My question to all of you is about the stereos that Danchuk sells. I have
a 57 and I want to put some good sounds in my car. The Danchuk catalog
shows a few radios that will fit into the dash and look pretty good. My
question is does anybody out there have one of these and how do they sound?
I was thinking of the AM/FM/Cass that will also allow for the attachment of
a CD player, (Custom Autosound USA-5). The price is $290 and I know I can
get a good aftermarket one for less that would probably be better. But
then I would have to mount it in the glove box. The car had one in the
glovebox when I bought it, I would rather have a glovebox with just one
radio in the dash.
Another question is about the stereo speaker made to replace the one in the
dash. It has two speakers but mounts in place of the factory speaker. I
know this puts the seperation close together but I think that one of these
and a pair of the kick panel speakers would give me pretty good sound
without cutting holes in my car.
How about it? Anybody have experience with this? If so, please help us
all out and answer here in Bob's newsletter.

I also wanted to let you all know that the weekend went well, driving
Jeanette's Mom around in the convertible made her day. I'm glad I was able
to help her out.

About a month ago someone asked - which dealers are providing American
Autowire Kits at the best price.
If there was an answer I missed it. American Autowires web site
provides a list price of $449.00 for the 55-57 kit. I recently pick-up
their flyer at a swapmeet it had a $449.00 sticker covering a printed
$399.00 price. Does anyone know a dealer that has the best pricing on
this kit? Please post it or email me.
Thanks for you help.

I want to thank everyone who responded to my oiling system question on my
1956 235 ci 6 cyl. Anyone else who has comments about it can see my
description of the problem at http://www.55-57chevys.com/help/

I had decided to completely remove the "restriction" in the oil tube
leading
to the rocker shaft. However, just tonight I discovered two different
references in GM manuals to the oil coming from the rear main, then being
"metered" to the valve train through a tube assembly. This makes me wonder
how they "metered" the oil. I will still plan on removing the "restricted"
fitting when I put it together again. I can always remove the side cover
and
install it again I guess.

Here's a NEW question for the panel of experts who read these postings:
Does anyone know the correct GM part number for the camshaft in a 1956 235,
140 hp, standard transmission engine? Here is what I can tell you about the
cam I removed. I believe it is the original cam. Towards the back of it
there is still a visible splotch of paint that looks like it was once
brown.
Under that splotch of paint is the number 3836386, and below it are two
little bumps, like a casting identification. I may be wrong about the third
"3" in the number, but am pretty certain it is a "3". I checked all lobes
and I got .268" cam lift. (1.722"-1.454"= .268") They were all within
.001"
of each other From a rough measurement of the rocker arms, I figured they
are a 1.33 ratio, which gives this cam a .357" valve lift. Can anyone shed
some light on this?

Thanks all!

<< This is a subject about cars and taxes that seems unfair to me. In
California and I think most states that have a sales tax, you pay sales
tax
every time you buy a car new or used. I can see it as fair when you buy a
new car. However if you sell the car for example a year after you bought
it, the next buyer also pays sales tax on the same car. So the state can
be collecting tax on the same car many times. I don't think that is fair.

Anyone have an opinion on this? Am I wrong in my thinking? If the state
gave the sales tax collected on the second sale to the first person that
bought the car, it would seem to me to be a lot fairer. >>

Bob, agree with you, I often thought of the same thing.

To Kieth and others,

My old "Stovebolt Six" developed a similar problem when the little oil
tube
simply broke off at the top of the bend. This tube is a critical part in
the
oil distribution throughout the entire engine.

If you will look at a cross sectional diagram of the entire engine (Figure
3,
page Engine Assembly 6-4 in the 1955 Shop Manual), this little tube is the
only way oil is distributed to the upper portion of the head and from the
valley beneath the rocker arm assembly. The oil is then directed down
through hollow passages to the lifters which is what you was making noise.

It is hard to imagine that the working surfaces of your lifters and
pushrods
were not severely worn if this engine was operated like this for very long.

When I removed the rocker arm cover the broken portion of the tube was
lying
there in one of the valleys next to where the gasket fits against the top
of
the heard. I had to remove this part by disassembling the rocker arm
assembly and took it to my welder friend and had it TIG welded back
together.
This is a rather ticklish business right on that bend -- you cannot use
too
much heat or welding metal or you will weld it shut.

The length and diameter of the tube is designed to be completely open to
assure adequate oil flow to the internal engine parts. If yours is braised

together it was a shadetree job and should be either discarded or replaced.

There may be an appropriate gauge of mild steel brake line which could be
used to refabricate something similar to what was installed from the
factory.
Simply cut the end off with a die grinder and replace it witch the
appropriate gauge line. Make sure the length is about the same as it was
before it was altered.

Hope this helps.

RE: '57 210 Delray. 5-6-7's all had the option of the "Delray" on the 210
series models. What makes the 210 a "Delray" is the interior that the
factory installed in the car. The interior for Delrays is an all vinyl
interior as opposed to a combination cloth and vinyl. All years had a
"waffle" patterned stitching in the vinyl upholstery. The most 210's with
"Delray" interiors were produced in '55, fewer in '56, and even fewer in
'57.
I have a '57 and '56 210 Delray and am still looking for an original '55

Editor's note. Here are some hints on how to get laws changed. This only
works in states with a small population.
Find out which senator and representative heads the committee that deals
with taxes and/or automobiles. Ask your local representative. They can
tell you. Explain to your local representative what you want and ask them
what are the chances you can make it happen. Then personally visit the
senator and representative in charge of taxes and ask then what need to be
done to get the law changed. They will usually tell you. Once you find
out, see if you or your state car clubs have the time and money to make it
happen.
You may get asked for a campaign donation.

GOOD LUCK

Hi Bob and everyone, just a note to Richard ,that Bryces Classic Parts
still must be in business for I just bought my side motor mounts from him.
It could be possible that he is using only E Bay to sell, for that is where
I purchased them. There was a note to check out his other auctions on E
Bay. Bob, that sales tax issue sure brought a lot of response from the
members. Iowa has a 5% sales tax on their cars. One way to beat the system
if you buy private and not from a dealer, you can put your purchase price
on the title for what ever amount. They never check to see what you paid
for it. I know that is wrong, but every one does it. They might question it
if you had a $9000 car and turned in that you only paid a $1 for it, but
would not question $1800 for a purchase price. In Iowa, we do not have to
have it inspected to get a title. I want to thank every one that responded
to my 605 ps question. It really helped and got me on the right track. Keep
up the good work Bob, because someday I hope to meet you in person. Roger

Bob,
In answer to the question of where to get the MP-39/R-401A. We get it
through a local refrigeration supplier. You need a AHAM-NARDA
refrigeration
certificate to buy any freon type stuff, or know somebody who is certified
to
get it for you. Anyone who does refrigeration work has one. I will check
for specific national outfits that handle it and let everyone know.

Hi Bob,
I agree with all the tax comments on the list. If a car is sold enough
times it will eventually bring in more revenue than what it cost for the
car to begin with. This is especially true of collector cars. A '55 BelAir
Sport Coupe 2 dr. hdtp. had a base price of a little over $2000. If you buy
one now for $40,000 the tax, (at 5%), would be $2000! A real "cash cow"!
Here's another example of unfair taxes. If you buy a set of tires you
will pay federal excise tax on the tires. Years ago this was 10 cents per
pound of tire weight. I don't know how many other states do this but
Maryland charges sales tax on the excise tax! You're being taxed on taxes!
Anybody think that's fair? Maryland has also started collecting sales tax
on your daily newspaper, making the delivery person a tax collector for the
state!
I could go on and on about the taxes in Md. and the US all day. Many of
them are unfair, some are actually unconstitutional, (tax on tax), yet the
people are really powerless to do anything once the tax law is enacted. How
many "temporary" taxes have you seen rescinded? Thanks for the soap box,
Bob! Wild Bill

Editor's note. This reminds me of the old joke about another state just
north of you that also starts with an M. Perhaps some list members live
their. Their state income tax for had 3 questions.

1. How much did you make last year?
2. How much did you spend last year?
3. Send in the rest.

they returned the excess VLF, spending millions to return thousands, I just

received a check for $2.00, duh, whats wrong with this picture! California
is
also trying to pass legislation to force all owners of classic(hobby)
vehicles to use historic plates, give up Black&Yellow plates, pay a 2% VLF
&
restrict miles driven on vehicles. For more info go to smogrfg.com,stay

My wife is going to buy an new car and we need to get it as cheap as
possible. I have heard of
dealer hold back which I am told is added profit for the dealer. Also, is
it cheaper to buy a 2001
after the 2002 cars models are out.

Lyle wilson

Editors' note. I am not in the car business and this is just info I
remember from many years ago.
Hopefully some list member can confirm this info or tell me where it is
wrong. As I remember it,
a dealer pays for a car when they order them. Most car makers give their
dealers 2 to 3 percent
rebate called a "hold back" on the cost of the car to help the dealer sell
the car and make a profit.

On the date a new year model car is first sold, the dealer gets some money
from the car makers
to help them clear out the old year models. I don't know the amount of
the rebate but I think it
varies with the make. Can any list member give us more and/or better
information.

If you plan to keep your car a long time, you might save some money by
buying a one year old
new car when the next years model are introduced. I did this once and I
think I got a good deal
on the car. However, you never know if you get a good deal on a car
purchase as you don't
know about many factory rebates.

You may have seen ads of new cars for sale at "invoice". There is no way a
dealer could make a
profit if the dealer sold a new car for what it cost them and there is no
way a car dealer can stay in
business without making a profit. So the "hold back" would have to be
their profit on these
deals. I know a lady who buys a new car every 3 years. She tells me that
she always buys at
dealers invoice. The way she does it is to fully pay for a new car when
she orders it from the
dealer. She tells the dealer that for 15 minutes work filling out the
order for the car, the dealer
will make 3 percent "the hold back" profit. She says some dealer will not
do this for her but
others will.

Is it a big job to put a new starter in my 57 model 150?

Jim

Editor's note. Sort of. A lot depends on whether you have a 6 or 8. It
is hard to get the starter
out and put the new one in on a V8. There is not a lot of space to work
down there. Bruce
Leeds has an excellent description of how to replace a starter in the LA
Classic Chevy Newsletter
this month. I will scan it in and send it to you.

BOB
-------------------------------------
From: Editor

In the last month, I went with 2 friends as they tried to buy a new car.
These wanted to buy up
scale cars. One wanted a Lexus and one wanted a Q45. My friends left the
dealerships not
buying a cars. The both had the same reaction. The salespersons were
jerks. They told me they
would not buy the car from the dealer if they sold them the car for $1.
Their assessment of the
sales person was correct. They were indeed jerks. You would think they
were getting a bonus for
turning people away form the dealer. I wonder if somebody should tell the
dealer about this?

For most people, including me, nothing kills a sale faster than a sales
person trying to apply
pressure to "buy today". At the first sign of any pressure when I am
buying anything, I just get
up and leave and never go back. You would think that Lexus and Infiniti
dealers would know
that. They don't. If you can afford that price range cars, you probably
are a business person that
has some smarts and some experience in doing deals. If I did not know
the brand of cars being
sold, I would have guessed we had walked into a Yugo dealer.

On the return trip form these dealers, both people ask me what they should
do. They wanted the
car and they had the money to buy them. I took them to my credit union's
car buying service.
It was like the difference between night and day. It took about ten
minutes at the car buying
service. They said, tell me the car you want, what color you want, and
what options you want.
We will get back to you in 2 days with 3 cars that match your requirements.
If you want to trade
in your car, the credit union buying service will have 2 bids for it along
with the 3 cars they found
for you to buy. It was that simple and the car buying service did not cost
the buyer anything
directly. The cost for their service was built into the price of the car.

Sure enough, in 2 days the credit union buying service had 3 cars for sale
with a firm price.
There was no pressure. If you wanted the cars fine and if you did not want
them fine. The credit
union buying service had the cars 3 cars at their office. You could look
at them and drive them if
you wanted to. Best of all, they were about $350 over dealer invoice.
This was much cheaper
that the dealers price.

I think the lesson from this is that if you don't have any experience
dealing with jerks, which is
most of us, hire someone to do it for you.

It is a sad commentary about the car business when someone will pay another
person to deal with
car dealers on their behalf. I can't think of another product like that.

I invite people to share their good or bad experience buying a new car.
If you have some do
s or
don't please let us know.

My son Larry just leased a BMW and he had a very nice experience. There
was no pressure. He got the car he wanted and had no problems. He has
recommended the dealer to several other people. Perhaps BMW dealers are
different.

Here is an interesting question for you. You have a TriFive. We all know
that it is illegal to roll
back a cars speedometer. Suppose I backed my TriFive in reverse 10 miles

If it was, did I
violate the law? Also, did I damage the speedometer and/or odometer?
