    For Chuck Elliot who asked about the Tri5 radios;
I'd just like to add that most of the car radios I've seen with adjustable
shafts have shafts that will close up enough to allow the whole unit to be
mounted through the square hole that was used for the dial on the original
radio. You can then make up a cover plate to cover the gap around the dial
and also cover the original shaft holes. I made one with a "bow tie" shape
out of 1/8" aluminum. The only problem is that quality adjustable shaft
radios are getting harder to find all the time. You also need to pick a
radio with small knobs as they may cover part of the face when they're
closed up as far as they can go. I picked up a used Blaupunkt at a flea
market for $20 and I'm quite satisfied with the sound and fit. I had one of
the dual speaker set ups that replace a 6x9 in my El Camino a few years ago
and I didn't think it was so hot.

    Hi Bob and list members,

Catching up on the lists, I see a lot mentioned about sales and
resale tax on cars. That is bad enough, but several states (like Maryland
    for one) charge you sales
tax on your car when you relocate from another state. I purchased a new
    Buick while
living in Iowa, and paid the appropriate sales tax. I moved to Maryland
    two years later and
paid sales tax on the same vehicle when registering it in Maryland.
When my parents retired and wanted to move back east, they moved to
Virginia rather than returning to Maryland. It would have cost a small
    fortune in sales
tax to register two cars and a motor home and a boat. Talk about double
    jeopardy!

Bob, What do you have to say about buying tri-fives as a retirement
investment? For instance, would it be wise to purchase a fairly complete
55 hard top in need of restoration for around $3000 and let it sit for
30-40 years or stick the same $3000 in an IRA? Storage of the car would not
    cost anything.

Editor's note. From a pure investment point of view, old cars are not the
best investment you can make. Old car prices go in cycles. The cars that
are in demand now and have the highest prices are cars that people have
some connection with when they were younger. In 30 to 40 years from now,
the people that have some connection to TriFives will be gone and so will
    the demand for the cars.

The best return you can get on a $3000 investment is investing in an
education for yourself. I recommend you use that $3000 on a financial
education. Become an expert in some form of investing. There are many
forms of investing instead of just stocks which is what most people think
of when they think of investments.. For me real estate investing is the
best way to go. For others, it could be bonds, options, commodities, oil
wells, rare gems, gold, silver, rail cars, etc. Pick the one you like and
learn all there is to know about it.

An expression I often tell my retirement planning students is that "A
degree and an education are not the same thing". I can tell you about
several people that became wealthy by finding one area of investing and
learning all they could about it. However, I do not know of any way to get
rich quick. As many others have said, "Only invest in what you know well".

I can tell you from personal experience that no matter what your background
or education, you can become financially independent if you are willing to
study and then start investing wisely. When I got out of college in 1962,
my net worth was a lot less than zero and it stayed that way for several
years as I slowly paid off my college loans. However that all changed
when I started to study investing. I knew nothing about investing before
that. As far as I can remember, investing was not taught in any school or
college I went to. I had to learn it on my own.
As I gained more experience, I got a lot better at investing. Anyone can
become a successful investor. I have helped many people do it from many
backgrounds. A degree is not required or any financial background.

It really comes a shock for people that knew me "back when" to learn that I
became the President and CEO of a large secondary mortgage banking company.
There reaction is usually the same whether they say it or think it. "How
could a hillbilly like you ever become a success in the mortgage banking
    business?"

Hi Bob and of course thanks for the great list as always. I'm looking for
    an
Internet friend that I meet on this list. His name is James and went by the

screen name CHEVY156. The last time I had talked with him he was petty
    sick.
I called him and we talked and he was slowly recovering. What I would like
    to
know from anyone on this list is has anyone heard if he is ok? I really
    would
like to know and hope he has not taken a turn for the worse. He used to be
    on
the list and help people on here all the time. Thanks in advance to any
person on the list that can please let me know if he is ok..........

Bob, regarding running the odometer backwards if you disconnect the cable
from the tranny & hook an electric drill to it ( like any bit) you can
    drive
the numbers backwards, we did it years ago on a guys rental car! Or you can

take the speedo head to a speedometer shop & they will reset the numbers .

Painless wiring? When I rewired my '56 sedan I went to the local auto
parts store and bough a new Borg Warner fuse block. It is for the new blade
type fuses and has 10 circuits, it cost $19.95. I went to the local
Tractor Supply Company store and bought all the wire I would need for $20.
For some reason wire was cheaper at TCS than the auto parts store. I also
bought about $15 worth of wire connectors. I rewired everything, the only
wires I reused were the wires for the tail lights and gas tank sending
unit. This included wiring in a late model steering column and electronic
ignition, tach, alternator, electric fan, electric fuel pump, line lock,
and nitrous oxide solenoids (no radio!). I call that "painless wiring."
$350 -$500 for an after market wiring harness, now that would hurt! The
money I saved will be used to fill the tank for $1.89/gal.
    Hugh

Editor's note. Hugh, if you are in California, consider gas at $1.89
    cheap.
Also, what is going to happen to people with electric cars when we have
    blackouts this summer.

    Hi Bob
I recently bought a power brake Tredel Vac for my 57 at a swap meet. I
tried to clean it up and put a rebuild kit in it.
but I don't think I did it right. So I was wondering if there is some one
who rebuilds these brake units that I could send it to
and have it done right. Also I would again like to take this opportunity
to ask the list members if any one has a original 57 chevy
bumper jack, and handle they would like to sell priced reasonable, please
    let me know.
    Thanks
Bob your doing a great job.

    Bob,
Talking of taxes, I've heard a theory that if all bank deposits and
withdrawals were taxed at 2% then that would raises enough tax to eliminate
    paying personal income tax.
I believe big corporations are against it though. I wonder why?

I believe Don Janda's idea of sending Bob a t-shirt is a great idea. One
will be one its way from Indiana or Ohio this summer.

On the issue of odometers moving in reverse. Here is a short story that I
experienced when I was a teenager. My Father was an accountant and
remembered the odometer when he got out of the car. One night I ask to
borrow it to go to the library. The next night, he asked me if it was 65
miles to the library and of course I had to confess that I drove it around.

Well, from that time on, I drove the 10 miles I was allowed and then
unscrewed the odometer. THE REST OF THE STORY: After getting out of
college, I found that my father would drive his 65 miles and then while he
and his friends were chewing the fat, he jacked up the back end of the car,

put it in reverse, and took it home as if only 10 miles had been on it. I
don't know the year of the vehicle, probable in the 30's. Interesting how
    things change.

I have a copy of "More American Graffiti". As I indicated in an earlier
post, I did not enjoy it nearly as much as the original; however, I would
    be
happy to send it to any of Bob's members. The 1st interested parted will
    be
sent the only copy I have as long as they promise to view it and make the
same offer so others will have the opportunity to see it.

    of things
with a odometer when I was a teenager.

Don Janda, thanks for a great idea. Bob, I put a tee shirt in the mail to
    you today from our club.
The video you sent me was great. The car part of the video was something
I have shared with the rest of the club.
There is no way you could have known it, but I loved the Pat Boone and
Beach Boys part of the video. I am their number one fan. I went to school
with Pat Boone's wife. She was known as Shirly Foley then. Here is a
trivia question for you Bob and anyone else that likes music trivia. Pat
Boone had a brother that also was a singer. What was his name?

    KJ

Editor's note. Kristy, you are really taxing my old brain. I have a
recording of Nick Todd singing "At the Hop" . Was he Pat Boone's brother?
Could it be that Todd is Dot spelled backwards (sort of). Wasn't Pat
    Boone's records on Dot?

    Hi Bob, and fellow tri-fivers,

In a recent list I saw Wyatt Smolick offering stainless for a 56 150/210 or
    57 150 wagon quarter window.

Over the years I have tried to locate these stainless pieces for my 57 150
    Handyman wagon.

The 55 and 56 quarter stainless is different from the 57 150 stainless.
Especially if the 55 or 6 is a sedan. The sedan quarters "Dip" at the
quarter windows, where a 57 150 Handyman quarter is straight and since a 55
    150 HAD/HAS no side stainless, it can't work on a 57 150.

    As for a 56 150 Handyman quarter stainless working on a 57 150 Handyman,
I've yet to locate any 56 150 Handyman stainless to compair to a 57
    Handyman.

Also, someone was asking about their recently purchased 57 sedan in Dusk
Peral, Imperial Ivory. I can't say about the 2-door sedans. but I own a
    one-owner 210 4-door sedan with 83,000 original miles AND BelAir 2-door
hartop BOTH painted in Dusk Pearl, Imperial Ivory. They are 139 cars apart
on the assembly line. I had a chance to buy an Arizona 57 210 2-door wagon
20 years ago for $1500 painted like this.

    Thanks. RJ
