You may get some flack from your advice to not use old cars as an
investment. You are really on
the mark though. If you buy an old car purely as an investment, unless you
get very lucky, you
have a poor investment. I have been an appraiser for 25 years and I have
done hundreds of cars.
Like you said car prices go in cycles. What is hot today probably will not
be hot 20 years from
now. Just look at the prices of old cars in the past to see what will
happen in the future. Very
few people will want a car they have never driven before. Usually when
they were young. We
associate these cars with the good times we had "back when".

For most of us, we don't buy a car just as an investment. We buy it to
enjoy it and hopefully
make a little money on it if we sell it.

Hi Bob and list members. Bob thanks for the great lists, we really do
appreciate you and all your efforts on the lists. We have moved from Yucca
Valley to Lake Perris (temporary until a church opens up for me to pastor
in
the basin area). My question/need is a mechanic that works on tri-5ers in
the area (Moreno Valley or Perris and the areas around the Lake Perris
area). I have a steering gear box seal that is leaking as fast as I put
the 90 weight oil into it and I am no mechanic, not only am I a minister
but
one with a bad back and neck and I can not work on my 57 Belair 4 dr.
sedan,
I would also like to know where I can get the powerglide worked on (new
gaskets/seals) it also leaks a lot. And lastly my tredle-vac power brakes
which I bought from Cliff up in Portland Or. are still giving me fits --
peddle will go to the floor and the brakes grab, I know how to "work" the
peddle so it will stop me with no problem, but it is a big pain and a
worry,
everything has been replaced except the brake lines themselves (cylinders
were turned too when I had the new tredle-vac put in. Any help in the
local
area will be greatly appreciated, remember I'm not a mechanic so advise
won't do me much good I need someone to help do the work - I'll be glad to
hand wrenches and pray while you work.......... Thanks Pastor Bill Ricklef
P.S. if you are in the Lake Perris area stop by with your car, we are going
to be camp ground hosts here for a while (till I get back into ministry).

I WAS WONDERING HOW TO GET A VIN TAG FOR THE DOOR JAMB ON
A 1957 CHEVY, THAT ONCE WAS A 150 SERIES CAR 6 CYLINDER 2 DOOR
SEDAN. THE CAR HAS BEEN CHANGED OVER IN EVER ASPECT TO A V8
CAR AND ALL THE BELAIR CHROME HAS BEEN PUT ON TO MAKE IT A TRUE
BELAIR. I NEED A TAG FOR DOOR JAMB THAT HAS VC57 AND WHAT EVER
OTHER NUMBER THAT SOMEONE ON THIS SITE MIGHT HAVE WITH A TITLE
TO MATCH THE VIN FOR THIS V8 2 DOOR SEDAN BELAIR. A FRIEND OF MINE
WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE HAD THESE 2 ITEMS FROM A CAR THAT
MIGHT HAVE BEEN WRECKED OR CRUSHED AND HAD A VIN AND TITLE.
I AM KIND OF IN THE DARK ON WHAT TO DO.
THANKS

Editor's note. Please check with your local DMV to see how to legally
replace the VIN tag.
In California, it can be a complicated procedure.

Bob and list members,
I am a bit behind reading the list as I just
returned from 2 weeks in Germany. I hope I'm not
"beating a dead horse" or two with this post. By the
way, driving in Germany is a recommended thrill...you
are cruising down the Autobahn at 100+ mph and the
BMWs and Mercedes are blowing by you like you're
standing still. And, no, there aren't that many
Porches in Germany...most end up in Southern
California!
Bob, the post you made on May 18th regarding
investing, old cars vs. other types, etc. was
wonderful. I can only echo your words. My interests
have always been music, real estate, and
wheeled-things-that-belch-smoke. I agree that one
should learn as much as one can about the fields they
are interested in and then invest in those fields. To
go a step further, I also believe you should do the
same when picking your life's work. If you pick a
field of great interest, you will give it 110% and the
money will come. Then take that money and invest it.
The only thing you left out was that no matter how you
are educated and prepared in your investments, there
is still an element of luck involved, i.e., being in
the "right place at the right time." Thanks for your
giving attitude of helping people and sharing
information.
I have not bought that many new vehicles in my
life, but this past year we got the hankerin' for a
new pick-em-up truck (that's what we drive in the
West). I got on the internet and started studying,
narrowing my choice down to two brands. Then I got
educated on the diferent models and what were standard
features on each. I, too, hate high pressure sales
people, partly because I spent most of my life in
sales, and was moderately successful without applying
pressure. By the way, I was amazed when I found out
that with my little bit of studying, I knew more about
the models I was interested in and what was included
with each, than the dealers' salespeople! So, GET
EDUCATED, and then be prepared to "WALK!" Salespeople
hate that....so if you are not getting what you want,
stand up and start toward the door. Nine out of ten
times you will be tackled before you get outside. I
did try some of those internet sites that brag about
low vehicle prices, but found that most like to dance
you around just like the dealers. One other
thing....use the tax laws to your advantage. Shopping
in Arizona where the sales tax on a vehicle is 8-9%, I
explained that I was a New Mexico resident and did not
want to pay tax twice, so I would pay it only in NM
(3%). I got 14 different stories on how the AZ tax
had to be paid, then found a few dealers who
understood how to make this work. I recommend dealers
in small towns, as they do business in quite different
ways than the big city hustlers. I found exactly what
I was looking for at a small dealer, who was willing
to deal, and understood my desire to save on the
taxes. So I paid 3 times what I spent on my first
house for the truck and drove merrily home.
Sorry to be so wordy, but if you thought so too
you've already skipped this! Tale care, all.
-Delivery Dale

Editor's note. Dale, I operate the same way you do when I buy something.
I learn as much about it as I can before I ever talk to a salesperson. It
pays. However this is something I never thought I would be doing in
saying a good word for car sales persons. When I was in college in the
50s, I spent one summer trying to make some money selling cars. I was
probably the worst salesman the dealer ever had. I learned everything
there was to know about the cars I wanted to sell. I new every detail
about the cars so if I was asked a question, I could give the correct
answer. If someone wanted to know the rear axle ratio, I could tell them.

The other salesmen told me that was a waste of time and they were right. I
learned that car salesmen were willing to pass on the rare buyer that knew
anything about cars. They told me that most buyers only wanted to know how
they could get a new car for a payment of X dollars a month. Nothing
else was of interest to them.

Hi, I'm new to the chevy list (but my husband has been reading it for a
long time). I just got a 57 chevy 4 door that needs to be restored.
Restoring the car will be easy, because my husband has been doing that
for years. What I need advice on is antique auto insurance. We will be
keeping this car for our own personal use, so it will need insurance.
I've looked on the web and found lots of companies. But I don't know if
they are as good as they sound? If anyone has any advice or opinions
about any insurance companies, it would be appreciated. Thanks

Does anyone know the differences in the various frames Chevy used in 55?

What differences are there between frames other than the Convertibles X
frame and the body mount placement for the HT, 2-Door, 4-Door,
Stationwagon, etc.?
Are these interchangeable between body styles?
The Factory Assembly Manual seems to describe two different frames but
they seem to be showing a standard two piece frame. Note these pages.
Section 2, Sheet 1.02 - Models all CKD Bloomfield
Sheets 2.00, 3.00, 4.00 Describes CKD Bloomfield and (Other)?

I have 5 t-shirts on their way to you....OH, IN, MI, WI and a generic one.

A few years ago, my club hosted one of CCI shows. I contacted one of the
Chevy Zone Managers and he donated a number of the 5-6-7 t-shirts, which I
considered to be outstanding. Since I still had one in the box, I am
including it. Now with the one you have from CA, you have 10% of the
states....enjoy.

Howdy Bob and all , For the most part I agree with your editorials Bob ,
but when you said that the tri/fives would become undesirable in the
eyes of the collector of the future , I don't agree with you . Even
though we that lived during that period will eventually die off , I
know of a lot of people "young and old" that surely never will let the
1950's die . "Point and case" what cars of today would you collect 30
or 40 years from now ?? A very few that come to mind are
prowlers,vipers,certain corvett's,buick reatta's,pontiac furio's but
other than that what would we pick from the 97 model year "40 years
after the 1957 chevy" that would be all that desirable ??
Thanks Bob for the GREAT list ,, Thanks Ernie ....PS Any of the list
members make it to Murdo SD. for the auction last Saturday may 19 th ?

<< Here is a
trivia question for you Bob and anyone else that likes music trivia. Pat
Boone had a brother that also was a singer. What was his name?

KJ

Editor's note. Kristy, you are really taxing my old brain. I have a
recording of Nick Todd singing "At the Hop" . Was he Pat Boone's brother?
Could it be that Todd is Dot spelled backwards (sort of). Wasn't Pat
Boone's records on Dot?

BOB >>

Hey, I guess I'll put my two cents in here, too! Actually, all you have
to
do is LISTEN to Nick Todd's record of "Plaything"! It has Pat's voice
written all over it !!!!!
Another great record Nick had was: "Does Your Heart Beat For Me"! If anyone

has that record, listen to the flip side of it> You would think it was Pat

himself! Richard

Editor's note. Richard, this just goes to show you how fate plays a role
in life. Nick Todd sounds almost
exactly like Pat Boone. Yet Pat Boone is rich and famous and no one knows
who Nick Todd is.

Hi Bob from Northern California, I have come across a fix-it for a
short coming on installing a rack n' pinion steering. I have talked to
Tracy and Kevin Jones ( tkjones@pei.sympatice.co ) about how they installed
their r&p unit. Kevin said it works great, but the steering radius was not
as tight, which made parking a bit more challenging.
I have received a couple issues of CCI magazines from Bob Fords' list
member, Major ( Retired ) Jerry Graver ( He is selling his issues to anyone
jjgraver@txct.net ) . In the February 1997 issue of CCI, they have a fix-it
for the turning radius. CCI part number 5387. This is a shorter steering
arm. Shorten by 1 5/8 inches, the shorter arms will give the r&p quicker
steering as well as an original 32 foot turning radius. The arms are brand
new, one piece forged steel made for CCI. They will not interfere with drum
brakes or with updated disks. Kevin I hope this helps. Classic Cars
should be driven. Bruce. bruce@stormnet.com

To RJ concerning 56 and 57 upper quarter paint dividers- 56 150s and 210s
used the same upper quarter diagonal molding as a 57 150, given the same
body
style, ie sedan or wagon. Nowhere did I mention 55, which has different
moldings. So this piece from a 56 210 wagon will fit and be correct on a
57
150 wagon. Check up on your part numbers.
