Hi Bob,
Really enjoying your site - keep up the good work. We didn't save the

Lockport NY who has limos and might be interested. He has a stretched PT

BOB,
I JUST RECENTLY PURCHASED A 1957 CHEVY 210 2 DOOR SEDAN, THE
CAR IS UNTOUCHED AND PAINT IS DUSK PEARL AND IMPERIAL IVORY, AND
I WAS WONDERING HOW MANY OF THESE SEDANS AND OF THIS COLOR
DID THEY MAKE? ALSO IT HAS ADD ON AIR AND ON THE TOP OF THE UNIT
INSIDE THE CAR IT HAS THE WORD VEEP AIR, JUST CURIOUS ABOUT WHAT
BRAND AIR THEY ADDED ON FROM THE FACTORY. THE CAR I HAVE HAS A
235 6 CYLINDER AND 3 SPEED ON THE COLUMN, I THOUGHT ABOUT PUTTING
A 283 AND POWERGLIDE TRANS IN IT AT A LATER DATE, BUT DONT KNOW IF
I WANT TO CHANGE IT FROM THE UNTOUCHED CONDITION. I ALSO HAD
PURCHASED A 67 MODEL POWERGLIDE AND I WAS TOLD IT WOULD NOT
BOLT UP TO THE 235 6 CYLINDER WITHOUT AN ADAPTER, COULD YOU GIVE ME A
LITTLE INFORMATION ON WHAT KIND OF ADAPTER AND WHERE I MIGHT
LOCATE ONE. I MAY JUST WAIT AND PUT THE 283 AND TRANS IN AT THE SAME
TIME.
THANKS ALOT FOR THE WONDERFUL
WORK YOU DO, AND TO ALL THE MEMBERS
FOR ALL THE MUCH NEEDED INFORMATION

Hi Keith,

Here are some concrete facts about the '56 235...

Rocker Ratio = 1.477:1

Valve Lift = .3118 (exh)
.2941 (int)

The casting number is 3836386. The part number would have been 3836483 to
order a new one.
It was used from 1956 - 1958 engines.

This was the high lift camshaft designated for use with the Powerglide
transmission.

Hope that helps out....

A few months ago someone mentioned a spray paint that looked very much
like cad plating. I keep all my BobFord lists but I found it would take
forever to reread them all. I need a new organizing system. Anyway I
was hoping someone would remember what the brand was and where it was
sold. I seem to remember something about Walmart or Kmart.

Thanks for any help, and please send it to Bob's list for everyone.

Bob

I read with interest your comments on buying a new car through a dealer.
I agree with you about the dealer high pressure tactics such as switching
salesmen on you. I won't put up with it.

I purchased a new Audi last year (the first new car in 25 years) and it was

a pleasant experience. It was done entirely over the Internet and I had no
contact with
the dealer at all. The best part for me was delivery to my front door by
car hauler and I never had contact with the dealership which was in another

state. I arranged financing through the local credit union after contacting
them
through e-mail and they had no problem with the arrangement. They cut a
cashier's
check to the dealer and I delivered the title to them when the car was
delivered. The price I was quoted was about $1000 less than a typical
dealer which a good
negotiator might be able to beat but this was a good no hassle deal.

I dealt through Carorder.com which is not in business now but
http://www.carsdirect.com
is still going strong. I started initially with them but they did not have

home delivery available in all states. I don't know their current
situation but even
without that option it is still a good deal. For me though, it was the
main reason I
went with CarOrder.com. At the very least, it is an excellent way to
research car
pricing. They give you the capability of comparing different makes and/or
models side by
side, feature by feature and price. Not all car buying service do this.

I encourage others to do the same. Maybe we can educate the dealers and
salesmen that they need to treat their customers better.

Editor's note. Here is something I learned from years of experience in
real estate finance. Nobody can put pressure on you unless you let them.
I usually tell people up front in negotiations that if you want my money
for something they are selling, they have to be 100 percent honest with me
in everything they say and if they try to apply any pressure, that is the
end of our negotiations. At the first hint of pressure or not telling me
the whole truth I just leave and never go back. One of the principals of
negotiations is never negotiate with someone who can not make a final
decision. So if you are buying a car, ask the sales person if they can
make a final decision on everything about the car. If they have to get a
managers approval on anything, only negotiate with the manager.

Bob

Please don't edit this out of the list. I know the list members will be
interested.

Fellow list members, if you think Bob knows a lot about cars, you should
hear what he knows
about finance. At my request, Bob gave a seminar for the employees here at
Page International.
He just blew me and the rest of the class away with his knowledge of
finance. Wow, was I and the
other employees impressed . We had several people before come to our after
work hours classes
and tell us about our financial options to plan for our retirement. The
big problem was they all
had something to sell. We all knew the information they were giving us was
biased. However
Bob had nothing to sell and he gave us unbiased straight information. The
difference was like
between night and day. Thanks Bob. What a pleasure to have someone give
us facts and not a
sales pitch.

Bob, you made me the hero here at Page International for inviting you to
talk to us. On behalf of
everyone here that attended your class, a big Thank You. The time you
spent telling us whether it
was a good thing to make extra payments on our house was great. My husband
is a CPA and
when I told him the information you gave us, he told me that for all the
financial training he has
had, no one ever fully explained that to him.

Fellow list members, if you live in Southern California, you should invite
Bob to come to your
company or meetings and talk to you about retirement and financial
planning. I guarantee you
will be glad you had him come and that you will go home a lot smarter than
when you arrived.

Bob told us he donates a lot of his time to teach employees of various
companies how to plan for
their retirement. And he does it for FREE. It is just his way of giving
back to the community. Where
do you find the time to do all of this volunteer work Bob and still put out
the great Chevy list.

Since most of us belong to at least some group at work like a union or
association, I suggest you
all do as I have done and ask the group to invite Bob to speak to the them.
I know the group will
really appreciate what you have done for them.

I hope I don't flood you with requests Bob.

This is for Chuck Elliot who asked about radios sold by Danchuk and the
stereo speaker made to replace the one in the dash with two-speakers. I
have one in my 55 Delray and the sound quality of the radio is okay, but
definitely nothing to write home about. For the money, it's not bad, but
if you really want quality sound, this is not the answer. As for the
speakers, don't waste your money. The speakers are poor at best. You will
not be happy with them.

Hello all Tri-5ers:
In the last 'Bob Ford LIST', Bob was kind enough to send out information
about our car show (Hawkeye Area Classic Chevy Club in Iowa). Its time
we PAY HIM BACK! We are going to send him a tee shirt from our car show!
If all of us do that he will have shirts from every state in the union.
He never asks for payment of any kind - he even sends out reprints and
videos to LIST member for free. How about it? It would be a neat
collection for him. He deserves it!

I own a 56 Chevy Belair 4-door, no post, hardtop, 283 V8 4bbl carb, dual
exhaust, 2 speed powerglide, all original. I am the second owner of the
vehicle, which I purchased in 1977 with 65,000 original miles on it. It now
has 99,300+. The engine and transmission were gone through a few years ago
and it still runs great. Recent new paint and upholstery. Still needs some
chrome pieces here and there. I am looking for a stainless steel piece that
goes between the two door windows on the passenger side of the car.
Remember, this has no post.
I appreciate any information you might have in helping me locate this
particular part, because the one in the car now is damaged.

Sincerely, Greg Pope.

Here is an interesting question for you. You have a TriFive. We all know
that it is illegal to roll back a cars speedometer. Suppose I backed my
TriFive in reverse 10 miles
down the road to my home. When I got home, was my odometer 10 miles less
than when I started?
If it was, did I violate the law? Also, did I damage the speedometer
and/or odometer?
BOB
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Your odometer would be the same as when you left because you had to drive
10 miles to get there. That's if your speedo will turn back the miles by
going in reverse. As for breaking laws, I don't think the law allows you
to drive in reverse on city streets. I don't think you would do any damage
to the speedometer or odometer by going backwards.

This is a response to Roger Dorrr's suggestion about the taxes on a used
car. Here in Md. each clerk at the MVA has a book with current vehicle
prices. IF you actually pay a lot less than what the book says the car is
worth you have to be able to prove what you paid, ie: canceled check, money
order stub, notarized statement, etc. If you can't prove what you actually
paid you're taxed on the book value even if you did pay a lot less for the
vehicle. By the same token, there's no tax and no inspection if you give
the car to a daughter or son. Wild Bill

Chuck,
Regarding your sound system, I have not seen one good system which fits in
the dash, the ones offered have a terrible sound and poor reception. But I
am comparing them to a good middle of the road system. My dash is cut and
accepts the newer tuners but if it wasn't I'd give up the glovebox. You
can get a great tuner for a little over $200 and then get a good 4 channel
bridgeable amp, another $200, mounted in the trunk. Get some Alpine
speakers, I have a 6" and a little tweeter in each door. Two 6x9's sit
aside one 8" base speaker in the rear deck. I made speaker boxes for the
8" in the rear and one for a little 3" Alpine that fits where the original
speaker was in the dash. My system sounds better than my homes'. I got
the amp at a garage sale to keep within my budget. This is money well
spent. I can't emphasize enough how great it is to have a really nice
system in your car. Do some research, take the time, and you will get so
much more enjoyment out of your car! Your car may be from the 50's but !
utilize todays superior technology for full rich music.

Bob, I don't recall ANY odometer working when a car is driven in
REVERSE!!!!

Richard

Editor's note. Try your TriFive and most any modern car that does not have
an electronic speedometer and back it a short distance. Watch the 1/10
mile position on the odometer. You will note it is turning backward.
However once the 1/10 mile position reaches 0, it doesn't go backward any
more.

If there was an answer I missed it. American Autowires web site
provides a list price of $449.00 for the 55-57 kit. I recently pick-up
their flyer at a swapmeet it had a $449.00 sticker covering a printed
$399.00 price. Does anyone know a dealer that has the best pricing on
this kit? Please post it or email me.
Thanks for you help.
