear disk brake setup from a 1986 Cadillac Seville or Eldorado is a
very easy swap in to the stock rear-end housing.

I actually looked at this on his 57 2 door wagon, but don't recall
if he had to fabricate a bracket for the swap. I do remember him
telling me to get the entire setup from the donor because it is all
necessary. Maybe someone on the list has done this personally and
can elaborate.

Could this happen? A man that is a U.S. citizen gets on a plane at the
Baltimore airport. He is going to England. He does not have a passport.
However no one asks to see his passport before he gets on the plane to
England. He lands at Heathrow airport in England. He gets off the plane
and walks right past immigration and customs. They both say hello and
welcome to England but don't ask for his passport. He is picked up at the
airport by someone he does not know and is given a free ride to his hotel.
No one asked to see his passport in England when he arrived or when he
left a few days later. When he gets back in the U.S. everyone on the
plane is asked for their passport except him.

What is his first name?
