Bob,

I told my brother Steve, in Fullerton, CA. about your list, and about the
generous members on it. He mentioned to me that one of the father's on his

son's special needs baseball team restores cars for a living. He said that

if anyone in Southern California needs a professional restorer, this is the

guy to go to.

His name is Greg Powell, and his shop phone number is (714) 871-2011. He is

located in Fullerton, and has over 30 years experience on restoring classic

cars.

I just thought I'd like to pass this on to all of our members in case they
were looking for a reliable and honest resto. guy and auto detailer.

Thanks for all of your work in putting this list together.

That was a nice touch in your last cars for sale e-mail warning people to
stop reading if they did not
like to see high priced cars. The probable outcome was to make every
person on the list read it completely
to see just how high the price of cars can go. You can not win no matter
what you do. Someone will probably complain that they missed the warning.

Bob,

Regarding your question about taxing used car purchases. I agree with you
that it is unfair to tax the sale of a used good transaction made between
two individuals. I believe many of our taxes are more about what the
politicians were able to put through and they didn't think would get them
voted out for doing. Fun tax fact for California, the state takes 20% of
the property taxes from every city and county to balance the state budget.
The state does a maneuver to put this money into schools, but they subtract
an equal amount out of state aid to schools. Local governments now derive
the majority of there funds from sales tax. Although this is off topic, my
point is that the state will take our money any way they can. If you'd
like
to see a presentation about California local government revenue, and you
have RealPlayer, you may go to

I'm wondering if other owners of a '56 Chevy (car) that has
been restored have had problems with reproduction taillights? I've just
talked to a body repairman and he's asking if I am going to use my original
taillights or replace them with a reproduction set. He said that the
reproductions do not fit correctly and that the body has to be modified to
fill the gap at the bottom of the taillights. Are there different
manufactures that produce taillights that fit?
Thanks Bob, great job!

With respect to your comment about many US States collecting sales tax on
successive sales of the same vehicle: yes, they certainly do - and no one
ever
promised that life was going to be fair!

The tax codes in Michigan (as well as those in New York where I lived
previously) provide for the collection of State sales taxes on any number
of
items which commonly go through a series of owners. The motor vehicle
however,
because of the various state licensing and titling requirements, is one
whose
ownership is easily tracked. Thus, the sales tax - or at least a
significant
portion of that which is due by statute - is typically collected on vehicle
transfers.

There are (at least in Michigan) some loopholes, such as transfers between
relatives, which have reportedly been used rather creatively at times.

I've got some nice used side stainless moldings for a 57 Chevy 210/BelAir
4dr
sedan or wagon for sale. No front fender spears though. I could also
polish
these pieces to show quality. Prices range from $10 up to $50 depending on

the piece and the condition desired. I may even be able to get the
aluminum

To Jim and Carol Wheeler in response to the question about alternatives to
the 134A replacement hassle.

First about R-406A, STAY AWAY FROM IT!!!!!! The gas reacts bad with the
oil
in the R-12 systems and caused the cap tubes or whatever type of gas
control
unit you have to plug up. They can also plug up the dryers and eventually
the compressor will either just quit or fry.

I have found that using R-401A, aka MP-39. This can be used as a direct
replacement for the R-12. It actually runs in the R-12 compressors with no

problems that I have seen. I have put this in large commercial coolers and

refrigerator units and in about a dozen cars and have had no problems.
I think it is always a good idea to have the AC unit checked out and make
sure it is still sealed well, no leaks. Replacing the dryer is also a good

idea, but not as frequently needed an item as most of the AC shops would
have
you think. If the system is still tight and not open to the air, hopefully

it has some gas left in it, your dryer is probably OK.

A few +'s of MP-39:
Cheap...30 pound bottle $60 to $90
Compressor runs cooler lasts longer
Use only 85% the amount of gas compared to R-12
Higher efficiency than R-12
The compressor runs at a much lower head pressure, low side only needs to
be
about 8 to 10 psi. This makes the compressor draw less power and run
cooler.
You don't have to change the valves to use MP-39

We tried the R-406A in about a dozen Cold Food Vending machines at a
Vending
company I worked at. Everyone of them plugged up using the R 406A. Even
the
factory rep told us that he had made a mistake when he recommended it. It
does have its good applications , but not as a replacement for R-12. Use
the
R-401A or its other name MP-39, it is the only real direct replacement I
have found that will work.

Thanks

Bob, you are certainly not alone in believing the multiple sales tax events

inflicted on automobiles by CA and other states is wrong. You can escape
it
by leasing but that usually makes sense only if you must have a new vehicle

every two years or so. A friend told me Utah used to (not sure about now)
tax the difference between your trade-in and the price of your new vehicle.

That sounds a lot more fair.

Editor's note. This double taxation probably will not end soon. No
Senator or Representative wants less money to spend. I am told it cost 1
million to get anything on the ballot in Calif.

Hi BOB,,,,

A reply to your question about sales tax on used cars.. Here in Michigan
we have to pay tax on the resale price,, and in Fla. {and some other
states},, the tax is figured after the trade-in amount is taken off the
purchase price..

This is some what of a break. in the amount that the state receives..
Another item that bothers me,, is the way the states figure the plate
fee"s.... They use the new price of the car,, and that figure is dropped
in a small amount for the first 2 years, then the 3d year figure stays with
the car for life... I don"t think that is fair,, as a 12 year old car
that might be sold for 300.00 to 500.00, would still be very high plate
fee..

But ,, all the complaining won"t change anything,, just another
complainer.. JEFF

Editor's note. Jeff, you are correct. That is another rip off.

Bob, could you post this please? Thanks!

I need some help everyone. I have a 1956 235 "Blueflame 140" I am
rebuilding. When it was running before I started this restoration it had an
oiling problem. When started the valve train would not get oil for 2-3
minutes. It was noisy to say the least. The oil light went right out, and
there was no bottom end knocking, so I know I had oil pressure.

When I tore it apart I found that one of the fittings in the oil tube
located under the lifter cover had been modified. This tube provides the
oil
to the "connector" between the rocker shafts that oils them. The fitting
where the oil enters the tube has been brazed shut, and then a very small
hole has been drilled in it. Is this a factory job?

This is getting very long. I have created a web page with 3 photos and more
details about this for everyone to see. Please visit this page and see if
you can help. There is a link on it to Email me if someone knows an answer
to this problem.

Re: your question on sales taxes for used cars. I just purchased a '56
BelAir 4 door sedan, 6 cylinder and glide. No other options. I paid the

$400.00, made some repairs and took it to our blessed Delaware motor

that my tax would be computed on that, no matter what my bill of sale
stated.
After much fussing, they allowed me to take it to a dealer for appraisal
who
came up with a much more friendly price. Go figure.

I
call it TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!!!!!!!!! It is a TOTAL PUBLIC

supposed
to collect sales tax on it & turn it in to the STATE?????? I definitely
feel
SOMETHING should be done about this situation! It IS TOTALLY UNFAIR to
have
to pay sales tax on ANY item that a tax has already been collected

Bob, I'm with you on this used car tax, and have been for years!
When I was just a wee hot rodder in NY state, many of my used cars were
purchased from like-minded folks, who sold me their old Chevies for $1.
They knew I
would get slammed paying for tags, so they gave me a break on paying taxes
on the
initial purchase.
Maybe they need the tax money to pay for all the paper work they do.
Isn't this the same situation with our houses?
